In this heartfelt and adventurous episode, Jed welcomes Jessica Collins and Lisa Malamed to celebrate their upcoming picture book Where's Big Dog: A Story of Loss and Love. Inspired by Jessica's beloved golden doodle Lucy, the book gently helps children and adults navigate the loss of a pet. Jessica and Lisa share sweet, funny memories of Lucy—like how she'd jingle her collar instead of barking to wake Lisa up—and talk about how deeply pets become part of the family. They explain that the dogs in the book aren't named or gendered so any reader can see their own pet in the story. Though it began as a way to help Jessica's young daughter process her first big loss, the book has resonated just as strongly with adults and is designed to work almost like a sympathy card for pet grief. Above all, it lands not on sadness, but on love. Later, Jed is joined by Ellen Cochran, author of the riveting middle grade narrative nonfiction Follow the Water: The Unbelievable True Story of a Teenager's Survival in the Amazon. Ellen tells the astonishing real-life story of Juliane Koepcke, who survived a plane crash, fell two miles strapped to her seat, and then trekked alone for 11 days through the Amazon using the survival knowledge taught by her scientist parents. Ellen weaves Juliane's story with rich details about Amazon wildlife and science, aiming to fire up kids' curiosity about STEM, nature, and what real scientific thinking looks like in action.

This week we welcome Fernando Carsa, beloved star from Apple TV's hit series Acapulco and we quickly dive into his background and rise to fame revealing intriguing details about his life and career and he shares his origins, growing up in Colima, Mexico, and confesses he's never actually visited Acapulco, the backdrop of his popular show. He paints a vivid picture of Colima, especially the coastal areas, and proudly mentions buying his childhood home, a dream come true that underscores his deep family values. The discussion transitions to Fernando's ambitious dream of opening a performing arts academy rooted in his love for the arts, nurtured since childhood. We chat about his family's immigration journey to the U.S., uncovering the struggles they faced under stringent laws and the emotional rollercoaster of moving from Mexico. Fernando candidly shares his personal challenges of adapting to a new culture and the hurdles of passing the U.S. Citizenship test and how he learned the English language from Britney Spears songs. Fernando reveals the pivotal moment when he decided to pursue acting professionally, starting his acting journey at the tender age of three that culminated in earning a degree in Musical Theatre and he recounts his journey from a student to a television star, spotlighting his role in Acapulco as his first significant gig post-graduation, despite the rigorous audition process, highlighting how his unique qualities landed him the role of the character which was the hardest to cast. He shares amusing anecdotes, such as his wardrobe mishaps and the challenge of shooting scenes out of order and his impressive ability to remember lines in both English and Spanish, and they delve into the logistics of filming “Acapulco,” including the tight 10-week shooting schedule. Fernando describes the camaraderie among the cast and crew, and how his hotel suite has become the social hub due to his stash of snacks, good music, and movies. We end part one with the first half of Fernando's Armenian Coffee Cup Grounds reading and Pol' reveals surprisingly accurate insights into his personal life leaving him visibly astonished as Pol predicts upcoming trips and a significant contract on the horizon, which Fernando confirms. Pol's readings also touch on Fernando's efforts to set personal boundaries and navigate complex relationships, further impressing Patrik and adding a mystical charm to the episode. Throughout the episode, Fernando opens about the behind-the-scenes dynamics of “Acapulco,” his aspirations, and the personal challenges he has faced. His candidness and charisma make for an engaging and heartwarming conversation, leaving listeners with a deeper understanding of the actor and his journey from Colima to Hollywood. We talk about Jessica...no not our lovely comedian guest star Jessica Collins (we wait for her to leave before talking about her), but Jessica Stanley, Bella's frenemy in "Twilight"/"Midnight Sun". Edward is annoyed that she finds him hot, even though literally every other girl feels the same way. Edward continues to broil in his hanger as Bella's stank torments him further; he even pulverizes a chair over it. Also, the guests compare the Cullens to the hit TV show, "Jersey Shore"
This season's book is "Midnight Sun", a "Twilight" spin-off written by the main lady herself; Stephanie Meyer!! "Midnight Sun" is "Twilight" from Edward's perspective, and somehow SM managed to make this version even more creepy and cringe than her original book! Our guests for this season are the lovely and hilarious Irish comedians, Sinead Walsh and Jessica Collins. We're hopping in Uncle Jakob's cannon car and picking up Jessica Collins, a.k.a. Montez, to talk about Fast X! Montez somehow managed to go into this movie almost completely unspoiled, and she joins the show to share her favorite and least favorite moments and where she thinks we head next. We get our final Montez Minute until Hobbs comes out and admire Fast X's version of her titular segment. Joe pitches a new name for the sequel to Fast X. Montez explains how she thinks bombs and fire work as well as what she thinks "friends with benefits" means. We wonder: how long is four minutes? Can we turn F&F into horror movies? What about a musical? If Keanu Reeves had played the Aimes role, would we question that he's the "big bad"? What will we get in Hobbs, and will it actually come out next summer? We also continue our discussion about F&F being literate with the help of a Reddit theory and then open a bunch more packs of AMC cards. We're closing out our Vin Diesel lap and welcoming in Lap 13 in our mechanic-prescribed Lap 12 Tune-Up / Relap / Recap. Jessica Collins (a.k.a. Montez) is here for the full episode for her Lap 12 swan song. With nothing to recap, is there reason for the Montez Minute? Regardless, she goes full South, reflects on the franchise, and takes the character quiz (again? or for the first time?). We all share our rankings (featuring a fun new twist), then discuss two early Vin Diesel appearances you can find on YouTube: Breakin' in the USA (starting at 28:40) and Multi-Facial (starting at 37:15). We discuss Dom's lack of breakdancing and rapping in the Fastiverse, explore Vin Diesel's Wiki, and dive deep into Vin's writing/directing debut to wonder: could he have been destined for greater things? We also talk about Viewmasters, “classy” beer, and an idea for a future lap. Plus! We talk about the second trailer for Fast X (starting at 58:20) as some of the plot points and connections seem to start falling into place. We announce next lap's theme. Email us: family@cageclub.me Visit our Patreon page at patreon.com/2fast2forever. Show your support at the 2 Fast 2 Forever shop! Extra special shout-out to Ben Milliman, Alex Elonen, Nick Burris, Brian Rodriguez (High School Slumber Party), Justin Kleinman, Michael McGahon, Lane Middleton, Jason Rainey, Wes Hampton, Mike Gallier, Josh Buckley (Whole Lotta Wolves), and Michael Moser for joining at the “Interpol's Most Wanted” level or above! Intro music by Nico Vasilo. Interlude and outro music by Wes Hampton.
As we near the end of the Vin Diesel lap, it's time (once again) to talk about the Dominic Toretto-free Hobbs & Shaw. Jessica Collins (aka Montez) once again struggles through her titular segment, losing steam in the same spot as usual. We then wonder: is Hobbs & Shaw the least Dom movie? Do Dom's actions in F9 up-end what we select as the "most Dom moment"? Did Vin Diesel have any say in the making of this film? Joey makes a bold proclamation (and a plea), Montez shares her issues with the movie, and Joe argues that The Shape of Water has more cultural relevance (or at least understanding/recognition) than Game of Thrones. We talk about the logistics of adding Hattie to Fast X and Eiza Gonzalez's character name. We have a revelation about Jason Momoa. Montez looks ahead to F9. At the start of this lap, we switched up the format of 2 Fast 2 Forever to prevent overlong episodes, but sometimes you accidentally summon double "chaos energy" (in the form of Jessica Collins, a.k.a. Montez, and Brian "Late Night" Rodriguez) and you wind up with a two-hour episode about Furious 7. After kicking off the episode with another dreadful installment of the Montez Minute, Jess answers some of our all-time great "either/or" questions before Brian reads us some website's warning to (Christian?) parents about Furious 7. We make our picks for the "most Dom moment" (including the most ludicrous one yet, coming from Montez -- who watched this movie three times and remembers four total scenes) and then talk about the literature preferences of Vin Diesel, Dom Toretto, and Mark Sinclair. We compare Justin Lin's camera work and directorial style to James Wan's, seek answers to age-old questions from Midjourney, and wonder if Furious 7 ever did, in fact, win Best Picture. We also wonder... is Dom a fun uncle (aka "funcle")? Does he play video games? When did he give up his "skanks"? Summer may be over but it's time to head back to Las Colinas resort as the cast of Acapulco tease some of the new storylines, relationships and changes in the second season of the beloved Apple TV+ comedy series. Paired together are Enrique Arrizon and Fernando Carsa as best friends Maximo and Memo; Chord Overstreet and Camila Perez as the newly engaged Chad and Julia; and Jessica Collins and Rafael Cebrián as two of the show's biggest personalities, resort owner Diane and head poolboy Hector. “It's a new year and a new Maximo and he wants to succeed but things don't always go the way he wants,” Arrizon shared. “There is a lot of growth in all of the characters so people are going to relate to us more.” “There's a lot of healing,” Carsa added. “It's definitely a loaded season with more drama, but with all the drama, comes a lot of healing. A good laugh, a good cry and leaving every episode with a heart full of love and hope.” When talking about the differences between seasons one and two, Overstreet had this to say. “You don't really know what to expect. You haven't seen anything yet, you don't know the tone, but with season two you hit the ground running. You know the characters, you know the world. It's like with pre-season football. You can go in full speed.” Speaking on the family dynamic both on and off-screen, Collins revealed that the cast and crew stay and live on the resort where they film during the three months they film each season. “We work together, we eat together, we see each other at the gym, we can't get away from each other!” she laughed. “We really are a family for those three months. There's no acting. We are a family at this point.” “This is my first comedy,” Cebrian shared. So trusting myself and disregarding my insecurities, and trusting my peers, the fact that we are all so close makes that easier. I know who they are, I know they've got my back and that makes my job as an actor easy.” Season two of Acapulco premieres October 21st on Apple TV+
Jessica Collins (a.k.a. Mon-TEZ) returns to the podcast for 2 Fast 2 Furious, and she is coming in HOT with talk of hate-watching. After taking care of some quick housekeeping, we dive into 2 Fast 2 Furious, which Joe is liking more than ever. Montez tells tall tales about enormous slices of pizza served by fake Italians, we make our picks for the "most Dom moment," and we discover the specific way Montez takes notes for these movies. We talk about Brian's (or Roman's?) atonement, the animated movie math equation Montez uses to describe this movie, and her hot take about the amount of plot in 2 Fast 2 Furious. We discuss the first instance of the franchise rewriting its history. Joey unveils a revelation. We talk about abandoned Fast/Furious franchises. Joe forgets that we do something we've done 150 times. Email us: family@cageclub.me Visit our Patreon page at patreon.com/2fast2forever. Show your support at the 2 Fast 2 Forever shop! We're kicking off Lap 12 (and working our way through our new format) as we head back to Toretto's Market and Cafe for The Fast and the Furious! Joining us tonight (as she will all lap long) is Jessica Collins (a.k.a Mon-TEZ), who brings the heat right off the bat by comparing Brian to Lightning McQueen. We make our picks for the "most Dom moment" of the movie (including one not in the movie... see if you can tell who made that pick!) and listen to (without spoiling) Montez's rhetorical questions. We also (in broad strokes) look ahead to compare where we started to where we're going, explore the Mia/Dom relationship, and return to a fan-favorite game. What do Montez's kids think of the movie? Is Brian's work as an undercover cop effective? Can Vince read? Listen to find out! Email us: family@cageclub.me Visit our Patreon page at patreon.com/2fast2forever. We're closing out our heist lap and welcoming in Lap 12 in our mechanic-prescribed Lap 11 Tune-Up / Relap / Recap. Coming at you LIVE from The Racer's Edge, Joe takes blame for the Queen's passing as we work our way through an NFL Week 1 roundup before we head into the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (25:00) with entirely too much to cover (as well as a tip from Rachel's mom on finding good restaurants). We then begin the Lap 11 Tune-Up (43:35) and look back at the heist lap that was, unveil our heist teams (48:20), and reveal the theme (and patron picks so far) for Lap 12. Then, after a near-unprecedented second break, Jessica Collins (a.k.a. Mon-TEZ) joins us to talk about her upcoming ride along in Lap 12 (1:23:15). We ask Montez about her history with these movies, reflect back onto the smutty Helen Mirren movie she watched with us (behind the paywall!), and have her take the 2F2F character quiz. The Pacific region is tipped to feature heavily in the Prime Minister's foreign policy speech in Australia at the Lowy Institute this week. The think-tank is where former Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced his 'Pacific reset' in 2018; promising more aid and a back-to-basics diplomacy approach. Lowy Institute's Pacific Islands Program research fellow Dr Jessica Collins spoke to Susie Ferguson.
This is a special Women in Politics series for the Australia-PNG Network, in which the Lowy Institute's Jessica Collins sits down with prominent women from Papua New Guinea (PNG) to discuss the deep-seated challenge of women's political representation in PNG. In this fifth and final episode of the series, Jessica speaks with Dame Carol Kidu, about the discrimination and disadvantage experienced by indigenous Papua New Guinean women as they seek to get elected. Carol is one of seven women who served in PNG's National Parliament. She also managed to get re-elected twice, despite half of all politicians losing their seat at every election. Carol's tenure as a politician is remarkable, but she said her husband's legacy and her European background helped secure ongoing community support. She often heard from her community, “We don't mind you being here, but we don't want our own women here [in parliament].” Carol talks us through the issues that are increasingly disadvantaging women during campaigns, such as bloc voting and tribal intimidation, campaign or cell houses, violence, and financial barriers. But she offers a silver lining: “PNG is a nation based on relationships, and if you can nurture relationships, that will get you into politics.” Join Jessica and Carol as they talk through why women getting elected is critical to PNG's development, and as she shares her views on what women need to do to get over the line at the upcoming election. Jessica Collins is a Research Fellow in the Pacific Islands Program and Aus-PNG Network at the Lowy Institute. Prior to joining the Institute, Jessica completed a PhD in Anthropology at the Queensland University of Technology. Jessica also holds a Master of Global Development from Griffith University. Her Honours research project, completed at the Queensland University of Technology, explored diasporic life for Samoans living in Brisbane, and her undergraduate studies at the University of Sydney focused on the anthropology of the Pacific. Dame Carol Kidu served in Papua New Guinea's National Parliament for three terms (1997-2012). Between 2002 and 2012, Dame Carol was the only female in Parliament. She served as Minister for Community Development, and as Opposition Leader for her last five months in office. Dame Carol is now supporting other women to get elected to its all-men parliament.
This is a special Women in Politics series for the Australia–PNG Network in which the Lowy Institute's Jessica Collins sits down with prominent women from Papua New Guinea (PNG) to discuss the deep-seated challenge of women's political representation in PNG. In this fourth episode of the series, Jessica speaks with Tania Bale, an urban candidate seeking election to PNG's National Parliament. Tania shares her views on the challenges of standing for election, including the difficulties of campaigning in rural settings and how “obscene” amounts of money is spent in cash handouts to gain voters' support. Tania is one of the few women endorsed by a political party and says her endorsement for a national capital district (NCD) seat, along with three other female party colleagues endorsed for the remaining NCD seats, is unprecedented and historic. Tania's view is that the endorsements will resonate for years to come and that they send a powerful message to the citizenry of PNG. Yet regardless of endorsements, Tania believes her electorate is ready to elect women to the currently all-male parliament — a silver lining for women who are trying to represent their communities. Join Jessica and Tania as they talk through the challenges of getting elected, including Australia's role in supporting “home grown” programs that reflect PNG's unique characteristics. Jessica Collins is a Research Fellow in the Pacific Islands Program and Aus–PNG Network at the Lowy Institute. Tania Bale is a prominent television presenter, journalist and a fervent advocate for social justice, equity, equality and the empowerment of women and youth in Papua New Guinea. She is a vocal champion for the arts, music, culture and the environment. She is also an urban candidate in the upcoming PNG national election.
This is a special Women in Politics series for the Australia-PNG Network, in which the Lowy Institute's Jessica Collins sits down with prominent women from Papua New Guinea (PNG) to discuss the deep-seated challenge of women's political representation in the country. In this third episode, Jessica speaks with Damarise Bonga, a female candidate in the upcoming 2022 national election. Damarise shares her experience of running unsuccessfully in a prior election, and talks about the broader challenges for women trying to represent their communities in parliament. She says a fundamental issue lies in how people (both men and women) perceive leadership in PNG, and how this continues to be a significant barrier to balanced representation in the country. “In politics, in PNG it's quite different … They think that the Parliament is … hausman in Tok Pisin, meaning that it's a house for man. And that's kind of bias, you know.” Join Jessica and Damarise as they talk about how women can be more successful in future elections, including Damarise's views on all-women political parties and decentralising women's political leadership development programs. Damarise Bonga is planning to contest Papua New Guinea's upcoming national election. Damarise recently graduated from Papua New Guinea's Political Leadership Academy for Women in Port Moresby as one of many students in its first cohort. She also served as the appointed women's representative to the Oro Provincial Assembly and supported the PNG Special Parliamentary Committee on their public sector reform and service delivery programs. Jessica Collins is a Research Fellow in the Pacific Islands Program and Aus-PNG Network at the Lowy Institute. Her research interests cover foreign aid and development policy in Pacific Island nations (particularly for Pacific women), Pacific migration, remittance policy, and Myanmar's humanitarian and refugee challenges. In this special Women in Politics series for the Australia-PNG Network, the Lowy Institute's Jessica Collins sits down with prominent women from Papua New Guinea to discuss the deep-seated challenge of women's political representation in Papua New Guinea in the lead-up to its national election. In this second episode of the series, Jessica speaks with Vagi Hemetsberger, co-founder of the Seven Sisters Foundation, which aims to provide long-term support to women seeking office in Papua New Guinea. They discuss what help Papua New Guinean women need to get elected, and how issues such as money politics and security put them at a significant disadvantage. Vagi argues that partnering is vital if women are to improve their political representation in Papua New Guinea. “We want our men and women to … be a part of the solution”, but, she adds, women's civil groups and policymakers also need to work strategically and collaboratively, “because we're stronger together”. Join Jessica and Vagi as they take you through these issues and present ideas on how to change the nature of women's political representation in Papua New Guinea. In this special Women in Politics series for the Australia-PNG Network, the Lowy Institute's Jessica Collins and women from Papua New Guinea discuss the deep-seated challenge of women's political representation in Papua New Guinea in the lead-up to its national election. In this first episode, Jessica speaks with Theresa Meki – an expert in Papua New Guinean women's political representation – about the experience for women trying to enter politics in the country, where no women are currently serving in the national parliament. They discuss the realities and challenges of campaigning, including how vote-buying and clientelism, traditional obligations, reciprocity, patriarchalism and legacy candidates contribute to the uneven playing field for female candidates. Theresa tells Jessica there have been years wasted in between elections to work on the problem. “We only talk about women when it's election time … And I think that's the issue. There was a whole five years that more things could have been done.” Join Jessica and Theresa as they take you through these issues and present ideas on how to change the nature of women's political representation in Papua New Guinea. Theresa Meki is a PhD Candidate with the Department of Pacific Affairs, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at the Australian National University. Her research focuses on women's presence and vote share in Papua New Guinea's election history. Prior to commencing her candidature, Theresa worked as a field producer and research assistant for the DFAT funded Pawa Meri film project, a partnership between the Victoria University, Melbourne and the University of Goroka in Papua New Guinea.
