In this episode of "AGE BETTER," I took a deep dive with Dr. Rhonda Garelick, a renowned writer and cultural critic who contributes the "Face Forward" column for The New York Times's Style section. Dr. Garelick is the D.E. Hughes Jr. Distinguished Chair for English and Professor of Journalism at Southern Methodist University and will soon begin a new role as the Founding Director of the Interdisciplinary Public Humanities Institute at Hofstra University. Dr. Garelick has authored three acclaimed books, including “Mademoiselle: Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History,” and is currently working on a new book titled “Why Fashion Matters,” exploring the intricate connections between fashion and politics. Her writings have appeared in New York Magazine, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, Vanity Fair, and more. A Yale University alumna and a Guggenheim fellow, Dr. Garelick brings a wealth of insight to our discussion today about the remarkable Dr. Ruth Westheimer. We delve into Dr. Garelick's recent New York Times article on Dr. Ruth, the iconic sex therapist who recently passed away at 96. Dr. Ruth was renowned for her open, frank discussions about sexuality, which broadened the window for talking about sex and sexuality. With her accent and high-pitched voice, she was both startling and disarming, helping to normalize conversations about sex. In her conversation with Dr. Garelick, who had the opportunity to meet Dr. Ruth 30 years ago, they discuss the significant impact Dr. Ruth had on breaking societal norms and challenging taboos around sex. Dr. Ruth's ability to disarm and make people laugh with her incongruous persona played a crucial role in making conversations about sex more comfortable. She emphasized the importance of sexual pleasure and communication throughout all stages of life. Her legacy is a powerful reminder to embrace joy and openness in every moment of our lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS: - Dr. Ruth challenged societal norms and taboos around sex by openly discussing and normalizing the topic. - Her ability to disarm and make people laugh with her incongruous persona helped to break down barriers and make conversations about sex more comfortable. - Dr. Ruth emphasized the importance of sexual pleasure and communication throughout all stages of life. - Her legacy serves as a reminder to use every moment of our lives and to embrace joy and openness. In this episode, Cheryl and Carrie discuss: Why people get nervous in picture taking Keep your headshot updated Putting your best face forward Creating a consistent look Key Takeaways: Most people don't like having their picture taken not because they don't like looking at themselves but because they're afraid of what others are thinking about them. What you can do instead is put your attention into the things that bring you joy and smile. You have to always keep your pictures updated because it's very important for your business. Get your picture taken at least four times a year or once every quarter. You are selling yourselves, so put your very best face forward. Learning more about what kind of lighting is best for your features, what pose or angle, and what clothes best complement your skin tone and form will help you create much better pictures of yourself. Consistency in your brand is very important. Be consistent in your marketing, your business card, your email signature, and basically everything about your business that you see all the time. Step outside the box when your posting in social media “You know that your service and your skills and your mastery are important to the lifeblood of the business. Don't be afraid to get out there. Under his leadership, HJZ Productions grew to a multi-million-dollar nationwide provider of top talent in the broadcasting field. In 2019, Howie and his team founded Viridity Entertainment Services, Inc. (VES) which initially focused on staffing in non-union markets. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, they quickly pivoted to offering best in class, broadcast quality livestreams of professional sports shows and interviews, corporate interviews and meetings, and religious services. In addition, Howie took his love of the television production business and created The TV Sports Course, a hands-on training boot camp for the next generation of television crew professionals. Howie is a graduate of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh's Mass Communication program. In today's episode, Howie will talk more about how he was able to identify and pursue business opportunities in the media space. He will also provide insights into what having the best production tools, equipment, and spaces is all about. Listen in! It is important to me to kind of give back and help others, so I'm all about training the younger generation of people to coach and help them get into the business. I started HJZ Productions after I realized that there was a business opportunity in staffing sports and entertainment events, and we turned the business into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. The changes in the TV industry provided another opportunity for us to where we started a business to serve our clients, both with their remote crews and their and their local crews. Up until COVID, I was still shooting camera and our business HJZ Productions and Viridity Entertainment Services were going strong. I keep up on the industry and I educate myself a lot as an entrepreneur, because then if you stay stagnant, you're not going to grow. In June, our first company HJZ Productions was hired by West Point to produce the graduation for the cadets and their families because their families can come because of COVID. My education started with the live streaming and I found ways to monetize the knowledge I had acquired through my business. Commercial Break When I was shooting camera, I met a lot of people and heard a ton of inspiring stories, and the live stream has just brought in a whole new horizon of what we're capable of doing. In live streaming, you need to invest in fast speed and reliable internet. You also want to invest in a good microphone such as Yeti blues. Your cameras are also important, and you want to be able to control the focus rather than having the autofocus on. Good lighting is also important, making sure that you have light on either side of you, and one above the head from the back side. Be sure to turn your Wi Fi off when using Ethernet because your computer will use Wi fi first if it is set on position Getting your content and your message out there is so powerful, and video is the best way to do it. ………………………………………………… Thank you to our March Sponsor! Well, COURAGE SQUAD, we made it! Go us! 2020 was a doozie of a year, but the hard work's not over. Every year we need to reach down deep and cultivate new courage for the next. So to kick us off, we've put together a little primer on how to face forward into the New Year with courage. Why does it take courage to face forward? Let's consider these factors. The transition from 2020 to 2021 seems circumstantially unchanged. This might be the case for other years as well. And even though this is true, we can still choose to be intentional with our attitude and actions. With the growth we've experienced by getting through the challenges of 2020 we can face our current challenges with the courage we've acquired. Here's how. A short list of different strategies to help you face forward. 1. Find time and space to be intentionally thoughtful to reflect. This can be an hour of alone time. Or a full day or even a retreat away from your everyday ordinary life. When you push back from the noise you can gain a broader perspective of what was, is, and could be in the future. No one is courageous when they are weary, busy, or frustrated. It's critical to celebrate the highs, mourn the lows, and acknowledge that the vast majority of your days aren't as bad as you may be claiming them to be. 2. Set some goals. Setting goals and putting deadlines on the calendar in areas that are not necessarily work or productivity related. YOU ARE A HUMAN BEING. NOT A HUMAN DOING. When you are intentional about caring for yourself in every area of your life, you will fostering personal growth which aides in humaning well. Pay attention to areas that need rest, care, and enjoyment. Physical, creative, and learning goals are important to your overall personal growth. 3. Fly a banner. Choosing a WORD as a theme for your year can aid in focus and inspiration. 4. Create a growth plan for yourself. It doesn't have to be a hard driven goal. Small steps can lead to consistency and consistency leads to long term growth. Create a plan to read more or learn a new skill. Maybe you need a plan to get your finances in order or begin to journal. Start small and practice daily. You'll be surprised how much you can grow in just a year when you start small and keep to it. 5. Develop a personal motto. A sentence that affirms what you're committed to and helps you hold yourself accountable when you want to quit! Any or all of these strategies will help you move forward into the New Year with intention. Whenever we align our intention, emotion, and effort we will see growth which feeds our courage. Remember, courage is anything that requires "strength of heart." As we face forward into a New Year and new season of The Cost Is Courage Podcast, we're excited to bring some new voices into the conversation. The mission of Face Forward is to provide facial surgical reconstructive services for women and children who have been victims of violence through gang aggression or domestic violence. Such injuries are devastating, and we primarily offer facial reconstructive services for affected innocent individuals. The urgency in providing relief to innocent individuals lies in the fact that the lasting physical and emotional effects of gang and domestic violence have a documented ripple effect through generations and can affect many more than just the abused. The scars of abuse are a constant reminder of the abusive event and cause physical and psychological pain, often times lasting much longer than the abuse event. These reminders can cause victims to feel shamed, ostracized, and unable to fully recover. Our mission is to pave that first step forward toward recovery and toward the future. Our goal this year is to raise Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand dollars that will be used to provide physical and emotional reconstruction for women and children who have been victimized by domestic or gang related violence.
