"Unpacking Christian Nationalism: 'God & Country' Documentary Explores the Roots of Violence at the Capitol"This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support! How does a religion that claims to be rooted in love and peace fire people up to commit violence, as at the Capitol on January 6, 2021? In a brand-new documentary, “God & Country”, producer Rob Reiner and director Dan Partland explore Christian Nationalism — a toxic brew of patriarchal White Nationalism and messianic faith. Based on the book “The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism” by Katherine Stewart, “God & Country” exposes how Christian Nationalism poses a real and immediate threat, not only to the very idea of secular democracy but also to Christianity itself. Reiner is an Emmy-winning actor and acclaimed director, best known for his work on “All In The Family”, “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Princess Bride”. He is also a political activist dedicating his time to numerous social justice causes. Partland, a veteran documentary producer and director for film and television, is a five-time Emmy nominee with two Emmys for Best Nonfiction Series including American High on Fox. Whether you're a Christian or a concerned citizen, this episode is a must-watch. Plus, a closing commentary from Laura on becoming actively engaged in our democracy.“If you believe the United States has a God-ordained role to play in human history as a Christian nation and democracy is taking us away from those principles, then you can justify doing anything to make sure that God's will is done. That's what I think you see happening on January 6th.” - Dan Partland“Christian nationalism . . . as this political movement is not the majority. It is far from the majority. What is scary is that because of the way our system works, a very virulent minority can control our politics and that's what they've done.” - Rob ReinerGuests:• Dan Partland: Director, God & Country• Rob Reiner: Producer, God & CountryFor the Full Uncut Conversation of this podcast, Listen HERE, or search wherever you get your podcasts.Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more.Music In the Middle:  “Promised Land (Homage)” a rework by Barbara Tucker and The BCrew of the Joe Smooth Classic courtesy of B Star Music Group.  And additional music included- "Steppin"  by Podington Bear. In this episode of Faithful Politics, hosts Will Wright and Pastor Josh Burtram engage in a compelling conversation with veteran documentary producer and director Dan Partland. They delve into Partlin's latest film, "God and Country," exploring its thematic focus on the intersection of faith and politics, particularly Christian nationalism's impact on American democracy and faith itself. The discussion covers Partlin's career trajectory, his approach to documentary filmmaking, and the motivations behind "God and Country," offering insights into the complex dynamics of political and religious identities in the United States. The conversation also touches on the challenges and responsibilities of addressing such a polarizing topic, aiming to foster a deeper understanding among viewers and encourage critical reflection on the roles of faith and nationalism in shaping public discourse and policy.Guest Bio:Dan Partland is a veteran Documentary Producer and Director for Film & Television. His work includes several landmark Nonfiction Films and Series of the past two decades. He has twice won the Emmy for Best Nonfiction Series and been twice nominated, Nonfiction Producer of the Year, by the Producers Guild of America.Partland cut his teeth in film, apprenticing with cinema verité pioneer Albert Maysles before launching his own New York based indie film collective, OTHER PICTURES (OPIX), where he produced numerous independent features, both scripted and documentary. While at OPIX, Partland partnered with first-time director Todd Solondz to produce Solondz' debut feature WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE, which went on to win the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and become a cult classic. Dan Partland has amassed an impressive body of documentary film work including, American High, Intervention, American Style, American Race and Apple's top selling doc of all time, #Unfit, which studies the dangerous psychology of Donald Trump. Along with Rob Reiner, Dan is now bringing us God + Country, opening in theaters this Friday. Dan joins us to talk about the film which chronicles the current wave of American right wing extremism that is jeopardizing our nation's governing principles, our humanistic ideals and the Christian faith itself.God + Country visits the pews and pulpits of our nation's mega-churches from where we learn that right wing Christian extremists believe that America is fulfilling a Messianic prophecy and their God given mission is to see it through, by any means necessary. Dan tells us that this current wave of Christian extremism is rooted in racism and is determined to enshrine white Christians at the top of a cultural caste system.Christian nationalism is the belief that America should be a government mandated Christian nation. GOD & COUNTRY explores how a base of Christians has radically stoked a movement which is erasing the line between Church and State. Dan shares that there are almost 200,000,000 Americans who identify as Christians and many of them now fear that their faith is being hijacked by an extreme right wing political movement.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending Genius: MLK/X on Nat Geo/Hulu/Disney + and Expats on Prime.Path Points of Interest:Dan Partland on IMDBDoc Shop ProductionsDan Partland on Twitter/X#UnfitGod and CountryGod and Country TrailerGod and Country on FacebookGod and Country on Twitter/XGod and Country on InstagramHollywood Reporter Article on God and CountryExpats on PrimeGenius: MLK/X - Nat Geo/Hulu/Disney

Nice is not enough: Inequality and the Limits of Kindness at American High (University of California Press, 2023) by Dr. C. J. Pascoe is a provocative story of contemporary high school that argues that a shallow culture of kindness can do more lasting harm than good. Based on two years of research, Nice Is Not Enough shares striking dispatches from one high school's "regime of kindness" to underline how the culture operates as a band-aid on persistent inequalities. Through incisive storytelling and thoughtful engagement with students, this brilliant study by Dr. Pascoe exposes uncomfortable truths about American politics and our reliance on individual solutions instead of profound systemic change. Nice Is Not Enough brings readers into American High, a middle- and working-class high school characterized by acceptance, connection, and kindness—a place where, a prominent sign states, "there is no room for hate." Here, inequality is narrowly understood as a problem of individual merit, meanness, effort, or emotion rather than a structural issue requiring deeper intervention. Surface-level sensitivity allows American High to avoid "political" topics related to social inequality based on race, sex, gender, or class. Being nice to each other, Dr. Pascoe reveals, does not serve these students or solve the broader issues we face; however, a true politics of care just might. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. It's been nearly two decades since Alabama teen Natalee Holloway disappeared in Aruba. Now, the man last seen with Holloway and also the man suspected of killing her will be extradited to the US. Joran van der Sloot will not be on trial for Holloway's murder however, but for extortion of money from her mother, Beth Holloway. Beth Holloway says van der Sloot reached out to an attorney promising to explain what happened to Natalee and lead authorities to the remains. He asked for $250,000, which was $25,000 wired to him as part of an FBI sting. This is the basis of the current wire fraud and extortion charges against him. Van der Sloot fled Aruba to Peru where he was arrested for the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores. She died five years, to the day, of Natalee's disappearance. Joran van der Sloot was convicted and has been serving a 28-year prison sentence.   An extradition treaty with Peru is making temporary extradition possible.  Joining Nancy Grace today:  Dale Carson - High Profile Criminal Defense Attorney (Jacksonville), Former FBI Agent, and Former Police Officer (Miami-Dade County); Author: "Arrest-Proof Yourself;" Twitter: @DaleCarsonLaw  Caryn Stark - Psychologist- Trauma and Crime Expert; Twitter: @carnpsych Sheryl McCollum - Cold Case Investigative Research Institute Founder and Host of the new podcast: "Zone 7;", Twitter: @149Zone7   Irv Brandt - Senior Inspector, US Marshals Service- International Investigations Branch; Chief Inspector, DOJ Office of International Affairs; Author: “SOLO SHOT: CURSE OF THE BLUE STONE” (available on Amazon); Also: "FLYING SOLO: Top of the World;" Twitter: @JackSoloAuthor   Joseph Scott Morgan - Professor of Forensics: Jacksonville State University, Author, "Blood Beneath My Feet;" Host: "Body Bags with Joseph Scott Morgan;" Twitter: @medcolegaldeath  Art Harris -Two-time Emmy-Winning Investigative Journalist See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Banafsheh Fathieh invests in startups that positively impact their communities in Latin America. As an early-stage venture capitalist looking for opportunities in the Latin American market, Banafsheh is the Head of Investments at Prosus Ventures, the venture arm of Prosus Group, the international Internet assets division of South African multinational Naspers, and one of the largest tech investors globally. The company has a history of working in emerging markets, where it partners with entrepreneurs with high potential and an ambition to scale globally. Prosus tries to provide tailored support for startups to impact the communities where they operate. While Banafsheh dreamed of working as a diplomat, she ended up working in finance and investing almost by accident. Now she is passionate about helping Latin American startups scale. Listen to this episode to hear about Prosus Ventures' investment thesis, and learn why Banafsheh thinks Latin America is any VCs dream market. She also shares advice on how trusting your own gut and research can be more important than cold facts and macro trends. LatAm: talented entrepreneurs with capital constraintsWhile analyzing startups globally, Banafsheh realized that Latin America has a mismatch between available capital and the talent pool relative to other parts of the world. Latin America has gone through several unfavorable cycles that ended up spooking investors, who overcorrected and reduced the amount of capital allocated to both equity and credit. This overcorrection created a value asymmetry, where valuations did not match the quality of the entrepreneurs. In this episode, Banafsheh Fathieh explains the lack of investment in Latin America and how it bred a generation of creative founders that are blooming recently.Latin America's underserved tech-savvy populationLatin America has brilliant founders and a population of technology enthusiasts who love all things digital. As an American of Iranian descent, Banafsheh got to know Latin American culture through her university classmates. She spent time in Brazil and Argentina and found structural issues that founders could help solve. Banafsheh is helping foster Latin Americans' entrepreneurial spirit and helping them close the access gap in products and services for an underserved market.Check out this episode of Crossing Borders to learn more about Banafsheh's insights on why, tech is moving in the right direction, despite some macro trends creating headwinds for some Latin American countries.Prosus Ventures patient investment thesisProsus Ventures is focused on helping early-stage entrepreneurs navigate the venture capital world. Prosus Ventures is stage agnostic and they focus on the talent and less on spreadsheets. Prosus's investments in Latin America are mainly in consumer Internet and fintech companies. Unlike a traditional fund, they can work with a company for decades and be long-term holders, this allows them to support startups through many cycles with no pressure to deploy. In this episode of Crossing Borders, Banafsheh explains her role in Prosus Ventures and why their structure allows them to provide “patient capital” with no artificial constraints.Outline of this episode:[01:25] - About Prosus Ventures[02:47] - What types of companies does Prosus invest in?[05:40] - Banafsheh's background[07:59] - Diplomatic training's lessons[09:17] - First connection to Latin America[12:15] - Evolution of investment thesis in Latin America.[15:39] - Receiving investment from a fund vs. from Prosus Ventures[18:23] - Some of Prosus' most interesting investments[23:02] - Being a bullish investor for Latin America[27:30] - Advice for founders[29:15] - Banafsheh's recommendations[30:30] - Advice to Banafsheh's younger self[32:18] - What's next for Prosus Ventures?People & resources mentioned:Banafsheh FathiehProsus VenturesNathan LustigGeorgetown UniversityMovileWebsiteCrossing Borders Episode with Fabricio Bloisi, CEO of Movile iFoodWebsiteCrossing Borders episode with Carlos Moyses, CEO of iFoodKlar Azos Kovi99 minutos

Editors - Greg Finton ACE and Lindsay Utz ACE Editors Greg Finton ACE and Lindsay Utz ACE hadn't worked together prior to Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry, but they each had plenty of experience in the world of unscripted storytelling to bring to the table for director R.J. Cutler's film.  The story centers around singer-songwriter Billie Eilish and reveals the behind the scenes creation process of her debut studio album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?   Released in select theaters via Neon and on Apple TV+ on February 26, 2021, the film has garnered four Primetime Emmy® nominations, including Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming for Greg and Lindsay. GREG FINTON ACE Although Greg had previously worked with "Billie Eilish" director R.J. Cutler on the series American High, Greg's storied career in documentary editing actually began in the film cutting rooms of some legendary scripted editors.  Working as an assistant to editors such as Lynzee Klingman ACE (A River Runs Through It) and Sandra Adair ACE (Dazed and Confused), Greg learned first hand how just changing the rhythm and pace of the dialogue can have a big impact on the way a scene felt.  Greg took this knowledge into his work on highly acclaimed documentaries such as It Might Get Loud, He Named Me Malala and Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind. LINDSAY UTZ ACE Prior to teaming up with Greg and R.J. Cutler for the "Billie Eilish doc", Lindsay had made quite a name for herself in the documentary world, having been nominated for both an Emmy® and an ACE Eddie award for her work on the Oscar®-winning documentary, American Factory.  A recipient of the 2012 Karen Schmeer Fellowship, Lindsay's talent as a storyteller can also be seen in the documentary projects; Bully, Quest, Miss Americana, as well as the experimental narrative feature, Buoy. In 2011 Schooldigger.com ranked the school 372nd out of 381 New Jersey public High Schools for academic achievement. Trenton Central High School made national news in 2013 for the “shocking” and “decaying” conditions of its building, prompting a complete rebuild of the school, which opened in 2019. But that only tells half the story, a story, in fact, that Americans tend to “expect” when hearing about inner-city schools. Trenton Central High School is also home to a variety of small learning communities, including Science and Engineering, Media, Performing Arts, Tourism, and Business. It boasts 30 clubs, its Boys Track indoor relay team won the state championships in 2007, 2008 and 2012, its Girls Basketball team won the state championship in 2002, 2007, and 2008, and its FIRST Robotics team were Regional winners in 2004 and 2008. And as we'll see, it is home to untold success stories, ones that might just shock and inspire you. The Educator Podcast is hosted by Matt Douglas, longtime educator and life coach for teens and young adults. Audrey Whitby is gold & the Audrey Whitby - Joey Bragg relationship is a Young Hollywood Mini Power Couple of Comedy! You know her as Cherry on The Thundermans. I first saw Audrey Whitby on So Random! (Sonny With a Chance semi-spin-off) was my first time seeing her on TV!  Audrey is so…incredibly…talented! Her sense of timing and acting chops are so on-point! It’s incredible to see her at work with Joey Bragg on Betch (which also has a few other Liv and Maddie faces). Just after we filmed the intro, we got word back from American High at her upcoming movie, Sid Is Dead, with Joey Bragg (Liv and Maddie), G Hannelius (Dog with a Blog and Sonny with a Chance), Mary Stuart Masterson, and even Jack Griffo (The Thundermans) is in post production!    So, as we were packing up at the end of last year’s Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards 2019 orange carpet, there was Audrey! I couldn’t have been happier to see her! It had been so long since our last run-in back in 2014 at Allisyn Snyder (Allisyn Ashley Arm’s) Art show in 2014 and before that at the Lone Ranger Premiere in Disney’s California Adventure back in 2013! Let’s start with a catch up-intro, then jump into our new interview followed by a couple of clips from the fun Piper’s Picks Planetary Archives!  Thank you so much for watching, guyz!

Yale graduate Jeremy Garelick started in the mailroom at the Creative Artists Agency, before going on to work as assistant to legendary writer/director, Joel Schumacher on Tigerland, Bad Company, Phone Booth, and Veronica Guerin. Jeremy made his feature screenplay debut with the Vince Vaughn vehicle The Break-Up and followed that by teaming up with Todd Phillips to pen the production draft of The Hangover, establishing himself as the go-to A-list comedy writer in Hollywood. In 2015 Jeremy directed his first feature film, The Wedding Ringer starring Kevin Hart and Josh Gad. Between writing, directing, and show running his Netflix original limited series, Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever., and executive producing his YouTube Red original, Side Swiped, Jeremy also formed his own production company, American High. Staked with a $45 million film fund, American High has shot five indie comedies in Garelick’s recently acquired school-turned-studio in Syracuse, NY, including Big Time Adolescence, starring Pete Davidson, Jon Cryer, and Sydney Sweeney, which was recently invited to compete in dramatic competition at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. In addition, American High Founder Jeremy Garelick is set to direct and produce a slate of three higher budget high school comedy features in 2020. Hey guys, S2 E2, yayyyy! This week, I am so excited to introduce you to three super cool and motivated girl bosses. We are revealing the secret starting your own side hustle and small business. If you’ve ever thought about pursuing a passion project, this episode is for you. First we have @SamanthaFeher. You all probably recognize her name, because she was actually on S1 E2 of Girl Gaze! Now she’s back and ready to kill it on S2 E2. Sam is an influencer, an editorial assistant at Cosmo, runs a cute online boutique called Brunch Club and does consulting on the side.  Next up is Celine Rahman, who is a costumer at the production company American High. She even worked on that new Hulu movie with Pete Davidson, “Big Time Adolescence.” On top of her full time job, Celine is the creator of her “90s glitter candy shop,” otherwise known as @CupOfRahman. Our third guest is Natalie Acopian. At the end of her junior year in college, Natalie started an Instagram account in addition to her personal, because she wanted to create a platform where she could post photos with her graphic design flair; all for fun! Her aesthetic resonated with a specific niche, and it took off. She recently gave her visual brand, @ColorfulNatalie, a shoppable aspect. Sam breaks down the branding behind her boutique “Brunch Club" (10:25). Developing a visual aesthetic is just as important as fleshing out a brand voice. Natalie reveals how she brought her vision to life on Instagram and her website. (15:45). Pinterest is still a thing! We chat about how you can use this platform to not only gain inspiration, but also to grow your business and following. (17:40). Find out how Celine designs and illustrates her 90s-glitter-candy-shop-inspired products with resin (19:35). Sam and Natalie walk us through the careful curation of their online clothing collections, and Sam tells us how she sold out of a new collection in 15 minutes (24:40). These three girl bosses share the biggest things they’ve learned since starting their small businesses. (33:00). Natalie spills the tea about that time she received a DM from a hater, and how she’s moved on (41:15). Meanwhile, Celine gets real about someone copying her designs (43:15). We close this candid conversation with one last piece of advice from each of the panelists on what it takes to successfully start your own side hustle or small business: Believe in yourself, adopt a data driven approach, and just do it (48:25). Connect with us on Instagram! @GirlGazePod; @TaylerBradford@EatBrunchClub; @SamanthaFeher@CupOfRahman; @ThatGoodRahman@ShopColorfulNatalie; @ColorfulNatalie Support my small business sponsor!
