Movies based on video games have a bad reputation and the "Mortal Kombat" series from the 1990's helped solidify that reputation. So who thought it was a good idea to do a remake of this film? Is it possible to make a good video game movie? Is this new Mortal Kombat movie a flawless victory? Does it continue the trend of decent video game movies? Or has the public dealt a fatality to this attempt at restarting the franchise? To avoid SPOILERS for "Mortal Kombat (2021)" skip over 42:34 - 58:50 of the episode. In a spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles, this new take on the over-the-top story of the Mortal Kombat fighting games perhaps bites off a little more than it can chew by attempting what is essentially an origin story and an Avengers-esque superhero team-up all in one. As a result, the first half stalls out a bit as it backs up a dump truck of exposition, and even then some characters that really deserve more time in the spotlight end up being shallow and forgettable. Still, Mortal Kombat finds its footing in the second half and delivers a gleefully cheesy and entertaining take on one of gaming's most historic franchises and a solid starting point for future films. From New Line Cinema comes the explosive new cinematic adventure Mortal Kombat, inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise, which most recently enjoyed the most successful video game launch in its history, Mortal Kombat 11. The film is helmed by award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker Simon McQuoid, marking his feature directorial debut, and produced by James Wan, Todd Garner, McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh. Mortal Kombat debuts in theaters and HBO Max on April 23, 2021.

At 17 years old, Todd Garner wrote down “CFO” for career objectives on his mock-up resume for a high school project. In thirty years of work and through seven job changes, Todd managed to fulfill that career objective and still find time to qualify for the Boston Marathon in multiple. Todd is one of nine children, raised by a school teacher father that inspired many. Often, familial decisions were monetary-based, which inspired Todd to achieve a financial position where he never had to say “no” to his children. Being overly dedicated to his work, he had to reevaluate and find ways to fine-tune his work/life balance with a simple rule, “have dinner with your family.”Trent Christensen hosts Todd Garner, CFO of ConMed, in an interview that proves that a fourteen-hour workday may not always be the best tactic to success. Be early. Go above and beyond. Have dinner with your family.Support the show
