We're discussing three out of this world sci-fi cop thrillers! Well technically only one is out of this world. The other two have robot spiders and aliens, but they are, in fact, of this world. OUTLAND (1981, Peter Hyams) RUNAWAY (1984, Michael Crichton) ALIEN NATION (1988, Graham Baker)

Patreon supporter Blake has picked another out of the bag with the 1999 Graham Baker movie, Beowulf. And no, that's not the animated one either. This one stars Christopher Lambert, Oliver Cotton, Gotz Otto, Layla Roberts, Patricia Velásquez, and Rhona Mitra. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: This post-apocalyptic future story is based on the 8th-century Saxon epic poem about the knight who battled a monster in a medieval castle. In this story, Beowulf is a wanderer who learns about a man-eating creature called Grendel which comes in the night to devour warriors trapped at the Outpost. The Outpost is ruled by Hrothgar. He has a daughter, whose husband may have been murdered by the Outpost's master of arms. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

0% on Rotten Tomatoes Directed by Graham Baker and written by Mark Leahy and David Chappe. Unlike most film adaptations of the poem, this version is a science-fiction/fantasy film that, according to one film critic, "takes place in a post-apocalyptic, techno-feudal future that owes more to Mad Max than Beowulf". Set in the near future of 1991, it's been three years since the landing of an actual flying saucer landed on Earth, containing a species of aliens (dubbed "Newcomers") who had been genetically engineered as slave laborers. The Newcomers are smarter and physically stronger than their human counterparts, which makes them more suitable to perform certain jobs, and the backlash against them from the human population is escalating daily. In this environment, Detective Sergeant Matt Sykes (James Caan) has his partner killed by one of the alien "slags", making it his mission to take down the ones responsible. He voluntarily requests to be partnered with the first Newcomer police detective, Sam Francisco (Mandy Patinkin) - Sykes calls him "George" instead, and while they haven't been specifically assigned the homicide case, Sykes won't stay off of it, employing Sam's help as needed in order to get to the bottom of the underworld slag crime syndicate. Directed by Graham Baker from a script by Rockne S. O'Bannon and an uncredited James Cameron.

Electrosonic made its name with its audiovisual solutions, but it also backs its solutions with managed services to support them. “Service used to be viewed as really an afterthought of supporting the client. You’d go and do the integration, figure out what they wanted from an SLA standpoint and do the service from there,” said Todd Miller, Electrosonic’s Director of Service Sales. “Today, it’s really a fully offered package where we’re offering the service as a built-in portion of the actual integration, itself.” The main parts of that package are Affinity, Panorama and Vista, with each giving customers a different component of support. Affinity helps maintain system functionality and uptime, taking issues out of house and making sure those keeping the products running are the ones most familiar with how they work. “If you don’t have the proper managed service package in place, it puts a strain on the relationship between the integrator, the product manufacturers and the client across the board,” Miller said. “We really connect the dots between AV and IT as an integrator and we connect the clients’ internal divisions, as well.” Panorama is another proactive method, allowing for remote monitoring of systems to reduce downtime and be able to solve a problem quickly when one occurs. Vista helps support the migration of on-site video conferencing systems to the cloud and also helps build digital infrastructure for the new hosted cloud video solution. “We spend a lot of our time thinking about these things and trying to solve customers’ problems,” said Graham Baker, the Technical Solutions Manager for Electrosonic. “Vista is about videoconference, primarily, but there’s a lot of things going on under the hood that support some of the needs of the client that are not immediately obvious.” That includes solving problems with how to join meetings, integrating the call with facilities in different meeting rooms or even different offices entirely and making the call seamless without a complicated login or invite code process. Affinity, Panorama and Vista all help make AV a process that can move to the back of mind, knowing it’s well-supported if something goes wrong.
