"Hope" is a 2026 South Korean epic science fiction action thriller film written, directed, and co-produced by Na Hong-jin ("The Wailing"). Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender, the film centers on a village police chief and his rookie deputy who must defend his local community from a mysterious creature after wildfires sever all communications, while a local hunting party finds itself being hunted deep in the mountains. The film premiered in the main competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or and received positive reviews, with special praise for Na Hong-jin's direction in action sequences. It's the sequel to "Practical Magic." But can Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman still cast a spell on us, 28 years later? Alonso had never seen the original movie, and Christy only saw it when it came out, so this was a good opportunity to revisit it. Griffin Dunne's film was not exactly a giant hit with critics or audiences back then, but it's gained a cult following over time, which we try to understand. Streaming and rentable. HOPE. This crazy, overlong Korean horror movie from writer-director Na Hong-jin played at the Cannes Film Festival and is now out there for you to enjoy, as well. A stranger enters their village and immediately things start to go awry. Families are found horrifically murdered, and people in the village seem to be changing. A Japanese man who lives in the forest is fingered as the culprit, but what is really going on? As Hyo-jin gets sick, father Jong-goo takes it on himself to solve the mystery surrounding what exactly is happening to their village. Review The Wailing was directed and written by Na Hong-jin and many have called it one of the most impressive horror movies of the last 20 years. I would call The Wailing the Indiana Jones of horror movies. It's constantly throwing new stuff your way. It's hard to know what's around the next bend, but you can bet that it will be exciting, terrifying, or totally shocking. More than that, it's an engaging labyrinth of a story that answers questions only to reveal more questions. Personally, this movie has been hyped for so long by so many that I came away a bit underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, it's a fine movie that's pretty interesting and it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. I just expected something so much more scary than this due to everyone's reaction to it and there's just no way it could deliver. There's also something of a cultural rift that I feel in The Wailing more so than in other foreign films.
