Can a simple act like washing your hands transform your spiritual outlook? Join us, on the Thinking Talmudist Podcast as we explore this profound question through the lens of Jewish tradition. Our journey begins with the fascinating ritual of washing hands before eating bread, as rooted in Talmud Tractate Sotah, folio 4b. We'll unravel the layers of meaning behind this practice—it's more than just a health precaution; it's a spiritual exercise in humility and divine recognition. Hear perspectives as they add richness to our discussion and perhaps even challenging what you thought you knew about ritual and reverence. The episode takes an intriguing turn as we confront the complex interplay of arrogance, idolatry, and moral conduct. How can ancient wisdom from the Talmud guide us in today's world, especially amidst the moral pitfalls faced by public figures? We'll engage with biblical narratives that illuminate the virtues of humility, showing how Hashem favors the modest. We also explore Proverbs 16:5 to understand the spiritual dangers of arrogance, offering a nuanced view of Gehinnom and the importance of repentance. With personal anecdotes, like the inspiring story of my great aunt, a dedicated midwife in Jerusalem, this episode promises to provide both reflection and practical guidance on recognizing divine influence in your everyday life._____________The Thinking Talmudist Podcast shares select teachings of Talmud in a fresh, insightful and meaningful way. Many claim that they cannot learn Talmud because it is in ancient Aramaic or the concepts are too difficult. Well, no more excuses. Discover the transformative power of Teshuvah, or repentance, as we embark on a profound spiritual journey. Join us as we uncover why repentance is revered as one of the most potent forces in Judaism, even surpassing the Torah and Shabbos. Through the mystical ascent of Moshe and the teachings of Rebbe Levi, learn how Teshuvah reaches the throne of honor in the heavens, emphasizing the importance of spiritual reflection, especially during the poignant 10 days of repentance.Embrace the urgency of repentance and maintain a divine connection with God, as we discuss the foundational concepts set before creation, including the Torah, the Garden of Eden, and Gehinnom. By drawing parallels to the legendary tale of Sodom and Gomorrah, we highlight the timeless necessity of living a life filled with holiness and devotion. The episode also delves into the profound impact of recent tragic events around Gaza, reminding us of the critical need to align our lives with divine values and seek forgiveness before it's too late.Overcoming personal hurdles like laziness can pave the way for spiritual and personal growth, and we explore strategies to combat this pervasive trait. With insights from the Mishnah and illustrative parables, learn how to seize opportunities for repentance and change before the unpredictable nature of life takes hold. We discuss the lessons from Bernie Madoff's infamous fraud to illustrate the escalation of minor dishonest actions and stress the importance of early repentance for true spiritual cleanliness. Concluding with a heartfelt prayer for protection and clarity, we wish our listeners a meaningful Yom Kippur, filled with love, kindness, and a future without the need for repentance._____________Recorded in The Torchwood Center - Levin Family Studios (B) in Houston, Texas on October 8, 2024.Released as Podcast on October 10, 2024._____________DONATE to TORCH: Please consider supporting the podcasts by making a donation to help fund our Jewish outreach and educational efforts at https://www.torchweb.org/support.php. In this series, Rabbi Daniel Rowe learns and explains the classic Jewish mystical work, "Nefesh HaChaim" by Rav Chaim of Volozhin, touching on many deep Kabbalistic and philosophical truths in Judaism. This episode analyses the 12th chapter that discusses how the world to come is composed entirely of our own actions; we literally live inside the acts and choices we make.
What Did Rav Avigdor Miller Say About GEHINNOM? https://youtu.be/Wla85JPuTfw In the context of the Israel-Hamas conflicts, Rabbi Avigdor Miller's teachings on Gehinnom might emphasize divine justice. He would likely discuss Gehinnom as a spiritual consequence for earthly actions, underscoring the idea that ultimate justice, although not always immediately visible, is assured in the broader divine scheme. This concept can offer a theological perspective during times of conflict and moral ambiguity.

ELI ARSHADNIA: From Air Force Non-Human Encounters To Saved by Gehinnom RTH PODCAST #7 https://youtu.be/MSD_xAWVqHo Growing up in a modern Orthodox Jewish home and attending yeshiva, Eli Arshadnia found himself disillusioned with religious life, often frustrated by the apparent hypocrisy of leaders who failed to practice what they preached. This discontentment eventually led him to abandon his religious observance altogether, especially after joining the US Airforce and being deployed in Iraq, where his connection to his faith dwindled to nonexistence. In the midst of a secular lifestyle marked by military service and mysterious encounters with unidentified objects and strange creatures, Eli's heritage as a descendant of the great Rabbi Yosef Karo seemed to be lost. His marriage was strained, and his role as a husband and father was far from ideal. Everything changed once Eli saw the lecture about Gehinnom by Rabbi Yaron Reuven. Shaken to his core, Eli felt a calling to return to his religious roots. His transformation was nothing short of miraculous, as he began dedicating countless hours to Rabbi Reuven's Torah lectures, applying the teachings to every aspect of his life. The results were extraordinary; his family life flourished, and he became a beacon of faith and commitment. Today, Eli's passion for Rabbi Reuven's teachings knows no bounds, and his biggest frustration is that more people are not benefiting from them. In this compelling episode of the 'Returning to HaShem Podcast', Eli shares his unique journey, highlighting the importance of these life-changing lectures for Jews and gentiles alike. How is humanity's ultimate perfection reached? We'll explore the system of categorizing the righteous and the wicked, Gehinnom, worldly success and suffering from a big picture perspective.
Chagiga 27 : Marc Chipkin: 2022-03-08 What items in the Temple can't be purified if they become impure. A person's table is like the Alter. The fire of Gehinnom does not have an effect on Torah scholars.
Is Gehinnom up above or down below? Or is it nowhere at all?
Those who sin against God in a variety of ways go down to Gehinnom, and what happens after that (how long and for what degree) depends on the sin. With all the fear that that induces. Plus, a dig by Rava at Mehoza as sinners. Also, and acknowledgement of God's kindness, and His tipping the scales with mercy, when possible. Plus, leaders who inspire fear for the wrong reasons, and their comeuppance. Also, a strange story of R. Huna and R. Pappa, and recovery from near death, and an encounter with the Divine. Plus, series of verses about the righteousness of God, and also His forgiveness. Also, God teaching Moshe how to ask for mercy with the 13 attributes of God, which would surely be impossible but for the fact that God trained us in it. To what extent is judgement reversible? Perhaps it's not as simple as we would hope.

This is part 2 of 2Gehenna (/ɡɪˈhɛnə/, /ɡəˈhɛnə/[3]), the Aramaic name of the Valley of Hinnom,[1] or Gehinnom, is the corresponding geographical term modified in the process of translation of the Hebrew Bible, which has received various fundamental theological connotations. In the Hebrew Bible, Gehenna was initially where some of the kings of Judah sacrificed their children by fire.[4] Thereafter, it was deemed to be cursed (Book of Jeremiah 7:31, 19:2–6).[5]. ~Wikipedia Evangelist and businessman Dwight Lyman Moody established the Moody bible institute in 1886. The principles of Judaism : Torah study, MItzva observance, prayer, the spiritual neshamah and Hashem's presence are all concepts we live with daily, but only on their most superficial level. For the ben aliya looking to explore more of the tremendous depth and meaning inherent in Torah and uncover the limitless potential for growth in Yiddishkeit, no sefer explores these concepts more clearly than Rav Chaim Voloziner's classic, the Nefesh Hachayim. As the primary disciple of the Vilna Gaon, R Chayim is able to weave the Gaon's approach to machshava, nistar and mussar into a breathtaking tapestry of understanding.
4:21 – You ask how, if souls continue to exist, the atmosphere has room for them from time eternal. But how does the ground have room for the bodies of those who for so long an age are buried in it? The answer is that, as on earth change and dissolution after a continuance for so long make room for other dead bodies, so in the atmosphere souls pass on and continue for so long, and then change and are poured out and are kindled being assumed into the generative principle of Universal Nature, and so provide room for those which succeed to their place. This would be the answer presuming that souls do continue. But we must consider not only the multitude of bodies that are thus buried, but also the number of animals eaten every day by ourselves and the rest of the animal creation. How large a number are devoured and, in a manner of speaking, “buried” in the bodies of those who feed upon them; and yet there is room to contain them because they are turned into blood, because they are changed into forms of air and heat. How shall we investigate the truth of this? By division into that which is material and that which is the cause of form, the formal.--------------------Mishlei 30:15“The leech has two daughters that say, ‘Give me!' ‘Give me!'”Metzudas David – Mishlei 30:15the leech has – He likened the pit of the grave to a leech because it greedily sucks all people into it, just like the leech sucks blood.two daughters – they are Gan Eden and Gehinnom. Gan Eden says, “Give me tzadikim!” and Gehinnom says, “Give me reshaim!” This is an allegory, as if to say: the Tzadik shouldn't think that there isn't enough room in Gan Eden, nor should the rasha think that Gehinom is already filled to the brim and there is no room for him. This is not so, for each one of them desires more people, and has ample space, and each one will end up in his place.--------------------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! We know that the spies were not fools. We also know that they were not originally evil. Moshe chose them specifically for their righteousness. But something turned them. What was it? They saw the inherent danger of leaving behind a totally spiritual existence - sustenance on tap, nothing physical to worry about - Paradise in the desert. To enter a land where they would have to work the earth and take time away from spiritual pursuits was anathema to them. They wished to remain in the place that gave them the opportunity to divest themselves of all the negative physicality of Egypt - to go from the 'evil mouth' of Paraoh/Peh Ra, into the Midbar/Medaber, where they received the ten Commandments. (And the 5 Books of the Torah - which, as we will see, are all connected to speech.) So why were they wrong? Because the Creator - the One who had spoken the world into existence through the ten great Utterances (corresponding to the ten Commandments), said otherwise. We had to go through a cleansing process, not unlike Gehinnom of yesterday's podcast, in order to reenter the physical in a refined state. But they did not want that. They wished to remain forever in the world of potential, without actualising themselves in the physical. They wished to remain on top of the mountain. How ironic that their downfall came through the powrful medium of speech and insinuation... ...And their wish was granted...there they remain until today. Our job is to elevate the physical and synthesise it with the spiritual.
I felt that more explanation was needed on the subject of Gehinnom. We have examined what it means to realise one's potential...and its polar opposite. The burning shame of understanding that we could have been so much greater, is the burning fire of Gehinnom (or indeed the coldness of distance, in terms of lack of connection, for the same reason). But we also firmly believe that it is not the end of the story. We know that that we are given a second chance. Once we have learned our lesson, albeit painfully, we get another go on earth, or the Neshama goes up to Shomayim. We do not subscribe to the primitive theory of Purgatory being a kind of callous, cruel joke, full of eternally pointless and teasing tasks. It is an opportunity to refine the soul, in the jail of She'ol (one of the terms used for Gehinnom). Once a prisoner has served his time, he goes free. A slave, too, does the same. And those who perhaps have to serve time in the nether regions of Gehinnom, as a result of being slaves to the self, will have a chance to get out of She'ol too...
Can you imagine standing in the holiest place on earth and speaking or acting inappropriately? I hope not. But even if you can, I would still hope that it only remains in the imagination. Yet, just outside the Old City of Yerushalayim lies the Valley of Ben Hinnom - a place where child sacrifice took place. The worst of practices right by the holiest place! This is the ultimate form of unrealised potential. One could have connected on the deepest level, but instead went the other way, sacrificing one's own child - a child who himself represents unrealised potential. Gehinnom is named after this place and it is no accident that there is a connection. Gehinnom is not a rap on the knuckles. It is not meant to be a Sisyphean task, contrived just to say that you have been a naughty boy or girl. It is there to point out what went wrong. And the 'fire of embarrassment' is when you see what you could have been. Chazal describe souls after they have shed this mortal coil, as being covered by canopies. And 'each is burned by the canopy of his fellow'. Strange, no? Except, it is telling you that you could have done more. When one looks across and sees what others achieve, one is burning with shame - not jealousy - shame... So of course, this element of Creation is necessary to allow us to see the full picture. When this happens, then yes, even Gehinnom sings out its own song, and even through the pain it is a song recognising that Hashem has put in corrective measures to allow anyone a pathway back.
