In this episode of "AGE BETTER," I took a deep dive with Dr. Rhonda Garelick, a renowned writer and cultural critic who contributes the "Face Forward" column for The New York Times's Style section. Dr. Garelick is the D.E. Hughes Jr. Distinguished Chair for English and Professor of Journalism at Southern Methodist University and will soon begin a new role as the Founding Director of the Interdisciplinary Public Humanities Institute at Hofstra University. Dr. Garelick has authored three acclaimed books, including “Mademoiselle: Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History,” and is currently working on a new book titled “Why Fashion Matters,” exploring the intricate connections between fashion and politics. Her writings have appeared in New York Magazine, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Vanity Fair, and more. A Yale University alumna and a Guggenheim fellow, Dr. Garelick brings a wealth of insight to our discussion today about the remarkable Dr. Ruth Westheimer. We delve into Dr. Garelick's recent New York Times article on Dr. Ruth, the iconic sex therapist who recently passed away at 96. Dr. Ruth was renowned for her open, frank discussions about sexuality, which broadened the window for talking about sex and sexuality. With her accent and high-pitched voice, she was both startling and disarming, helping to normalize conversations about sex. In her conversation with Dr. Garelick, who had the opportunity to meet Dr. Ruth 30 years ago, they discuss the significant impact Dr. Ruth had on breaking societal norms and challenging taboos around sex. Dr. Ruth's ability to disarm and make people laugh with her incongruous persona played a crucial role in making conversations about sex more comfortable. She emphasized the importance of sexual pleasure and communication throughout all stages of life. Her legacy is a powerful reminder to embrace joy and openness in every moment of our lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS: - Dr. Ruth challenged societal norms and taboos around sex by openly discussing and normalizing the topic. - Her ability to disarm and make people laugh with her incongruous persona helped to break down barriers and make conversations about sex more comfortable. - Dr. Ruth emphasized the importance of sexual pleasure and communication throughout all stages of life. - Her legacy serves as a reminder to use every moment of our lives and to embrace joy and openness. What happens when organized groups of working class Jewish communists pool their resources to create cooperative housing in New York City? Avi Garelick and Andrew Schustek have some ideas for us. Their detailed history, “The Rise and Fall of the Coops,” in the latest issue of Jewish Currents, examines the incredible story of the United Workers Cooperatives (or “Coops”), which were part of a wave of radical housing experiments built in the Bronx in the 1920s and 1930s. As Garelick and Schustek share in this conversation, the history of the Coops has vital lessons about the possibilities and limits of mutual aid when capital still controls the flow of power and resources.

Marc Garelick, is a Partner with Meyer, Olson, Lowy & Meyers, LLP, and has specialized in family litigation since day one. After years of experience working high asset cases in Los Angeles, he formed his own firm 6 years ago where they exclusively deal with family cases that require courtroom litigation. Located in Orange County, this is the largest family law firm in California. He works with clients goals in mind, and no two clients have the same needs. Every relationship is unique, and Marc stresses the importance of communication not just within your family unit, but with your attorney as well. Marc has taken the time to shed some light on how people dealing with domestic issues may go about navigating post-pandemic courtroom proceedings. The close quarters we’re all subject to now only escalates the likelihood of domestic issues arising. Domestic violence issues may still be heard, however child support cases will likely fall through the cracks until courts reopen and catch up. Currently there are over 1700 motions just waiting to be filed, and that number is growing as the shutdown continues. The backlog of cases is likely to cause long-term problems, but Marc offers some advice on how to settle in a Post-Covid 19 world. On this episode, I have a great conversation with Brad Cohen. Brad is an estate and business planning attorney with Cohen, Garelick, and Glazier law firm in Indianapolis. What’s unique about Brad, though, is his practice is very focused and dedicated on serving the personal and business planning needs of white coat professionals. As we unpack and discuss the specific legal challenges as well as planning considerations and strategies for white coat professionals, Brad’s extensive experience and well-rounded body of knowledge make him a great guest for today’s show. During our conversation, we discuss: Contract negotiation strategies and ideas for associates…and why the size of the organization you’re considering joining matter in that process. Should you hire an attorney to review your contract or can you do it yourself? What is “estate planning” and when should you complete that process? The difference between wills and trusts and mistakes to avoid The different types of business entities to choose from when starting a practice and the benefits to each entity. How to think about transitioning an associate to an owner/equity partner…and why it’s not always a great financial move for the original owner. A strategy to use a certain type of retirement plan to help offset potential tax liabilities from the sale of their practice. Why it’s important to have a buy/sell plan in place…and why you don’t always need to use life insurance to fund it! The difference between a stock and an asset sale when selling or buying a practice…and which one you should pursue (depending on whether you’re the buyer or seller). The Trump White House is a place where a powder-keg masculinity is on dangerous display, ready to explode at any moment. Since his arrival in Washington, Rhonda Garelick’s cultural criticism has brilliantly argued that to understand the man and his administration, you have to pay attention to the women. At a time when the political dynamics around gender are especially volatile, Garelick, a professor at the University of Nebraska and an institute fellow since 2016, has become one of our most original observers, combining her celebrated scholarly work on the history of design, fashion, literature, and performance with a shrewd eye on the intersection of power, gender, and high-stakes theatricality.
