Forty years ago Wednesday, the first issue of a new, biweekly newspaper went out across the Twin Cities. The idea was to share stories “about women, by women and for women,” according to Minnesota Women's Press' current owner and editor, Mikki Morrisette. The publication is now a monthly magazine that is published online and stocked at more than 360 businesses around the state. Morrissette joins MPR News host Nina Moini along with Mollie Hoben, one of the founders of Minnesota Women's Press, to reflect on the magazine's past and future.

Marlene M. Johnson was the Executive Director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators for almost two decades and prior to that was Minnesota's first woman Lieutenant Governor. She is co-founder of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and the Minnesota Women's Campaign Fund. She is now on the advisory board of Kakenya's Dream, a board member of the Washington Office on Latin America, and a trustee of the Alexandria Trust. In 1988, she was awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star by the Kingdom of Sweden. On today's episode I sit down with Sophomore on the Minnesota Women's Hockey team Josefin Bouveng. This season at the time of this recording Josefin has 8 Goals, 17 Assists, for 25 Points. In her hockey Career Josefin was Named to the HCA National Rookie of the Year Watch List, she helped Minnesota to a Frozen Four appearance, she won the 2021 elite prospects award, she recorded the most points in SDHL playoff history in 2021, she competed for Sweden at the 2022 Winter Olympics and also competed for Sweden in three U18 world championships including being named captain in 2019 and winning silver in 2018. The Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Wild are not exactly teams that are easy to cheer for right now. So here is a new team to get behind: the Minnesota Professional Women's Hockey Team or PWHL, whose inaugural season kicks off tonight. (The team does not have a name yet.) Not surprisingly, a number of players on the team are from Minnesota and Lee Stecklien is among them. She played defense for Team USA in 16 games across three Olympics as well as for the Minnesota Gophers. Here she is at practice over the weekend. “I think so many careers over the years have been maybe cut a little short. You never get to see everyone's full potential,” she said at practice over the weekend. “So we have a really skilled and talented group here and I'm excited for us all to keep reaching our new potential together."Minnesota is playing away in Boston tonight, but you can cheer them on at a watch party hosted by the Minneapolis Women's Club and “A Bar of Their Own,” a new women's sports bar that is expected to open later this year. Owner Jillian Hiscock joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer ahead of the event.
