My partner in crime and host of the BOP en Español Series, Miguel Avila, joins me to talk about Behavior Analysis in Spanish-speaking cultures. In addition to his day job with Essential for Living, Miguel has been hard at work, and recorded over 10 Spanish language podcasts for Behavioral Observations listeners. So in this episode, which we of course conduct in English because my Spanish did not progress past my Freshman year of college, I turn the tables and interview Miguel for a change. We talk about his experience as an immigrant to the US, what constitutes "Spanglish," how he encountered Behavior Analysis, and how he ended up at Essential for Living, leading the efforts to translate those materials into Spanish. We then broaden the discussion to talk about where Behavior Analysis stands in various Spanish-speaking countries. As you'll hear in the podcast, Miguel has spent time in many of these places in Latin America and Europe, so while he humbly claims to not be the ultimate authority on these matters, he certainly has gained lots of hands-on experience in these settings. A conversation like this would not be complete if we didn't talk about efforts to provide training and consumer protections via regulatory institutions in these countries. In doing so, we touch on organizations including QABA, IBAO, LABA, ABA España, ABAI SIG Español, OMPAC, and more. Long story short, there's a lot to do in terms of supporting the profession of Behavior Analysis in these international contexts. In fact, Miguel will be speaking at the upcoming Puerto Rico ABA 2024 conference coming up in October. Here are some links to the topics we discussed: Essential for Living PCMA Winston Behavioral Solutions Session 200 of the BOP (Miguel wrote and read the intro) Elcoro, at al (2024). Ana Nubia Duin is originally from Hidalgo, Mexico. She moved to the United States when she was 14 years old, and graduated from Sylmar High School in California in 1991. Following graduation, she moved to Arkansas and began her career in radio. In 1999, Ana moved to Kansas City, where she helped open the first 24-hour Spanish radio Station, La Zeta. Here, she met her husband of 22 years, Yvan. In 2015, Ana and her husband had the idea to open their own radio station, and La Mega KC was born. Ana and her husband have 3 amazing daughters, Dominique, Yvanna and Yvanka.La Mega has become a staple in the Latino community, serving as a key source for information. In 2023, Ana and her team at La Mega implemented a new monthly segment that features a Hope House advocate and discussions about domestic violence in the Latino community. Ana is an advocate for domestic violence survivors and believes no person, woman, man, or child, should be someone else's victim. She is proud to support Hope House and victims of domestic violence.Viviana Gutierrez is a Mexican-born immigrant who came to the United States at the age of 5. She is very passionate about working with the Hispanic community, having witnessed domestic violence being dismissed and labeled as “machismo culture.” Fortunately, her parents taught her otherwise. They instilled in her the belief that just because something is considered "normal," it does not make it okay. Viviana now applies this same principle in her efforts to educate the Spanish-speaking community about domestic violence. By joining forces with La Mega, collaborating with existing community partners, and working with local schools, she aims to reach the Spanish-speaking population and provide them with crucial information. Her hope is to empower individuals to leave abusive relationships and seek help when needed.Find La Mega KC on Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok: @lamegakc

Fiona Smith, a PhD student at the Cizik School of Nursing at UTHealth Houston and Stroke Coordinator at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, recently joined the Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases Stroke Busters podcast to discuss her research on stroke awareness within the Spanish-speaking community. Smith's passion for improving stroke care and reducing disparities in healthcare access has driven her to focus on the cultural factors that influence care-seeking behavior among Spanish speakers. Smith highlighted the importance of the RAPIDO acronym, a Spanish-language tool designed to help individuals recognize the signs of stroke and take action. RAPIDO, which translates to "fast" in English, stands for: R: Rostro caído (fallen face) A: Afectación de equilibrio (balance impairment) P: Pérdida de fuerza en los brazos (weakness in the arms) I: Impedimento visual (visual impairment) D: Dificultad para hablar (difficulty speaking) O: Obtener ayuda (obtain help) Smith emphasized that while the RAPIDO acronym is an essential tool for stroke recognition, it is equally important to understand the cultural factors that may influence an individual's decision to seek care. Her current research focuses on identifying these variables and developing strategies to ensure that everyone seeks care as quickly as possible when experiencing stroke symptoms. Smith also stressed the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals, including nurses, doctors, therapists, and technologists, in making significant changes to improve stroke care in the community. She encourages healthcare professionals and researchers passionate about addressing cultural barriers to find mentors and advisors who can provide guidance and support in pursuing their research goals. Fiona Smith's dedication to improving stroke awareness and care within the Spanish-speaking community serves as an inspiration to healthcare professionals and researchers alike. Her work highlights the importance of understanding and addressing cultural factors in healthcare delivery and the power of community engagement in promoting better health outcomes for all.
