Welcome to March 18th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate awkward slips and sloppy sandwiches. In 2011, Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey, Spain's national pro soccer competition. For Spanish teams, this is on par with the Big Game or World Series. So of course fans in Madrid came out in massive numbers to celebrate. As the victory parade rolled through the city, players waved and took turns showing off the trophy. Until it got to defenseman Sergio Ramos. Who dropped it. Ramos was standing on top of a bus, holding the trophy overhead. It slipped from his hands and it crashed to the ground. Which was bad enough, but then the bus ran over it. Oops. On National Awkward Moments Day, embrace the unintended faux pas of life and be grateful that tens of millions aren't watching you do it. A version of the sloppy joe was served at a greasy spoon diner in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1920s. They called it the steamed hamburger, which was ground beef served loose on a bun with grilled onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard. But it was a Key West bar that named this loose meat sandwich. For this we can thank none other than Ernest Hemingway, who encouraged the bar owner to rename the place after Joe, a sloppy Havana bar keeper. Joe's place in Cuba also served a loose meat sandwich, but the American owner knew a good name when she saw it. Today more than 50,000 sandwiches are sold each year at the Sloppy Joe's bar in Key West, Florida. Of course you can always whip one up at home on National Sloppy Joe Day. No shoes, no shirt, no problem. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Many people in our community are concerned about how their parents are not investing and have no retirement plan. What makes this even more frustrating is not know whether as an immigrant their parents are even allowed to invest. When your parents have no retirement plan, you know you and/or your siblings likely will be the one who have to bear the consequences. Almost all of our Immigrant Finance School™ students, for example, are the retirement plan for their parents. For many families it's often unspoken, and never discussed, but everyone knows what the future will look like when their parents have no retirement plan. This is not something you want to avoid: planning in advance will only make things easier in the future. If this is you, one of the best things you can do to lessen the burden is to become the leader on finances in your family and teach your parents how to start investing for retirement. Do what you can today to learn the rules of the money game and become a confident investor. And if your parents are open to learning about investing on their own too, even better. For Spanish-only speaking parents, we have Escuela de Finanzas de Inmigrantes™ - a version of our signature Immigrant Finance School™ program in Spanish - available for pre-sale at a discount while we complete translation. Real English Conversations Podcast - Listen to English Conversation Lessons
This is the final part of thsi special 3-part series where you are going to learn HOW to accelerate your English learning to reach your English goals faster in 2022. Get the ALL the worksheets, audio lessons, and transcription for this special training podcast series here: https://realenglishconversations.com/email/deliberate-practice/ About this episode... So what was the BIGGEST mistake I made that kept me stuck as a beginner for so long? It wasn't only because I was doing Naive Practice... But it was also because I was following the 'common' suggestions and ideas about HOW to learn a language, such as: "Just listen to lots of audio" "Watch movies with subtitles" "Take a language course" "Go to a Spanish speaking country. You'll learn fast!" Trust me, I tried ALL of them.... Multiple times. It seemed like these ideas worked for everyone else, but they weren't working for me. I thought, “Maybe I'm just bad at learning languages”. And at one point, I almost gave up. It wasn't until I started think about how I usually learn new skills that I realized, it's a simple 2-step method: Step 1: Think about the skill I want to be able to do. Step 2: Think of ways to learn and practice it. For Spanish, I wanted to be able to: > Speak with real people and understand them But when I looked at what I was actually doing > Memorizing random words and doing grammar drills Wait a minute… How are grammar drills helping my speaking? Or listening? Oops. They don't. And what type of words am I learning? …Words from grammar lessons. Are those the words used in everyday communication? Nope. Definitely not. This helped me realize, I was doing the wrong activities for the skills I needed. My next mission: Find a better way to practice speaking and listening. And this brought me to the ‘trial and error' part of my learning where I spent the next two years experimenting with different ideas. Although most of my ideas were complete failures… … Eventually I found the key methods that UNLOCKED my language skills and allowed me to make rapid progress. Like really rapid. I got up to an advanced level within 1 year. Although my story is ‘interesting' because it explains HOW I figured out how to reach fluency. My story is also the LONG and SLOW WAY. … And I don't recommend it. Because there is a MUCH faster way. In today's podcast, I want to share the concept of DELIBERATE PRACTICE which builds on the concept of Purposeful Practice. Without doubt, Deliberate Practice is the fast-track to fluency. And it's a method that can easily increase the speed you learn by 3x. >> Get the worksheets, audio downloads, and transcription for this ALL the lessons from this special training podcast series here: https://realenglishconversations.com/email/deliberate-practice/ Get on the Fast-Track to Fluency with our Special Offer HERE: https://realenglishconversations.com/memberships/member-plans/fluency-programs/ny-special-offer/

On Wednesday episodes, I share leadership beliefs and unlabel terminology. I invite guests to share their expertise about small or big acts of leadership. In Episode 53, Ronald Graves discusses traditional leadership assumptions that are misguided and harmful. In Nine Practices of 21st Century Leadership, you can read about thirteen of such assumptions. Ronald Takes on assumptions 11-13. 00:00 Prologue Ronald has more than 35 years of business consulting experience, in which he served in leadership roles for 20 years. He is well versed in organizational performance improvement and leadership, and he is a certified coach. For the past year, Ronald has coached me as I work to refuel my entrepreneurial spirit! 02:01 Part 1: Recognition Is a Formal Process Some traditional-thinking leaders believe that recognition isn't necessary except when the organization requires formal acknowledgment. Others believe that employees already know their value. Ronald explains why these beliefs hurt employee engagement. 08:33 Part 2: Leadership Requires Little or No Training Because of initial success, some leaders believe that they have mastered leadership. To them, leadership is a simple concept and requires no ongoing training. Ronald critiques this perspective. 16:30 Part 3: Leaders know How Effective Their Leadership Is Some leaders believe that their leadership is self-apparent and effective. Ronald explains what might cause someone to believe this, and _________________________________ How You Can Support the Show Unlabeled Leadership is a free service for people to learn about leadership. Welcome back to Light Body Radio! In this week”s episode I am joined by Stephanie May, LMT, Reiki Master to discuss the victim state of mind and taking control of your mental health. We are all living through unprecedented times for sure! But that does not mean that we should allow ourselves to be victimized. Being the victim is a challenge that we must all face at some point in our lives, and actually will face multiple times throughout our lives. But there is a way you can perceive and move through those challenging times with empowerment and mindfulness. That’s what Stephanie and I wanted to bring you today, the tools to be empowered, to be the driver of your own mental state. You have the power to choose what and how you think and feel. You are not weak. You are not alone. I also wrote a blog about this back in March of this year right as COVID was starting to take off in the US. How timely?! Definitely check that out for tools to support mental health and self-care. If you or someone you love are in crisis, you are not alone! Please reach out and get help. 2020 Census count is underway and the data will determine how much money and power comes to each community. Yet eastern Kentuckians have been slow to respond. Rachelle Seger from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, KY State Rep. Angie Hatton, and the US Census Bureau's Michelle Elison talk about why it is so important to fill out those forms and be counted, especially those of us living in Central Appalachia. The data collected through the census determines funding for things like school lunches, educational programs, and improvements to roads and bridges. Census data is used to determine federal disaster relief, hospital funding, Medicare, Medicaid, and support for medical clinics like Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation in eastern Kentucky. It is used for planning and preparation for natural disasters and epidemics such as COVID-19. The Census Bureau has delayed in-person outreach efforts making it more important than ever to self report. The 2020 census can be completed online at my2020census.gov, or by calling 844-330-2020. For Spanish call 844-468-2020. And of course you can fill out the paper form and return it post paid in the mail. It is not too late to be counted.

And what is the role of your child’s pediatrician in monitoring not only your child’s physical health but also things like language development and social emotional behavior? Pediatrician Sylvia Sekhon represents Help Me Grow in this week’s Mom Enough show to help you understand developmental screening, assessment and intervention services that are available to help your child live and learn as well as possible.
