* Mark Armitage back on RSR: Real Science Radio host Bob Enyart interviews long-time friend Mark Armitage on his latest soft tissue discoveries published in a Cambridge University Press science journal, Microscopy Today. Bob welcomes Mark back to RSR after seven years during which time Armitage founded DSTRI, the Dinosaur Soft Tissue Research Institute. Here are three brief quotes from his paper on autofluorescence microscopy of dinosaur bones revealing blood clots. "dinosaur neurovascular bundles travel as a triad of veins, vessels, and nerve fibers, as in other vertebrates." And regarding the Schweitzer iron rescue device, "free iron was unavailable, at least in these... bones." And see all of our RSR programs with Mark listed at rsr.org/armitage. And you may want to listen to the second of our two 2021 Armitage interviews... Paleontology Breakthrough! Now, dinosaur nerve bundles! * 29 Journals, 57 Papers: Mark Armitage is on back-to-back RSR episodes! To date, 29 peer-reviewed science journals have published a total of 57 dinosaur biomaterial discoveries including Nature, Science, Cretaceous Research, Current Biology, Geology, Paleontology, Vertebrate Paleontology, Nature Communications, Scientific Reports, PLoS ONE, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, and PNAS. The many dinosaur and other Mesozoic creatures yielding their original still-soft biological material include hadrosaur, titanosaur, the [ostrich-like] ornithomimosaur, Nodosaur, mosasaur, [bird-like] Anchiornis huxleyi, Triceratops, Lufengosaur, Archaeopteryx, and T. rex. Powerful Google Creation Tool! Multiple Creation Site Search! In fossils from dinosaur-layer and "deeper", i.e. believed older, strata, researchers have discovered flexible and transparent blood vessels and cartilage, red blood cells, starch, many various proteins including beta-keratin, the microtubule building block tubulin, collagen, mollusk shell glycoprotein and dino eggshell peptides and chelating ligands, chitin, the cytoskeleton components actin, tropomyosin, and the related motor protein myosin, and hemoglobin, bone maintenance osteocyte cells, pigment including melanosomes, clearly-seen chromosome-like structures within cell nucleus, DNA-related histone proteins, and powerful evidence for DNA including positive results from multiple double-helix tests including IP and DAPI on fossils from various dinosaurs. And now, thanks to microscopist Mark Armitage, dinosaur nerve bundles! So we invite you to enjoy today's interview with Mark, see his cover story paper in the latest issue of Microscopy Today, a Cambridge University Press journal, and check out all our related programs at rsr.org/armitage! Last year on the podcast, we learned that health and security are a lot more closely linked than we ever imagined. The Covid19 pandemic amplified that fact exponentially. We realized that we had some big questions about systemic racism, misogyny and intolerance in Canadian policing. We also wanted a better understanding what it might actually mean to defund the police. We reached out to BC RCMP Deputy Commissioner Jennifer Strachan for her take on things, and for a Canadian, and an historical context. In the aftermath of the Bastarache Report, Jennifer brought us her perspectives on where the RCMP has been, where the organization is now, and where it's headed. Join us for this wide-ranging conversation that explores everything from RCMP training, to police handling of culturally sensitive issues, to intolerance within the force, and what's being done to make things better. For PDF copies of the Rainbow Project Initiative and the RCMP Guide to Supporting Transgender, Non-Binary and Two-Spirit Employees, mentioned in this episode, email us at info@smallconversationspodcast.ca and we'll send you the PDFs. Episode 124 - Beth Siemer. Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Beth Siemer. Beth's bio: "My core personal values are to LOVE God and LOVE people. My core political values are the pursuit of a More Perfect Union with Liberty and Justice for All. Pretty much everything I do is driven by these core values, including my current engagement in dialogue on Facebook. I'm a truth-seeker by nature, which drives me to dig deep in understanding what it looks like to pursue these values. Part of digging deep for me includes continually pressure-testing my thoughts with other people and course-correcting in my own understanding where needed. I'm also an advocate by nature and assume most people generally share these core values and also want to align with them, which drives me to share my thoughts to the extent it's helpful to others. In my professional life, my career has taken turns as I try to do the next best thing in front of me. Currently, I'm a corporate transactional attorney in the specialty pharmacy space. In my outside-of-work life, I have two teenage daughters who are ridiculously incredible and interesting humans—I'm thrilled that I get to have a front row seat in their lives. My husband, Rob, and I have been married for 22 years and we make our home in St. Louis, Missouri. I was raised in the evangelical church, but would call myself a “deconstructing Christian” if I had to call myself something. I believe in God, love the heck out of Jesus and do my best to live my life by His example, but cannot for the life of me figure out what to do with the organized church. In my muchness, I insist on squeezing everything out of every minute I get on this earth, and particularly love laughing, making others laugh, traveling, baking, cooking, eating, drinking, throwing awesome parties, walking, listening to music (which includes pretending my singing voice and dance moves are better than they are), completing projects, watching TV and movies, gardening (poorly), connecting with folks, teaching others new things, learning new things, getting alone time, and riding roller coasters. Our bodies are “wired” to perform. Learning how to consciously modulate your internal sympathetic state is the key to unlocking optimal performance. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) facilitates survival by generating the fight-or-flight response and promotes recovery following activation (the ability to relax). The ANS achieves this by balancing two complementary systems: the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). For example, your ANS is currently adjusting your pupillary diameter, respiratory rate, blood pressure, heart rate, skin conductance, sweat production, sphincter tone and postural muscles (just to name a few) to allow you to focus your eyes to read this information without passing out, falling over, overheating or urinating on yourself.
