Today, I'm thrilled to announce my episode with star of stage and screen Allan Corduner, who just finished a run as Hume Cronyn in THE MOTIVE AND THE CUE on the West End. Tune in to hear some of the stories of his legendary career, including crawling on the floor with Barbra Streisand, the unique process of working with Mike Leigh on TOPSY TURVY, how a coffee with Bartlett Sher led to MY FAIR LADY, dealing with technical issues during TITANIC, the antisemitism he faced in the British entertainment world, working with Joseph Papp on SERIOUS MONEY, the actor who died during the table read of YENTL, why he was more impressed by John Gielgud than Laurence Olivier, working with Mike Ockrent on his theater debut, and so much more. You won't want to miss this interview with one of our most charming and delightful stars.
About a year ago, Bridget Fonda was a real dream lady to me. One of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen. I've felt that way since seeing Jackie Brown as a kid. Unfortunately, I keep watching awful movies with her in them and the magic is crumbling away. Bridget Fonda, Elias Koteas, Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, Maury Chaykin, Graham Greene and Don Mckellar are in this. You might ask how one could possibly go wrong with a cast like that. How could this film be anything but magical? Well, unless you're a Grandma in the mid 90s, you're probably gonna be befuddled. Tune in and find out the specifics. If you're enjoying this run, don't forget we have so very many episodes on Billy Crudup, John Cazale, Robert Longstreet, Radha Mitchell, Brandon Lee, Brad Pitt, Wesley Snipes, horror movies and now? Writer Ally Hord (Late Night with Seth Meyers) joins our Political Thriller series to discuss Alan J. Pakula's 1974 paranoia-fest, THE PARALLAX VIEW starring Warren Beatty, Hume Cronyn, and Paula Prentiss. Beatty stars as an investigative newspaper reporter uncovering a sinister shadow organization that specializes in political assassination. Released in the wake of several real life political assassinations and the Watergate scandal, THE PARALLAX VIEW typifies the stylish disillusionment of '70s era cinema, soberly shading an outlandish premise with cinematographer Gordon Willis's low-light moodiness. Join us as we contrast our different views on PARALLAX, along with diversions into Donald Trump, Home Improvement, the Burbank airport, The Paper, Harrison Ford, Glenn Close, and much, much more! THE PARALLAX VIEW is currently available to stream for free on Kanopy and PlutoTV.

We've got two stars for the price of one in each of these Suspense shows! For this bonus episode, I'm sharing my favorite installments of "radio's outstanding theater of thrills" that featured a pair of big name stars at the microphone. J. Carrol Naish and Joseph Cotten are hunter and hunted in "The Most Dangerous Game" (originally aired on CBS on February 1, 1945) and Hume Cronyn and Keenan Wynn hope a big bet will bail them out of trouble in "Double Entry" (originally aired on CBS on December 20, 1945). Vincent Price joins Lloyd Nolan on a "Hunting Trip" (originally aired on CBS on September 12, 1946) and walks the streets of London with Claude Rains in "The Hands of Mr. Ottermole" (originally aired on CBS on December 2, 1948). Finally, Fibber McGee and Molly are joined by an armed and unwelcome passenger in "Backseat Driver" (originally aired on CBS on February 3, 1949), and Phil Harris and Alice Faye try to escape a small town's harsh justice in "Death on My Hands" (originally aired on CBS on May 10, 1951).
This MGM 1946 Studios Year by Year episode is a Jules Dassin double feature that shows the range of the famed blacklistee even during his most constrained studio period: the noirish romantic drama Two Smart People, about two con artists (Lucille Ball and John Hodiak) and a cop who are all out to con each other; and the remarkable A Letter for Evie (starring Marsha Hunt and Hume Cronyn), a very postmodern (but also hilarious) deconstruction of gender conventions that's also a moving romance. We're wrapping up our first full week of THE LEFT HAND ENDEAVOR and you can call it a FEMME FATALE FRIDAY FEAST with a cold side of murder. The original platinum blonde, Lana Turner, is in deep with a wily drifter and they set in motion a plot of murder so that her sad sap husband can be out of the picture while they move on with their happy lives. We're talking about Tay Garnett's 1946 adaptation of the steamy James M. Cain novel “THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE”. It stars Lana Turner, John Garfield, Cecil Kellaway & Hume Cronyn. Will these tragic lovers find a way to be together or will their desperation be their undoing? Shout out to that cat, by the way. It really stole the show. Absolutely wild how it just climbed the step ladder like that. I love cats. They're always up to something. Welcome to this week's episode of “Friday Night Noir” on Vintage Classic Radio. We're delving into the shadows with two masterpieces of the thriller genre. First, we unearth a rare gem from the mid-1940s, “Once Upon a Midnight.” This untransmitted pilot from the proposed ABC Radio series featured the legendary Alfred Hitchcock as both host and narrator, drawing inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven." Although it never found a sponsor, the pilot, recorded on May 11th, 1945, remains a fascinating 'what could have been' in the annals of radio history. Based on Francis Iles' novel "Malice Aforethought," the episode stars the incredibly talented married duo, Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, who bring to life the story of a murderous doctor. The narrative, soaked in suspense and shock, showcases Hitchcock's unique approach to storytelling, where the music, composed by Felix Mills, punctuates the drama rather than merely bridging scenes. Then we turn the dial to October 4th, 1951, for an episode of "Suspense" titled "Alibi Me," featuring the indomitable Mickey Rooney. This story plunges us into the world of a small-time hoodlum who finds himself in desperate need of an alibi. The tension ratchets up as we follow his frantic efforts to secure his innocence. "Suspense" was a radio anthology series, renowned for its stellar storytelling and its ability to attract Hollywood's finest to the microphone. These audio plays are time capsules, capturing the essence of an era when radio was king, and the voices of the airwaves could conjure images as vivid as any on the silver screen. Join us as we step back in time and experience the chilling tales that had our grandparents clinging to every word. This is “Friday Night Noir,” where the dark corners of the human psyche are illuminated by the soft glow of the radio dial.

Trev was put up with a bad back over the weekend, and decided that it was a great time to revisit the 80's Ron Howard sci-fi fantasy Cocoon (1985), a Spielberg-esque film of wonder and sentiment, with lots of laughs along the way and great performances from its senior cast of Hollywood legends, past their sell-by date but still going strong. Actors such as Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Don Ameche, Jack Gilford, Wilford Brimley, and supported by a younger cast including Brian Dennehy and Steve Guttenberg. When a trio of elderly residents from a residential home break into the swimming pool of an abandoned house, they stumble across a group of alien cocoons, and the water they swim in has been filled with an exilir-like life source to preserve the ancient embrio's.Soon, the three elderly men have a new zest for life as the life source begins to work its magic. Book Vs. Movie: The Postman Always Rings TwiceThe James M. Cain 1934 Novel Vs. the 1946 Lana Turner Classic FilmThe Margos are feeling like a couple of femme fatales after reading the 1934 James M. Cain novel and watching the 1946 film The Postman Always Rings Twice for Book Vs Movie. We put on our white turbans and try to decide which is better in this film noir-loving episode. We covered Cain in our past episodes for Mildred Pierce and Double Indemnity and consider ourselves to be Cain fans! In this novel, Frank Chambers is a drifter who finds work in a California burger joint. The owner, Nick Papadakis (The Greek), is married to a beautiful, younger woman named Cora. Frank and Cora have a steamy affair with sex scenes and themes of violence causing it to be “banned in Boston.” It was also a smash hit that began Cain's literary career. There are those that say the plot resembles Emile Zola's novel Therese Raquin which neither one of the Margos has read. There are a few adaptations to pick from for this work but we prefer the 1946 Lana Turner & John Garfield version which is plenty sexy and is considered a classic for several legitimate reasons. First of all, Turner is at her hottest and leaves us breathless from her all-white wardrobe to her sly smile. Garfield (who would sadly pass away of a heart condition when he was just 39) is a sweaty mess of a man who looks like he would kill for this woman. Our thanks to our Mysterious Listener Kimberly for recommending this tale of a man who believes he can make a fortune from a slogan writing contest for toothpaste. First ever episode of Suspense!
Character actor Keenan Wynn returns for his final appearances on Suspense in a pair of shows that show of the silly and serious sides of "radio's outstanding theater of thrills." First, Wynn co-stars with Hume Cronyn in a comedic tale of embezzlement - "Double Entry" (originally aired on CBS on December 20, 1945). Then, he stars in "The Night Reveals," Cornell Woolrich's tale of an arson investigator hunting a firebug (originally aired on CBS on April 18, 1946). Plus, Wynn and Anne Baxter visit Charlie McCarthy and friends (originally aired on NBC on September 23, 1945).
Book Vs Movie: “A Streetcar Named Desire” The Tennessee Williams Play Song Vs the Elia Kazan Movie The Margos are feeling very fragile and need to take long, hot baths when discussing one of the greatest dramas of the 20th Century--A Streetcar Named Desire. The play by Tennessee Williams thrilled the Broadway stage in 1947 starring young buck Marlon Brandon who went full method with Kim Hunter, Jessica Tandy, and Karl Malden. The play is Williams's follow up to the incredible success of The Glass Menagerie in 1944 which was greatly based on his own life story. Williams grew up in an unhappy home and had family members with mental health issues. The writing was his escape and many of his characters tend to be lost souls who are searching for meaning and/or companionship. In post-World War 2 America, musicals were making the most money in New York theater but when A Streetcar Named Desire--audiences stood in lines for hours to watch Brando and his masculinity on full display. He was a fan of Stella Adler and her acting technique which as first scared Jessica Tandy (playing Blanche Dubois--an “aging” southern belle who is looking for help in a time of crisis.”) Her husband, fellow thespian Hume Cronyn convinced this type of drama will change theater forever. Taking place in New Orleans in 1947, Blanche Dubois is a woman who has just lost her family home in Laurel, Mississippi, and moves in with her younger sister Stella (Kim Hunter) and her brutish husband Stanley Kowalski. Brando plays Stanley as a cross between man & animal who resents his sister-in-law moving into their tiny home. The tension between Blanche & Stanley fuels most of the scenes and has consequences for everyone in their lives culminating in violence. The film was directed by Elia Kazan based mostly on his Broadway production though because of the Hays Code, many changes had to be made to make it “appropriate” for a 1950s movie audience. (There were no rating systems back then and movies were meant for a more general audience.) Most of the hyper-sexuality was toned down and were under the guise of symbolism to get their point across. It's one of the top dramas of all time and we really enjoyed digging into the changes with the film (which started with the casting of Vivien Leigh as Blanche who was thought to be more commercial than Jessica Tandy.) Book Vs Movie: “A Streetcar Named Desire” The Tennessee Williams Play Song Vs the Elia Kazan Movie The Margos are feeling very fragile and need to take long, hot baths when discussing one of the greatest dramas of the 20th Century--A Streetcar Named Desire. The play by Tennessee Williams thrilled the Broadway stage in 1947 starring young buck Marlon Brandon who went full method with Kim Hunter, Jessica Tandy, and Karl Malden. The play is Williams’s follow up to the incredible success of The Glass Menagerie in 1944 which was greatly based on his own life story.
In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 1985 American science-fiction comedy-drama film directed by Ron Howard. The story of the film revolves around a group of elderly residents from a retirement community in St. Petersburg, Florida, who start to feel rejuvenated after spending time in the swimming pool within the grounds of the house next door to their retirement home - which unbeknownst to them is being rented by four peaceful aliens (disguised as Humans) from the planet Antarea who have returned to Earth - upon which they had an outpost 10,000 years before - to retrieve twenty of their kin who were encased within rock-looking cocoons that now lie upon the ocean floor, which when retrieved are placed within the same swimming pool that the elderly residents enjoy swimming in, which, also unbeknownst to the elderly residents, has been charged with a "life force" that has many rejuvenating benefits for both Antarean and human biology. The film stars Don Ameche as Art Selwyn, Wilford Brimley as Ben Luckett, Hume Cronyn as Joe Finley, Brian Dennehy as Walter, Jack Gilford as Bernie Lefkowitz, Steve Guttenberg as Jack Bonner, Maureen Stapleton as Mary Luckett, Jessica Tandy as Alma Finley, Gwen Verdon as Bess McCarthy, Herta Ware as Rose Lefkowitz, Tahnee Welch as Kitty, Barret Oliver as David, as well as many other wonderful actors as some wonderfully memorable characters. And the memorable and beautiful soundtrack of the film was composed by the late-great film composer James Horner. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

Grab your swim trunks, we're going for a dip with COCOON! Directed by Ron Howard and starring the young and vivacious Wilford Brimley, as well as Hume Cronyn, Don Ameche, Jessica Tandy, Gwen Verdon and, yes, Steve Guttenberg, Cocoon tells the story of a group senior citizens who discover a fountain of youth in the neighbor's pool. Did we mention there's aliens? It's not just old people doing aqua-fitness for two hours, though that is a large part of it. In our day, this movie was a bigger hit than Quaker Oatmeal, but how does it hold up to our aged eyes? This week, Paul goes behind the curtain of three great Chicago productions. First, actress Tandy Cronyn (yes, she is the daughter of theater/movie legends Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn) appears in the one-person show “The Tall Boy” at Stage 773. This moving tale is told by the American matron of an orphanage for “unaccompanied children” […]
Character actor and occasional screenwriter Hume Cronyn (Shadow of a Doubt, Cocoon) returns to "radio's outstanding theater of thrills" in two stories of unhappy marriages that put the "death" in "till death do us part" - "The One Who Got Away" (originally aired on CBS on November 14, 1946) and "Make Mad the Guilty" (originally aired on CBS on June 5, 1947). Plus, we'll hear Cronyn and his real-life wife actress Jessica Tandy in the audition show for their own radio romantic comedy The Marriage.

Taking advantage of the chance to watch so many great films, this week week Ramos looks at the early career of Jules Dassin, a director who refused to name names during the McCarthy Era WitchHunts and was forced to emigrate to France where he became an even more successful director. On this episode we take a look at 1950's Night & the City featuring Richard Widmark, Gene Tierney, and Herbert Lom, as well as 1948's The Naked City starring Barry Fitzgerald, and - finally - 1947's Brute Force with commanding performances from Burt Lancaster and Hume Cronyn. Real-life married couple Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy star as Frank and Faye Riley, the owners of a small diner in a dilapidated building that also houses their apartment in the slums of Manhattan. The rest of the tenants of the building are being paid off to evacuate ASAP, so that greedy land developers can take over and demolish the building in order to erect some high-rise corporate edifices. Those that refuse are being threatened with injury “or worse” by some local thugs that are also on the corporate payroll to scare the bejesus out of the remaining tenants. Without anyone to turn to, a desperate plea may have saved the day, as a couple of miniature flying saucers arrive, consuming metal materials and then fixing up damaged parts of the building. The saucers befriend the remaining tenants, although the thugs and land developers are determined to put an end to this new development even if it costs lives in the process. Steven Spielberg produced this quaint sci-fi fairy tale.
Emmy winner Hume Cronyn was no stranger to thrills and chills. A frequent collaborator of Alfred Hitchcock, Cronyn played the scene stealing true crime buff in Shadow of a Doubt and helped with the story for Rope. He played many roles over his award-winning career, but his background with the master certainly must have helped prepare him for his work on Suspense. We'll hear him in "Too Many Smiths" (originally aired on CBS on June 13, 1946) and "Blue Eyes" (originally aired on CBS on August 29, 1946).
What's your favourite children's movie about impoverished elderly people living with dementia? This week on Beyond The Box Set, we're joined by the talented Phil Hepworth to discuss *batteries not included, a quirky family sci-fi that features some surprisingly adult and melancholy themes. Released in 1987, *batteries not included stars Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy as Frank and Faye Riley, a married couple whose long-time home comes under threat from aggressive property developers who want to force them out. As Faye's apparent dementia continues to worsen, Frank prays for a miracle - and gets one in the form of a pair of apparently sentient miniature spaceships known as 'The Fix-Its'. The film's unusually thoughtful tone might be down to writer Brad Bird, who went on to write and produce a number of Pixar's biggest hits including Ratatouille and The Incredibles. A modest hit on release, the film has become a minor cult classic, winning a then-septuagenarian Tandy a Saturn award for Best Actress. Join us as we discuss the colourful cast of characters - including a slogan-quoting former boxer and a short-fused gang leader with highly unusual fashion sense even for an eighties movie - attempt to figure out what the aliens/robots/spaceships are actually supposed to be in this movie and of course, pitch some sequel ideas... ----- Every week on Beyond The Box Set, we take a classic standalone movie and compete to pitch the most ridiculous sequel, prequel or spin-off ideas to bring them back to the big screen. While not his first American film, Shadow of a Doubt is arguably Hitchcock’s first “American” film--his first look at the darkness that lies just beneath the surface of an All-American city. And he begins populating his background with some of his wonderful eccentrics, in this case being Hume Cronyn and Henry Travers and their endless discussions about how to perfectly murder each other. And “Our Town”? Thornton Wilder both contributed to the screenplay as well as getting a special acknowledgment for his assistance.

In this 10-minute podcast, two of our community's best-known movie buffs, Frank Buxton and John Ellis, describe the upcoming "Film Noir" classic movie series they're hosting on six Tuesday evenings, starting Jan 17th. This is the sixth in the Art Museum's "smARTfilms" series, brought to us by these two seasoned film fans who are also buddies in the well-known local comedy troupe, The Edge Improv. The movies will be shown on the big bright screen of the Frank Buxton Auditorium (with its comfy cinema-style seating) at the Art Museum, and will be accompanied by optional dinner and drinks, plus post-movie conversation with Frank and John. As described by John and Frank in this podcast, recorded at Frank's home, the six films on six Tuesdays include: Jan 17: "M" (1931), directed by Fritz Lang, featuring Peter Lorre. Berlin's underworld, between two wars. Jan 24: "Shadow of a Doubt" (1943), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, with Teresa Wright, Joseph Cotton, Hume Cronyn. Jan 31: "The Big Sleep" (1946), featuring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, in their first film noir together. Feb 7: "The Third Man" (1949), directed by Carol Reed, with Orson Wells. A mystery about a death, and an investigation follows. Feb 14: "The Night of the Hunter" (1955), directed by Charles Laughton, with Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish. Evil machinations of a murderous "preacher". Feb 21: "Touch of Evil" (1958), directed by Orson Wells, starring Charlton Heston and Janet Leigh and Wells himself. A portrait of corruption and morally-compromised obsessions. The $10 tickets for each film (or $50 for the series of 6) can be purchased via the Art Museum website. And there is an optional pre-movie drinks and dinner session for an extra charge, with doors opening at 5:30 for the 6pm start of dining. Underappreciated Hitchcock - Our Old Movie Club, featuring classic films many of us haven’t seen selected just for us by Philip Michaels, is back! In this edition, we look at two underappreciated films of Alfred Hitchcock: 1943’s “Shadow of a Doubt” and 1948’s “Rope.” The former features Joseph Cotten shooting up through the ceiling of creepy, a battle of telepathy versus telegraphy, the special bond of people named Charlie, murder by soda, and an appearance by the Exposition Radio Network. The latter offers long unbroken scenes, drunk Farley Granger, a perfect murder perpetrated by Batman villains, and Jimmy Stewart as Columbo. Both films have Hitchcock in common, as well as Hume Cronyn… and murder! Host Jason Snell with Philip Michaels, Steve Lutz, Monty Ashley, Dan Moren, David J. Loehr and Andy Ihnatko.
Edward Albee’s 1966 play A Delicate Balance won him the first of his three Pulitzer Prizes. It has become one of his most highly regarded and frequently produced works, and returns for its third run on Broadway with one of the season’s starriest casts. Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy were the stars of the original production. George Grizzard and Rosemary Harris played the lead couple in the well-regarded revival in 1996. Now, as the play nears its 50th anniversary, John Lithgow and Glenn Close are the couple whose well-appointed suburban home takes in an alcoholic sister (Lindsay Duncan), a wounded daughter (Martha Plimpton) and friends (Clare Higgins and Bob Balaban), who bring with them an unknown fear. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood — without fear — considers the play and its new cast. The production, directed by Pam MacKinnon, runs through February at the John Golden Theatre.
Robert Whitehead and Brian Clark: In April of 1986, the day after their play The Petition, staring Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, began its short lived run on Broadway, writer/producer Brian Clark and producer/director Robert Whitehead sat down with colleague Robert Pesola to discuss bringing serious work to Broadway. The two frame the discussion somewhat ominously; beginning by acknowledging that in the 80's bringing a serious play to Broadway is somewhat of a "deadly" prospect. They cover the state of the theatre in America and the dearth of talented professional playwrights due to the draw of film and television. They candidly discuss the relevance of critics from the New York Times and their influence on the success of a show. Whitehead talks about theatre as a dicey investment and his methods for securing funds to produce shows. The pair concludes by demystifying the concept of a "Golden Age" of American theatre, explaining that in this industry there is always hardship. But, they resolutely maintain that even (and especially) in times of distress the theatre will and must go on. Originally recorded - April 1, 1986. Running Time - 1:16:25 ©1986 SDCF

In April of 1986, the day after their play "The Petition", staring Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, began its short lived run on Broadway, writer/producer Brian Clark and producer/director Robert Whitehead sat down with colleague Robert Pesola to discuss bringing serious work to Broadway.
