Despite a life-altering hunting accident in 1997 that caused him to lose his sight, Lonnie found the courage and determination to raise his three daughters as a single father in small-town Indiana, teaching them all to hunt and fish — and, against all odds, to drive. After the kids were grown and moved out, Lonnie was looking for another challenge. Through adaptive sports organizations Lonnie began to get the opportunity to do some amazing adventures. Fast forward a few years and Lonnie is a National Geographic 2015 Adventurer of the Year. He has kayaked some of the most challenging whitewater in the world and is responsible for first blind descents of Africa's fabled Zambezi River and West Virginia's world-renowned Gauley River. Lonnie is best known for his first descent of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. In May of 2023, Lonnie Bedwell became the first blind veteran to climb Mt Everest. He was accompanied by friends and climbing partners Michael Neal and Bryan Hill. Before the climb, Michael and Bryan rode their bicycles across India to set a world record for the fastest known time from sea level to Everest's summit. We'll have Michael on next week to share that story. Read more: https://wvdnr.gov/survival-skills-ten-things-to-do-when-lost-in-the-woods/ #2 – From WV PUBCAST – As summer winds down, tens of thousands of whitewater rafters and kayakers from all over the country begin their migration to West Virginia. They are here for the Gauley River — which normally only has navigable flows during the fall. The fall recreational flows are part of a planned effort of water releases in the fall to draw down Summersville Lake and support whitewater rafting and kayaking. The colors on the hills change from a bright green in the beginning of the season to vibrant yellows, reds and oranges in the late season. The landscape is interrupted by the bright primary-colored boats, tutus, sequined shirts and glittered faces, all headed downstream from where the river begins at Summersville Dam. “A lot of different colors, a lot of plastic on the water, a lot of smiling faces, a lot of glitter, a lot of lipstick,” says Matt McQueen, a park ranger with the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. “There's definitely a whole culture involved in the whitewater industry that is kind of unique, for sure.” The Gauley River usually gets 20,000 to 30,000 visitors each season. Rangers are predicting that the numbers this year could be their highest yet. Gauley season runs through Oct. 22, so there's still time yet to book your whitewater trip to experience the Beast of the East. As the leaves are beginning to turn, one national park representative estimates that this year will be the busiest so far. Dave Bieri, District Supervisor at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, said that many travelers already called to ask about the fall foliage. “We're also just starting into the Gauley Season, so that brings a lot of people out, especially on the weekends,” Bieri said. In addition to whitewater rafting on the Gauley River, there are numerous fall festivals and other activities taking place throughout the state. Singleton is the subject of a new film, “House in the Clouds: The Artistic Life of Robert Singleton,” that tells the story of what inspired him to return to his studio and resume an art career. The film also details the artist's progression from conventional imagery to award-winning abstract expression, and on to “light paintings” and ethereal, mystical horizon lines and clouds, depicting the meeting space between heaven and earth. “One day I went for a walk with my dog and found a clearing in the forest where I laid down and looked up at the sky, and went to sleep. When I woke up, my depression was gone.” SIngleton had discovered what he wanted to paint: clouds. “They're all about capturing light,” he said, “and no two are the same.” Read more: https://www.wvgazettemail.com/news/acclaimed-hardy-county-artist-subject-of-new-documentary/article_22f16619-1338-5ded-8531-fde36b21d1ed.html #3 – From MY BUCKHANNON – September is National Voter Registration Month. All eligible West Virginia residents are encouraged to register to vote or, if already registered, verify that their information is updated and accurate. Since January 2017, West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner and his staff have worked closely with the county clerks to register 333,575 eligible citizens to vote. Of that number, more than 100,000 have been eligible high school students – many of whom will vote for the first time in the upcoming May 2024 Primary Election. According to Warner, those voters who change their name or get married and assume their spouse's last name are required to update their voter registration. Those voters who have moved their residence since the last election or who may have a new address because of the remapping of the state's 911 system should also update their voter registration. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, June 25 Tudor's Biscuit World remains a staple of Appalachian cuisine and beyond…Make your fall plans now! The 2023 dates for Gauley Season have been released. WV's richest man, Marshall University President Brad D. Smith reflects on giving back to his home state…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – Known for its made-from-scratch biscuit sandwiches, Tudor's Biscuit World has been a staple of Appalachian cuisine since it first opened and is one of the only fast-food chains of its size to originate in West Virginia. Elizabeth Epling, the marketing director for Tudor's, shared some facts about the growing chain, including that, in total, Tudor's has 74 locations, with its 75th opening soon in Inwood, West Virginia, spanning from the Northern Panhandle to the most southern part of the Mountain State. John Tudor, the son of founders Bill and Mae Tudor, operates most of the Huntington locations, and his son, Pat, owns a location in Lexington, Kentucky. And have you ever wondered about the names of the biscuits? Many of them are named after regular customers of the original Tudor's Biscuit World, including the Ron, Dottie, and Tootie. “When someone comes in every day, you tend to get to know that person on a first-name basis, so after a while, when Ron would come in every day for his sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit, it became second nature for the person working at the counter to say, ‘Give me a Ron' rather than a sausage, egg, and cheese,” Epling says. During this time, the Summersville Dam is drawn down at 2,800 cubic feet per second by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to create close to 100 rapids, including nine Class V rapids in 26 miles. Gauley Season 2023 release dates are Sept. 8-11, 15-18, 22-25, Sept. 29-Oct. 2, and Oct. 6-8, 14-15 and 21-22. “Gauley Season is pure excitement in the whitewater rafting world,” said Roger Wilson, CEO of Adventures on the Gorge. “Rafters from all over know exactly what to expect, and they are already letting us know they will be in town for an unsurpassed experience.” Read more: https://www.herald-dispatch.com/news/dates-out-for-whitewater-rafting-on-the-gauley-river/article_47bb7aeb-4dc9-53b7-83a5-e2c7fb679507.html #3 – From MSN – Brad Smith was six years old when a plane carrying the 1970 Marshall University football team crashed a mile from his home near campus in southern West Virginia, killing all 75 people on board. His cousins rushed to aid their dying neighbors as volunteer firefighters. “I watched the flames burn outside my window,” Smith remembers. “And then I watched this community rise from the ashes.” Smith decided to take the country roads back home to West Virginia, the place he belongs—and into the President's House at Marshall, his alma mater, which he took over in January 2022. He brought back with him a sizable fortune, accumulated over nearly four decades in business. According to Forbes' ranking of the richest person in each state, he's West Virginia's wealthiest resident, worth $700 million. The former Intuit CEO, together with his wife Alys, founded Ascend West Virginia, the remote worker program that provides financial incentives and outdoor recreation opportunities to recruit young professionals to move to West Virginia. Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide SIX outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states. We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode forty-eight is West Virginia. The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America. Here's our list for West Virginia: 1. Go white-water rafting on the New & Gauley Rivers: White water rafting is one of the top things to do in West Virginia because there are world-class rapids. The New River features the Upper New, suitable for beginners, and the Lower New, with Class IV rapids that take you past the New River Gorge Bridge. The Gauley River is one of the most popular for experienced rafters, with Class V rapids and the nickname the "Beast of the East." Rapids are most intense here in the fall. 2. Visit Coopers Rock State Forest: Coopers Rock State Forest is named for Coopers Rock, a series of sandstone cliffs above the Cheat River Gorge. Legend has it that a fugitive hid near what is now the overlook. A cooper by trade, he continued to make and sell barrels from his mountain hideout. The forest proper was established in 1936. Many of its structures, including the main overlook, picnic shelters and superintendent’s house, were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Eleven of these structures have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Coopers Rock State Forest Loop is one of the most popular trails at 4.8 mile loop trail 3. Bridge Day on New River Gorge: Bridge Day began in 1980 to commemorate the completion of the picturesque bridge over the New River Gorge. There were 5 BASE jumpers that year. Now, every 3rd Saturday in October, at the peak of the vibrant fall foliage, hundreds come to leap. There are often more than 800 jumps. 4. Climb the East Coast’s Most Remote Peak. The only “true peak” on the East Coast that’s accessible only by rock climbing, Seneca Rocks is an automatic must for climbers. But just because you can’t hit the peak without climbing doesn’t mean you can’t get up high for some amazing views. The hike up the jagged fins of the rock ledges is steep but surprisingly easy, with plenty of rest stops 5. Mountain Bike one of the most rare rated trails in the world. One of only a handful of trails in the world to be awarded “Epic” distinction by the International Mountain Biking Association for its jaw-dropping beauty, the 25-mile North Fork Mountain Trail traces backcountry ridges overlooking the wonder of Seneca Rocks. But it is not for faint of heart. There are no exit points along the rugged route, and no water stops, either. So you have to come prepared— but it’s worth it for one of the most amazing treks of your life. 6. Reach Eagles Level. Our state is full of amazing hikes, but the hike to Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory brings you eye-level with majestic hawks, falcons and eagles as they soar. The old lookout tower on the mountaintop is now one of the nation’s premier outlooks for birds of prey. But the view itself is reward enough: the rolling green mountains seem to stretch out infinitely beneath you before fading into the fog. Thanks for listening to Season 3 of our podcast featuring all 50 US States and some of each state's unique and hopefully lesser known to you Outdoor Adventures. Extreme-sports athlete Lonnie Bedwell is a National Geographic 2015 Adventurer of the Year. He has kayaked some of the most challenging whitewater in the world and is responsible for first blind descents of Africa’s fabled Zambezi River and West Virginia’s world-renowned Gauley River. Lonnie is best known for his first descent of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon — an effort successfully completed during 2013 as part of a team of boaters assembled by Team River Runner. A command performance in the Grand Canyon in 2014 resulted in the Adventurer of the Year nomination. A former Navy Petty Officer, Lonnie was critically injured during 1997 in a hunting accident that instantly took his sight. Nevertheless, he raised three daughters as a single father, teaching them all to hunt and fish — and, against all odds, to drive. Once the girls graduated from high school, Lonnie continued to challenge himself, ultimately becoming a renowned extreme sports athlete. When the threshold for running the Grand Canyon was placed at 1,000 kayak rolls, he took his donated kayak to the pond on his farm and rolled it 1,500 times. The rest is history. Lonnie has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, summited several of North America’s highest mountains, rock climbs, and is an avid downhill skier when he has time away from roofing work in his hometown of Duggar, IN. Lonnie’s mission is to motivate and inspire others to embrace life with confidence and courage. Lonnie is dedicated to helping veterans and many others enjoy full lives and while he is an advocate for the blind, blindness does not define either him or his efforts on behalf of others. Lonnie has appeared on The Today Show and Steve Harvey and has been featured in countless publications. He’s the author of the award-winning book 226 (the length in miles of the Colorado River stretch through the Grand Canyon) and shares his passion for life and adventure with audiences around the country.
