Intentional Living with Tanya Hale

Leaning into relationships is the process of choosing the relationship over everything else, including our fears and insecurities. It can feel super scary because it requires vulnerability and openness, and this can mean that we may need to courage up and step into discomfort. Because when things in a relationship get tough, it can be super easy to lean out to protect our point of view, our struggling sense of self, and our ego. But leaning out increases the distance and drives disconnect. If we want meaningful, connected, and intimate relationships, we have to have the courage to lean in. Moving into comparison and judgment is such a normal, human thing to do. And we can learn to harness these tendencies to create more of the kind, loving, compassionate relationships we want. Learning to lean into curiosity is a powerful tool to help us stop one-upping and one-downing in our relationships and learn instead to accept and appreciate others as our equals, creating more genuine, deep, and emotionally intimate connections. Hello to you listening in Schaumburg, Illinois! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. One summer afternoon Nasruddin was relaxing under a massive walnut tree. He looks up at the tiny walnuts hanging above him and then to a nearby garden patch of ripe watermelons growing on small vines. Nasruddin looks up to the sky and says, “Lord, your creation is wonderful, but sometimes illogical. Why would you hang tiny nuts on a giant tree, and huge melons on a thin, frail vine?" Just then, a walnut falls from the branches and hits him squarely on the head. Nasruddin says, “Forgive my desire to be right. If you had hung watermelons on this tree, I would be dead!" Maybe like me you've had practice with being a know-it-all, all the time. Let's face it: the need to be right is exhausting! So, why do we cling to being right? Culture, schooling, religion, family, and community all play a part in teaching us that being right is all about being perfect and perfect is desirable. But what has perfect ever done for you? Over time I've come face-to-face with this: I don't really know as much as I think I do. I concede to watermelons on the ground and walnuts in a tree. Story Prompt: Think of a time when you were okay to let go of the need to be right, to know it all, have it all, and be it all. What happened next? Write that story and share it out loud! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! Matt Kaplan is the science correspondent at The Economist and also the author of a number of books. His latest work is I Told You So!: Scientists Who Were Ridiculed, Exiled, and Imprisoned for Being Right. Greg and Matt discuss how Matt chose science journalism over academia, the value of being a generalist, and how journalists can cross-pollinate ideas from others. They also discuss academic silos, pecking orders, and how fear, funding pressures, and ego create sticky consensuses that punish deviants, and linking historic cases to modern parallels.  Matt argues that incremental NIH/NSF funding discourages bold leaps compared with HHMI-style risk-taking, calls for better incentives for peer review and career transitions for senior scientists, and recounts a case in which a dissenting scientist was attacked to the point that they left the field. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.* Episode Quotes: When scientific silos break, innovation happens 09:31: There was a medical conference at the same hotel where this marine biologist was presenting, and one of the surgeons at the medical conference walked by and listened and talked to the marine biologist afterwards and said, “Hey, are you telling me that that spit will hold together stuff in a salty environment?” And the biologist said, “Well, yeah, it's in the ocean.” And the surgeon went, “‘Cause we have really serious problems getting glue that works in the saline environment of a bloody surgery table because your blood is salty, and glues don't work, and we can't put bones together with bolts when the bones are fragments.” So together, they ultimately collaborated and created a glue from the sandcastle worm that's now used in surgery tables around the world. And it was just my favorite word in the world: serendipity. Total serendipity. Why institutions resist new ideas 14:18: I think uncertainty and fear make us cling to the things that we know. And the more uncomfortable we are with change, the more we cling like a security blanket to the consensus. Big problems require bigger risks 31:13: I don't think we do enough of the Howard Hughes-type stuff because we got some pretty big problems. I mean, feeding eight billion people, dealing with climate change, generating enough power to have all of the nations of the world have electricity and refrigeration. We can all come together and say refrigeration is probably pretty important. Defeating pandemics. We really have a lot of stuff that needs to be done, and that's not going to get done if we keep taking baby steps. We've got really big problems, and to do that, we need to get comfortable with failure real fast, and we currently are just not accepting it. What if the most famous phrase in business is actually destroying your shop from the inside out? In this episode of Talkin' Shop with ShopSabre, Brandon Bombardo and Nick Peters tear apart the myth that the customer is always right and rebuild it into something that actually works for real business owners. If you run a CNC shop, a fabrication business, or any kind of service operation, you already know the truth: not every customer is right, and bending to every demand is a fast track to burnout, quality issues, and losing your best employees. Brandon witnessed an explosive customer meltdown in a retail store and it sparked a deep conversation about where this phrase actually came from, why it was never meant to be taken literally, and how misusing it creates chaos in your operation. This episode gets real about the dangers of letting customers run your business, why your team deserves to be protected, and how the strongest companies set boundaries without losing the relationships that matter most. You are going to walk away from this one with a completely different perspective on customer service. Brandon and Nick break down how to listen without surrendering your standards, how to know when it is time to walk away from the wrong customer, and why the businesses that say no strategically are the ones that last. They also dive into setting honest expectations, the ripple effect of one bad customer relationship on your entire team, and the mindset shift every shop owner needs to hear right now. This is not some corporate customer service lecture. This is raw, real talk from guys who live it every single day in the manufacturing world. Whether you are running a one-man shop or managing a growing team, the lessons in this episode will change how you approach every customer interaction moving forward. Being right feels amazing for a reason: your brain rewards it. That quick dopamine hit can turn a capable leader into a stubborn one without them even noticing. I unpack how the “need to be right” sneaks into everyday leadership, especially when we're under pressure to be decisive, credible, and fast. If you care about leadership development, critical thinking, and better decision making, this conversation is a practical mirror. We walk through five specific pitfalls that show up when certainty takes the wheel: confirmation bias (and selective listening), reduced intellectual humility, escalation of commitment once you've said something out loud, defensive communication that ruins collaboration, and premature closure that confuses speed with quality. I also share a simple way to compare dopamine-driven habits with healthier thinking habits, like curiosity over certainty, adaptability over defensiveness, learning orientation over ego protection, and truth seeking over winning. To land the lesson, I tell the tragic story of Ignay Semmelweiss, a physician who urged doctors to wash their hands and was shunned for it, with devastating consequences. It's a reminder that righteousness, groupthink, and ego can be as dangerous as any technical mistake. If you want to lead teams that speak up, think deeper, and solve better problems together, hit play, then subscribe, share this with a leader you respect, and leave a review so more people can find the show.Join our free masterclass The Dopamine of Being Right on June 2nd at 1pm CST. Want to live longer, sleep better, and feel sharper? Start walking. Dr. Courtney Conley is here to show you how to make every step pay compound interest.Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1322What We Discuss with Courtney Conley:Walking isn't optional cardio you bolt onto your week — it's a core biological input on par with breathing and sleeping. Courtney Conley argues we've engineered it out of daily life, with the average person logging just 4,700 steps a day, running what amounts to a slow systems failure on the body. The longevity sweet spot is 7,000 to 8,000 steps per day, not the famous 10,000 — that number was literally a marketing campaign for a Japanese pedometer during the Tokyo Olympics, with zero science behind it. Past 10,000 to 12,000 steps, the benefits plateau hard.A 10 to 15 minute walk within 30 minutes of eating is a metabolic cheat code. Muscle contraction pulls glucose out of your bloodstream alongside the pancreas — sit after a meal and you're only using half your blood-sugar regulation system, which is brutal news for anyone with insulin resistance.Your toes are a longevity marker hiding in plain sight. Toe strength declines before grip strength, correlates with glucose levels, and predicts falls as you age — and the foot loses sensitivity so dramatically that by age 80 it takes 75% more pressure to stimulate the same sensory receptors as it did at 50.Start with a five-minute "micro walk" — that's roughly 500 steps, and for sedentary folks under 2,500 daily steps, that tiny addition meaningfully decreases all-cause mortality. Pair it with a post-meal walk and a "relationship walk" with a spouse, kid, or friend, and you've stacked metabolic, mental health, and social benefits into one ridiculously simple habit. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! What if we touched base with love first? Slowing down to validate feelings, question our need to be right, and notice resistance to different processes rewires how we show up. Loving first doesn't mean ignoring issues; it means solving them from a place of compassion, which creates cleaner, more sustainable outcomes. Science progresses through breakthrough discoveries, but behind many of the field's greatest advancements lies a darker history of scientific dysfunction—hostile competition, information hoarding, and criticism that has silenced revolutionary thinkers. From Alexander Gordon being forced to flee Aberdeen after proving doctors spread deadly infections, to Ignaz Semmelweis being fired and exiled for insisting doctors wash their hands between autopsies and deliveries, brilliant scientists have paid devastating personal prices for challenging medical orthodoxies. The pattern repeats across centuries: Pierre Louis was attacked for using statistics to prove bloodletting was useless, Joseph Lister faced ridicule for suggesting "invisible germs" caused infections, and Jean Toussaint suffered a nervous breakdown after Louis Pasteur appropriated his anthrax vaccine discovery. These cautionary tales reveal how the scientific community often becomes so attached to established paradigms that it rejects—or even destroys—those who dare to question consensus, no matter how strong their evidence. Today's guest is Matt Kaplan, author of “I Told You So!: Scientists Who Were Ridiculed, Exiled, and Imprisoned for Being Right.” He has spent two decades observing dysfunction across all scientific disciplines and now calls for fundamental reform in his book "I Told You So!" He argues that personality and social connections are weighted too heavily over actual ideas and skill, with good scientists losing grants and promotions simply because they lack charisma or fail to make the right political connections. Kaplan explores how even paleontology has its bullies, pointing to cases like Alison Moyer's discovery of organic material in dinosaur bones being met with hostility for challenging established orthodoxies. Through these stories of scientists who were ultimately vindicated—from Gordon's germ theory to Semmelweis's handwashing protocols—we see how science advances faster when contrarians are allowed to have their say and when the community prioritizes rigorous debate over comfortable consensus.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why do some world-changing ideas get ignored, attacked, or buried for years before anyone takes them seriously? Michael Shermer sits down with The Economist science correspondent Matt Kaplan to discuss the scientists who got there first and paid the price. They talk about why institutions resist new ideas, why careers can depend on defending the status quo, and why being right is often not enough. They discuss figures like Katalin Karikó, whose work on mRNA was dismissed long before it helped transform modern medicine, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, who faced fierce backlash for arguing that doctors themselves were spreading deadly infections. This is a fascinating look at what happens when evidence collides with ego, reputation, and scientific orthodoxy. It's also a conversation about truth, status, intellectual courage, and the deeply human side of science. Matt Kaplan is a science correspondent at The Economist. He has written about everything from paleontology and parasites to virology and viticulture over the course of two decades. His new book is I Told You So! Matt Kaplan is a science correspondent at the Economist and author of the new book I Told You So!: Scientists Who Were Ridiculed, Exiled, and Imprisoned for Being Right in which he shares the stories of researchers—from Darwin to Pasteur to modern Nobel Prize winners—who had to fight for their revolutionary ideas to be accepted. "But Paul…” you might say. "This sounds very interesting, but how does it fit into the conversations here on Reasonably Happy?” Good question! It's because I like contrarians and truth-seekers. I worry about prevailing power structures or narratives that restrict innovation, progress, free markets, and personal liberty, whether those obstacles be bureaucracy, fascism, religion, or political correctness. And perhaps by pondering these historical examples, we'll be less likely to repeat past mistakes. Over the last two decades, Matt has written about everything from paleontology and parasites to virology and viticulture. In addition to the Economist, his writing has appeared in National Geographic,  Nature, and the New York Times. He completed a thesis in Paleontology at Berkeley, and one in science journalism at Imperial College, London. In 2014 he was awarded a Knight Fellowship to study at MIT and Harvard. Born in California, he lives in England.    Please rate and review Reasonably Happy HERE  (DO IT!)    Read Paul's Substack newsletter HERE  Buy Matt's book, I Told You So! here.

EMPOWERING THE THIRD DAY ECCLESIA
THE DANGER OF SPIRITUAL COMPARISON AND SUPERIORITY: DYNAMICS OF SPIRITUAL PROTOCOL..

EMPOWERING THE THIRD DAY ECCLESIA

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2026 121:56

The Danger of Spiritual Comparison and Superiority One of the most subtle yet devastating traps along the journey of faith is the temptation to measure your spiritual depth, progress, or standing with God against what you observe in another person's gift, experience, or testimony, regardless of how authentic it may sound. Now, this is where you need to be very careful because there is a fine line between spiritual pride and self-righteousness. While we don't want to fall into the trap of spiritual pride or self-exaltation, we also want to be very careful not to be entrapped by elevating men and men of God to a place where they replace Christ in our lives. The enemy is a master of using spiritual nuances, especially from the point of deceptive comparison, to pull our gaze away from the unique and sacred work God is personally doing within us. This form of spiritual comparison is not merely unwise; it is a carefully orchestrated distraction designed to erode your confidence in what God is doing specifically and intentionally in your own life.Your Walk Is Uniquely YoursGod is not a God of spiritual templates. He does not replicate journeys. The depth of what He is building in you, through your particular trials, your seasons of silence, your private surrenders, and your personal revelations, cannot be measured against another person's visible manifestations or public ministry. Spiritual maturity begins the moment you can sit peacefully in your own season, even when someone else's season appears far more spectacular. The one who can remain rooted in what God is privately doing within them, without being destabilized by what God appears to be publicly doing through another, has touched a dimension of grace that many never reach.Do not despise the quietness of your own field simply because another person's harvest looks more abundant to the naked eye. God is deeply intentional about the pace, the process, and the pathway He has chosen for you. To abandon focus on your own journey is to abandon the very ground where your greatest fruit is being cultivated.Being Used Is Not the Same as Being Right with GodThis is perhaps one of the most sobering truths in all of Scripture, and one the church must revisit with great seriousness. The gifts and callings of God are, as Paul declares, without repentance, meaning God does not revoke them simply because the vessel has drifted from intimacy with Him. This means a person can operate powerfully in the fivefold ministry, preaching with fire, healing the sick, prophesying accurately, and simultaneously be living in a state of spiritual compromise, pride, or disobedience in their private life.History and Scripture both bear this out. Samson's strength did not immediately depart when his heart departed from God. Saul prophesied even as a tormenting spirit afflicted him. And Christ Himself warned that there would be those who cast out demons and performed mighty works in His name, yet to whom He would declare, "I never knew you." Being used as an instrument of God's power is not a spiritual report card. It is not evidence of a lifestyle of submission, sacrifice, and intimate obedience to the Lord. These are two entirely different realities and confusing them is spiritually dangerous. When you see God moving through someone, celebrate it, but never use it as a measuring stick for their private standing before God, nor as a standard for your own spiritual condition. Learn, with wisdom and discernment, to separate the shaft from the wheat. The gift that operates through a person and the character that is being formed within a person are not always aligned. One can be ahead while the other lags dangerously behind.

Polarization isn't just a political issue—it's a leadership challenge, and this episode examines how nonprofit leaders can respond with presence rather than reactivity. Many of us were taught the idea that relationships are hard. But I have a secret for you. Relationships aren't hard. Keeping your ego in check and behaving kindly rather than harshly is the hard part. When two people prioritize each other, choose to engage and invest in the relationship, show up equally and honestly, and offer each other grace and kindness, relationships are easy. If you're looking for tools to learn how to do this, we've got you. Sione joins me in this podcast to talk about the tools we use and how we are creating an incredibly easy relationship. Intentional Living with Tanya Hale

When Christ informed his disciples that one of them would betray them, their response was, 'Is it I, Lord?' When I'm confronted with something that I did wrong or an accusation, most often my immediate response is, 'What are you talking about? I didn't mess that up! How could you accuse me of such a thing?!?' Hmmm. Very telling. I'm obviously not disciple worthy yet! However, I can work on developing the ability to look inward, to see my own failings and weaknesses that will allow me to take responsibility by asking, 'Is it I?' rather than looking outward to blaming, accusing, or criticizing others. It's a process of growth to get there, for all of us, but get there we will if we continue to figure it out a piece at a time. If facts were enough, everyone would already be vegan, right? We think the facts are on OUR side — but no one's listening — what then? This week, Michele explores why information alone so often fails to change hearts or habits, and what behavioral science says to do instead. Drawing on the research of cognitive neuroscientist Gleb Tsipursky, whose EGRIP framework (Emotions, Goals, Rapport, Information, Positive Reinforcement) explains how minds actually shift, Michele shares practical tools for calmer, more compassionate conversations — especially around vegan and plant-based choices.Whether you're navigating holiday dinners, family debates, or the classic “I could never give up steak” moment, you'll learn the single “magic question” proven to open minds and lower defenses — and discover why curiosity always beats convincing. In this episode:Why facts backfire when they threaten identity or belongingGleb Tsipursky's science-based EGRIP sequence for persuasionHow to use one powerful question to spark opennessWhat to say (and not say) when loved ones dismiss your choicesWhy humility and patience are your most persuasive toolsListen if you want to: …have kinder, calmer, more effective conversations about veganism, climate, or any polarizing topic — and stay connected to the people you care about most.KEY TAKEAWAYSFacts can backfire when they threaten identity, belonging, or self-image.Belonging > Being Right. Learning to live in relationship is a skill, and one that many of us have not learned, let alone even considered. But to have the intimate, connected relationships we innately crave, it is imperative we learn to move into 'we' thinking, considering our spouse and our relationship just as much as we consider ourselves. When we can deeply desire our spouse's happiness and fulfillment just as much as our own, when we truly desire to understand them and be a part of making their life significantly better, then we are on the path to living relationally. If we just want to do what we want, we have no business being in relationship because choosing another person in our lives means we are also choosing to stop asking who is right, and instead focus on what is right for the relationship. News for the Heart talks with Tom Campbell on Choosing Love Instead of BEing Right. The insightful conversation with Tom Campbell on "Choosing Love Instead of Being Right," couldn't be more relevant in our current global landscape. It's a powerful reflection on how the very tools designed to connect us—the internet and social media—have inadvertently become catalysts for division and fear. We find ourselves in a deeply fractured world. We are struggling to find common ground, largely because of our ingrained human need to be right. This discussion eloquently highlights the overwhelming challenge of navigating a 24/7 news cycle, where the line between fact and fiction is blurred by a constant influx of information, exacerbated by AI's ability to make fabricated narratives appear authentic. The struggle for peace and unity is intensified as we retreat into echo chambers. It has been reinforced by algorithms that feed us content aligning with our existing beliefs. Tom Campbell's assertion that we've created a "perfect storm" resonates deeply; never before have we experienced such pervasive division coupled with immediate access to a torrent of information. Social media, in particular, thrives on engagement, often prioritizing sensationalism—even hate speech. Which has an over genuine connection, creating a fertile ground for conflict rather than understanding. The addition of materialism to this equation is a crucial point, as it fuels a possessive mindset that reinforces the ego's need to defend "what's theirs" . As well as, consequently, to be right. Yet, as the podcast beautifully conveys, true growth and the evolution of consciousness aren't about being right; they are about embracing kindness, love, and acceptance, with an unwavering focus on peace and unity. Relationships, especially real-world interactions, are presented as the true crucible for this growth, fostering balance and positivity in a way that often eludes the superficiality of online interactions. The hopeful message is clear: this era of separation can conclude if we consciously choose love over the relentless need to be right. The only real change we can enact begins within ourselves. By understanding our fears, making a deliberate choice for kindness and positivity.  We can learn to listen without the need to justify our own beliefs. We open ourselves to a profound shift—a lowering of personal entropy that allows us to truly be love. This podcast truly gets to the heart of what matters, offering a compassionate pathway towards healing our divided world. We're getting to the Heart of What Matter!

Knowing how to repair is an essential skill for creating healthy and happy relationships, and that darn ego of ours can make it so difficult to show up in loving and kind ways because it wants to be right and it wants to prove to our spouse how wrong they are. But learning to show up creating a safe space for our spouse, especially in the context of a relationship struggle, is a valuable relationship tool that will change the trajectory of your relationship, while at the same time providing you with the self-care necessary to increase your sense of self and continue to show up better and better. Do you sometimes feel like conversations with your partner are turning into arguments lately?Or that you're often misunderstood, even when you try to talk openly? If you've ever felt this way, you're not alone.I know. I've been there and know that feeling when you are seeking connection through a deep conversation but somehow that conversation just doesn't go as planned. In a world where communication often falls short—even when we're looking at the same reality—misunderstandings seem to grow, and the divide feels wider than ever. But what if you could break through those barriers? What if you could grab your partner by the hand and say, "There's something I really need to talk about"?So, how can you do this?Let me introduce you to my Communication Framework for Having Difficult Conversations. This thoughtful approach will help you address even the most sensitive topics with calm and understanding. Here's how you can get started:1- Let Go of Being Right or Wrong – Shift the focus from “winning” the conversation to understanding each other's perspectives. This creates a safe space where both of you feel heard.2- Rebuild the Affinity You Once Had – That deep connection you shared? It's still there. By focusing on that shared bond, you'll find it easier to navigate even the most difficult discussions.3- Use The 2-Way Communication Cycle & The 2-Circle Method for Mutual Needs – These tools ensure that both of you feel understood and respected while addressing each other's needs. If you want to learn how to apply these techniques and bring back meaningful, open conversations with your partner, make sure to listen to this week's podcast episode NOW!I trust that with the right tools, you'll turn every conversation into a step toward greater connection and deep understanding.FREE tools:Get FREE access to my ‘Conflict Cure' mini-course, plus weekly relationship tools delivered straight to your inbox —> https://bit.ly/RelationalIQ-NewsletterNeed more customized support? Lead Pastor Josh Carstensen continues a series on the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus makes a statement about obsession. He says, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied" (Matthew 5:6). Jesus doesn't say blessed are those who have righteousness. The blessing is in the longing, in the obsession. That feels backward. At the crux of Jesus' statement is the word righteousness. Let's find out how that will bring us satisfaction. But first, we'll start with a testimony from two of our long-term missionary partners in Uganda and how they're seeingpeople hunger and thirst for righteousness.
