Mastering Resilience: Turn Loss and Pain Into Your Ultimate Source of Power

Underdog Empowerment

In the relentless arena of life, there's one thing I know for certain: it's going to punch you square in the mouth. Adversity is not an occasional guest; it's an unwelcome companion that tags along uninvited. To navigate these turbulent waters, one must don the armor of resilience. Today, let's delve into the art of mastering resilience, the alchemical process of turning loss and pain into ultimate power.   Today marks a significant milestone - the 400th episode of Underdog Empowerment. As we commemorate this episode, we are thrilled to announce that the Alpha Dog Pound is officially open for enrollment. The elite signup window is closing this Friday, and the Alpha Dog Pound Academy will be accessible for the next two weeks. Regardless of where you stand in your personal or professional journey, there's a level tailored just for you at alphadogpoundlive.com.   Reflecting on my own path, I recently suffered a significant injury that taught me invaluable lessons. It was a cold September morning when I awoke at 2 or 3 a.m., my back throbbing in agony, pain shooting down my leg. This torment persisted for a week and a half until I finally sought the help of a chiropractor. It was so severe that I couldn't hit the gym or coach kids in sports. Although I'm not yet at 100%, the chiropractor's expertise has significantly improved my condition.   This experience underscores two vital lessons. First, it's astonishing how much we appreciate something when it's taken away from us. Second, we are often more motivated to move away from pain than toward pleasure. In most cases, it's the threat of discomfort that propels us into action.   Curiosity led me to consult GPT, and it promptly furnished me with seven reasons behind our tendency to appreciate things more when they're gone. Loss aversion tops the list; humans feel the pain of losing something more acutely than the joy of gaining something of equal value. Psychological reactance, scarcity principle, regret, memory enhancement, nostalgia, and social influence all play their part in amplifying our appreciation for what we've lost.   The interplay between pain and pleasure in our motivation is a fascinating dance. When pain is absent, motivation can be elusive. However, when pain takes center stage, we become driven to fix the source of our suffering. GPT revealed some reasons behind our inclination to move away from pain rather than towards pleasure. These include evolutionary survival tactics, loss aversion, fear and anxiety, uncertainty avoidance, and the fact that painful experiences are potent teachers, shaping our mental fortitude and self-discipline.   But how can we apply these insights to our lives proactively? One strategy involves tricking yourself into feeling the pain now, using negative visualization. Imagine yourself on your deathbed, contemplating a life without good health, family, or reaching your potential. Sit with that vision and allow it to permeate your thoughts. This exercise will compel you to ponder your daily decisions and where they are leading you. It will also help you cherish the present moment and the blessings it holds.   As we celebrate this momentous 400th episode of Underdog Empowerment, let's remember that life's punches, though painful, are essential for our growth. Resilience is our shield, and the ability to transform loss and pain into power is our sword. Join us on this journey of self-discovery and transformation, and let's rewrite our stories together.   What You'll Learn: Why we appreciate something more after we've lost it. Why we're more motivated by the avoidance of pain than the possibility of pleasure. How to implement these tactics into your life. And much more!   Favorite Quote: “Adversity is a part of life, and if you're not prepared for it, if you're not resilient, it's going to be tough.” -Zach Babcock   How to Get Involved: Get podcasting help here. Joey Yak, a guest on the fifth episode of the Underdog Empowerment podcast, shares a profound journey of personal growth and self-realization that has transformed his life since then. During his first appearance on the podcast, Joey was in a modest 2-bedroom, 1-bath house, working out of a shed, and grappling with feelings of impostor syndrome. However, he now resides in a beautiful home, has a thriving business, and has emerged from the shadow of self-doubt.   Joey's transformative journey begins with a realization that he doesn't have to prove himself to others; instead, he needs to prove himself to himself. Initially driven by the pursuit of money, he discovers that this path led to a loss of identity. He learns that the key to fulfillment lies in helping others and delivering value. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining this drive while finding happiness in one's current circumstances.   One of the significant turning points in Joey's life was his battle with addiction to Adderall and alcohol. He openly shares that cannabis played a pivotal role in helping him overcome the need for Adderall. While he acknowledges the stigma surrounding it, he believes in normalizing its use as a useful medication. Cannabis sparks his creativity and enhances his overall happiness, and he no longer feels guilty about its consumption.   Joey admits that he's not an operator in business because he lacks passion for it. He underscores the importance of pursuing what you love right from the start, rather than chasing easy, fast money with the intention of later transitioning to your true passion. This realization has led him to align his efforts with his passions, ultimately achieving greater satisfaction.   Joey offers valuable advice on building a reputation beyond one's local area before returning to the local market. He believes that this approach can significantly boost one's credibility and opportunities.   As he discusses his daily routine, Joey emphasizes the importance of walking to clear his mind, eating clean to avoid binging, and taking charge of his mornings. These practices significantly impact his mood and overall well-being.   One of the key lessons Joey imparts is the importance of not letting fear of letting go of a team hold you back. Procrastinating such decisions can be detrimental, and he encourages a focus on "Return on Energy" rather than solely on Return on Investment.   Joey's career shift centers on offering creative content at an affordable rate through his platform, "Get Attention STL." He coaches individuals, develops concepts, and creates content to help clients gain attention and expand their reach.   When asked about the advice he would give himself if starting over with nothing but knowledge and wisdom gained through experiences, Joey emphasizes the importance of focusing on what truly fulfills you and going all-in on that passion. He advises building deep relationships with clients, prioritizing quality over quantity, and investing in meaningful connections.   In conclusion, Joey Yak's journey is a testament to the power of self-discovery and alignment with one's true passions. His story reminds us that happiness and success come when we prioritize personal fulfillment, help others, and stay true to ourselves, regardless of external pressures or expectations. Joey's experiences offer valuable insights for anyone seeking a path to greater fulfillment and purpose in life.   What You'll Learn: Why chasing the money will leave you broke.  3 things people do when they're getting burnt out. Why you should focus on quality over quantity. Zach has big news to share today, and it's news you would've already been privy to if you're subscribed to the Underdog Empowerment newsletter. So if you haven't already, go sign up at www.underdogempowerment.com/subscribe. Coming out of prison, Zach started to see financial success in 2019 and was straight up killing it by 2020. However, as his bank account inflated, so did his ego, and he had to reel that in. He moved his family out of the ghetto at the end of 2020 and hosted his first mastermind in January of 2021. He did everything everyone said he would never do, but he still didn't feel fulfilled. While he was a better person than he was just a few years prior, Zach realized that he had to go deep and kill off all the pieces of himself that no longer served him.  One thing that he's letting go of is his podcast production agency, Podcast Powertrain. It was always meant to be a stepping stone, and he feels that he's long overdue for the next step. Going forward, Zach wants to focus on his personal podcast, live events, masterminds, his jiu-jitsu journey, and his Alpha Underdog apparel line. After just 8 weeks of training, Zach is jumping into his first jiu-jitsu competition at the end of the month and will launch his apparel line at his Alpha Dog Pound Live event on July 14th. So, while he's closing some doors, he's charging through bigger and better ones.    What You'll Learn: When and where to sign up for the next Alpha Dog Pound mastermind? An Unorthodox and Very Effective Way to Build Your Funnel with Alex Vonderhaar

Underdog Empowerment

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 23, 2023 57:23

We're all familiar with digital marketing, but have you heard of neuromarketing? Chances are you haven't since today's guest, Alex Vonderhaar, is one of the only one's talking about it. It's completely unorthodox and will flip the script on marketing as we know it. Alex is no stranger to the Underdog Empowerment podcast, so if you missed his story before, check it out on this past episode. Today he's sharing the exact framework he uses to bridge neuroscience and digital marketing to get results that last.    As cliche as it sounds, Alex says it all starts with mindset. If you've never heard of the prime number maze, it was something discovered by physicist Richard Feynman. He found that rats could be trained to make it through a maze by turning at every even or every odd number, but they couldn't be trained to turn at prime numbers because it was too abstract. He found that there could be patterns in our daily lives that, if followed, would lead us to success, but we just couldn't comprehend them. In other words, we could see the how, but the why may not make sense yet, and that kept people stuck.    Alex's work has been around getting people to follow the how, accepting that they might not understand the why until after the fact. This will be extremely beneficial going forward, especially with how social media has pulled a 180 in 2022. The FTC has recently come in and said that people without clear demonstrations to get results, can't claim results. There was a big click funnels guy recently that claimed he could get people all these results, but when you went through his system that often wasn't the case. He was teaching the why, not the how.    Because of these changes, Alex predicts the entire marketing and client acquisition process will need to be revamped over the next couple of years. One small step that Alex recommends making is to stop putting all the focus on ROI, but more so on the ROMI, or return on marketing initiative. It all starts with identifying your TAM, or total addressable market. For Alex, that's business owners making at least $100,000/month. You can narrow that down to an avatar within your TAM, which would be your ideal client. Now, how can you visually empower that person? Alex uses the acronym of SUCCES (yes, that's success without the last s): Simple, uncertainty, concrete, credibility, emotion, and stories.   Let's start with simple. Is your product or service straightforward and easy to understand? If so, move on to uncertainty. We can use an air of uncertainty or mystery to build up the hype. Now, concrete it in people's minds, make it something they can't easily forget. As far as credibility, we have both internal and external. Internal focuses on convincing details, such as data and statistics. For external, you can either establish yourself as an authority, or paint competitors as an anti-authority. Tapping into your audience's emotions can be done by focusing on one person. It's hard to tap into the emotions of a whole group, but if you can make one person emotional, it will impact everyone around them. It's the power of association. All of this can get people to pay attention, understand, care, feel secure, and even act, but ultimately, you have to be a storyteller.   This process works for both products and services, but it will take time, so don't give up before the payoff. Alex recommends a 90 day minimum. It's all about demonstrating, over and over, so that they can see the results. Your top of funnel should be built around blogs and YouTube videos, where you continuously demonstrate your product or service's success. You can use both of those avenues to build your email and SMS lists. That's where the middle of the funnel comes in as something like a Facebook community; somewhere you can hold them and keep them warm. Throughout all of this, you're getting them to know, like, and trust you. Potential clients should have the opportunity to vet you and trust you before they reach any traditional sales pitch. It's all about playing the long game.   We want people to be self-validating as they move down the funnel. If you force them down the funnel, even if they buy your product or service, they're bound to quickly end up in the ‘what have you done for me lately' phase. If they've sold themselves, the honeymoon phase will last much longer and they won't go there. You want potential clients to feel like they're the only one that matters, and this can be done by letting them establish credibility on their own terms.    Too often the game plan is to just dump money into paid ads and see what happens. It might work, but it's a gamble. Wouldn't you rather go in with a strategy that uses your best assets and increases your chances of success? Not to mention, so many people will run ads before they've gotten their email, SMS, or website in order. That's counter-productive! You want all parts of your funnel growing together. So, remember, listen to the experts, and listen to the how. Don't worry about the why in the beginning, because chances are you can't see what they see… yet.    What You'll Learn: What TAM is and how to identify yours. Why you should focus more on ROMI than ROI. Where a podcast can fit into your funnel.  Why back of funnel gets overlooked and why it's just as important.   Favorite Quote: “All great marketing takes a little bit of time to sink in, and most people give up on it way too early.” -Alex Vonderhaar   Connect With Alex: Instagram Neuro-Insider Newsletter   ______________________________________________________________________   How to Get Involved: Get podcasting help here.   For more on how to grow your business, check out this episode.    If you enjoyed this episode, head over and visit us on Apple Podcasts - leave a review and let us know what you thought! One of the first people to take Zach's original Podcast Powertrain courses was Jay Dan Gumm. He credits Zach's guidance with propelling him to where he is today. As the host of Background Check, Jay Dan aims to help people with a past realize their future. Having spent some time in prison himself, Jay Dan knows first hand how hard it can be to not only stay out of prison, but to elevate your life.     Growing up, Jay Dan was raised in the church and went to private school, but he was a rebel. Becoming an alcoholic by age 13, Jay Dan was kicked out of two junior high schools. He straightened up for a little bit since his mother was a teacher at the school, but when he went to college he picked up right where he left off. He can't count the number of times he was arrested for alcohol related incidents. After his 5th DWI, Jay Dan was facing prison. He had a court appearance for a bond hearing, and the judge told Jay Dan that he didn't see a bright future for him, so his bond was denied. He ended up spending 3 years in prison, but it wasn't all bad. That's where Jay Dan's faith journey began. He says he heard a voice tell him that there's more to life than getting drunk. While in prison, Jay Dan was mentored by two other inmates. When they got out, he thought they'd go change the world, but instead they landed back in prison before Jay Dan even left. That's when he realized he wanted to help people getting out of jail to not only stay out, but to thrive. That's how the organization Forgiven Felons came to be.    With his own struggles to get hired as a convicted felon, Jay Dan decided to start his own handyman business. The problem was things would get slow in the fall and winter months. So, when someone asked Jay Dan to hang Christmas lights for them, he realized that's how he could get through the slow season. He now has as many customers as he can handle alone. Still, he hopes to scale the business into year-round exterior lighting so that he can hire other felons that need work. Forgiven Felons has also grown into transitional housing, and soon a resource center. Often visiting prisons to spread his story, Jay Dan can't imagine going back to his old ways.   When Covid hit in 2020, Jay Dan could no longer go to the prisons to speak with the inmates. That's when he says a voice inside told him to start a podcast. He didn't know the first thing about starting a podcast, and was told he should check out Zack Babcock. Jay Dan took all of Zach's courses, bought all the equipment he recommended, and hit the ground running. He dove right in, with his first guest being a man that was wrongly convicted for murder, and his second, a lady from the Netflix documentary, I Am A Killer. He's since interviewed inmates, a retired warden, and soon a current warden. Jay Dan's success came from implementing the information he received from Zach. After all, effort is not all you need, you need it in the right direction.    Another incentive to succeed that Jay Dan offers anyone that's worked for him for at least a year and wants to start their own business, is that he'll help them. He will buy them startup assets, and all he asks in return is that they give back to the Forgiven Felons organization in some way when they're able. Wherever Jay Dan goes, he asks what his purpose is. He knows that everything happens for a reason, and believes in always doing the next right thing. He stays on the right path through discipline and consistency. He knows that having core values to live by is important. His family's core values are love, honor, generosity, and curiosity.    If you would like to build a dominant brand like Jay Dan with a podcast, you can check out Underdog Empowerment. Entrepreneurship involves a great deal of risk, yet so many people are too afraid to take a risk that could change their life significantly for the better. When we remove risk, we also remove the reward. With risk removal, there is a cost and it is usually the reduction of the ROI you will get from taking a leap toward your vision and greater purpose. Zachary Babcock understands the gain that happens when you put yourself out there, commit to personal development, but stay true to your value and do the right thing by others. Zach is back on the 365 Driven podcast for the third time for a fun and candid conversation with Tony about why hustle culture is outdated, why revenue doesn't matter, and why critical thinkers are hard to come by nowadays. Both Zach and Tony think back to when they began their personal development journeys and the lessons they learned getting to where they are now. Both of them have made tremendous strides in improving how to communicate with others and get their message out to the world. Zach served 5 years in prison before building his brand, and Tony went from being terrified of public speaking, to now being an award-winning speaker, delivering his message on stages all over the world.  Showing up consistently, letting go of what other people might think, and following your gut, are key to reaching your potential. Zach shares the habits that he focuses on each and every day that led to him being able to help people build a celebrity brand and explosive business with his top-rated podcast, Underdog Empowerment. Key highlights: Zach's background of rehab, trauma, and prison and how he turned his life around by putting in the work every day Tony's vision for the 365 Driven brand Too many people are not focusing on the long game and building something meaningful Focus on serving people and helping people and success and money will follow Purpose is fluid and changes with age Why time feels like it goes faster as we get older Why critical thinking is becoming rare What does it mean to be a thought leader? What Zach and Tony have learned from podcasting How to be a better storyteller Tony's story about being terrified of public speaking and how he overcame it Is your purpose strong enough to not care about haters and people that criticize?  Consistency over time: Show up consistently and get the results that come with that For resources and links mentioned in this episode, visit: 365driven.com/episode278

Zach is keeping it short, sweet, and concise with a win-win tactic that you can start utilizing today. Would you like to service your clients at a higher level, make a memorable experience for them, and make more money? The key to that could be one ten-minute phone call a week.    Zach calls it the 4-question phone call. Simply select someone from your audience that's engaged with your content, and ask them if you could get to know them better over a quick call. During that call you'll ask the following: where they found out about you, what they like about you, what they don't like about you, and what problem you can help them solve.    This is great information to collect because you'll have a pulse on your audience and what they need. We're hot off the heels of the Underdog Empowerment event, and today's guest, Callye Keen, is fired up after attending. One of the topics touched on during the event was building a community, and today we're taking a deep dive into why that is so important. Partnerships and collaboration are one of Callye's biggest focuses as the Chief Business Development Officer at K-Form. He's always asking himself, “Who can I work with? Who can I add value to? Who can I collaborate with to increase impact?” He's well aware that no billion-dollar company was built alone. It's no secret to Callye that we can do things together that we couldn't do alone.   Normally charging a minimum of $50k as a consultant, and $3,500-$5,000/month for coaching, Callye is currently offering his expertise at a heavily discounted price. He's doing it because he wants to meet people where they are, helping the people that need it the most. By joining his community, you'll not only learn how to start and scale a business, but he'll share his simple strategy he used to presell 150 $700 fidget spinners with zero dollars in ads. It's the same strategy he's used to sell technical products to some of the biggest tech companies, including Google and Microsoft. Callye has been designing, manufacturing, and selling products for a long time, and he has plenty of knowledge to share. To get in on the action, head over to www.redbluecollective.com/movement and sign up for just $49/month. There's zero risk as if, after three months, you don't think it's worth it, Callye will refund your money.  To further sweeten the deal, Callye says to decline the upsell offer, and instead DM him to let him know you signed up because of Underdog Empowerment, and he'll throw that upsell opportunity in for free.    What You'll Learn: Why community is so important. The biggest mistake that entrepreneurs make when starting out. How to access Callye's expertise for a heavily discounted price. Don't be afraid to bet on yourself. When you value yourself and your potential, and you do the work, you'll be surprised at your own momentum, and you'll be leveling-up in no time. That's what Jason wants you to tell yourself every day, because that's how he's made his real estate fortune. Jason Roberts is the owner of REI Blueprint. He's an educator, coach, and a real estate investor. Outside of REI Blueprint, he owns several other businesses that specialize in education and coaching in real estate investing. On this episode of Underdog Empowerment, Jason jams with Zack about the generational power in his company, REI Blueprint. His first company started in a bedroom, with an ironing board as a desk, and evolved into a multi-million dollar company. Then, the recession of 2007 hit, and he had to start all over again. Since he did, he's learned a lot: how to use your business as a tool to reach the life you want, how to bounce back from hardship, how to seek out people to learn from, and apply their teachings to your own world. Freedom Love'n Zach Babcock, an Alpha Underdog who flipped his life around after 5 years in prison.  He is the host of the highly in-demand, Underdog Empowerment podcast, where he's documented his come up, even before his entrepreneurial success.  Zach is, also, the founder of Podcast Powertrain; where he and his team help alpha entrepreneurs create dominant brands with top-rated podcasts. He has also founded the Convicted Life podcast, which airs into prisons to help change the life of inmates while they are transforming for successes after their time. Zach doesn't have all the answers, nobody does, yet he sticks his neck on the line every day and shares what he discovers in the process. He gets around the greatest minds in the game to bring you the best and most crucial tips and tricks for your success. Through a hard journey and many trials, Zach began building his business. When he got out of prison it was time to get to work. He got out of prison on October 2nd, 2014. His journey has not been easy, and due to this he got into entrepreneurship, as he didn't have many options. Plus, he liked the idea of betting on himself. However, it was a struggle, and he barely got by. He did network marketing for 2 years, made almost $2k a month within his first 6 months, but that just wasn't his thing. Therefore, his business crumbled, and he left after 2 years. At the very beginning of 2017, he became a ‘life coach'. He didn't make a single penny or help anybody as a life coach because he needed a clearer message to give. Every time he tried to collaborate with anyone, nobody took him seriously. Rather, he was just some ex-convict turned entrepreneur afterthought that nobody gave the time of day to. Boy how things have changed for Zach… In this episode, Zach will walk you through how he journeyed from 60+ hour work weeks down to a 15 hour a week work schedule. How he has found joy in having more freedom to be with his kids and family and having more time in the woods on Fridays.  As well as, how to get your team to voice their opinions and seeing their value through taking ownership of the work, to build leaders in your organization. On today's show, we welcome Zachary Babcock. A true underdog, CEO, and founder of Underdog Empowerment. Underdog Empowerment is a consulting program and podcast which helps others to earn respect and actualize their dreams. After his own struggles with not being taken seriously by his peers due to his past, he focused that pain and frustration into following his dreams. Don't miss these highlights: Zackary looks back at his first videos, sometimes humorously, to see how they document the growing process Discusses his aspirations and focuses for the year, including a digital course space and podcast agency Explains the importance of self-promotion, while remaining humble but delivering with confidence By keeping the underdog mentality, he shares his insight into the importance of finding a mentor How by continuing to push through resistance, he has found a method to increase profits About the Guest:  Zachary Babcock had to learn the hard way as he began building his business - because, it was time to get to work when he got out of prison on October 2nd, 2014. It definitely wasn't easy - he got into entrepreneurship because he didn't have many options. Plus he liked the idea of betting on himself. However, it was a struggle, and he barely got by.  He did network marketing for 2 years, and made almost $2k a month within his first 6 months, but it just wasn't his thing. So, his business crumbled and he left after 2 years. Then, at the very beginning of 2017, he became a 'life coach'. He didn't make a single penny or help anybody as a life coach because his messaging was a “hot mess”, and like everyone just starting out, he “sucked”. Every time he tried to collaborate with anyone, nobody took him seriously. Rather, he was just some ex-convict turned entrepreneur afterthought that nobody gave the time of day to - because, "Who is Zach Babcock?" https://underdogempowerment.com/ (https://underdogempowerment.com/) Here on Underdog Empowerment, you're going to learn how to master skills to build your business and personal brand as I master mine (yeah, I practice what I preach unlike a lot of these clowns). Whether you've been in the game for a while and you're already ball'n out or if you're just starting out, you'll have access to everything I've already mastered, and everything I'm currently learning.  I don't have all the answers, nobody does. But I stick my neck on the line every day and share what I discover in the process. And I get around the greatest minds in the game https://underdogempowerment.com/podcast/ (on my podcast) to streamline everything. No one's story reads like yours. But business ownership and the world of entrepreneurs can make it feel necessary to tell a story that isn't yours, or to make yourself into someone you aren't. Suddenly, you're not making decisions that fit with you anymore. How do you get back on track and continue to succeed?  Zachary Babcock lasted exactly half a shift at his first job. Equipped with a naturally restless mind, he walked a winding path – including drug use, 5 years of prison time and a stint in life coaching – and ended up finding a way to make an impact on others like him through podcasting. Now, he runs the Underdog Empowerment podcast, which has drawn an avid listener base and reached the top 50 list on iTunes.  On this episode of the Rigging the Game podcast, Zach and Dan walk through the concept of “playing your own game”, the blueprint for (quickly) churning out unique, high-quality content, and how Zach turned the perceived “weaknesses” of his childhood into superpowers. You can truly dominate in life if you get rid of your victim mindset. Your cup must be full before filling anyone else's cup. Human nature wants to complicate some things that don't need to be complicated. You learn by doing so take more action and pivot when necessary.
