Working For A Dream

There are things in life we are not built for, but we do them anyway.  It could come from a place of restlessness, circumstances, or even a higher calling.  At the end of the day, there is a quick way to get to the place you're intended to be.  It comes through the process of running......physically, mentally, and emotionally.   Brent Knott is a serial entrepreneur and is the owner of 3 brick and mortar locations that wrap vehicles, as well as a digital marketing agency.  He's highly focused on building a culture that has allowed him to empower his employees, managers, and executives, which allowed him to do a deep dive into living his best life.  Today, Patrick and Brent have a highly connected conversation about what it means to really build a powerful culture inside of a business.  It has allowed him to remove himself from the day-to-day operations of his business, and allow others to thrive. They talk about running and the direct correlation it has to life and business, how to handle difficult situations at work, and how to find the inspiration to keep moving forward.    What You'll Learn:    Why Brent lives in Mexico and why he decided to run a 100-mile marathon How long it takes to complete a 50-mile and 100-mile race What item Brent spent $400 on for his race  The benefits of running starting with your mind What "controllables" are in business and how to identify the opportunities in the unexpected How Patrick handles people lying to him  Some of the things Brent has had to do when being pulled over by police in Mexico Why corruption continues to hold countries like Mexico down Brent's favorite type of taco One of Patrick's favorite authentic Mexican restaurants in Houston The results Patrick got on IG from making one post about a controversial observation Self-validation that keeps most business owners stuck as technicians  The power of mentorship and a powerful lesson  Brent learned from his Why it's important to do P & Ls every single day  How Brent only works 6 hours a week and how he spends the rest of his time A revenue model that keeps his staff motivated and helps with employee retention How being transparent has allowed him to retain good people    Favorite Quote:   "I'm not built like a runner and I can go run a hundred miles and build my identity around it.  It's a metaphor for business and life.  Since starting, with that, I use the same process in everything."  -Brent Knott   Connect with Brent:  Instagram   How To Get Involved: Patrick Bolanos is a serial entrepreneur, business owner, and CEO of Trailer King Builders in Houston, Texas. He was raised in Nicaragua, exposed to extreme poverty, and also had the fortune of being exposed to life in the United States traveling back and forth to both countries.  After college, Patrick's career took him into the corporate world of banking where he learned the important lessons of understanding what you're selling and why it's important to believe in it.  Back in December of 2017, Patrick was fired from his job as a CFO for a Restaurant Group.  With only $500 to his name, rent due, his wife, 3 children at home, and one on the way, he was forced to figure out how to pull his family out of this financial abyss that was strangling his life.

EP 109- Erick Sanchez: Flat Broke to 6 Figures in 3 Years

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 11, 2023 44:49

In 2018, Erick Sanchez had less than $500 to his name — and decided to sink $200 of that into a ticket to a Mastermind entrepreneurial event. “My financials were not really at their best,” he says. “But I made the decision that I was going to change my life. And I wanted to surround myself with people that are up there and to elevate my life, my mind, and energy.”   Three years later, and Erick, at the age of 27, is a six-figure earner and the owner of the solar energy business. He's “in the process right now,” he adds, of becoming a multi-millionaire: “I know that by the age of 30 if God allows me, I'll be a multi-millionaire multiple times.”  Jumping from flat broke to successful CEO in such a short window may seem unlikely, but it isn't Erick's first time overcoming significant adversity. At the age of 15, he was brought to the U.S. by his mother from their native El Salvador to help him escape a life that was headed in the wrong direction, fast.   “My life at the time was completely lost,” he says. “I was lost in the streets, doing things I wasn't supposed to be doing. That's when my mom decided to bring me to the United States because she was afraid I would get killed.” Making the journey by bus and foot — the latter portion of which involved being chased by helicopters — Erick entered the U.S. without documentation and understanding English. Since then, he's been manifesting one dream after the other, from obtaining a driver's license and a green card to owning his own company. But it hasn't happened without hurdles.   In this episode of the Working For a Dream Podcast, Patrick and Erick talk about the choice to change your fortune and how he's now helping others do the same.   What You'll Learn: Why being a little selfish can help foster selflessness, and why Erick believes in filling your own cup first How Erick taught himself financial literacy and learned to set boundaries that helped him grow his net income (and not just spend it) How he's turned himself into an opportunity for others outside the U.S. who are growing up similarly to the way he did And much more!   Favorite Quote:   “I'm a firm believer in the Five Year Rule. You can't escape the pain.  It's a consequence of life.  You can try and numb yourself, but it's not sustainable for the long term.  Wherever you go, there you are.  Everything about you gets carried with you until you decide to unpack the hurt, pain, and trauma. It's necessary in order to grow.  The big mistake most people make is continuing to carry their traumas with them into the next part of their lives, friendships, or even a new relationship.  Stephanie Castro is the Owner of At Home Pet Sitting and we have the pleasure of her sharing the journey she's taken to process the traumas and disappointments of life. In this episode, Stephanie and Jeff share their experiences with marriage and the disappointment of divorce after investing much of their time believing they were living the happily-ever-after.  Stephanie recalls talking to a friend when she was crushed who had invited her to Landmark Forum, a very popular group focused on self-development.  Jeff and Stephanie talk about the spiritual sides of belief, watching signs from the universe, and having blind faith when it comes to taking unprompted action.  Stephanie talks about her journey into an intense self-development program with Landmark and described it as the equivalent of opening the refrigerator door, opening it, and seeing the Grand Canyon.  Stephanie shares how she was at rock bottom when she made a blind decision to take a chance and invest some time in herself at the end of her marriage. In front of hundreds of people on Zoom, she shares her absolute disappointment at the ending of her marriage with a room of perfect strangers.  (Just a little-known fact about Stephanie: She is not a huge fan of public speaking).  This episode is riddled with takeaways for anyone going through a rough patch in life.  Lean in and prepare for a very intimate discussion about the core of life.......the heart.    What You'll Learn:  Hitting rock bottom can be a necessary step to opening oneself up to self-improvement. Vulnerability and growth can be powerful tools to become “awake” and gain a new appreciation for life. Sharing one's story can help in the healing process.   Favorite Quote "I'm on this journey. He notes that this work has broadened his perspective and allowed him to see the deeper levels that some people go to achieve high-quality sound in the competition scene. Todd believes that it's important to get people excited about audio again, and one way to do that is by demonstrating the value of different audio systems. He emphasizes the need to avoid shopping within one's own pocketbook and to focus on demonstrating value instead. Todd also challenges stereotypes by noting that some of his best students have been females, who are sometimes underestimated in the field. Tomas Keenan, author of Unf*ck Your Business, host of the Step It Up Entrepreneur podcast, and head coach at Step It Up Academy, is back on to share what he's been up to since his first appearance. If you'd like to hear more of Tomas's backstory, make sure to check out his last interview on Underdog Empowerment HERE. It's been almost 2 years since Tomas has been on the show, and in just the last year so much has happened. There was some good, some bad, and some ugly, but Tomas was able to find the silver lining in most of it.   In September of 2020 Tomas had moved to Dallas, TX to start Step It Up Academy. Just 30 days in, he was recruited to work at a local coaching mastermind in operations. He ended up doing this for two years, all the while paying $800/ month on software licenses for his coaching business that he had yet to launch. Almost canceling a couple times, Tomas is glad he didn't because in July of this year he left the company he had been working for. With everything still in place for Step It Up Academy, Tomas was able to hit the ground running.   In the midst of all of that, Tomas found himself in Dallas in December of 2021 to give a speech at a Mobile Electronics Association event. The whole family was in attendance as Tomas likes to show his kids what he does for a living. The morning after a successful event, Tomas rolled over to spoon his wife and noticed a lump in her breast. He encouraged her to get it checked out and they went on their way. In February of 2022, Tomas is speaking at the same event, this time in Vegas, when he gets a text from his wife that they need to talk. Not speaking to him the way she usually does, Tomas immediately knew something was wrong. When they spoke, Tomas's wife told him that she had been diagnosed with two types of breast cancer. By May she had a double mastectomy, and by June she was starting chemo for prevention.   Launching a new business in the middle of all of that wasn't what Tomas had envisioned, but he's found his family is right where they need to be. As his wife finishes up radiation and starts on her recovery, Tomas is more focused than ever on his family. He's found that kids don't actually need a lot of time from you, they just need quality time. For all the parents that they need to take the kids to Disneyland to make an impression, Tomas suggests just being present in the everyday moments. Curling up together to watch a show, or throwing the football for 15 minutes, can make all the difference in a kids day.    He has that time to spend with his family because he's very intentional and strict with his routine. He's also freed up a lot of his attention by not having to be in control of everything when it comes to business. He's gotten very good at eliminating, automating, and delegating. If it really doesn't serve a purpose and is just busy work, eliminate it. If it's something you could do well once and then automate, by all means do that. If it's something someone else can do, give up the reins. If that last one scares you, try the do it, document it, delegate it model. Do it yourself, exactly how you want it done, document that process, and then delegate it to someone that can follow directions.   If you've enjoyed listening to Tomas and would like to hear more of what he has to say, check him out at the Alpha Dog Pound Live event. Tomas is the newest speaker to be added to the lineup, and one you won't want to miss. Make sure you reserve your spot ASAP before ticket prices rise, at UnderdogEmpowerment.com/Events. What You'll Learn: What you should do when you're emotionally charged. What your kids need from you, and what they don't. How to know what to eliminate, automate, and delegate. Why everyone needs to be good at marketing.   Favorite Quote: “I'm not scared of the work, but why do something 2-3 times if you don't have to.” -Tomas Keenan   Connect with Tomas: UnF*ck Your Business LinkedIn Instagram How to Get Involved: Get podcasting help here. He was on fire at the recent Alpha Underdog Empowerment event, and today he's here to fan the flames. Tommy Mello is a leader in the home service industry, but it took him a lot of trial and error to get there. Growing up in Michigan, Tommy learned what hard work looked like from his parents. They didn't have a lot, but were never short on love. After his parents divorce, Tommy would end up moving to Phoenix to live with his dad in 1999. To make money, Tommy started bussing tables and washing dishes. He tried his hand at landscaping, but being allergic to grass, that didn't go very well. He ended up finding himself in the garage door business, but realized if he were to take a vacation, the business would collapse. That told Tommy it wasn't much of a business, just a job.   Tommy went through everything from losing $30,000 to the IRS, being lied to, cheated, and even having arson done to his business. He learned from each mistake though, and now has over 500 employees, and is in 20 states. His next step is to get into acquisitions, and to do $200 million in business. After reading the book, Profit First: Transform Your Business From a Cash Eating Monster to a Money Making Machine, Tommy has learned to control spending, have a budget, and institute more follow up. He's doubled down on branding and training, and is ready to reach for the stars. He says he also learned a lot from the book, The Compound Effect, in which the author discusses how he has to change who he is in order to attract what he wants. During Covid, Tommy tried this. He built a list of things he needed to be in order to attract high performers. Since then, he's hired someone who's whole job is to help the employees to dream again. Whether they want to own a home, go on a dream vacation, or put their kids in private school, as an employer, Tommy holds them accountable to their dreams. Tommy hosts a podcast called The Home Service Expert that he started when he realized other people have the same questions he does. He's taken it a step further and written a book called Home Expert Millionaire that encourages people to pursue trades. Going into a trade can make you money and be a great job. For a lot of folks, CBD is a tool in their toolkit for breaking out of addiction and ending destructive cycles in their life. At the end of the day, that's what this show, and our belief in CBD, is most about — ending toxic cycles and beginning healthy ones. And that's why we felt we had to hear from Erik Allen on the show.   Erik Allen's life started out normally enough, with Sunday school and Little League games. But when he was 11, his parents got divorced, and his life started to go nowhere fast.   His mom's new boyfriend, an extremely abusive alcoholic, moved the family to a tiny town in Montana with a population of 1,200 people. There, the abuse intensified, and one night Erik had to come to his mom's defense with a cast iron skillet. After that, he was more or less on his own, and he turned to drugs — particularly hallucinogens — for an escape. Fast forward a few years, and by age 21, he was already $28,000 in debt and had filed for bankruptcy. Holding down a job didn't come easily.   “If I didn't like something at work, I would be like, ‘Peace out' and just quit, and so I had like a ton of jobs,” he says. “Everything from working at a tech shop to working at Hot Topic to being a maid at a hotel for one day. I got fired after a day because I couldn't make the bed right. I mean, I would hop around from job to job.”    One of those jobs ultimately wound up being at Universal Records, where the pay wasn't good — for the first six months, he wasn't paid at all — but the perks were: “Over a two-year span, I probably went to 135 concerts. I was backstage living that rock star lifestyle.”   But he wasn't happy, and he was continuing to abuse drugs and alcohol. Until one day, a girl came into Starbucks, where he worked nights, and asked if he wanted to go to church with her. On this episode of “Good Dudes Grow,” Gary and Erik talk about his path to becoming sober, his life today as an MMA business owner and podcaster, and how CBD works for him.   What You'll Learn: How Erik became an entrepreneur who helps other entrepreneurs and MMA fighters be successful (and what those two groups have in common) How, after being arrested for having a bong in his teens, he thinks of the industry today Why, as a sober person, Erik feels he's still able to benefit from CBD And much more!   Favorite Quote: “I'm fascinated with people's stories, and especially break-through type stories, if somebody's going through something and they're able to break through that — break addictions or break through divorce, abuse, the failures of bankruptcy, whatever it is — and then make it big.” — Erik Allen   Connect With Erik Erik Allen Media LinkedIn Facebook   How to Get Involved: Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based around creating and selling high-quality CBD products that work to heal mind and body alike. What makes for a genuinely fruitful job search? Too many women apply themselves to work, send out their resumé left and right, leverage their connections…and wind up with nothing to show for it. When that happens, it's a perfect opportunity to take a step back and do some thinking on what you bring to the table - and what an ideal role should look like to you. After being put on leave presented the opportunity to reevaluate her career, Meghan began to notice the gap between her desire for something different and a lack of understanding about what that "something" might be. But with a little bit of support and a lot of newfound clarity, Meghan was able to put herself on a path that led to not only a better job but skills and clarity that will carry through her entire career. In this episode of The Bridge to Fulfillment, Blake and Meghan cover how being furloughed and falling back into an unproductive job search cycle helped Meghan find support and figure out what she wanted, the tools, life skills, and mindset shifts that led her to greater clarity, and how a new, more profound understanding of her value has led to a one-in-a-million dream role and unshakeable confidence. Tune in for a story that will pull you out of the endless chore of sifting through job postings and help you focus on what you need to get you into your ideal position. For Larry Roberts, the start of 2021 brought with it a major ending: his last day of working in Corporate America.    After a 21-year stint in corporate IT, Larry — a podcaster, speaker, best-selling author and top-rated course creator — was ready to make the leap and work full-time for himself. And what it took to get here has been quite the journey. Although he's long had experience in the world of side hustles, it was the growth of his podcast, Readily Random with Larry Roberts, that made him truly believe he could be own boss. And it was also podcasting that gave Larry an important tool for his sobriety.    “Podcasting as a whole was inspired because it was me looking for an outlet in my new sober reality,” he says. “About a year or so before I started podcasting, I got sober. Prior to that I was I was a hardcore alcoholic.”   For a while, Larry had been able to keep his drinking on the sly and saw himself as a “functional” alcoholic — until one day, about 14 years into his corporate career, he realized he'd become anything but functional. After two stints of hospitalization, nearly losing his job and a three-week bender in which he lived solely on gin and protein shakes, Larry went to rehab. It wasn't long after that, through a happy accident in the form of an ESPN outage and a turn to Joe Rogan, he realized that podcasting could be his medium.    On this episode of Life After Addiction And Indictment, Steve and Larry talk about how that realization became a full-blown entrepreneurial career, what it's like to leave Corporate America behind, and the advice that any new podcaster needs to hear.   What You'll Learn: How Larry monetized his podcast without relying on the usual suspects, and why he believes the “riches are in the niches” How podcasting became a vehicle for forging his new sober identity  Why, as an entrepreneur, you need to find the who — not just the how And much more!   Favorite Quote: “I'm still to this day, a firm believer in having coaches and having direction…  I have coaches for everything. And I don't do anything without making sure that I'm following in someone's footsteps that has done it before me and can guide me to do it properly.” — Larry Roberts   Connect with Larry:  You can find Larry on Clubhouse in various podcast rooms, or on:Facebook LinkedIn Readily Random Media   How To Get Involved: Find Steve on Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, or on the Life After Addiction and Indictment Facebook Group.    Enjoyed the episode? Arby Barasso's journey to CBD and cannabis as natural remedies for pain looked like a lot of people's.    At age 50, he had three hip replacements, receiving his first one before he'd reached his mid-20s. In his teens, he'd already been active as an entrepreneur. But after fracturing and dislocating his hip, his mobility — and, it seemed, his entrepreneurial prospects — were limited. To mitigate the pain, he turned to pharmaceuticals — ”whatever the doctor gives you, you kind of just take” — and by his second hip replacement surgery, he'd become addicted.    “The addiction kind of blinds you,” he says. “You're a slave to the pills. It's just automatic. It's nothing that you choose.. It's like it grabs you when it wants to grab you, and it doesn't let go.”    After running into trouble with the law, Arby objectively knew that he needed to confront his addiction, but the reality was that he struggled to shake it. Until his friend and business partner introduced him to CBD. Today, Arby is co-founder of Green Roads and a pioneer in the hemp industry. On this episode of Good Dudes Grow, Gary and Arby discuss Arby's path to hemp entrepreneurship, why pharmaceutical dependence is such a problem in the U.S., and where he sees the industry going next.   What You'll Learn: How Arby kicked his pharmaceutical addiction How we can ensure the plant stays in the people's hands (and not in Big Pharma's) Why Arby thinks the hemp industry can help solve some of the planet's climate problems And much more!   Favorite Quote: “I'm very positive and bullish in this space, even though we're going through a really tough 2020. But I'm always going to be bullish because I think natural alternatives are really what the future of this country and the globe is going to be.” — Arby Barasso   Connect With Arby:  Green Roads Green Road's Instagram Arby's Instagram Arby's LinkedIn   How to Get Involved: Gary Roberts is the founder and CEO of Pure Body Zen, a company based around creating and selling high-quality CBD products that work to heal mind and body alike. Favorite Quote: “I'm an analyzer. I'm an internal processor, I love to solve problems, but I like to do that independently. And I was stuck - clearly, I was stuck. I didn't know what the answer was. I knew what I wanted to move away from, but I didn't know what I wanted to move towards. And so just starting to say some of those things out loud, even something as simple as getting some new language and new words to use to describe what I was feeling was really helpful, and to think differently about my skill set outside of the industry that I had been in for so long.”   Genna Bohlman   How to Get Involved:   To schedule a 15-minute discovery call to see if or how Blake can help you, go to: www.speakwithBlake.com   To get access to free resources, updates & future events, join Blake's newsletter at: www.bridge2fulfillment.com   For more information about us & alternate ways to connect, visit: www.ConnectionsIlluminated.com   Like this episode?
