Leading teams, inspiring people, and most recently in his book, Walk the Lyme. In his book, he shares some of the hardest and most challenging moments from this misunderstood condition and how he got through some of the darkest moments in his life.  In This Episode: With habits, it is really important to not skip it for a single day. Your habits define your behaviors which define your life. If you skip one time, you are going to skip two times.  The most important time to do the behavior is when you don't want to do it. You are training your brain to do things you don't want to do. If you have your habits right you're doing the behaviors right and success is really just a bunch of small actions repeated over time.  No leverage, no accountability, no chance. And yes, it's a long-term chronic illness that can be extremely debilitating.  Jean Marie Hatton joins us on this episode to talk about her experience with Lyme and how it has impacted her life. We learn about how easy it is to get, and how many times you can miss the signs (hint: only a small percentage of people get the tell-tale rash from the tick bite).   So sit back and enjoy the episode. Lindsay Bird Nielsen of the Lindsay Report is a longtime friend of mine who has battled with Lyme disease for most of her life, even before she knew what it was. She has also suffered the loss of both her parents and is married to France Nielsen who also lost both of his parents. Lindsay is someone I look to on how to deal with grief myself, and I learned so much about empathy and compassion for those who have Lyme disease by following her Instagram and listening to her stories of what that challenge is really like. So today, I'm walking with Lindsay through her story of Lyme and what has helped her over the years to understand this disease and take back control of her life despite this ongoing challenge. She also shares with me some of her insights on grief, loss, and how to help others struggling after any kind of loss, and what we can do to really understand and love others who are struggling with any of life's challenges.   Time Stamps: [01:00] - Lindsay Nielsen gives a snapshot of her life and how that led to her becoming known on social media. This is Julie, she has lived with Lyme disease, she was diagnosed in 2016 after 6 years of misdiagnosis. After her trip to Asia, she quickly became sick, dealing with so many different physical symptoms, as well as major mental health struggles as well. She lived with depression and anxiety for years, and it wasn't until she worked with a naturopath that helped her get her diagnosis with lyme, who then helped her get in touch with a Lyme literate doctor. Indicating that she had Lyme and malaria, parasites and Epstein bar. So she started a 10 month protocol, a very expensive out of pocket protocol at that! This protocol was constantly changing her physical health and mental wellbeing. The Herxing effect was immense that caused so many severe psychological effects, she mentions that the words depression and anxiety don't even describe the effects that she was living with, feeling bouts of manic and psychosis - a complete roller coaster. She lives day to day, good days and bad days but continues to stay strong for herself and advocating for others.

Dr. Moore's Story   I was an all-American college athlete, and I felt strong all through college. Dr. Moore said at the time he didn't understand why he hit that wall after college and barely had energy. During chiropractic school, he started eating clean and was feeling amazing.  Just as Dr. Moore began to feel lively again, it all crashed down. He was fatigued and had erectile dysfunction in his twenties. As he went to see doctors, he noticed that they kept wanting to prescribe medications for the symptoms – rather than looking at why it's happening. No one had an answer for him. Until he met with a doctor in Wisconsin that was able to diagnose and treat his Lyme disease.  Now, he feels healthy and strong.   What is Lyme Disease?    Lyme technically is a bacteria that can burrow very well in your tissue. You can get it from any type of organism that bites: mosquito, tick, spider, flea, etc. Lyme can also be transferred from mother to daughter.  While it's just a bacteria like strep, Lyme is a little bit more challenging to take care of because it doesn't stay in your bloodstream. It burrows, which means it goes after the white tissue and the brain tissue. Some studies show that it gets into your brain in twelve hours. Whereas a lot of infections can not get into the brain that easily.  Because of its burrowing quality, chronic Lyme doesn't respond well to antibiotics. Once Lyme is in your body, it weakens your system. “I call it Lyme and friends,” Dr. Moore said because this disease almost always has co-infections.  How To Know If You Have Lyme    If you have just Lyme, you may never know. Your body may be able to handle it. However, once your immune system starts to weaken, whether it's from emotional stress or a virus, then it may start to show itself.  The number one symptom of Lyme is migratory pain, which is pain that just kind of moves around your body. One day you may be hurting in your back, and the next day the pain will move to your arm.  The next sign is headaches, especially ones right along the back of your neck. Numbness that makes no sense at all is also a symptom of Lyme disease. Some other patterns of those with Lyme are general fatigue and achiness in your hands. However, Lyme is called the great mimicker. There are about 150 symptoms of it, and often doctors will fall back on Lyme when it may be something else that's causing these symptoms.       What Causes Most Diseases in the World Dr. Moore breaks down what causes most diseases.  Toxins  These are things like chemicals in your food and mold.  Infections   This is Lyme and all its friends.  Trauma  This factor includes physical and emotional trauma.     How Long Does It Take to Get Rid of Lyme?    This is an eighteen-month to two-year process. It's not a fast process because you have to work through building the body back up, optimizing the immune system, and getting the mitochondria healthy.  While you do those things, you're also working on healing all your infections that came with Lyme. “I don't typically see somebody that has less than 8-10 infections when they come into my clinic at least,” Dr. Moore said.    How Do You Know if There's Mold in Your House?    Look where there potentially is dampness. So look around your sink, in your bathroom, windows, washers, and plants.  One mold test I recommend is Ermi. It's a dust sample that runs for about $300, but I think it's the best thing on the market. With mold cases, a lot of the time it has to do with the host. Two people can live under the same roof and one person gets ill, while the other isn't affected at all. Lyme and mold have to have the right hosts.  Mold is awful for your immune system. Parasites One of Dr. Moore's friends said that if you have a pulse, you probably have parasites. That may be an overstatement, but we pick up organisms from our food. We don't just eat food from our backyards. We eat it from around the world.  In the US, we have a lot of sugar in our diets which just feed the yeast and parasites. Many people have digestive tract issues, but we don't take a deeper look at them. It may be parasites. There are thousands of parasites, so consider deworming. Parasites have spent a millennium figuring out how to hide in the guts of different organisms so they don't trigger an immune response. Because there are thousands of parasites, most don't show up on testing.  Don't forget how powerful the human body is though. Our innate body intelligence and the immune system can overcome almost anything if we put in the work.   Making Health Simple Dr. Moore's Answers: What is one action that we can take today after this episode to move us toward becoming superhuman?  Take imperfect action for your health. Start drinking distilled water. That's a simple action for you. Distilled water is the only kind of water that removes some of the radioactive elements that we're finding are absolutely destroying the mitochondria.    What's Next? We have put together a dashboard of all of Dr. Bart's videos, based on health topics, in our Level-Up Health Membership, and the first month is free. Maddie Tretter was an accomplished Division 1 swimmer at Cleveland State, preparing for the Olympic Trials, when she she started coming down with a laundry list of seemingly unrelated symptoms: panic attacks, nausea, migraines, swollen joints and more. After trying several treatments with no success, Maddie was encouraged when she finally tested positive for Lyme disease - she figured now that she had a diagnosis, she'd complete a course of antibiotics and be back in the pool. Despite treatment, her symptoms continued to worsen to the point where she could barely keep down food or walk to the mailbox.  At the encouragement of a family friend, she began working with a functional medicine practitioner who used an array of traditional, alternative, and integrative therapies, and slowly her symptoms began to improve. Says Maddie, “Treating my whole body and not just trying to cover it up with a pill changed my life.” After nearly two years of treatment, Maddie was finally able to re-join her collegiate swim team and finish out her senior year. These days Maddie credits prioritizing her nutrition and active lifestyle with helping her remain symptom-free.  “I know to stay healthy and functioning I can't sacrifice the little easy things. Advice I would give to other people going through my experience are not to give up and to always always advocate for yourself.” You can connect with Maddie via Instagram @maddietretter Related Episodes: Ep 73 - Caroline Burckle & Rebecca Soni: Olympic Swimmers RISEing to the Occasion Ep 104 - Physical Therapist & CrossFit Games Athlete Amanda Barnhart

In this episode of the podcast the doctors interview Cindy Kennedy, MS, FNP-BC. Cindy is a nurse practitioner who practices functional medicine and has a special interest in Lyme Disease. While there are many things that can trigger hypothyroidism, Lyme disease is being discussed more as a possible trigger for some with hypothyroidism.  In this episode the following topics are covered: Brief history of Lyme disease? Is Lyme disease at epidemic proportions? Why Lyme disease can be so difficult to treat if not caught early on? What is the association between Lyme and thyroid issues How to address Lyme and hypothyroidism Cindy loves working with people who need compassion and help dealing with chronic health issues that have gone unresolved with general medical care.  The belief that everyone deserves optimal wellness, is the driving factor behind her starting to practice functional medicine.  Her own struggles with undiagnosed Lyme disease was the very beginning of the journey into the functional medical space. While working in health care for more than 20 yrs. as a Nurse Practitioner, she began having unexplainable health issues with multiple symptoms.  This is when she became the patient as she started her journey with Lyme disease. Her basic allopathic training was not enough to get to the root of why her body was unable to heal from Lyme disease. Working on diet, stress reduction, detoxification, sleep strategies and light exercise she realized that just antibiotics and herbs were not going to help her heal. It was the whole-body approach that would make the difference. Because true healing after a chronic illness does not happen overnight, Cindy learned to have patience and belief in the process. It became time for her to help others and in 2017, she began using podcasting as a way to help people learn more about Lyme disease. Her show, Living With Lyme. Has been well received and has become a wonderful resource for many. This site is available at: http://livingwithlyme.us After practicing gynecology for over 20 years, she left to pursue her passion to help others more thoroughly. Studying with the Institute of Functional Medicine and the School of Applied Functional Medicine she and her daughter Kerah, a registered dietitian, opened their functional medicine practice, Pursue Wellness. They work both in person and virtually. In today's episode I was joined by Amit, Director of Apt Search & Selection, a specialist UK based recruitment agency in the eDiscovery market  In 2014, shortly after the launch of his business, Amit's life was in great shape. He was working extremely hard and seeing early business success whilst at the same time about to get married. In the run up to his wedding, Amit was unlucky enough to be bitten by a ‘tick' in the leg and contracted Lyme Disease.  After such diagnoses, Amit then suffered with consistent physical and mental health challenges with no obvious sign of a cure. In this episode, we talked about How this all happened out of the blue How this disease took over his life  The effects on his marriage and business How he had to travel to the US in order to find treatment that made the difference How he managed to keep recruiting throughout the whole ordeal! A great guy with a unique story to tell, I hope this helps raise awareness of Lyme Disease (I knew nothing about it|) and show how resilient recruitment owners can really be!! Episode SummarySometimes Western medicine does not have all the answers. Evan Golub discovered this first hand after seeing over 30 different practitioners and receiving numerous misdiagnoses which left him frustrated and alone. This frustration lasted for 4 years until a functional medicine doctor finally got to the root cause of his sickness and properly diagnosed him with Lyme disease. Evan started interacting with other “Lyme buddies” and he realized the world needed a social media platform that is entirely dedicated to health conditions. Evan co-founded Wana (we are not alone) which created a simple way for people with chronic and invisible illnesses to find support, comfort, and also discover new ways to manage symptoms.Syd FinkelsteinSyd Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He holds a Masters degree from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Professor Finkelstein has published 25 books and 90 articles, including the bestsellers Why Smart Executives Fail and Superbosses: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent, which LinkedIn Chairman Reid Hoffman calls the “leadership guide for the Networked Age.” He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Management, a consultant and speaker to leading companies around the world, and a top 25 on the global Thinkers 50 list of top management gurus. Professor Finkelstein's research and consulting work often relies on in-depth and personal interviews with hundreds of people, an experience that led him to create and host his own podcast, The Sydcast, to uncover and share the stories of all sorts of fascinating people in business, sports, entertainment, politics, academia, and everyday life. Evan Golub:Evan Golub is the co-founder and CEO of Wana (we are not alone), a community platform that fosters hope, direction, and healing for people with chronic and invisible conditions. Before launching Wana, Evan spent 13 years working in the hedge fund industry. His decision to pivot direction stemmed from his own experience with chronic illness, which included seeing 30 practitioners over four years before finally learning he had Lyme. After his diagnosis, Evan began to dedicate himself to getting smart on his condition and helping others do the same. Creating a community of “Lyme buddies” brought him incredible satisfaction and purpose, and it ultimately led to Wana, which he co-founded in 2018. Evan lives and breathes wellness, and when he's not exploring the newest trend in integrative health, he can be found on his yoga mat or at acupuncture. Cindy Kennedy In this Lyme disease podcast episode, I interview Cindy Kennedy ( www.pursuewellness.us ). Cindy is a Nurse Practitioner who worked in women’s health for over 20 years.  She practiced gynecology and has cared for thousands of patients. Unbeknownst to her, she contracted Lyme disease.  She never saw a tick, or a bullseye rash. Her symptoms were subtle at first, and then in 2011 her disease struck with vengeance.  Even as a knowledgeable health care professional, the struggles to find a cause became overwhelming.   In general, she discovered that health care professionals are not adequately trained to recognize and treat Lyme disease and its co-infections.  She came to feel the same sinking feeling that other Lyme sufferers must bear; the endless walk down the frightening path of misdiagnosis, shattered hope, and disappointment. Resources for learning were not very credible. As her health improved she became passionate about providing education and guidance for those seeking information about Lyme disease, health and healing. All this has led to the development of her popular Lyme disease podcast series, Living With Lyme (www.livingwithlyme.us ) and her private practice, Pursue Wellness. "I think I came out of the womb wanting to make the world a better place.” Noelle Janka This simple quote simply sums up Noelle. She was 15 years old when she launched her first grassroots campaign. She’s made extensive progress with the causes she’s passionate about. Several more recent successful campaigns includes her participation with an effort to increase federal auto fuel efficiency standards; another one was the first campaign to elect President Barack Obama. She was the first board president of the Boston Cyclists Union for a year and a half, guiding the group and masterminding the group's internship and volunteer training programs. Today, Noelle has another way of showing her open-handed support to others who are aiming to become social change leaders through coaching, mentoring and consulting. As a trained life coach she’s pursuing certification from the Academy for Coaching Excellence.   What’s in this episode:   Getting disability, losing disability: Noelle had her first symptoms when she was 16 years old and in high school. Like many Lyme folks she had been through the road of misdiagnosis and ceaseless symptoms until her Mom took matters into her hands and decided to put her foot down on getting Noelle tested for Lyme in New York. After she’s diagnosed she went in search for help, relief and solutions. Which she found and then she had been in remission for 1 year where she’s back to feeling and living normally until a traumatic biking accident triggered her symptoms. The trauma caused her symptoms to escalate and extend, symptoms that can still pain her until today. Although she’s found ways to manage her symptoms they still act up all of a sudden making her less functional and not capable of lucid tasks on some days. Finding flexible work: She had come to a point in her career and life where she has finally acknowledged she is sick and told everybody at home and at work that she’s sick. She had dabbled in a number of jobs until she was offered a managerial position after a series of short term jobs, and when they knew what’s actually happening to her, what she’s going through, they made an arrangement for her to work a flexible schedule around her sickness. Despite all the leeway given to her she came to a point where she admitted that’s it’s not really working and she quit work. That’s when she found her coach. Lauryn Wendus of Lauryn, The Next Door Entrepreneur is with Aaron and Sarah and in this episode they talked about how Lauryn had lived through her Lyme illness and about the financial success she is able to accomplish in the midst of her personal struggle with Lyme. Lyme had impacted Lauryn’s life at her early 20s, 23 to be exact. And she is definitely an inspiration, for in the face of of her personal perceptions of being moderately incapacitated by her Lyme symptoms during the most debilitating period of her illness; she was still able to take control of her life and her career. She had come to terms with the truth that if she wishes her life to amount to something in her condition she has to make somewhat positive all the huge negativity that is slowly encompassing her. She is a fighter and she is not going to let Lyme drag her down into dependency. She turned her perceived physical weaknesses into something positive. Into a get-up-and-go stimulus to make herself successful in ways her now constrained physical stamina, which is being weakened by Lyme allows her to. Instead of letting Lyme take over her life and pin her down, she used her recovery time to assess her life and what’s left in it. She knows she is capable of many things so she picked up her act which had managed to get strewn about and resolved to not let Lyme cut off her wings.   “She really embodies the spirit of Fight.Heal.Live in the sense of recognizing that in some capacity life is not gonna go forward as it used to and then proactively taking stuffs to take care of herself.” Sarah   Aaron and Sarah identify themselves in Lauryn. That’s why they made sure their fortuitous meeting via Twitter will give them the break they need to make Lauryn’s story one of their Lyme Voice’s Episode Podcast. The three of them acknowledge they had been through the same Fight.Heal journey and are now on the same boat riding out the tumultuous passage of their Live journey. Together they will make Lauryn’s Lyme story a Lyme Voice’s story.   Episode Outline Intro Aaron and Sarah talk about their recent week, a large week for them because Sarah was able to enjoy her younger brother’s wedding. A large week indeed, for Sarah was able to coherently enjoy the event unlike her younger sister’s wedding before which she had attended with a third voice in her head telling her not to make her weakness show all the time. People with Lyme have lots of internal issues that nobody sees outwardly. They may appear okay on the outside but actually they’re not. They all agree they had been through this feeling before, and honestly acknowledged the fact that there were times they had to somehow fight the battle on their own, because nobody can perceive that they are slowly withering inside, grasping for the straws dangling at the periphery of existence for energy is slowly ebbing out from them without anyone noticing. Lauryn’s Hers is a classic story of a life with an undiagnosed Lyme illness. Lauryn tells how she as an ambitious young 23 years old, at that time enjoying her financial corporate career, suddenly feels some weakening stamina and foggy mental awareness. The symptoms come and go and at first, and she didn’t know she has Lyme. She’s never had all the characteristic symptoms connected to Lyme before her diagnosis. No bull’s eye rash, nothing, so at first Lyme was not the suspected diagnosis. She was misdiagnosed with Lymphoma because of the swollen lymph nodes and some misleading blood works. She had gone through the same conditions that other patients with Lyme had experienced despite being devoid of the usual Lyme disease flags. So it came as a surprise to her and her family, her Lyme disease diagnosis. But she didn’t give up she decided to face her symptoms head-on. She went through almost the same Fight journey with Sarah; that sudden feeling of being overly fatigued all of a sudden, swollen lymph nodes and all. But it was the blurry visions one day when she was driving to work which jolted her to finally acknowledge something was definitely wrong. She speaks of her journey to self-realization which she was able to finally create in her mind. While lying down in bed bogged down by the different symptoms she was undergoing, of making something with her life with Lyme. And from her education too, to earn what she needs to be able to live because a life with Lyme is a high cost existence. That was the point of acceptance for her, when she told herself okay if you can’t get rid of Lyme how about creating a life with Lyme, her Fight Lyme Story. The biggest part of which was focused on gaining back her mental coherence, of backing backwards before she can go forward, a very humbling experience for her. “After trying basic part-time work but still unable to sustain the required schedule without my condition deteriorating, I was left with few options.” Lauryn She has an interesting start as an entrepreneur. Her Heal Lyme Story. Although she studied about business and its subjects in college and was able to graduate with a degree in business, the basics of being an entrepreneur were not taught to them at school. So she had to grope in the dark how to and what kind of business she is going to have, because she knew then, that she can no longer work in a normal corporate environment. During those moments of soul and mind searching the idea of publishing her scribbled works had not occurred to her. Her story writing talent was not an actuality at that time. It came as an accident and had started when her Lyme symptoms altered her so much mentally she started writing with her left hand though she was right handed her entire life before that. The novelty of her left handed writing ability had amazed her so much she was scribbling in a notebook, children stories inspired by Oliver the cat who was her constant companion while she lay in bed so much. But then in retrospection she recognized the potential and so she took the power of the internet into her hands and she tried to find answers. She started her business broke and with the help of her mother, because Lyme has taken over the bulk of her finances. She detailed how she used creating a business as her Heal motivation and she recounts all the interesting events during the start of her entrepreneurial career. She shares her Fight.Heal.Live Lyme story with the hope to be able to give people who are living lives with Lyme just like her and Sarah, that there is indeed life after or with Lyme. She wants to convey assurance that definitely you’re going to get better from a Lyme illness and definitely Lyme disease exists. She was able to figure this all out during the past 3 years, the total span of her entire life with Lyme so far. As an entrepreneur she’s created 3 businesses which are connected to her live your life with Lyme “After all, if I can do it, so can you.” cause: The Oliver Poons Children’s Brand: Happy, whimsical, rhyming children’s stories and accessories. A Different Kind of Work: A website to help people find, share, and combine their skills to create new job opportunities outside of the traditional job market. Ribbon Star Press: Consulting and publishing services to help new authors make their dreams of publishing a reality. “As it is often stated, change is the only constant in life. Life is full of twists and turns, and circumstances that seem set in stone can become nonexistent at a moment’s notice. The name Next Door Creations was inspired by the idea that no matter how things may seem in life, it’s important to always have faith that the next door of opportunity will present itself. Whether the “next door” is a spark of the imagination, an event you attend, or a person you meet, something, somehow, will always appear, and the opportunity to seize a new path will emerge. From there are infinite possibilities; endless ways to create something new.” -Lauryn Alyssa Wendus   You can sign up for a newsletter at her Website: http://laurynwendus.com/ You may contact her or email her with:  info@nextdoorcreations.com   Don’t forget your Audible download! http://www.audibletrial.com/LymeVoice
