If our guts aren't functioning well, our brains won't be able to function well either. ADHD symptoms can become worse when the gut isn't functioning properly.” ”A few at-home things you can do to improve slow transit time include: drinking more water, eating foods that are rich in fiber, exercising more, and working to improve the diet (eating more whole, nutrient-dense foods and healthy fats and eating less processed foods). Magnesium citrate can also be beneficial.” ”For many children with ADHD, persistent poo and gut problems are caused by leaky gut.” ”Leaky gut is one of the most common underlying stressors that I see in families that I work with. That's because there is a very close connection between the gut and the brain. One of the first signs of a disconnect in the brain is a gut that is not functioning well, that is because of the 2-way communication between the two.” ”Did you know that the gut is also responsible for making 70 - 90% of our serotonin and 50% of our dopamine which are our happy, feel-good neurotransmitters… in our body that helps regulate our emotions?” ”When it comes to supplementation there is no “one size fits all” approach. Supplementation should be tailored to each individual in order to address specific healing opportunities, provide support, and make up for poor food quality.” Dana Kay Resources:

She describes the pivotal moment that changed her perspective on how to treat ADHD that pushed her along a new path for her own life and career and support her son more fully. Changes were made and tests were run and the result of the shifts led to him calming down and focusing better. She feels that there are many things you can do, and the best place to start with treating ADHD is usually diet, which means focusing on whole and nutritious foods.Dana Kay is a board certified Wholistic Health and Nutrition Practitioner based in Seattle, Washington. Dana shares the story of her personal experience with ADHD diagnosis for her son, and the relief she felt when it was diagnosed. Corbin and Dana discuss what ADHD is, how symptoms vary from child to child. She shares her opinions about why the number of children being diagnosed has drastically increased, and some of the potential causes of this. The conversation shifts to the benefits of the ADHD brain, but she cautions that when the brain is too inflamed, these benefits cannot be harnessed. The body is compared to a trash can that collects toxins and when there are too many, they can overwhelm the body's ability to contain them and inflammation and intense symptoms can be the result. How to detoxify is addressed, as well as more on how to improve the diet to fully support your child. She shares the impact these changes made on her son in a matter of weeks. The effects of gluten is also discussed in further detail.Dana also speaks to the role of parenting specific to ADHD, when psychotherapy helps kids and when it doesn't, and even how proper spine alignment can reduce inflammation and reduce symptomsFinally, she confirms her conviction that ADHD is a real diagnosis, and is permanent for some people, but that when inflammation is addressed, the symptoms can be reduced or eliminated.Dana Kay is a board certified Wholistic Health and Nutrition Practitioner based in Seattle, Washington. In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Dana Kay, board certified holistic health and nutrition practitioner, answers these questions and more. Tune in to learn more about what it means for a food to be classified as organic, as well as when it's most important to stick with organic (and when it's okay to buy non-organic). GMOs are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a lab setting.” ”In 1994, the FDA approved the first GMO tomato.” ”Most GMOs fall into one of two categories: herbicide tolerant or pesticide producing.” ”We really don't know how their consumption is going to affect our health long-term. We also don't know how they will affect our planet or our animals. Remember, GMOs are, in essence, manufactured plants. They can't be found in nature anywhere. They are created in labs and then pushed on consumers, many times without our knowledge.” ”In the United States, three federal agencies regulate the use of GMOs: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). These agencies claim GMOs are safe for consumption...but are they really? These organizations are the same ones who refuse to ban ingredients that other countries have banned because of their significant health concerns.” ”A consumer should know what they are eating at all times. They shouldn't have to guess or read between the lines. Labels should be clear one hundred percent of the time.” ”In the United States, the following crops are often genetically modified: corn, soybeans, cotton, sugarbeets, alfalfa, apples, canola, potatoes, eggplant, papaya, pineapple, salmon, squash.” ”Since the early 1990's (when GMOs really hit the market), Americans have grown sicker and sicker.” ”When we consume GMOs, we are participating in the ONLY long-term safety trial EVER conducted in humans.” ”One of the best ways to avoid exposure to toxic pesticides is knowing which foods you need to buy organic.” ”If a food is on the Dirty Dozen List, you NEED to buy organic because these fruits and vegetables have shown to be the most contaminated with harmful pesticides. The foods on the Clean 15, though, don't necessarily need to be organic.” Dana Kay Resources:

That way, you can really implement the change really well and it's not overwhelming on the kids or the family.” ”The start of a new school year brings on that fresh routine, along with a new schedule and that definitely makes it easier to establish those new eating habits.” ”Your best bet is to pack your own lunch and pack those snacks that are gluten and dairy free. That way you know your child has those safe options.” ”You really want to communicate with the staff ahead of time…Take that time to really discuss your family's dietary needs with the teachers, the school administration, anybody in the cafeteria, whoever needs to hear it…The more you communicate openly about what you're doing, the easier it will be.” ”We need to be patient and flexible. It's not going to be perfect.” ”Lunch doesn't always have to be a sandwich.” ”We definitely want a breakfast that is nutrient-dense.” ”Everything you are doing - implementing a low inflammatory lifestyle - is going to help with those focus issues.” ”I've never met anybody who doesn't feel better when they eat better.” ”We have to choose our hard. [42:58] The gut-brain connection [48:45] The 3 worst foods & best foods for ADHD kids to eat [55:41] Additional lifestyle changes that families need to make Memorable Moments: ”ADHD is actually one of the most common mental disorders affecting children. Just in the USA alone, there's over 6 million children that have been diagnosed, and 3/4 of them are receiving treatment of strong medication and/or behavior therapy.” ”ADHD symptoms can be reduced - not just from medications. There are other strategies out there that can help a child thrive without just pounding on different medications and dealing with the side effects.” ”Just the basic day-to-day life without constant ups and downs and tension was all I wanted.” ”Inflammation leads to difficult ADHD symptoms.” ”Our bodies have these pathways called detoxification pathways that clean out that trash - those toxins, those viruses, that bacteria, foreign substances that are really affecting our body, affecting our kid's body.” ”The way that wheat is processed in the USA today is so different to how it was…hundreds of years ago.” ”There are artificial dyes that are banned in Canada, Europe, and Australia but they're allowed here in the food supply of the USA without a second thought.” ”When families make this change - that follow my plan - it's not just the child that starts to thrive. It's the whole family.” ”The importance of diet in ADHD, it isn't just anecdotal. There is a lot of scientific research out there…There is a clear link between certain foods and ADHD symptoms.” Lab testing “is that really valuable tool to look beneath the surface and identify specific challenges with that gut or other areas that may be contributing to ADHD.” ”We as parents hold the key to our child's nervous system until they are 18 years old. So they actually borrow our nervous system to regulate themselves.” Dana Kay Resources:
Why don't traditional ADHD treatments always work? Why does it sometimes feel like no matter what you try - be it medication, supplements, therapy, or various other strategies - that NOTHING actually works long term for your child with ADHD? If you've ever asked either of these questions, then this episode of the Soaring Child podcast is for you. Many times, traditional ADHD treatments don't work long term because they are focusing on symptom management, NOT actually addressing the underlying stressors of ADHD. Tune in to this episode to learn more. Link Mentioned in the Show: ADHD Fast Class - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl Key Takeaways: [2:22] Why medication doesn't always work [5:13] Why supplementation doesn't always work [9:05] Why therapy doesn't always work [9:45] Why parent coaching doesn't always work [12:01] Why dietary changes alone don't always work [17:02] The REAL issue parents need to address in order to effectively reduce ADHD symptoms long term Memorable Moments: ”If you've ever been puzzled by the effectiveness of traditional methods, this is your episode.” ”The biggest misconception about ADHD in kids is that medication is the only way to treat it. The problem with medications is that they merely mask the symptoms, without addressing the underlying stressors of ADHD.” ”Supplements can be effective and healing in the body. But first, parents need to be sure they are supplementing correctly.” “We supplement based on a child's unique needs, and not use a one size fits all approach. Because one size does not fit all.” “Shockingly, many supplements have quality problems.” ”We sacrificed a LOT to try therapy for my son, and it did not help at all. Not even a little bit.” ”Therapy can be effective, but it's not the most impactful way of handling ADHD symptoms for the vast majority of children.” ”While it is valuable to learn effective parenting strategies, and learn to communicate with your child better, those are almost never the reason children experience ADHD symptoms.” ”Diet can definitely make a difference. But, many children with ADHD are picky eaters, and they can act up if they aren't given foods they like.” ”I have never seen a child grow out of ADHD without some kind of changes.” ”The truth is, most ADHD strategies…. often miss the mark in addressing the real issue. Instead, they only address the symptoms.” ”The reason traditional ADHD treatments don't work long term is because they are focusing on symptom management, NOT actually addressing the underlying stressor of the ADHD.” ”The World Health Organization ranks chronic inflammatory diseases as the greatest threat to human health.” Dana Kay Resources:
Summer is full of outdoor activities and memorable adventures. But it's also a time when our children are more exposed to various environmental toxins, like chlorine from swimming pools, chemicals in sunscreens, etc. These toxins can add a significant load to their bodies, exacerbating ADHD symptoms. Their smaller size, higher rates of metabolism, and the fact that they're closer to the ground (where some toxins settle) further increase their risk.” ”Though chlorine isn't ideal, there are things you can do to help your kids detox those chemicals before and after swimming.” ”You can still use sunscreen but choose a cleaner brand and this will go a long way in reducing your child's overall toxic load!” ”It's much easier to limit a child's toxic exposure when they're at home with us under our supervision, but many of our kids will also be going to summer camps so we need to think about this too.“ ”The goal is to support the body's natural detoxification processes, which include the liver, kidneys, digestive system, and skin, in a gentle and supportive way.” ”Remember, small tweaks can make a significant impact.” Dana Kay Resources:

[24:07] How to avoid artificial flavors and colors [25:01] Brands that often avoid artificial flavors and colors Memorable Moments: “For families of kids with ADHD, understanding the potential impact of these artificial ingredients is crucial in managing symptoms and promoting a more balanced and focused state of mind.” ”Artificial colors, also known as food dyes, are chemical substances developed in laboratories. They're used in a wide array of foods to enhance appearance, making them more visually appealing.” ”Artificial flavors, similar to artificial colors, are chemical compounds created in laboratories.” “Unlike natural flavors that are derived from actual food sources, artificial flavors are synthesized to mimic natural tastes. These flavors are engineered to replicate the taste of fruits, nuts, spices, and other natural foods.” “Artificial flavors are often complex mixtures of numerous chemicals.” ”Here are some common terms indicating artificial flavors or colors: Artificial Flavors, Artificial Colors, Synthetic Flavors, Artificial Flavoring Substances, Synthetic Food Coloring.” ”Studies have illuminated a concerning link between artificial additives and ADHD symptoms.” ”In Britain, food is made with real ingredients, while in America, chemicals are often added with no warning label. This needs to change. American consumers deserve the same consideration as those outside the USA.” ”When chemicals are added to food, we should be informed. It's baffling that the United States continues to allow ingredients that are not even food, contributing to staggering health issues.” ”Artificial flavors and colors are everywhere. Even a lot of things that are clear or white in color have dyes or flavors in them.” ”My best tip is to eat fewer processed foods as these additives are always in processed foods and to read those labels.” “My rule of thumb is, if you can't pronounce an item, put that item back on the shelf. It is used in over 300 biochemical processes in the body.” ”Magnesium is a really great supplement with a lot of great benefits! The problem comes in when magnesium is NOT what your child's body needs.” ”No one supplement is going to be the game changer.” “There is no ‘one size fits all' approach to ADHD symptoms.“ ”It is true that supplements can play a very important role in nutrition and healing, but sadly no single supplement is going to solve all of your problems.” ”I always trongly recommend before considering supplementation that you address diet first or specific functional lab testing to identify underlying malfunctions and stressors.” ”Using magnesium is not as simple as just running to your local pharmacy and picking up any bottle. It's how they come together for that overall picture in that child's body.” ”Oxidative stress can exacerbate symptoms by affecting neurotransmitter regulation and neural development.” ”An efficient detox system can help manage ADHD symptoms more effectively.” ”The more you know about your genetic makeup, the better equipped you'll be to navigate the complexities of ADHD.” ”Water is essential for every cellular process in your body, including detoxification.” ”One of the most straightforward ways to help your child detox is to ensure they're having regular bowel movements.” ”[Infrared] Saunas are the finest single additional modality for toxic metal elimination and detoxification.” ”Milk thistle is another natural detoxifier that supports liver, kidney, and gallbladder function.” ”Essential oils can also be a powerful tool for detoxification.” ”The skin is our largest organ and plays a vital role in detoxification.” Dana Kay Resources: Website: https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/adhd-thrive-institute/mycompany/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.ph/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/ Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl ADHD Parenting Course – https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/
This is part two of our three part series where we explore the intricate ways genetics intersect with ADHD. In our previous episode, we discussed how genetics influence ADHD, laying the foundation for today's discussion. If you missed last week, make sure and go back and listen to that episode, because it lays the foundation for today's. If you have ever wondered about MTHFR or other genes that affect ADHD and ASD, tune in to today's episode to learn more. MTHFR is often regarded as the poster child of ADHD and autism, but there are many other genes that also play a role. Here is the chart mentioned in the episode: 677CC 2 normal 677CT One variant 677TT Two variants 1298AA 2 normal 100% 66% 25% 1298AC One variant 83% 48% 1298CC Two variants 61% Learn more about my favorite DNA test here - https://shop.adhdthriveinstitute.com/the-dna-company-360-report.html Key Takeaways: [2:45] What is Methylation? [4:15] Examples of What Methylation Does In the Body [6:23] Genes that Affect Methylation [6:55] MTHFR [13:20] SHMT1 [16:46] MTRR [18:29] MTR [20:48] FUT2 Memorable Moments: “It's not just about one gene mutation. It's about looking at the overall picture.” ”If you have a MTHFR genetic mutation, it impairs the body's ability to break down that folic acid, which may lead to a buildup of folic acid in the body. Excess folic acid can contribute to a range of health issues, including cognitive decline, mood and behavioral disorders, and potentially even increase the growth rate of cancer cells.” “So the take away that you need to write down right now is - If you have a mutation in the MTHFR, you should not eat packaged goods that are fortified with synthetic folic acid.” ”Most people look at MTHFR in isolation and you really need to look at the methylation as a whole if you want to get a better picture of how the body is functioning. There are also other genes that play a massive role in methylation.” ”So the takeaway here is - If you have have a SHMT1 mutation, using Folinic acid instead of Methyl-folate is the better way to go.” “Understanding these genes can really help you tailor your approach to managing ADHD. It's like having a personalized roadmap to help you navigate through the ups and downs of ADHD.” “The more you know about your or your child's genes, the better choices you can make.” Dana Kay Resources: Website: https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/adhd-thrive-institute/mycompany/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.ph/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/ Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl ADHD Parenting Course – https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/
This episode is Part One of a three part series about genetics and ADHD. Understanding the genetic underpinnings of ADHD can provide answers to many common questions and empower parents with actionable insights and strategies. Remember, knowledge isn't just power; it's also empowerment. In this episode, discover how genes can predispose someone to ADHD, the role of hereditary, and what this means for families like yours. ADHD might be influenced by our genetics, but it doesn't define who our children are or who we are as parents. If you've ever wondered about the genetic puzzle and how it affects ADHD, tune in to this solo episode with Dana Kay, board certified holistic health and nutrition practitioner, who specializes in helping families of children with ADHD learn how to reduce ADHD symptoms naturally. Key Takeaways: [4:00] Overview of How Genes Work [5:25] Why Most Genetic Tests Fall Short [7:43] One Misconception about Genetic Testing [12:30] How Genes Affect Common Symptoms of ADHD [16:00] How Genetic Testing Can Help Us Understand Key Functions of the Body (like sleep, mood and behavior, diet, etc.) Memorable Moments: ”ADHD might be influenced by genetics, but it doesn't define who our children are.” ”Most genetic reports are more confusing than enlightening.” ”Your personal genetic data often gets shared and sold to pharmaceutical companies for drug development.” ”One of the biggest misconceptions about genetic reports is that they put too much emphasis on individual genes. It's like trying to understand a movie by watching just one scene. You miss the bigger picture, the overarching narrative.” ”A single gene or even a gene mutation isn't necessarily a problem in itself. It's how that gene interacts within a complex system of other genes that truly matters.” ”When we're talking about ADHD tendencies, we don't just look at one or two genes. We focus on a quartet of them—COMT, DRD2, MAO, and 5 HTTLPR—and how they interact with each other. It's this interaction that can provide us with actionable insights.” ”Even if you or your child do carry the genetic profile commonly associated with ADHD, it's often just one piece of the puzzle. There are likely other underlying factors—be it diet, environment, or stress—that contribute to the symptoms. And those are the areas we can target to help your child thrive naturally.” ”The beauty of genetic testing isn't confined to just understanding ADHD. It's like having a treasure map to your body's inner workings.” ”Your DNA is not your destiny. It's a blueprint, yes, but how that blueprint comes to life depends on how you live—your lifestyle choices, your diet, and your environment.” ”Your genetics load the gun, but your lifestyle pulls the trigger.” Dana Kay Resources: Website: https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/adhd-thrive-institute/mycompany/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.ph/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/ Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl ADHD Parenting Course – https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/

Something is CAUSING the food sensitivities.” ”Food sensitivities are not true allergies but they do cause inflammation in the body and so you can actually heal from sensitivities.” ”Getting people better is better than prescribing a pill.” Dana Kay Resources: Website: https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/adhd-thrive-institute/mycompany/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.ph/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/ Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl ADHD Parenting Course – https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/

[23:50] How Leaky Gut Shows Up In the Body [25:42] How to Correct Leaky Gut Memorable Moments: ”All of our children's health is quite literally connected to everything that occurs in the gut.” ”80% of the entire body's immune system is located within the gut, so gut health is super critical.” “What the gut-brain connection means is that, in essence, our brains are deeply connected to our guts. If our guts aren't functioning well, our brains won't be able to function well either.” ”95% of the body's serotonin and 50% of the body's dopamine is produced in the gut.” ”The gut and brain are constantly sending messages back and forth.” ”Let's stop shooting water at smoke and start getting to the underlying issues!” “Compromised gut = compromised brain.” ”When leaky gut is present when we eat food (even the healthiest food), before the gut has had a chance to break it down, it can go through the holes in the gut in that leaky gut into our bloodstream.” ”Something started the leaky gut, then the leaky gut causes food intolerances and the food intolerances continue to cause leaky gut. So in order to heal the gut, you must remove these foods or they will continue to break down the lining of the gut and you won't be successful.” ”If you ever do a food intolerance test, you need to make sure that you test the gut as well. You want to see if there's leaky gut.” ”One of the main reasons I recommend everyone stop consuming gluten is because it triggers increased intestinal permeability in EVERYONE, even those who don't show an allergic response to it. And when a person has increased intestinal permeability, that can lead to leaky gut.” “Leaky gut shows its ugly head in about 80-90% of the tests that I run on children with ADHD.” “Leaky gut affects the whole body.” ”The gut is connected to everything.” ”Leaky gut isn't a death sentence. It's not permanent. It can be corrected, and it can be done without medication, through dietary and lifestyle modifications and supplementation.” ”Diet is the foundation of any plan.” ”Rome wasn't built in a day.” Dana Kay Resources: Website: https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ADHDThriveInstitute/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adhdthriveinstitute/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/ADHDThriveInstitute LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/adhd-thrive-institute/mycompany/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.ph/adhdthriveinstitute/ Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@adhd_thriveinstitute International Best Selling Book, Thriving with ADHD – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/book/ Free Reduce ADHD Symptoms Naturally Masterclass - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl ADHD Parenting Course – https://info.adhdthriveinstitute.com/parentingadhd ADHD Thrive Method 4 Kids Program – https://adhdthriveinstitute.com/packages/
