In 2002, Robin Williams was in his era of playing against type with roles in the Christopher Nolan thriller Insomnia, and in this film about a lonely photo minilab employee who becomes obsessed with a young family. Co-starring Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, and Gary Cole, this pic written and directed by Mark Romanek succeeded critically and commercially, and it was also the only film that Robin Williams ever recorded a DVD commentary for. Now we're seeing what develops when we take a closer look at One Hour Photo! Say cheese! ITHACON 48 is April 5-6, 2025, at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY! One Hour Photo follows Sy, a photo technician, as he forms an obsession with the Yorkin family before taking it upon himself to avenge his shattered fantasy and lost childhood innocence. In the accompanying podcast, Madeleine West shows how Romanek skillfully extends this film's sense of unease into its cinematography and mise-en-scène, delving into the intricate depths of the human mind, exploring themes of obsession, isolation and voyeurism. This podcast discusses portrayals of mental health within cinema while looking towards this film's visuals as a way of depicting isolation and loneliness.

She continuously challenges herself by taking on projects that explore new expressions of her creativity. In 2018, she made her New York City Metropolitan opera debut, designing Nico Muhly's opera, Marnie. Miuccia Prada selected Phillips for her Iconoclasts project; to curate installations for the brands flagship stores in London and Beijing which included a short fashion film for the brand, which Phillips wrote and directed, called Passages. Pictures. He was nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography for the 2019 film Joker, directed by Phillips. As cinematographer of the 2009 film The Hangover, Sher described how a scene early in the movie shows the main characters on the roof of their hotel overlooking a stereotypical shot of the Las Vegas Strip; Sher indicated that he had tried to evoke the behind-the-scenes Vegas—after the characters wake up the following morning—by shooting a scene behind the hotels where the real action takes place. Actor Bradley Cooper credited Sher's visual style with enhancing the film's comedy, noting how Sher has "a great eye, a lot of energy and he just knows what's funny" and that "Some guys just can't shoot comedies, but Larry knows exactly what he's doing." With the success of Zach Braff's Kickstarter, Sher worked on Braff's 2014 feature, Wish I Was Here. In January 2020, Sher was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the movie Joker, but lost to Roger Deakins for 1917.

Tune in as Tyler Hewitt (Dumb-Dumbs & Dice) makes his long-awaited return to the program for a review and recap of One Hour Photo, the 2002 film that presents plenty of stalkery suspense and a nostalgic freeze-frame of the antiquated era of photo processing. The masterful skill that Robin Williams shows off in his against-type performance as lonesome photo lab tech Sy Parrish, the numerous times when this movie sneaks in brand licensing, the questionable stab that Matthew McConaughey has been taking at the self-help industry, and the irritation that Tyler expresses toward implausible workplace behavior in the film comprise some of the talking points for this episode. Written and directed by Mark Romanek, One Hour Photo stars Robin Williams, Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, Dylan Smith, Gary Cole, Erin Daniels, Clark Gregg, Eriq La Salle, Paul Kim Jr., Nick Searcy, and Jim Rash. Jules and I continue the Keith Gordon filmography and we're talking about the 9th film in the run, 1985's "Static". Keith is a dang shining star in this, a quirky 90s comedy about weirdos that came out in the mid 80's. He works in a crucifix factory, his cousin is a street preacher/hustler/doomsday enthusiast with two weird kids who wear lizard masks and fallout suits while drinking tang, and his maybe love interest left a dope punk band to hang out in a garbage town with a fish shaped diner while Keith gets ready to unveil his life's work: a TV where you can see heaven. I want to say it's weird this has no real cult imprint, but Mark Romanek, who directed and co-wrote with Gordon, doesn't acknowledge it and they missed a decent distribution offer in the days before they were scooping up indie movies left and right. Nowadays you can find a bootleg vhs on Amazon or watch a laserdisc rip on youtube (there's a link in our YouTube page). Get your Keith on while you can (we're getting close to the end) and then rate, review, subscribe, email, socialize with us and maybe call the hotline! What, you don't know where all our stuff is? So you want to make music videos. Want to follow in the foot steps of David Fincher, Mark Romanek and Spike Jonez? It's not a bad plan at all. Many filmmakers start off in music videos. It's a great place to get experience, learn the tools and experiment.I've directed a few music videos in my day and have worked in some capacity on hundreds over the years. I wanted to do an episode where I breakdown my process for making a music video. The music video in question is for the band Ozomatli and the stand up comic Gabriel Iglesias aka Fluffy.Gab and I have done a few projects together over the years, two of which were music videos, Hey It's Fluffy and Stand Up Revolution.I had an absolute ball shooting both. Today we will be dissecting Stand Up Revolution, which was for his Comedy Central show "Gabriel Iglesias Presents: Stand-Up Revolution." It was a large production for me and I learn a ton.Take a listen!
Design in Motion: Film Experiments at the Bauhaus (MIT Press, 2022) provides the first comprehensive history of film experiments at the Bauhaus, the famous art school that operated between 1919 and 1933 and was located in Weimar, before moving to Dessau and later to Berlin. While the Bauhaus is commonly associated with the development of modern architecture and industrial design, Design in Motion focuses on film, and demonstrates how the cinematic medium became a proving ground for some of the school's most innovative work. Laura Frahm is John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Humanities at the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard University. Frahm's work explores film and media through the lens of architecture, design, spatial theory, ecological thought, and process philosophy. In addition to her latest book Design in Motion: Film Experiments at the Bauhaus (2022), she is the author of Beyond Space: Cinematic Topologies of the Urban (2010), Moving Spaces: Spatial Configurations in Music Videos by Jonathan Glazer, Chris Cunningham, Mark Romanek, and Michel Gondry (2007) and Introduction to Media Cultural Studies (co-edited, 2005).

Remember when taking pictures required the use of an actual CAMERA and how the best way to see the fruits of your labor was to have them developed as PHOTOS? Well even if you don't, it wasn't that long ago before the age of smartphones – this film actually came out just twenty years ago and features at its center, one unique individual whose job is to develop these pictures for the general public. His name is Seymour Parrish (otherwise known to others as “Sy the Photo Guy") and he was played by the late, great Robin Williams in what many consider to be among his best dramatic performances. Running a photo lab at the local Sav-mart, Sy loves his job and is also obsessed with the photos of one particular local nuclear family…the Yorkins who are played by Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, and Dylan Smith. And of course, this obsession takes on unhealthy levels as Sy becomes more involved in the lives of this family. What results is a tense, little thriller/character piece filled with striking visuals thanks very much to the talent of director Mark Romanek who after years of directing memorable music videos made this his feature directorial debut.Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
It's not often that you come across a song that seemingly transcends time and space when performed by two different artists. It's even more interesting when those two artists are on the complete opposite ends of the musical spectrum. You might be wondering what the hell I am even talking about, and before you swerve off the road in a podcast rage, let me explain. In 1994 Trent Reznor and his band Nine Inch Nails would release The Downward Spiral (also known to NIN fans as Halo 8). The final track on the album would tell a dark weathered story about drug addiction and self-harm. Trent doesn't divulge much information about the reasoning behind the writing of his songs, as he wants to leave it up to the interpretation of the listener, but it's rumored that this song was written in retrospect. But when listening it certainly seems that Trent was writing about something he knew a little something about from being thrust into superstardom and getting buried within the darkness that is the music industry. Whether it's an autobiographical tale or just a story about a friend of a friend, it certainly hits home for those that can relate to it. Fast forward to 2002, and the last person you'd ever expect to find himself near a Nine Inch Nails track would lend his iconic vocals to his own version of the song, helped along (or hindered) by Rick Rubin lending his production skills to the reworked track. People at first were quite skeptical because your average Johnny Cash fan has not a clue who Trent Reznor or the Nine Inch Nails are. Hell, Trent Reznor was even skeptical about Johnny Cash covering his work because of the potential for it to add a gimmicky value. It turns out that Rick Rubin might have figured out something that no one else had at the time. This version of the song felt like a window into Johnny Cash's past where he also struggled with many of the same things that Trent had throughout the years, just for much, much longer. A true retrospective view on a tattered and torn life in the music industry. Johnny Cash's version of this already iconic song would eventually be considered one of his greatest works. Its accompanying video, featuring images from Cash's life and directed by Mark Romanek, was named the best video of the year by the Grammy Awards and CMA Awards, and the best video of all time by NME in July 2011. Hurt (Cash's Version) would go on to sell 2,148,000 downloads in the United States as of March 2017. To say that it made a huge impact, would I think be putting it quite lightly. When all is said and done there are just some covers that hit the nail on the head, and this happens to be one of them. It's season 6, episode 7 of your (yes, you the listeners) favorite music podcast. Hell, maybe it's even your favorite weekly podcast to listen to overall. If that's the case, we're not sure what else to say besides THANK YOU. One Hour Photo (2002), directed by Mark Romanek, is our second Robin Williams film, but he's not the nudeman. Romanek has only directed 3 films, and this is his second. I wish we had more Romanek in our cinemas, but until then we'll need to treasure this one. I would be surprised if you haven't seen it, but we had a fantastic time talking about it.It's streaming on HBO Max (at least as of 11/29/2021)!

After a teenage publishing career of film fandom and criticism, Sam Irvin's first professional job came on the set of Brian De Palma's The Fury. Quickly, and for the next few years, he would become De Palma's assistant and a jack of all trades on movies from Fury to Dressed to Kill, before starting his own directing career and eventually coming back to film writing. On today's episode, joined once again by Ted Haycraft, we discuss:- Irvin's early career writing about Hammer films and interviewing actors like Vincent Price and Emma Peel;- his first contact with De Palma, then casting Carrie alongside George Lucas (who was then casting Star Wars) by inviting him to a film festival at his college;- and how that led to Irvin braving a phone call asking to work on The Fury.Also:- Interacting with the established crew for The Fury's Chicago crew;- why it's difficult to see the first film one worked on objectively;- his work with a young filmmakers Mark Romanek and Keith Gordon on Fury, Home Movies, and Dressed to Kill;- how Irvin progressed this to his first short and feature films.Sam Irvin is a veteran director, producer and screenwriter for movies and television who began his career as the assistant to Brian De Palma.
