Welcome to the latest Midlife Minute episode. Today, we're talking about elimination diets, iron, and ferritin. I share my personal experience with prolonged antibiotic and antifungal use, clarify what the research actually says about restrictive diets, nutrient deficiencies, fatigue, and brain fog, and highlight why it's essential to understand your iron status during the menopausal transition. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: Why elimination diets can be helpful in specific situations, but may not be appropriate for the long term How removing major food groups without a replacement strategy can cause unintended nutrient deficiencies Why some women become more reactive to certain foods during the menopausal transition How women's protein requirements increase during perimenopause and menopause How low ferritin is often overlooked in women, even when they are experiencing fatigue and brain fog Why women's iron status fluctuates during the perimenopause to menopause transition How some women experience significant symptoms long before anemia appears in their standard lab work Connect with Cynthia Thurlow Follow on X, Instagram & LinkedIn Check out Cynthia's website. Dr. Alan Castel, PhD, is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and one of the world's foremost experts on human memory and cognitive aging. We discuss what science actually tells us about how to improve our learning ability and memory at any age. We also discuss how memory works, why all planning and imagination about the future is based on the past, false memories, and how to leverage curiosity, emotion, and self-testing retrieval practice to stamp in memories for the long term. We discuss what "superagers"—people who actually improve their cognitive capacity with age—do differently than everyone else. This episode is for anyone interested in the science of memory and tools to maintain and improve your memory across the lifespan. Today, I want to talk about one of the most common misconceptions surrounding retatrutide and the recent Phase 3 results released by Eli Lilly. If you've seen the headlines, you've probably read that participants lost over 70 pounds or nearly 30% of their body weight. Those results are absolutely impressive and represent one of the most significant advances we've seen in obesity medicine. But there's an important detail that often gets overlooked when people see those numbers. Those results did not happen in a few months. The average weight loss reported in the study occurred over approximately 80 weeks, about a year and a half, with some participants followed for up to two years. Everyone says people with ADHD have "time blindness." But what does that actually mean?In this Research Recap, Skye Waterson and Will Curb review a decade of research (2012–2022) on time perception in adults with ADHD. Rather than treating time as one skill, the research separates it into three: estimating how long something will take, reproducing a duration, and managing time day to day.One finding stands out: many ADHD struggles begin with inaccurate time estimation. If your brain can't reliably predict how long a task will take, missed deadlines, last-minute work, and chronic lateness start to make much more sense. Skye and Will also explore what the research suggests actually helps—from visual timers and external cues to breaking projects into smaller pieces that are easier to estimate. What You'll LearnWhy ADHD affects time estimation, time reproduction, and time management differentlyThe difference between circadian, interval, and millisecond timingWhy visual timers often work better than clocksWhy giving yourself "more time" usually isn't the solutionHow breaking projects into smaller steps improves time estimationWhy external accountability is often more effective than self-imposed deadlinesLearn more from Will at HackingYourADHD.com or subscribe to the Hacking Your ADHD podcast. If you're an entrepreneur with ADHD who's tired of being asked “Why don't you just hire/make a system/delegate?” We've gotchu! Building physical strength is one of the most effective, science-backed ways to protect your brain from cognitive decline and extend your healthy lifespan. Join Reagan as she sits down with Dr. George Kramer to discuss the critical biological links between muscle tissue, neuroprotection, and aging. They talk about the "Type 3 Diabetes" link to Alzheimers and Dementia and how strong and active skeletal muscle can significantly decrease this process. Dr. Kramer explains that raw physical strength and lower-body power (leg strength) are the single highest predictors of cognitive function and survivability as we age. He also gives easy tips on how we can do exercise "snacks" each day to bring overall strength and balance to our brains and bodies! This week, Tee is joined by Dr. John E. Lewis, PhD, founder and president of Dr. Lewis Nutrition, clinical nutrition researcher, and author of more than 180 peer-reviewed scientific publications. With a career spanning decades in nutrition, exercise science, and human health, Dr. John has dedicated his life to studying how nutrition can influence aging, cognitive function, and overall wellness. In this fascinating conversation, he shares how his journey from competitive bodybuilding to scientific research led him to discover the powerful role of polysaccharides—complex carbohydrates found in plants such as aloe vera and rice bran. In this chat, Dr. John explains why not all sugars are created equal and breaks down the science behind polysaccharides, which he describes as some of nature's most sophisticated and beneficial compounds. He discusses how these plant-derived nutrients support immune regulation, reduce chronic inflammation, nourish the gut microbiome, and influence cellular communication throughout the body. He also shares why aloe vera has earned the title of "the plant of life" in his research and how both aloe and rice bran have been used for centuries for their healing properties. The conversation also explores Dr. John's groundbreaking research at the University of Miami involving individuals with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. He discusses findings that showed significant improvements in cognitive function, reductions in inflammatory markers, enhanced immune function, and increased adult stem cell production. In addition, Dr. Lewis shares his personal journey to a plant-based lifestyle, challenges common misconceptions about nutrition and protein, and explains why he believes food remains one of the most powerful tools available for improving healthspan and quality of life. If you're interested in brain health, healthy aging, nutrition science, and natural approaches to wellness, this episode offers an eye-opening look at emerging research that could reshape how we think about aging and disease prevention. Today, I want to have a conversation about something that is often missing from discussions about weight loss. We live in a world where people are constantly searching for the fastest way to lose weight. Every year there is a new diet trend, a new supplement, or a new social media influencer promising a shortcut to success. And because of this, many people begin their weight loss journey believing that the primary goal is simply to make the number on the scale go down. While losing weight may be one of the outcomes we are seeking, it is not the ultimate goal. The real goal is creating a healthier body that functions more efficiently, has more energy, experiences less inflammation, and is better equipped to support us throughout our lives. You've been told you pivot too fast. This research suggests your timing might be right.A 2024 Royal Society paper tested how long people stay in a depleting resource before moving to a new one, using a model from ecology called the marginal value theorem. The prediction was that ADHD traits would cause people to leave too soon. The data found the opposite. ADHD participants left patches closer to the mathematically optimal point and ended up with more total reward. Skye and Robbie break down the bias built into the original prediction and what it means for telling the difference between a smart pivot and flailing. What We Cover:The 2024 study and the foraging game researchers builtThe marginal value theorem and what "optimal" leaving looks likeWhy the prediction assumed ADHD would underperformWhat the actual results showed about exit timingHow to tell a strategic pivot from impulsive flailingIf you're an entrepreneur with ADHD who's tired of being asked “Why don't you just hire/make a system/delegate?” We've gotchu! Today, we're talking about something that catches a lot of people off guard after switching to retatrutide. You may notice that you're feeling hungrier, some of the food noise is starting to creep back in, or your weight loss isn't moving as quickly as it was in the beginning. In some cases, it may even feel like you've hit a plateau. At first, that can seem confusing. After all, retatrutide is one of the most powerful weight-loss medications currently being studied. So if you're taking a medication that's designed to help with appetite and weight loss, why would hunger increase and progress start to slow down? The answer is actually a lot more normal, and a lot more interesting, than most people realize. So let's break down what's happening and why these changes don't necessarily mean the medication has stopped working. We're talking about two specific functional mushrooms, lion's mane and reishi, and going straight into the mechanisms: the actual compounds, the actual pathways, and the actual research that explains why these mushrooms have a genuine relationship with how you feel. This is not a vibe episode. This is the science. We've been asked over and over again whether functional mushrooms can do something for mood, and if so, how. Today we answer that question properly. If you've ever walked out of a doctor's appointment feeling dismissed — told everything looks normal, maybe it's stress, maybe it's your age — this episode is what comes next. What you'll learn:Why mood is a physiological state, not just a feeling, and what that means for how you address itThe specific terpenoid compounds in lion's mane (hericenones) that can cross the blood-brain barrier and what they do once they get thereWhy BDNF is the mechanism most antidepressants are thought to work through, and how lion's mane stimulates it directlyHow 90% of your serotonin is produced in your gut, and exactly how lion's mane supports that pathwayThe three-directional approach lion's mane takes: blood-brain barrier, neuroinflammation, and gut-brain axis simultaneouslyWhat the HPA axis is, why chronic stress dysregulates it, and how reishi's ganoderic acids help restore the natural cortisol rhythmReishi's relationship with GABA, the brain's calming neurotransmitter, and why that explains the felt sense of settling downThe 2026 randomized controlled trial showing measurable reductions in anxiety, cortisol, and inflammation at 12 weeksHow disrupted sleep literally changes how your brain processes emotional information, and the two specific mechanisms reishi addresses to help with thatHow to self-diagnose which mushroom fits your experience right now, and what to track over four weeks to know whether it's workingResources Mentioned:Dr. Andrew Huberman episode on adenosine and coffee: https://www.hubermanlab.com/episode/using-caffeine-to-optimize-mental-and-physical-performanceVigna, L. et al. GLP-1 agonists, like semaglutide (brand names Ozempic and Wegovy), are peptides that mimic this natural hormone. They're typically used for managing type 2 diabetes and, more recently, for weight loss. These peptides work by enhancing insulin secretion when glucose levels are elevated, slowing down gastric emptying, and reducing appetite. They also help lower blood pressure and stabilize blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Most recently they've been approved for improving cardiovascular health. On this episode of Vitality Radio, Jared shines a spotlight on boron, one of the most overlooked minerals in human nutrition and a nutrient with surprising implications for bone health, hormone balance, vitamin D activity, and healthy aging. A major focus of this episode is osteoporosis prevention and bone density support, including why simply taking more calcium may not be the answer. Jared explores the science behind boron's role in calcium retention, magnesium utilization, vitamin D metabolism, and healthy bone formation while also discussing the importance of key bone-building cofactors like vitamin K2, silica, and magnesium. He breaks down the research on osteoporosis, osteopenia, and the "calcium paradox," while explaining how boron may support healthy hormone levels, cognitive function, joint comfort, and overall wellness. If you're concerned about aging well, maintaining strong bones, or optimizing your health naturally, this episode is a must-listen.Products:Vital D3/K2 High PotencyVital D3/K2Solaray Calcium HydroxyapatiteMagnesium Bisglycinate Ultimate Vitality MultiHakala Labs BoroTabVisit the podcast website here: VitalityRadio.comYou can follow @vitalitynutritionbountiful and @vitalityradio on Instagram, or Vitality Radio and Vitality Nutrition on Facebook. How fast does semaglutide work? The short answer is that many people will lose weight in the first week of taking semaglutide if they make lifestyle changes (e.g., increased physical activity and reduced-calorie diet). Remember, the first 4 doses are small and are primarily used to gently introduce the peptide to the body without risking stomach-related side effects. It's important to understand that it's possible to "out-eat" any weight loss medication. So, you may see little to no weight loss in the early weeks without making lifestyle changes. Resilience used to mean something. With each generation, we find comfort taking over inconveniences. Or, does strength just look different now? What should we do when we feel stuck in this modern world? Can we retrain our brains to overcome adversity or are we too far gone? In a world obsessed with shortcuts, motivation hacks, and instant gratification, Steve White argues that true transformation still comes down to one thing: learning how to keep getting up. After battling severe cognitive decline, alcoholism, seizures, depression, and near-suicidal hopelessness, Steve rebuilt his mind, body, and spirit from the ground up through relentless discipline, purpose-driven action, and a decision to fight for his life one day at a time. This conversation explores what modern society gets wrong about resilience, why younger generations are struggling to find meaning, how purpose and service create real strength, and what it practically takes to rebuild yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually in just 100 days. Today we are talking about Ipamorelin and it's potential benefits. What is Ipamorelin? Ipamorelin is a lab-made, primarily functioning as a growth hormone-releasing peptide (GHRP) or inducer. Ipamorelin works by mimicking the body's natural release of growth hormone release. It does this by increasing the number of somatotrophs (or cells responsible for growth hormone release) and it suppresses somatostatin (a growth hormone inhibiting hormone). Mili Velikova has a video on style vs taste that's worth your time before you listen to this episode. She names something real: what you're drawn to and what you actually wear with confidence are not always the same thing. And the gap between them is a genuine source of wardrobe frustration. What I've noticed is that the gap almost always has a cognitive function explanation underneath it. Your four MBTI letters are a starting point. The function stack underneath them is where the answer actually lives. That's what episode 130 is about. If you've ever loved something on the hanger and felt off in it all day, this is the missing piece. Let's connect! To suggest a podcast topic, send email to hello@signaturestylesystems.com. Nobody agreed on what done looked like. The handover happened anyway. That is where it fell apart. This episode is the practical follow-up to Wednesday. Skye and Robbie walk through the specific hiring and handover process they use with ADHD founders, including what they have lost money figuring out so you do not have to.The hiring side covers why video applications and paid test projects replace interviews, how to write a role description that filters for initiative rather than compliance, and what it looks like when you have found the right person versus when you are about to make an expensive mistake. The handover side covers the 10-80-10 rule, writing a one-sentence definition of done before anything starts, naming your re-entry triggers upfront, building a decision boundary so the team knows what comes back to you and what does not, and scheduling check-ins so the anxiety has somewhere to go other than a late-night message. They also cover the two failure modes when none of this is set up: the founder absorbs everything back, or the team stops trying. What We Cover:How to write a role description specific enough to attract the right person and filter out everyone elseWhy paid test projects show you more in two hours than an interview shows you in two roundsThe 10-80-10 rule and how to use it to stay connected without pulling work back through the middleWhat a definition of done actually looks like in writing, and why naming your re-entry triggers before the project starts changes everythingHow scheduled check-ins replace anxiety-driven re-entry and give the founder's worry somewhere structured to land P.S. What if the reason you're not getting anything done has nothing to do with laziness, lack of discipline, or poor time management? Brain fog is a biological response to overwhelm, and once you understand what is driving it, clearing it becomes a matter of strategy rather than willpower. On Salad with a Side of Fries, host Jenn Trepeck delivers one of her most personal and practical episodes yet, tracing her own experience of brain fog through months of compounding stress and sharing every tool that helped her climb back out. From targeted nutritional supplements like magnesium, ashwagandha, and activated B vitamins, to the biochemical power of novelty, strength training, and social connection, Jenn lays out a morning, midday, and evening framework built around activation, adaptation, and restoration. This is not a surface-level conversation about productivity hacks. This is the science of resilience building applied to real life, with real results. What You Will Learn in This Episode:✅ Why brain fog is not a discipline problem but a biological response to layered overwhelm, and how the gut-brain connection, postbiotics, and targeted antioxidants work together beneath the surface to restore cognitive function and get your brain fully back online.✅ How movement goes far beyond the gym: why changing your walk route, adding intervals, doing squats before a meeting, and keeping light weights nearby are all proven strategies for increasing blood flow and boosting brain energy throughout the day.✅ Why novelty is one of the most powerful and underused tools for mental clarity, and how activities that demand your full attention, from learning a new language to trying a completely unfamiliar experience, actively protect against cognitive decline and sharpen neural connections.✅ How the foods you eat and the ones you avoid directly shape your brain health, why dark leafy greens, blueberries, and beans support memory and slow cognitive decline, and why ultra-processed foods are directly linked to dementia, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast, hosted by Jenn Trepeck, explores real-life wellness and weight-loss topics, debunking myths, misinformation, and flawed science surrounding nutrition and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.TIMESTAMPS:00:00 Clearing brain fog and restoring mental clarity for real life03:07 Recognizing brain fog through observable behaviors: procrastination, lost productivity, inability to focus, and decision fatigue06:07 The three layers of overwhelm fueling mental fatigue: to-do list stress, emotional trauma, and relentless input overload12:09 The wired-but-tired cycle explained: how burnout, late nights, and disrupted sleep quietly destroy focus and brain energy17:51 Shifting from stimulants to solutions: building daily, calm energy with adaptogens, magnesium, and B vitamins for lasting resilience22:15 Morning activation framework: movement, probiotics, vitamin D3, protein-forward meals, and creatine to power up brain energy25:53 Midday adaptation strategies: breaks, deep breathing, single-tasking, and releasing pressure to force productivity31:19 Evening restoration: how CBD gummies, magnesium, and adaptogenic herbs quiet the mind and support deep restorative sleep34:27 Power up your walk and why strength training and resistance work are non-negotiable for brain health, long-term cognitive function, and longevity37:00 Novelty and new experiences spark brain energy and guard against cognitive decline41:10 Brain-supporting foods explained: dark leafy greens, blueberries, beans, and folate-rich choices that slow cognitive decline44:34 Supplement timing strategy: B complex and adaptogenic herbs in the morning and midday, magnesium and ashwagandha at night45:42 The gut-brain connection: how probiotics, postbiotics, fiber, and antioxidants work together to restore cognitive functionKEY TAKEAWAYS:
Presented by Understood.orgYou keep switching direction mid-project, and now nothing in your business is fully built. In this episode, we break down ADHD novelty bias and why new ideas don't just feel exciting. They feel urgent, important, and hard to ignore. You'll hear how this shows up in real businesses. The team is aligned, work has started, and then a new idea comes in. It sounds better, feels right, and within days everything shifts. Six months later, you've got multiple half-built projects and no clear direction. This isn't random. Research shows ADHD brains assign higher reward value to novelty, even when it works against long-term goals. We also look at the other side of it. Why boredom feels almost painful, why sticking with one direction gets harder over time, and how this pattern quietly impacts growth, team focus, and execution. This isn't about lack of discipline. It's about understanding the pattern that's driving your decisions. What We Cover:Why new ideas feel urgent instead of optionalHow novelty bias overrides long-term plansThe “half-built business” pattern many founders fall intoWhy teams follow the founder's attention automaticallyThe link between boredom, disengagement, and switchingWhen novelty is useful and when it starts breaking the businessIf you're enjoying ADHD Skills Lab, you may also enjoy Understood.org's new podcast, Sorry, I Missed This.Listen here: https://lnk.to/sorryimissedthisPS!theadhdskillslab P.S. Presented by Understood.orgBad environments can train ADHD entrepreneurs to second-guess themselves long after they leave those environments behind. Brandon Smith shares how years of struggling in school, standardized testing, and constant negative feedback shaped the way he saw himself, and why finding practical work completely changed how he viewed his ADHD brain. In this conversation, Brandon breaks down how environment affects confidence, self-trust, business growth, and leadership. He also shares lessons from building a construction company, learning to delegate, and realizing that many ADHD business owners stay stuck trying to perfect systems long before they actually need them. What We CoverWhy ADHD people often confuse environment problems with personal failureHow Brandon rebuilt confidence through practical workWhy school experiences still affect ADHD adults years laterThe mindset shift that helped him hire and delegateWhy unfinished systems can still move your business forwardIf you're enjoying ADHD Skills Lab, you may also enjoy Understood.org's new podcast, Sorry, I Missed This.Listen here: https://lnk.to/sorryimissedthisPS!theadhdskillslab P.S. Welcome to the first episode in this week's triple-header of late-breaking clinical trial coverage from Heart Rhythm 2026 in Chicago. In this episode Melissa E. Middeldorp, MPH, PhD from the Digital Education Committee sits down with David H. Birnie, MD and T. Jared Bunch, MD, FHRS to talk through this exciting late breaker. This late-breaking substudy of the ALONE-AF trial presented at Heart Rhythm 2026 evaluated whether discontinuing oral anticoagulation (OAC) after successful atrial fibrillation ablation impacts cognitive function in patients without long-term recurrence. The findings suggest that stopping OAC approximately one year post-ablation does not adversely affect cognitive outcomes, with cognitive scores improving similarly in both discontinuation and continuation groups among patients who remained arrhythmia-free. These results support the potential safety of OAC discontinuation in selected patients, while addressing an important gap in post-ablation management. Learning Objectives Understand the clinical rationale and current uncertainty surrounding continuation versus discontinuation of oral anticoagulation after successful AF ablation. Evaluate the impact of anticoagulation discontinuation on cognitive function in patients without recurrent atrial fibrillation. Apply emerging evidence from ALONE-AF and related studies to inform individualized decision-making on long-term anticoagulation management post-ablation. Podcast Contributors Melissa E. Presented by Understood.orgYou build a new system, follow it for a few days, then quietly stop using it.Craig Ballantyne has coached high performers across multiple industries and his approach focuses on building systems that survive real life, not perfect conditions. This conversation looks at why most systems fail for ADHD brains. Craig explains how self-awareness, environment control, and honest constraints matter more than motivation. You will leave with a different way to think about systems that actually hold when your brain resists structure. What We CoverWhy most systems fail when they rely on motivationHow to design systems based on how you actually behaveThe role of environment in making systems stickWhy honesty about how you learn changes everythingHow to remove friction instead of adding more structureIf you're enjoying ADHD Skills Lab, you may also enjoy Understood.org's new podcast, Sorry, I Missed This.Listen here: https://lnk.to/sorryimissedthisPS!theadhdskillslabConnect with Craig: Craig Ballantyne Coaching: https://craigballantyne.com/Instagram: @ realcraigballantyne P.S. Click the link for DATES, DETAILS, and FAQs! In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling break down a promising randomized controlled trial exploring how a simple time-restricted eating window can meaningfully improve cognitive function in older adults with mild cognitive impairment — and what that means for everyone's long-term brain health. The hosts connect the dots between blood sugar regulation, insulin balance, and the growing body of research linking metabolic dysfunction to dementia and Alzheimer's, making a compelling case for why fasting is about far more than the number on the scale. They walk through the key mechanisms behind fasting's brain-protective effects — including circadian alignment, reduced neuroinflammation, improved insulin signaling, and the promotion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor — and why eating earlier in the day may be one of the most underrated levers anyone can pull. Listeners caring for aging loved ones will find practical, immediately actionable strategies for shifting meal timing and building a brain-supportive environment, even in small ways. The episode closes with a powerful reminder that building a consistent foundational fasting lifestyle today — anchored by protein, quality sleep, and earlier eating windows — is one of the most proactive investments anyone can make in their cognitive future. In this episode of Revolution Health Radio, Chris Kresser is joined by neuroscientist and physician Dr. Tommy Wood to explore how cognitive function can be preserved—and even enhanced—as we age. Dr. Wood challenges outdated ideas about inevitable cognitive decline and reframes dementia as a largely preventable, multifactorial condition. The conversation covers the historical roots of Alzheimer's disease, why “one-size-fits-all” drug approaches have failed, and how lifestyle, environment, and brain use interact to shape long-term brain health. Dr. Wood introduces his 3S model of brain health, explains why retirement may be a mismatch for brain biology, and breaks down the roles of exercise, nutrition, sleep, and cognitively demanding activities in building lifelong cognitive resilience.
