Two Philipstown residents want to scare you Sam Zimmerman loves Halloween. He really, really loves it. As the senior vice president of programming and acquisitions for Shudder, AMC Networks' streaming service, he has seen any frightening film you can mention - that's his job. It's also now a central part of his life at home. In February, he and his wife and their two young sons moved to Parrott Street in Cold Spring, the heart of the village's annual trick-or-treating ritual. Zimmerman likely didn't realize it, but another fright aficionado, Tore Knos, was already in place in Philipstown. In April, The New York Times called Knos' 2024 film, Snakeeater, one of "five horror films to stream now." Although horror is booming at the box office, and there are seemingly unlimited viewing options online, Zimmerman says he most enjoys introducing viewers to sub-genres like giallo (Italian horror from the 1970s, such as films by Dario Argento) or folk horror, such as The Wicker Man (1973) and Midsommar (2019). When Shudder launched, there weren't many boutique streaming services. As VP of programming, Zimmerman helps create collections so viewers "don't spend all their time browsing; they find things they want to watch and care about and explore within the genre. "You can continuously come up with different nooks and crannies," he says. "It's fun to create pathways, to be able to say, 'Here are five or 10 films within this genre,' with some classics and some undiscovered gems. You'll get a good sense of the hallmarks and tropes." The Washington Post last year called Zimmerman "the man who picks your nightmares." Zimmerman grew up in the Bronx and says he was probably too young when he became a horror fan, "but I couldn't help it." He read the Goosebumps series, as well as books and stories by Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. "I remember my dad showing me An American Werewolf in London and my grandmother buying me Psycho," he says. In 2004, while he was in high school, his mother, stepfather and two sisters moved to Cold Spring. He would visit often, and the family hit Parrott Street at Halloween. At SUNY Purchase, Zimmerman majored in cinema studies and interned in New York City at Fangoria. "I stuck around the office until they hired me," he says. "I started going to film festivals and understood my interest was in programming, development, acquisition and production." In 2014, he became a consultant to the fledgling Shudder, then joined full-time. His focus initially was on building the catalog by licensing classic and cult films. "There were all these films that, at the time, hadn't streamed," he recalls. "I knew this was our opportunity to showcase movies that had a reputation or had been celebrated but that most people hadn't been able to see." One example: Andrzej Zulawski's Possession (1981), which had limited home video distribution. In 2016, Shudder began producing new films. Some highlights: Host, which was made quickly during the pandemic, about teens who conduct a Zoom seance (what could go wrong?), A Violent Nature ("something of an art house reinvention of what a slasher film is") and Oddity, an Irish film about a blind medium. "In some ways, horror is one of the oldest forms of storytelling," Zimmerman says. "There have always been scary stories and cautionary tales, so there's something primal there. Even intellectual horror movies are trading on instinct and provocation. They reflect our anxieties at any given moment. But they're also fun, with that satisfaction of getting a thrill." When Tore Knos needed moody, misty footage for Snakeeater, which is available on Amazon Prime, he didn't have to go far. Much of the film was set in a shadowy New York City. But he realized, during editing, that he needed a "pillow shot" to create atmosphere. "I needed a shot looking up into the fog," he recalls. "One day it was super foggy, so I drove under the Bear Mountain Bridge and got a great shot." While re...
This week, we're watching Andrzej Zulawski's Possession (1981) and William Friedkin's Bug (2006), two movies that test the limits of love and madness. These films take the 'will they/won't they' trope to new heights by asking not whether our two leads will finally hook up, but rather: Will these two people kill each other by the time the credits roll? *Apologies for the audio: I tried recording in the car & tweaked the sound as best as possible.*POSSESSION is simply a feel-bad movie. Andrzej Zulawski's chaotic magnum opus of divorce, abuse and horny tentacled fucks has to be seen to be believed. For those who grew up with Sam Neill as the heroic Dr. Alan Grant in JURASSIC PARK, prepare to have your childhood chewed up, spit out and bombed. This is a movie I don't often understand but within its swirling camera movements, frenetic performances and sickening score I relish. It's a movie made to be discussed for hours after every viewing, a communal experience built out of our human need to try and explain what in the flying fuck we just witnessed was.If you're into the two mighty Davids, Cronenberg & Lynch, this movie's gonna be your new freak flag to fly. Let's talk about it.---Follow, rate and review THE MOVIES wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow THE MOVIES on Instagram, Bluesky & Letterboxd

We're kicking off our INTERNATIONAL EEKS triple feature with Andrzej Żuławski's 1981 cult classic Possession. Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani's infamous Berlin breakdown becomes the backdrop for one of cinema's strangest monsters—a slimy, seductive tentacled being. We dig into the film's 6 monster reveals, the unforgettable subway scene, the Cold War paranoia beneath the story, and how themes of love, control, and identity feed into the horror. In our conversation on Possession, we found a great balance of serious analysis and our usual off-the-rails banter. From James Bond to human dildos, we explore what makes this monster introduction so disturbing and iconic.

Welcome to *Making Me Watch Movies*, the podcast where we force each other to endure films we'd never pick ourselves—and then argue about whether it was genius or just plain traumatizing. And oh boy, does today's pick deliver on the trauma. This week, we're wrestling with Andrzej Żuławski's 1981 nightmare fuel, *Possession*—a film so batshit it was banned as a ‘video nasty,' features Isabelle Adjani screaming her way into horror history, and includes… whatever *that thing* in the apartment is. Is it a metaphor for divorce? A Cold War allegory? Or did the director just hate his audience? One thing's certain: we'll never look at raw meat, subway tunnels, or marriage the same way again. So grab a stiff drink (you'll need it), and join us as we try to unpack this unhinged cult classic. What goes bump in the night giving Kyle a fright? This week it's Possession (1981) written and directed by Andrzej Zulawski. This Polish film has a husband and wife painfully, violently flail their way through a divorce with lovers and creatures looming. How traumatic is a breakup? Was the monster real? Why is Kyle at odds with all of Hollywood (and Chris)? Don't spill the milk as the Boo Boys break it all down.

The "best sci-fi film" never made? That's what Andrzej Zulawski's project has been called. Shut down by the Polish government before production had finished in 1977, the film wasn't completed and released until 1987. It's a visually stunning and wildly ambitious exploration of myth, religion and being human in an alien world. Zulawski (1940-2016) studied cinema in France and became known for art-house films working with actresses including Romy Schneider, Isabelle Adjani and Sophie Marceau. Matthew Sweet and his guests Daniel Bird, Sarah Dillon and David Hering, have been watching On the Silver Globe.Producer: Torquil MacLeod

In this episode, The FM3 have their poison served up warm and squiggly by a wonderful top level Patron from Patreon. The poison in this case is the polarizing 1981 film "Possession" by writer/director Andrzej Zulawski. Jef, Josh and Brian are finally ready to tackle this legendary movie at least in the public's ears. They may have recorded an episode talking about this very movie some time back and it was lost in the fog and sadness of different days. That being said, If you happen to be a patron on Patreon, that original recording will be getting uploaded and then you will get to hear the crew's initial reactions and feelings as they were also having a tough day at the old podcasting office. This is one of those films that will forever change you- good or bad, It WILL change you. Some folks end up not liking it which is understandable and other folks will end up obsessed digging into the dark depths of the interwebs for any tiny nugget of insight into this crazy ass film.
The 2 Guys continue their October celebration with Hodgepodge Halloween. James Cameron-Wilson continues to marvel at Barbie, #1 for 6 weeks with a total of £90m, making it the 7th highest grossing UK film. Oppenheimer is steady at #2 with £54m. Theater Camp, a mockumentary, limped in at #15. James found it unrealistic and less funny than it thinks it is, but with great child performances. Underwater thriller The Dive was #20 but, though diverting, pales beside others in that genre. James was more impressed with Eureka's Masters of Cinema box set of Andrzej Zulawski, including The Third Part of the Night, Devil, On The Silver Globe and a documentary. Cineastes should love it. It's 1981, and things are not okay. Seemingly normal people are doing some pretty messed up things. One might even describe these acts as...nasty.A picturesque coastal town is the setting for the local residents to just kill people off whenever they feel like it. The local sheriff does his best to solve these mysterious deaths, but who can he trust? Especially when the mortician seems so into the art of perfectly preserving these corpses. You may not want to visit Potter's Bluff, or you could run the risk of becoming Dead & Buried (1981). A divided Berlin becomes the backdrop for a family drama. Certainly no elements of horror here. Not at all. The intense, explosive, at times, end of a relationship, and the disconcerting beginning of another. But what is that thing that Anna has in that apartment? And why has she become so obsessed? Possession (1981) has scenes that must be seen to be believed. And then from there, it's the Common Craig's Top 5 list of horror movies from 1981! The Summer of the 80s is really just getting underway.

Oof. This one is a wild ride. Our wonderful hosts get real depressed for a change as they review Andrzej Zulawski's “Possession”. Pedido do nosso apoiador Raphael Braga.
