Royal historian and author Tracy Borman returns to The Gilded Gentleman following her appearance on Crown & Scepter: The Coronation Show last year.  Tracy is a noted historian and a frequent guest and commentator on the BBC as well as many documentaries and programs internationally.   Tracy's most recent book "Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth I: The Mother and Daughter That Changed History" serves as the basis for this episode, along with Tracy's insights on the mother daughter relationships in the lives of two modern monarchs - Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II.  Mother daughter relationships can be loving, supportive and at times challenging.  In this episode, Tracy Borman discusses several royal mother/daughter relationships that may have changed history.   Elizabeth I was barely three years old when her father Henry VIII ordered her mother's execution for failing to provide a royal male heir.  Tracy's revelatory new research and insight explains just how Elizabeth honored, and even emulated her mother throughout her own long reign and how she continued to dispel myths that had been created by a malicious court. Like Elizabeth I, neither Queen Victoria nor Queen Elizabeth II ever thought that they would be queens themselves and Tracy offers additional in-depth insight as to how these women - along with their own mothers influenced the throne.

Have you ever wondered if your “quirks” might actually be manifested trauma? Or more like…that they probably ARE? Victoria Dozer was curious about her mom's pretty typical Jewish-mom-quirk of stashing huge amounts of things, like dishes and toilet paper--stuff that's useful in principle, but that you probably don't need 20 of--and uncovered that this behavior, inherited and then passed down to Victoria, is a legacy her mom inherited from her Holocaust-survivor father. She nicknamed the habit Holocaust hoarding, and went down a path of exploration; how does the trauma of our elders and ancestors affect our lives each day? And how do we honor them, their struggles and legacies, while working to see it for what it is, and turn towards healing without betraying their suffering? Jews are certainly not the only people who have been targets of genocide throughout their history, and it's so ingrained in Jewish identity that many don't even think about it consciously, but it felt very important to explore how such deeply ingrained existential fear can show up in Jewish life, including in reactions to world events. Victoria's approach in her article for Hey Alma, and our conversation, compassionately recognizes some very Jewish things that might be inherited trauma. She explores accepting the pain of our past without letting it define us, or be an unconscious force shaping our reactions, futures, and the lives of those around us. Victoria is also a planetary scientist, and you will be grateful for her thoughtful perspectives on the weight of generational trauma, hoarding vs environmentalism, and how to greet our own and others' trauma with loving acceptance, and heal without discarding a legacy we treasure. GLOSSARY:M.O.T.: Short for “Member of the Tribe,” a tongue in cheek term Jewish people sometimes use for one another, especially when meeting for the first time, i.e. “Oh hey! Another M.O.T.!”HSOs: Holocaust Survivor Offspring as referred to in medical literature researching generational trauma.Eugenics: The misappropriation and inaccurate application of scientific theories such as Darwin's theory of evolution to justify a belief in the genetic superiority of one race or people over another, ultimately leading to attempts to exterminate entire races and types of people, including the Jews by the Nazis, and mentally ill or otherwise neurodivergent populations in the United States.Tu BiShvat: See previous episode for a whole TuBishvat lesson! “Do not destroy”: “bal tashchit” in Hebrew, the principle stems from the idea that the earth belongs to God and careful stewardship of it is therefore our responsibility. Tikkun Olam: “world repair,” is a concept that all human beings are responsible for one another and the world, and for repairing harm and damage through their actions, big or small.Find Hey Alma on Instagram!Support the showLike the show? This was a very special episode of the podcast, we recorded it with two mothers and two daughters. I was one of the mothers with my daughter, Jennifer Maneely.  Christine Dikson joined with her daughter, Lauren Martinson.  Mothers and daughters have complicated relationships.  In this conversation, we got into some of the things that make the relationship so complicated. We also talked about our favorite memories. This conversation was wide ranging. It was deep, it was fun. And I'm guessing it won't be our last

Our mothers were the first ones who met our needs and were our first attachment figure. Their goal was to keep us safe and healthy, and food is interwoven into that.” – Judith Ruskay Rabinor   “When the mothering person is not attuned enough – is not feeding the child when the child is hungry, holding that child when the child needs to be held, helping that child fall asleep when they need sleep, the child doesn't develop the ability to soothe themselves and they develop an insecure attachment to the mother. They're waiting always for somebody else to do it for them.” – Judith Ruskay Rabinor   “When people are not secure, they generally fail to develop other ways to soothe themselves.” – Judith Ruskay Rabinor   “Part of what's really, really important… is gathering details. When did it start? What else was going on? The relationships we have with our mothers is just….complicated. And believe it or not, the book “I'm Glad my Mom Died” has been high on the New York Times bestseller list since it was released. Whoo. Our mothers gave us so much. So much good and so much generational baggage inadvertently passed down from our mothers' mothers and we can't help but pass it on. So I'm doing something a little different today. I lost my mother a year and a half ago and I connected with Kris Jones, who just recently lost hers. We thought we'd have an honest conversation about our elaborately tangled connections with our moms and the legacy we hope to leave as we continue to screw up our kids…oops, I mean do our very best to improve. I was really struck with how deeply the conversations around weight, beauty, and money were so embedded in her hardwiring. Imagine a world where mothers were given sacred space to welcome their daughters intentionally into their coming of age rite of passage. And where girls were welcomed into circle with other mothers and daughters to find deep wisdom, loving support and a chance to experience true sisterhood all before their 13th birthday. There is a place on Earth: it's called the Seeding Wisdom journey held annually in the Illawarra (NSW) by wise women Arahni Lion and Jo Rockendorfer. Arahni and Jo share the story of why and how they created this potent experience, what happens within the journey, and why this kind of initiatory journey is needed now, more than ever. If you've ever wished you were more supported, more seen and heard, more understood and respected in your own maiden years, this is a truly special way of healing that part of you, and to give your child the best start to a conscious, empowered, embodied and connected womanhood. I know that when my daughters are of age, we will be taking the journey together, one by one. Listen into this conversation to hear Arahni and Jo sharing their journey to hosting the Seeding Wisdom journey and:what mothers and daughters need at this time of their lives, exactly what the journey entails and what happens in a gathering, why we need spaces for mothers to reclaim their own menarche experiences before they can support their children, what ancestral healing of the red thread is, what Arahni and Jo have learnt from facilitating such a journey. The 2023 Journey is about to begin, and there is an open day coming up on 29th Jan. Today on our show, we're talking about beginnings and endings. What is an effective way to begin a story and a satisfying way to end? The story we bring you on this episode is an amazing example of how to start with appropriate grounding and how to land/end the essay like a gymnast. The narrator isn't just a beginning and ending genius, she also uses lingo associated with her theme. This style is effective, because the reader feels more drawn in. Another example of that same type of inclusive linguistic style was discussed on Episode 110: How to Write About Death: Use an Obsession. Jackie Ashton told the story of her best friend's cancer by using the situation of a Golden State Warriors obsession and basketball lingo throughout. Shawna Kenney submitted the essay you will hear today and we were blown away. Her story is called Words with Mom.Shawna Kenney is the author of four books, the latest being Live at the Safari Club: A History of HarDCore Punk in the Nation's Capital 1988-1998. -How can loving baby girls turn into codependent daughters with their mothers? -What messages do we get from our mothers that lead us to be passive, subservient, and conflict-avoidant? -What are the initial steps we can take to heal our relationship with our mothers?   Welcome to Episode 93! This week, we are graced with the presences of Dr. Judith Rabinor, psychologist and author of the book, The Girl in the Red Boots: Making Peace with My Mother. Dr. Rabinor talks with me about what codependency between a mother and a daughter looks like, how it starts, and what we can do to start to break the patterns of codependency we have with our moms. You'll hear me share quotes from Dr. Rabinor's book and have her expand on how we go from a healthy dependency in our childhood to an unhealthy codependency with our mothers as young women. We conclude with ways for you to start knowing and expressing your own thoughts and needs. It's a must-listen!   More on this episode's guest: Judy is a clinical psychologist, an author and a writing coach who teaches on line. This can be with a partner, a parent, a boss, a friend, etc.    We then dive into Dr. Rabinor's book, The Girl in the Red Boots: Healing My Relationship With My Mother. I read the following quotes and then have Dr. Rabninor expand on related questions: Page 27: My early programming…is what I learned as a small child who yearned for my mother's love and approval. Driven to please her, I absorbed and internalized her essence. Unconsciously, a part of me was still devoted to the voice in my head whispering, “Mother knows best.” What does it look like to absorb and interlize our mother's essence? How do we lose our voices with our mothers when it comes to asserting our needs, disappointments, frustrations? Page 66: …she had betrayed me, her daughter. She had pulled me in to the middle of her drama by asking me to keep a secret [from my husband and brother]. I should have said all of this to her, and I should have asked her why she had to tell me. I should have reminded her that I had just lost my father and was in mourning. I wish I had told her that her happiness about her affair, her comfort…brought me neither happiness or comfort…But I said none of those things. I don't really know why I didn't have a voice…”  Do experiences like this teach us daughters to prioritize the needs of our mothers (stop crying, listen to my heartbreak story) over ourselves (grieve a friendship, process the rejection)? What does that do for our other relationships? Page 104: …the pain of seventh grade wasn't only about being rejected by the mean girls. It was also about feeling isolated by and disconnected from my mother…”This really isn't a big deal!” she said. “No more crying, Judy. And if you think losing your best friend hurts, just wait until you lose a boyfriend.” A detailed narrative followed as my mother described her heartbreak when her first boyfriend dumped her….”Was there something wrong with me that I was suffering so much and making a big deal about something unimportant?” How do we avoid mother blaming while working through our codependency? Page 138: Marcy had been working with me in therapy for six months when I began to worry she might get suck in a cycle of mother blaming.  Where do we start with developing this skill? Page 160: Many women have been trained to serve others and have trouble knowing and expressing their own wants and needs. Articulating one's “wants” is a still that takes practice and a willingness to risk challenging the givens and facting the unknown?   We conclude with Dr. Rabninor sharing with us about ways we can heal our relationship with our mothers (providing her with context, practicing self-compassion and mother-compassion, and working through the anger/grief/depression). She also describes how we can break the patterns of codependency in our current relationships: become aware if we are being codependent, ask ourselves “What am I afraid to say?,” and then start to have conversations to tolerate dissension/conflict/disagreement.   Questions for you: What came up for you as you heard Dr. Rabinor's definition of codependency?  How have you internalized and absorbed your mother's opinions/beliefs/attitudes? And how may that no longer be serving you? Do you have a voice when it comes to asserting your feelings/wants/needs with your mother? What do you imagine would happen if you spoke up for yourself? What experiences from your past can you recal where you put the needs and comfort of your mother above your own? How does that impact you in your current relationships? Do you mother-blame? Is there anger/grief/sadness towards your relationship with your mother that you need to work through? How have you been trained to serve others? And what can you do to start developing the skill of being aware and sharing your needs with others?   Thank you for coming on Dr. Rabinor!    Get Judy's mini book here: https://judithruskayrabinorphd.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Rabinor-Mothers-Daughters.pdf   Thanks for listening!  PLEASE: Rate.  Review. 'Have faith' is a phrase we hear all the time. But what does it actually look like to live it out? Join us as our guest examines the lives of biblical women to see how God's plans can turn our worlds upside down. She will explain the intimate connection between faith and family--and how God's unexpected agenda can redefine the way we think about family. Not all of these mothers and daughters in the Bible were paragons of virtue. Like us, they were human beings who faltered and struggled to do their best. While some heard God's voice, others chose their own paths. Through the lens of their imperfections, we can see how God used their stories to bring about His divine plans. He's still doing the same work in our lives today.
