THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2009 retrospective is continuing with one of the best films of the year, one which greatly benefitted from the Academy expanding the Best Picture field to ten nominees: Joel Coen and Ethan Coen's "A Serious Man," starring Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind, Fred Melamed, Sari Lennick, Aaron Wolff, Amy Landecker, Simon Helberg & Adam Arkin. Mixing the personal with the existential and philosophical, the seriously funny Jewish film about one man going through a series of trials and tribulations, all while searching for the meaning behind it all, is regarded as one of the Coen Bros. best films. What do we think of it? Join Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Tom O'Brien, guest Charlie Bright, and me as we discuss our thoughts on the writing, its themes, characters, performances, best gags, craftsmanship, its awards season run, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. We saw a ton of recognizable, and established, actors stop by Boy Meets World as a guest star through the first 5 seasons of the show - but it’s possible none were as interesting, and inspiring, as this week’s guest. In addition to playing “Jump Master” in the newly G.O.A.T.’d Season 5 episode, “Raging Cory,” this familiar face has worked with Spike Lee, Bong Joon Ho, Wes Anderson and the Coen Bros., where he stole one of the most intensely dramatic (and funny?) scenes in film history. Oh, and did we mention he was a cast member on In Living Color? He’s legendary, internally evolved and a pioneer when it comes to racial equality and standing up for what you believe in. Even when it’s hard to do. This week on Pod Meets World - it’s Stephen Park!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay just got back from pullin' off a job at Brainerd so they can talk about the Coen Bros' crime-comedy masterpiece 'Fargo.' Andy kicks off the episode by remembering when he dragged a group of friends (and their parents) to see this R-rated chiller in theater. Then the boys indulge in a fountain of conversation...a geyser, as they talk about what is perhaps the Coens' funniest movie. Stuffed with inept criminals and all-around low lifes, the film features a never-funnier Steve Buscemi and his sociopathic partner who embark on a crime/killing spree to kidnap the wife of William H. Macy's bumbling Jerry. Fortunately, Frances McDormand's saintly Marge is on the case to pick up nightcrawlers, endless orders of fast food, and apprehend the criminals who robbed and murdered people all while ruining a perfectly beautiful day. The lying and scheming degens may be popping out of every crevice — including hotel bars at the Radisson — but Marge's resolute goodness prevails. Oh geez, just check out the episode.

We've got a supersized episode to wrap up September as we talk about 12 individual movies! This got a lot bigger than expected…needless to say, antics ensue. We start by a getting a fresh-out-the-theatre review from Christian about Jason Reitman's new film Saturday Night. After that, he shares his thoughts on two other new releases, Transformers One and A Different Man. Then, Scott updates us with the 4 new-ish release films he caught up with on flights over the weekend. Once the new release roundup is complete, we debut a new format in the show, Booze You've Never Heard Of! We talk about one of the Coen brothers lesser seen films from the early 21st century, and round it out with early films from the Wachowskis, Radio Silence, Safdie brothers, and Duplass brothers. Did we pique your interest in any of these movies? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com. Stay tuned to hear our horror theme for October!

This week, our Coen brothers marathon continues as we welcome new friend of the show Max Dominguez to discuss Inside Llewyn Davis. While not the Coen brothers' biggest financial success nor a Best Picture winner, Inside Llewyn Davis has lived on as one of the most critically praised films of the 2010s. Both hosts and guest are returning to this film. Scott and Max are big fans, but is Christian due for a hot take? Listen along to find out. What's your favorite Coen bros. movie? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com
Our Coen brothers month continues as we discuss what many consider to be their best film: No Country for Old Men. Outside of winning the Academy Award for Best Picture, No Country was also a huge financial success, and has lived on as a tense, gripping thriller with deep themes. We're bringing back friends of the show Hayd and Sarcastic Sounds (aka Jeremy) to discuss this classic. Earlier this year, we discussed Hayd's favorite film of all time, Good Will Hunting (Note: He has a new favorite film as of this recording). This time, it's Jeremy's favorite. Hopefully he stay strong in his feelings. Does No Country deserve its all-timer status? Stay tuned to hear our thoughts. What's your favorite Coen Brothers movie? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com
It's the start of a new month here on Cinema on Tap, and we're spending it with another famous director…well, a famous pair of directors. The Coen Brothers! Joel & Ethan Coen are some of the most acclaimed filmmakers of recent memory, and we'll be taking a look at some of their 21st century output. We're starting with their most financially successful film: True Grit. The western starred Jeff Bridges and introduced us to Hailee Steinfeld as they formed an unlucky duo tracking down a murderer in the Old West. What will our hosts think? What's your favorite Coen Brothers movie? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com

The guest for our 50th episode is the OG himself, the redoubtable RICK WALLACH, who joins us for a rousing discussion of No Country for Old Men. Somehow both Batman and Godzilla are referenced as we consider both the novel and the Coen Bros. film. Rick Wallach has recently retired from teaching English at the University of Miami. He is a founder of the Cormac McCarthy society, the senior and primary editor of the Cormac McCarthy Society casebook series, and editor of the two-volume collection of essays Sacred Violence as well as Myth, Legend Dust: Critical Responses to Cormac McCarthy, and co-editor with Lynnea Chapman King and the late James Welsh of From Novel to Film: No Country for Old Men. He is currently working on a new book called "In Search of Godzilla: Myth, History, and Politics in Ishiro Honda's Masterpiece." As always, readers should beware: there be spoilers here. Thanks to Thomas Frye, who composed, performed, and produced the music for READING MCCARTHY. Jed Bookout joins the pod to discuss A24's early breakout hit of 2024, Love Lies Bleeding: a sapphic, bodybuilding, ultra-violent fever dream of a movie. Set in a scuzzy and sordid 1989 New Mexico setting, and tracking a pair of lesbians turned serial killers by necessity, Love Lies Bleeding is a tonal tour de force evoking the likes of Paul Schrader, Lynne Ramsey, & David Cronenberg. Perhaps the best synopsis of her sophomore entry: Imagine Nicolas WInding Refn directing a Coen Bros script. Over the course of the episode, we also discuss Rose Glass' promising future, Kristen Stewart's best career performances, the film's moral neutrality toward ‘roid rage and its juxtapositions between the seedy and the sultry, the unorthodox structural brilliance of Vox Lox, the underrated sub-genre of vagabonds going on vacations in hell (namely, Spring), and the many influences of Love Lies Bleeding's neo-noirish, black comedy beats. And yes, we make sure the conversation veers podcast relevant by intermittently debating whether it could be considered a quasi-sports movie, likening it to everything from Black Swan to The Wrestler (although, upon further reflection, Stallone's arm-wrestling masterpiece Over the Top or the Farrelly Brothers' bowling romp Kingpin may serve as better reference points). Enjoy!

Episode 205!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "Minor Threats Volume 1: A Quick End To A Long Beginning"! A new original comic series from Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum - showrunners of Marvel's M.O.D.O.K on Hulu - and superstar artist Scott Hepburn! In the vein of Sin City, Watchmen, and The Boys, this noir-ish superhero caper, focuses on a lower-class kind of criminal, similar to the Coen Bros' most pulpy films, but set in a high concept world of heroes and villains. It's hard out there for a supervillain. Not the world conquerors, chaos engines, or arch-nemeses, but the little guys, the career criminals. The ones who put on uniforms, knock over jewelry stores, and get tied to telephone poles before the hero swings off to face the actual big bad. Times are tough for costumed crooks…and they're about to get much worse. The psychotic Stickman has done the unthinkable and murdered Kid Dusk, sidekick to Twilight City's premier crime-fighter, The Insomniac. The Insomniac's teammates, The Continuum, are tearing Twilight apart, turning it into a terrifying police state—desperate to capture the Stickman and stop the Insomniac from “crossing that final line” in which he may never come back from. Caught in the middle are the small-time C-list villains, finding it impossible to pull jobs or even walk down the street without being harassed by these heroes. With a bounty on the Stickman's head, former villain Playtime decides to put together a ragtag team of equally disgruntled supervillains to take down the Stickman and kill him themselves, leading her on a dark journey into the criminal underbelly she's tried so hard to escape. This graphic crime drama is about superheroes and villains and the last gasp of the colorful, innocent days of the silver and bronze age...before they're dragged into the grit-soaked modern era. Film writer, editor, and podcaster Jake Tropila joins from Los Angeles to discuss the Coen Brothers' 1998 comedy 'The Big Lebowski', starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Though middlingly received both critically and commercially upon release, the film has gone on to become a genuine cult classic, launching a cottage industry of fan screenings, conventions, and even a religion. We discuss the film's patchwork of influences, including larger-than-life characters withing the Coens' orbit and the works of author Raymond Chandler, especially as adapted by Robert Altman for his 1973 film 'The Long Goodbye'. Then we discuss the film's unrivaled cast, including a superb John Goodman, who turns in an awards-caliber performance as the gun-toting, militant bowling enthusiast Walter Sobchak. Finally, we discuss the film's windy, inarticulable plot, and the way that its mechanics might conceal a deeper level of criticism about the sociopolitical landscape of America on the eve of The End of History. 25 years ago, the Coen Brothers followed up their Oscar-winning "Fargo" with a stoned shaggy dog riff on film noir. It bombed at the box office only to become a beloved cult film.
