While Philip was leading the rapid growth of the church in Samaria, a messenger from God sent him far South on a desert road to meet an Ethiopian eunuch who was returning home. Read to explain the scriptures, the Eunuch not only received Christ but was baptised along the side of the road. We explore the power of the gospel and why it is good news for this man searching for God.

Send us a textIn this episode, we continue to discuss why am I a member of the Church of Christ by looking at more passages that mention baptism as well as repentance and confession. Glenn noted what Mark said in chapter 16 and pointed out that to understand what he said is as simple as reading the passage. Luke recorded what Jesus said about repentance and Fred noted that. Eric read what Philip said when an angel sent him to talk with the Ethiopian eunuch who was reading what Isaiah wrote in chapter 53. Philip began, as Acts 8 says, at the same scripture and preached Jesus to him. Eric points out the specific actions the eunuch was told to do. Arnie takes us to the record of what Ananias told Paul he must do after he spent 3 days blind in Damascus and reminds us of what the record says baptism does. Glenn takes us to Acts 19 where we have an instance where 12 men who had been baptized by John were instructed by Paul as to why they needed to be rebaptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Fred looks at what Peter said when he compared Noah and his family being saved by water and how that relates to baptism. We continue on to notice that Paul told the Galatians how one gets in Christ. Paul explains how baptism and circumcision are related, and Eric looks at what Paul wrote about that. We discuss how baptism is a reenactment of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus as Paul explains it in Romans chapter 6. Glenn discusses our need to be faithful until we die as Jesus said in Revelation chapter 2. He notes that John gave us the guidance on how we can accomplish this in First John chapter 1. We close this episode out by pointing out that these Bible verses that we have been discussing are God's words and His commandments that He has provided us in written form for us to follow. And by obeying His words, we will be saved and added to His Church by Him. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. From the royal courts of Babylon to the Acts of the Apostles, eunuchs appear in some of the most intriguing corners of the biblical story. But what did it really mean to be a eunuch in antiquity? Were they trusted chamberlains at the heart of ancient empires, symbols of inclusion at the edges of faith, or even 'angel'-like beings transcending the ordinary categories of gender? In this episode, Helen and Lloyd are joined by Shaun Tougher to explore the lives of eunuchs in the ancient world and their reception in early Christianity. Shaun Tougher is Professor or Late Roman Byzantine History at Cardiff University and the author of The Roman Castrati: Eunuchs in the Roman Empire (2022). He is a world-leading expert in the study of eunuchs. We see that Philip was submissive to the Lord even when told to go to a desert and a man was saved.
Fourteen centuries of enslavement, from the Prophet Muhammad's day to modern Mauritania. Justin Marozzi's fascinating book "Captives and Companions" has as its subject the complex history of slavery across the Islamic world, challenging simplistic narratives and revealing uncomfortable truths about power, race, and religion. Our conversation touches on how Islam didn't invent slavery but incorporated existing practices while encouraging manumission. We talk about the huge diversity of slavery - from the devastating Zanj Rebellion when East African slaves revolted in Iraq, to the paradoxical power of Mamluk slave-soldiers who became sultans. I particularly liked how Justin managed to balance the brilliance and the cruelty of the concubines at the court in Baghdad at the height of its power. We also spent a lot of time discussing eunuchs. What purpose they served, the way Islam got round the prohibition on the practice and how and why the use of eunuchs lasted so long. The racial side of things was a surprise to me. Primary sources from Islam's greatest medieval intellectuals expose deeply racist attitudes toward black Africans, while white Circassian slaves commanded premium prices. And the Barbary Corsairs provided another surprise, with a surprising number of Europeans who "turned Turk" to join Muslim pirates enslaving fellow Christians across the Mediterranean. When we reach abolition, Marozzi talked about how external Western pressure, not internal Islamic reform, primarily drove formal emancipation. And his interviews with people in Mali and Mauritania document hereditary slavery continuing today, with miserable stories of those fighting for freedom in the 21st century. You can send a message to the show/feedback by clicking here. Join Helen and her new co-host, ancient history Prof. Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones, as they discuss what they're working on at the moment: everything from ancient Babylon, the Hittites and Persia's first lady to ancient 'lives' and the historical Mary. They are also joined by the show's new researcher and producer, Dr John Nelson. They explore John's research on the absence of a physical description of Jesus in the Gospels, and ask how Jesus came to acquire the familiar appearance he has today. In this hard-hitting follow-up, author Medha ji dismantles pop-culture myths around the Mughals and revisits why Ch. Shivaji Maharaj's revolution mattered. She challenges romanticized screen portrayals (Salim the “hero,” Akbar the “liberal”) with court chronicles and references, then contrasts them with Ch. Shivaji's governance—protecting civilians, punishing molestation, and easing agrarian burdens. We also examine the human cost of imperial monuments—extraction from farmers, enslavement, famine—and ecological shifts like poppy displacing native crops, alongside Jahangir's own tally of mass hunts. Finally, we address textbook narratives that blur the Maratha handover to the British—and why remembering accurately matters now. Cori returns from San Francisco with brief tales of the Endocrine Society before launching into crazy population projections (AGAIN) and then making some rather provocative arguments. What are Human Rights? Can children consent to irreversible decisions? Is the individual the most important unit of society? Are women never competent? Has Cori been wearing Nina down for an hour and a half, or just an hour? Zheng He commanded the massive Treasure Fleet in early Ming China. He survived a rather burtal childhood, and rose up to the highest position ever for a Eunuch. He sailed all over the Indian Ocean, and if it weren't for a change of Emperor (something that happened often in his time) he might have reached areas of the globe hundreds of years prior to when Explorers of Europe did. Message by Fred Hartsook, recorded live June 29, 2025 at First Presbyterian Church of Bellingham. Scripture read by Diane Tate.Stay CuriousPhilip and the Ethiopian Eunuch - evangelism is done one-by-one - the Spirit directs all times and places - stay curious. What strikes you about the Eunuch? How does Philip welcome one who was not allowed to enter the temple. How can you be like Philip — meeting people where they are and walking with them toward Jesus? Is there anything holding you back from full obedience to Jesus? What happens when Philip is taken away?Acts 8:26-4026 Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a wilderness road.) 27 So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, the queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship 28 and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” 30 So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. 32 Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this:“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth.33 In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.”34 The eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” 35 Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. 36 As they were going along the road, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” 38 He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more and went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.
In this powerful message from Shane Willard, originally shared at the CIM Network Conference hosted by Hill City Church, we explore one of the most challenging and freeing questions for the Church today: Are we building fences to keep people out, or digging wells to draw people in?Using the story of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8, Shane unpacks what it means to move from a fence-based to a well-based faith - where inclusion, love, and transformation take priority over exclusion and rule-keeping. This teaching will stretch your perspective, challenge old paradigms, and inspire you to reimagine what it means to be a follower of Jesus in today's world.00:00 - Intro & Podcast Update01:14 - Why We're Sharing Shane Willard's Sermons02:54 - Shane's Opening & Vision for the Weekend06:48 - Two Framing Stories10:46 - From Fences to Wells11:13 - Acts 8 and the Eunuch's Question17:05 - Fence-Based vs. Well-Based Paradigms23:03 - The Unexpected Fruit in Ethiopia23:47 - 10 Contrasts Between Fence & Well-Based Churches27:06 - Hiddenness vs. Honesty in Church Culture28:09 - Measuring Distance vs. Direction31:24 - The Atheist Door Greeter Story33:04 - Legal Transaction vs. Way of Life36:12 - Heaven Now, Not Just Someday37:01 - God for Me vs. God for the World39:06 - From ‘Saved' to ‘Thirsty'40:09 - What Makes a Thirsty Culture?41:47 - Jesus Redefines Access at the Temple43:30 - Wrestling With Application47:56 - Are We Digging Wells or Building Fences?49:06 - Final Blessing & Challenge

In this episode, Rob Griffin unpacks the story of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8, inviting us to see it not just as a story of conversion, but as a radical moment of inclusion. With historical insight and theological depth, Rob explores how eunuchs in the ancient world represented gender and sexual minorities—and how scripture speaks directly to their belovedness.Through passages from Isaiah, Matthew, and Acts, this teaching reaffirms God's welcome to those often left out. Eastertide is the season we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The resurrection isn't just a one time event to commemorate, it is instead a world altering reality that invites us into a whole new way of living. We see this on full display for the earliest followers of Jesus who found their lives and world upturned by their surprising king who defeated death, sin, and the powers of evil not through violence but love. Jesus' self-sacrificial, other oriented love was vindicated in the resurrection and served as the way of life for early followers.

This week we're reading the story of Philip, and the Ethiopian eunuch as told in Acts 8:26-39. In that story, an angel tells Philip to approach the chariot of an Ethiopian eunuch who is heading home from his visit to the Temple in Jerusalem. When he approaches the chariot, Philip hears the eunuch reading Isaiah 53, one of the songs of the suffering servant. When the eunuch asks Phillip to help him understand, Phillip interprets the gospel for him, leading the eunuch to ask for baptism. We discuss the role of Philip in this text as a human intermediary for the Holy Spirit, going where he is called and meeting people where they are. And we discuss the eunuch, who has been seeking community elsewhere but finally finds full welcome in the community of Christians. And we wrestle with our own offerings of the welcome, and the ways that we, too, can be conduits of the Spirit, knowing when to teach and when to get out of the way.

In one of our most horrifying episodes yet, we look at a man who clamped and amputated the genitals of potentially hundreds of men, and carried out unimaginable sexual torture – all from his basement flat in North London. But what makes this story truly unbelievable is that every one of those victims wanted for it to happen. They belonged to a secretive community of 'nullos' – people who fantasise about the removal of sexual organs. And each procedure was filmed and streamed for a waiting online community of tens of thousands of members. There, disembodied penises and testicles were auctioned off… and even eaten. It's time to discover the savage online empire of the Eunuch Maker.Exclusive bonus content:Wondery - Ad-free & ShortHandPatreon - Ad-free & Bonus EpisodesFollow us on social media:YouTubeTikTokInstagramVisit our website:WebsiteSources available on redhandedpodcast.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hi friends, happy Wednesday! Over many cultures and many years, being a Eunuch--or someone who has been castrated--has meant something different. Like In ancient China, Eunuchs were thought to be more trustworthy, so they became political advisors. Or In Italy, they realized it stopped men's voices from developing. So Eunuchs formed a special class of opera singers. Sometimes the process of becoming a Eunuch was voluntary… And other times… not so much. It was done by force or even coercion. But where did these traditions start? Well my friends, today, we're talking about the dark history of … EUNUCHS. I appreciate you coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History. ________ FOLLOW ME AROUND Tik Tok: https://bit.ly/3e3jL9v Instagram: http://bit.ly/2nbO4PR Facebook: http://bit.ly/2mdZtK6 Twitter: http://bit.ly/2yT4BLV Pinterest: http://bit.ly/2mVpXnY Youtube: http://bit.ly/1HGw3Og Snapchat: https://bit.ly/3cC0V9d Discord: https://discord.gg/BaileySarian RECOMMEND A STORY HERE: cases4bailey@gmail.com Business Related Emails: baileysarianteam@wmeagency.com Business Related Mail: Bailey Sarian 4400 W. Fr. Mike focuses on the story of Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch and how it demonstrates the importance of having guidance when reading Scripture. Although God's Word is infallible, we can easily misunderstand it without proper interpretation, which is why we have the Magisterium of the Church. Lastly, Fr. Mike also touches on the role of persecution in the life of the Church, and St. Paul's encouragement to abide by the law of love. Today we read Acts 8, Romans 13-14, and Proverbs 27:15-17.
