Welcome to the very first episode of The Soaring Child Podcast! This show offers hope to families of children with ADHD and helps them learn to thrive at home, at school, and in life using food and natural strategies. Our host, Dana Kay, is a Board Certified Holistic Health and Nutrition Practitioner. Her promise to parents is that you can reduce your child's symptoms. You can have a calm and peaceful household that you know you deserve. To kick off the podcast, Dana shares her personal journey, from the fateful revelation that her own son Oliver had ADHD, to the moment she began to question the “experts” and their overreliance on medication, to dedicating her life to helping thousands of families just like hers turn their lives around for the better! Takeaways: [1:19] As a parent, you can get control over your child's ADHD symptoms without too much pain, years of education, or trial-and-error. [2:28] Dana shares her experience in raising her own ADHD son in a variety of environments. [6:25] Dana explains how her pediatrician's treatment plan for her son did more harm than good. [8:57] Medication, as it turned out, did more harm than good. Dana began questioning the “experts” and eventually decided to turn to natural methods. [11:12] Dana lays out the steps she took to reduce her son's symptoms to the point where he seemed a completely different kid in just three months. Memorable Quotes: “You can reduce your child's symptoms. You can have a calm and peaceful household that you know you deserve.” "I believe that every child, ADHD or not, deserves the opportunity to soar.” "I find focus to be one of the last things that improve as you heal the gut.”

There isn't a child on the planet incapable of achieving their dreams, according to Salome Thomas-EL – they just need someone “crazy about them.” On this episode of FranklinCovey Education's Change Starts Here, host Dustin Odham welcomed “Principal EL” to the program to share his core beliefs about love, belief, perseverance, courage, overcoming adversity and more. In addressing over 100,000 educators, parents, students and community members throughout his time speaking, Principal EL has endeavored to help audiences think deeply and critically about how we can change the culture of education, foster environments that cater to students' tremendous potential, and build resilience in our children. “I love making an impact on the lives of young people and adults,” he said. “As a kid, myself, I was supported by teachers – many of them who did not look like me. … Helping us achieve our dreams.” The impact of those teachers, particularly in helping students overcome barriers to success and difficult family and community environments, moved EL to become an educator himself. As he puts it, it's about telling kids, “You can be me, because I was once you.” Environments that inspire hope can be developed in myriad ways, including one that may not immediately come to mind – chess. Professor EL has led and overseen many championship chess teams, all made up of students who found something to drive them toward community, self-improvement, discipline and more.

Today my special guest is Adrienne Elliott, the Executive Director of Heart of Adoptions Inc and Heart of Adoptions Alliance Florida. She has worked in all aspects of the child welfare system including intake, child protection, permanency and adoption. She was an adjunct faculty member for the University of Denver and Metropolitan State University and taught courses in Family Social Work, Foster Care and Adoption and co-taught a college level course for caseworkers and mental health professionals in Adoption Competence. Adrienne holds her Master of Social Work from the University of Denver and her Bachelor of Science from Purdue University. Adrienne just recently moved from Denver Colorado where she was the ED for a private non-profit adoption agency and CEO of a social enterprise focused on online post adoption services for families. She works with families looking to adopt children and has just started a new program called Hearts to Home, adopting from foster care. Ultimately, Adrienne would like to start her own consulting business working with non-profits to help them scale and become self-sufficient. Adrienne is the parent of two sons, ages 21 and 24 years old. Her oldest just graduated from CU and her youngest is attending MSU in Denver. Adrienne has lived in Denver for 25 years and prior to that she lived and grew up in Carmel, Indiana. The unfortunate reality is that many children don't have loving homes that they can call their own. According to adoptuskids.org and youthtoday.org, "there are currently more than 400,000 children in foster care in the United States. Roughly 20,000 youth are forced to exit the system annually without having found a forever family, leaving them to fend for themselves. Tragically, 25 percent of these young adults will experience homelessness within the first year of leaving foster care, and 50 percent of these youth will be homeless within the first four years. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the innovative solution that Adrienne is bringing to this problem." My guest today is a longtime friend Norita Drake. She has lived in TX for 34 years and is widely known among friends as being a great cook. I personally can attest to this and have enjoyed some of her dishes over the years. I especially got a sample one Thanksgiving many years ago when my wife and I spent Thanksgiving Day with Norita and her late husband, Earl. Norita has served and continues to serve in ministry support roles. Currently serving as a kid ministry assistant. Norita has shared her story publicly because she wants “adoption to be more considered, accepted, and sought after.” So, more people will know “Every child deserves a mother and a father!"

Three Things I've Learned with Susan Dolci: Sharing the Stories That Shift Our Souls
Many of us are not aware that 1 in 5 children live in poverty. One telling sign of this poverty is a kid's shoes. So many kids are teased and ridiculed just because of their worn out shoes. Hand me downs might provide a larger pair of shoes but it can't boost a kids morale and sense of self-worth like a brand new pair of athletic shoes. That's where Shoes That Fit comes in. They partner with local schools and chapters to provide brand new shoes to kids in need. Working with companies like Nordstrom they are able to impact a child's self-esteem, more physical activity and improved school attendance. Join me as I chat with Amy Fass, CEO of Shoes That Fit to learn how and why the organization was founded and how you can help. Giving Tuesday is only a few weeks away and you can make a difference in a kid's life!

As the title says, every child deserves a future. This is also one of the quotes burned into my mind after speaking with ex-Etihad crew Eva Kernova.Along with co-founder Sunil Baroi, and Mohammed Loch they are transforming the lives of many children within the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Many of you might think that the life of airline crew is just glamorous, going from one city to another... shopping, swimming, sightseeing. But, it can also be a whole lot more than this, as we are often thrust into cities where we can see things that you can't even imagine. Eva utilised this opportunity as cabin crew to be able to spend more time in a few of these places while on her holidays. She found this to be a completely eye-opening experience, and felt that she could do more, and try to make a difference. Find out in this episode how this all came about, and what her and the foundation are doing to really make the lives of over 160 children so much better.
Today I talk with Susan Rameriz, founder of Austin Angels. Austin Angels is a non-profit that helps improves the lives of foster care children. We talk about how to come alongside all children so they feel worthy and loved. Susan left a high paying corporate job to do something that gave her purpose and to do work on behalf of others. We talk about what that looks like, and how to lean into a calling for our lives even when we don’t have all the answers. She was invited to a foster care conference and it changed her entire life. Listen to this powerful story. Susan also gives us some simple steps to love vulnerable children well and we talk about the ins and outs of the non-profit world. November is National Adoption Month! Recently we’ve seen a wave of ‘license to discriminate’ bills in ten states that allow foster care and adoption agencies to discriminate against LGBTQ children, youth and qualified prospective parents. The Every Child Deserves a Family campaign promotes the best interests of all children in the foster care and adoption system by increasing their access to loving, stable, forever homes, and works to ensure safe and supportive care for LGBTQ youth seeking family formation. Julie Kruse, Family Equality Council's Director of Federal Policy and Schylar Baber, CEO of Youth Dynamics of Montana, join the host to share personal stories and dive into what LGBTQ youth and parents are facing in the child welfare system. Get inspired to take action!

“Every child deserves to be warmly greeted, to have their name used positively, and to be hugged, high-fived, hand-shaked, or at least smiled at by their teacher, daily. This is the bare minimum.” My guest today tweeted these words recently. I, a father of 3 children, couldn’t agree more. Dwayne Reed is a teacher in Chicago. While most teachers were preparing their beginning-of-the-school-year letter for their students, Dwayne decided to make a music video, instead. That video has been viewed over 1.5M times. Big brands and collaborated with him since then. Additionally, a few famous people also saw and loved the video. Pharrell even tweeted about it the other day! But Dwayne is more than a viral music video. As displayed in the tweet above, he loves and cares for his students so deeply. And this love and care has changed these kids! This month we're focusing our attention on the Every Child Deserves a Family Act (or ECDF) – a bill that was recently introduced in Congress that would eliminate state laws, policies, practices and procedures that exclude potential adoptive and foster parents because of their marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity. Passing ECDF would dramatically increase access to permanent, loving homes for foster care children. In Part 2 of this two-part series, we talk to guests Kristopher Sharp and James McIntyre, who both aged out of the foster care system without finding forever families or permanent placements. Kristopher and James talk with Senior Policy Counsel Shelbi Day about the challenges they faced growing up in foster care, and how they have continued to become powerful advocates for reform in the child welfare system. The Youth Sentencing & Reentry Project is dedicated to keeping kids out of adult jails and prisons. Did you make any bad decisions when you were ten years old? I know I did. In many states, including Pennsylvania, children as young as ten years old can be treated by the courts as an adult. When children come into the court system, they can be offered a public defender. However, when children are in trouble in a group, and we know that children often get into trouble in a group setting, only one of the children will be given a public defender. The others are appointed a private attorney. These private attorneys can be private practitioners who lack a support team such as paralegals, social workers or case managers. The Youth Sentencing & Reentry Project supports kids who are prosecuted in the adult criminal justice system, including individuals who were sentenced to life without parole as children. They do that by helping lawyers with low-income clients get their cases transferred from the adult criminal justice system to the juvenile justice system. They also help connect youth and juvenile lifers with existing community resources and programs, so they have access to education, healthcare, stable housing and job placement. Social Entrepreneurship Quotes from Lauren Fine “Children as young as 10 years old can be treated as adults in the criminal justice system.” “On any given night in the United States there are 10,000 children in adult jails or prisons.” “In Pennsylvania we have the highest number of individuals who, as children, were sentenced to live without the possibility of parole.” “It’s important to note that race is really relevant in terms of which kids are being treated as if there were adults.” “86% of youth tried as adults are youth of color.” “Youth of color are ten times as likely to be sentenced to life without parole.” “Pick good advisors.” Social Entrepreneurship Resources: Youth Sentencing & Reentry Project (YSRP): https://ysrp.org/ YSRP on Twitter: https://twitter.com/ysrpinphilly YSRP on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PhillyYSRP
