In Part 4 of the Spiritual Disciplines series, Caleb and Lindsey discuss the command to Christians to steward God's blessings well. In this episode, wealth is defined from a biblical perspective. In addition to financial gain, biblical wealth also includes children. Children are a wealth to their parents, not a drain on resources as our world would have one think! Join Caleb and Lindsey in this conversation about gaining a vision, taking control of your finances, and seeking to build your wealth with a mind to bless your children and your children's children. Also, in this episode time is dedicated to discuss a biblical view of tithes and offerings and their proper place in the Christian life. Season 2 on the Reformed Faith and Family Podcast is all about being intentional as a Christian. In Part 3 of the Spiritual Disciplines series, Caleb and Lindsey discuss the need for Christians to practice evangelism and service as a lifestyle. Many Christians do not know how to begin a conversation about Christ with another person they don't know, or how to serve others within their church or community without a church program to facilitate their spiritual gifts. These spiritual disciplines are not optional, but should be an integral part of everyday life for the Christian not only initiated on a limited basis. Listen in to learn how this is possible in this episode. Season 2 on the Reformed Faith and Family Podcast is all about being intentional as a Christian.

STRENGTH IN SOLITUDEPastor Jessica Fernandez, Ph.DSeptember 11, 2022There are many times in life when we experience loneliness - times when we feel alone, empty, and disconnected. On the contrary, solitude is a sense of deep connection with our God where we find a sense of belonging. Jesus often spent time in silence and solitude to encounter the Father. Loneliness is dependent on what is happening around us, whereas solitude is time alone that is focused solely on our dependence on God. In times of loneliness, encountering the Father produces strength in solitude.1. SOLITUDE IS GOD'S REMEDY FOR LONELINESS.“Like many other feelings in our lives, it's easier to experience it than to define it. Loneliness is being all by yourself even when you're surrounded by people. Loneliness is a feeling of isolation even in the midst of a crowd. You feel unwanted. You feel unneeded. You feel as though there's nothing to live for. You feel as though nobody really cares anymore. That's loneliness. Loneliness eats away at the inner person. It saps you of strength. It robs you of hope, Loneliness, as it were, puts a wall around you no matter how free you may be.”- Warren Wiersbe2. LONELINESS IS NOT BEING ALONE, BUT FEELING ALONE. You can BE alone and not FEEL lonely at all.“I found solitary confinement the most forbidding (hostile) aspect of prison life. There is no end and no beginning; there is only one's mind, which can begin to play tricks. Was that a dream or did it really happen? One begins to question everything.” - Nelson Mandela “Solitude is a gift from God, but isolation is a tool of the enemy.” - Carey Nieuwhof3. IN TIMES OF LONELINESS, ENCOUNTERING THE FATHER PRODUCES STRENGTH IN SOLITUDE.“If we possess inward solitude we do not fear being alone, for we know that we are not alone. Neither do we fear being with others, for they do not control us. In the midst of noise and confusion, we are settled into a deep inner silence. Whether alone or among people, we always carry with us a portable sanctuary of the heart.” - Richard Foster• If Jesus, the son of God, the savior of the world had made time to connect with God, without distractions, how much more do we need to be practicing the spiritual discipline of solitude?• If time with God is so important and beneficial - why is it so hard?“Solitude is the Spiritual Discipline of voluntarily and temporarily withdrawing to privacy for spiritual purposes. The period of solitude may last only a few minutes or for days. As with silence, solitude may be sought in order to participate without interruption in other Spiritual Disciplines, or just to be alone with God.”- Donald S. Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life4. IN THE BUSYNESS AND CRAZINESS OF OUR LIVES, HOW CAN WE DISCONNECT AND UNPLUG TO PRACTICE SOLITUDE?---DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. Have there been times when you thought you were engaging in solitude and you were actually isolating yourself?2. Have there been specific times when engaging in solitude gave you the strength to deal with certain situations? Or, has God revealed to you areas in your life that need to be dealt with?3. What are some strategies you can implement in your life to increase time in solitude?https://www.springcreekchurch.org/#realspringcreekchurch #strengthinsolitude #solitude #loneliness #lonely #God #connection #belonging #strength

Tom Tarrants observes that God desires an intimate, personal relationship with His children and calls us to know, love and serve Him and His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. As we do so, we will experience joy and delight. One of the means by which we can grow closer to God is by setting aside time each day to quietly read and reflect on God’s Word, lift our prayers to Him, and give thanks and praise to Him for who He is and for His goodness to us. In this article, Tarrants offers helpful suggestions that will aid you in developing your daily time with God and growing to know Him better and love Him more. Read this article online. There was a day not so long ago when, if we started talking about the practice of daily prayer and the importance of it, I would bristle. About twelve years ago, I had a reckoning with this. God showed me my own gifts were not enough. About that time, I hired a coach and, of all the things he taught me, the one that changed my life forever was the habit of daily prayer. As one writer says (and I totally believe): “Without exception, the men and women I have known who've made the most rapid, consistent, and evident growth in Christlikeness have been those who develop a daily time of being alone with God. This time of silence is devoted to Bible intake and prayer, and in this solitude they enjoy an occasion of private worship.” (Donald S. Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life) This Sunday we start a new series called Habits of Grace. If you are really interested in becoming more like Jesus, this is the series for you. The way God transforms believers is through habits. That might not sound very exciting, but I would challenge you to look at any person at the zenith of their craft and what you will find is a lifestyle of formation via ordinary habits that help train either the mental or physical competencies. Repetition, over and over again, “wax off, wax on.” And while today we have turned formation into a 12-minute Ted Talk, we all know that is about as superficial as it gets. And yet somehow we think that little bit of information will transform us. For the next ten weeks, we will talk about nine habits of grace that will shape us into disciples who love God, love people, and love life. One word of warning: if you are looking for another path—there is no other path! I look forward to seeing you Sunday. It has been over a month since I have been with you in the pulpit, and I am straining at the bit. I have learned much from God putting me on the DL, and I can say he really has “sanctified to me, my deepest distress.” May we all see his goodness in these crazy times, when everyday seems like it brings a new pivot! Blessings, Jim

Spiritual disciplines—like fasting, biblical meditation, and the like—have a reputation as being only for super spiritual people. Au contraire, we say! While they can be difficult and require, well, discipline in order to do, they are also incredibly valuable for living the Christian life—in our technological age, one might say now more than ever. We have a special guest on today's episode, Pastor Mike Plummer. Mike is the pastor at Fillmore Baptist Church in Fillmore, IL. As we've visited Mike's church over the years, we've become big fans of his passion for and focus on biblical teaching. Today, Mike paints a great picture for us as he explains some parallels between physical training and training for godliness. Physical training requires us to sweat, and training for godliness is no different. It will take some “spiritual sweat.” Join us as we learn what it means to truly train for godliness and why it matters. During our conversation, Mike mentioned the book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald S. Whitney. You can find it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1615216170

This is such an important and timely conversation. Joil reminds us that every Christian has a mission, no one is called to sit on the bench. We also dive into God's power amidst pain and suffering. Suffering for God is purposeful pain, more on that in the episode... Having Joil Marbot around the table with us this month was such a privilege. Joil is an Assemblies of God missionary to the great country of Ecuador with an incredible heart for spiritual formation and the deep things of God. It's only when Jesus is the prize that sanctification is happening. As a Christian you are counted as righteous because of Christ, not of anything you've done right or wrong in this life. But now begins a different work, that of sanctification. What does this mean and what does it look like in our life? Let's explore it today! Jasmine: Like how morbid is this getting? Portia: I mean, it's gotten pretty bad, to the point where I feel like I'm relatively concerned as a believer. I don't have a lot of expectations when it comes to the world. But when it comes to believers, it's like, "Oh, fam, like, what are you doing?" ---------- Praying the Bible by Donald S. Welcome back! This week we’re going to talk about letting God use us to make disciples. This episode was actually going to be a stand-alone episode on discipling others, but I realized that part of being a disciple, which is what the last two episodes were about, is letting God use us to make disciples. Jesus says that part of our being disciples is to make more disciples. This is called the Great Commission; it is found in Matthew chapter 28 verses 18-20 and is usually paired with the great commandment we talked about in the episodes on the Law of Love. 'And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.' One of the biggest misconceptions of this verse is that only people who are missionaries can do this. You Don’t Have To Be A Missionary When Christ says, “Go to all nations” he doesn’t mean the only way to make disciples is to go to other lands. 99.99% of all Christians in the early church, and since then I assume, never went anywhere but their hometown and the church multiplied. Yes, some people will go and start churches in other lands, but most will be witnesses in their own city, town, or even on their own block. If we all went somewhere else, no one would be here. So please don’t think you have to be a missionary to make disciples. Sometimes it’s easier to go and make disciples than it is to be a disciple. What we teach most of the time is our personal opinion or the tenants of our theology. While neither one of these is bad, neither of them has the power to change like a relationship with Christ does. Whether we go abroad or stay at home, when we begin to make disciples, we shouldn’t rely on our own knowledge and abilities. As with all parts of our lives, we rely on the guidance and leadership of the Holy Spirit. Jesus says that when we go out to make disciples he is with us always and forever. If we try to do it in our own power, we end up like the Pharisees and make children of hell (Matthew 23:15) because we are teaching them to follow us or a certain dogma and not Christ. Disciples Want To Make Disciples I talked about this in the last two episodes so I’ll just touch on it again. If we are not being disciples, we can’t expect Christ to use us in making more disciples. We can’t give away something we don’t have. Start with the basics, read the bible, and pray every day. We have to start where we are. Don’t start with 2 hours of bible reading and prayer because that will last about two days. Start where you are and grow from there. You may want to start learning about other spiritual disciplines. There are several great books you can find on spiritual disciplines. My three favorites are The Spirit of the Disciplines by Dallas Willard. Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald S. Whitney. The best, in my opinion, is Richard Foster’s Celebration of Discipline. (Affiliate Links) When God is working in our lives through the Holy Spirit we will have a desire to walk the road of spiritual formation with other people. I used to get frustrated at pastors who would expect everyone to be out saving the lost. They would say that you “MUST witness for Christ” or you “SHOULD share the gospel with everyone you meet.” It doesn’t work that way. We can’t give away something we don’t have I heard a pastor tell a story about leaving a church service and going out to witness to a person on December 31st because he had set a goal to witness to 301 people that year. He had only witnessed to 300 people and he had to reach his goal so he could be an example to his church. We don’t have to force the process. As we begin to grow in God, people will see the change in us.

Discipline for the Christian is a must! Think of it this way, we need "spritiual disciplines for the Christian life." I didn't think up this phrase. It's actually the title of a book in my library. The authors are Donald S. Whitney and the forward is by J. I. Packer, two writers with whom we are very familiar. The word "discipline" can carry a negative connotation and brings to mind punishment. While growing up, I was diciplined by my parents. Even today, I am still being disciplined by my Heavenly Father to whom I belong. Hebrews 12:11 (NIV) says, "No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." Discipline also means teach, coach, and drill. Those words shed light on what we must consider doing to grow in godliness. Join us Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at 3:30 PM, PST.We will talk about practicing 10 basic spiritual disciplines that will help us get out of the weeds so we can start producing a harvest. Stewardship is managing the time, talents, and treasures that God has given to us FOR the glory of God during our days here on earth. We have great freedoms, joy, and some hard work as faithful stewards and today we are talking about the home and motherhood and five principles of good stewardship in these areas. It’s one of those practical episodes. This is part 2 of a 2 part series. Try Audible (we LOVE audible) and get two free books and a free month: Stewardship in the Home There are two important passages of scripture that point to us learning to be good stewards of the home: Titus 2:3-5 the Greek word for home is oikouros meaning caring for or working at the home For women, biblically, there is a homeward orientation 1 Timothy 5:14 And whether widows or not, we see instruction here for women - marry, bear children, and manage their household the Greek word used for household is oikodespoteo - is to manage family affairs There is a charge her for women to manage or STEWARD their household and care for the needs of the home and those in the home. 5 Principles of Stewardship in our Home 1. Order our days right by putting God first Make reading the Word and prayer a priority in your day Prayer shows are dependence on the Lord "Prayer is not so much an act as it is an attitude—an attitude of dependency, dependency upon God." - A.W. Pink Deuteronomy 6:6-9 We must learn the Lord's commands too, not just expect our children to learn them. Family Worship - read the Word with your kids - sing with them When you don't "feel" like reading the Bible - repent! When you don't have time, make time later 2. Steward our attitudes We create the atmosphere of our home - it can be one of joy or eggshells We need to manage our hearts and tongues - Luke 6:45, Ephesians 4:29, Colossians 3:16 Repent quickly, forgive quickly, be thankful, rejoice, sing! 3. Steward our time well by being diligent hard workers hard work is hard, it's not a bad thing idleness is shunning labor, it's a laziness idleness leads to sins like being busybodies and gossips - 1 Timothy 5 "She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." Proverbs 31:27 Don't expend our time and energy on unfruitful and unproductive things (like social media or pet causes, or waiting for things to direct our day) Pray about your tasks as you move about your day 4. Steward our home well by being prepared 1 Samuel 25 Abigail was prepared Be prepared in our hearts to give and be generous, to practice hospitality Prepare by meal planning or having food to nourish our families well 5. Head in the right direction Wisdom from Kristina from https://www.bear-squirrel.com/ We may not know what to do in a certain situation - but we can head in the right direction. If we are in the Word we know things we can do that will help us even if we're not sure exactly what to do Do each day what we DO know how to do Take heart in these truths - that what you do matters and God will give you the grace to carry on. He is FOR us in the stewardship of His things. He wants us to succeed. Take heart in Titus 2 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. On today’s episode of Journeywomen, I chatted with my former pastor and friend Brad Evangelista about spiritual disciplines. Ya’ll, I cried twice in this episode! That’s a first for me! Brad and I talked about everything from the goal of practicing the spiritual disciplines to how doing so will flesh itself out differently based on our season of life. Hello, mamas! This quote brought on the waterworks, “There’s a 25 or maybe 30-year-old mom that may be listening to this and right now one of the fruits that God is building in her life is not feelings of awesomeness, but right now he’s developing in her life spiritual grit. He’s putting calluses, spiritually speaking, on her hands, so that when she is a 55 or 60 year-old-woman 20 or 30 years from now, she’s going to be able to come alongside a young, tired, struggling, frustrated, mom and say, ‘Sister, you’re going to make it,’ and that’s the fruit that God is producing and anchoring and digging deep into a young woman’s life right now. And the thing is, I would say to that sister is just, ‘Hold on, the harvest will come in and through your life of godliness, but it takes time! It takes time.’” I hope that you guys find this conversation as encouraging and grace-filled as I did. BRAD’S RESOURCES Spiritual Disciplines by Donald S. Today we are talking about how to cultivate prayer, both in our personal spiritual lives and in the church body. A couple of years ago, we taught on prayer at our men's retreat. The most helpful resource we have found for cultivating a stronger prayer life is called Praying the Bible by Donald S. Whitney. He teaches a simple method for using the words of scripture to guide prayer, which we spent time studying and practicing. Many of the men in the church have reported stronger prayer habits after changing their method of prayer to include praying through scripture. We also share some practical tips on prayer. For example, try walking to help stay focused during prayer time. Leave your e-mail and the news until after you spend time with the Lord. Recognize that you won't have soul-stirring experiences every day, and remember that the daily discipline still produces growth. Set aside times for intentional prayer, but also be ready to pray spontaneously throughout the day.
Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today I speak with Don Whitney about his book Family Worship (Crossway, 2016). Here's the ground we cover in this conversation: Don, we last spoke in September of 2015 about your book Praying the Bible. Give us an update on some of what has been keeping you busy since then. (00:35 - 01:51) Next let's get into the story behind the book. How did the idea for Family Worship get its start. (01:52 - 04:32) Give us some examples of family worship that are found in the Bible. (04:33 - 10:09) Next talk to us about some of the places we see family worship popping up throughout church history. (10:10 - 16:30) As we're looking to bring family worship into our homes, what are the key elements of family worship that we should be thinking about? (16:31 - 21:29) If I had the technology to beam you in front of every reader as they finish the last page of Family Worship, what challenge or parting word of encouragement would you want to share with each of them? (21:30 - 24:47) Don, if the listeners want to connect with you and find out more about Family Worship, where should they go on the web? (24:48 - 25:36) About the Book: Gathering together for worship is an indispensable part of your family's spiritual life. It is a means for God to reveal himself to you and your loved ones in a powerful way. This practical guide by Donald S. Whitney will prove invaluable to families—with or without children in the home—as they practice God-glorifying, Christ-exalting worship through Bible reading, prayer, and singing. Includes a discussion guide in the back for small groups. About the Author: Donald S. Busyness, squirmy children, silly questions, and feeling insecure about talking to toddlers about Jesus are all things that hinder intentional discipleship in the season of young children. When you feel like you can't live up to that other family, or your ideal picture of family devotion time, it's tempting to do nothing. But regardless the challenges, we're still responsible for sharing God's word with our children. In this episode, Emily and Laura discuss how they've altered their expectations for family worship, and share practical ideas for getting started. If the gospel is everything to us, and we are deeply grateful for God's word, we will show our children how to feast off of the bread of life. Well, we made it through Christmas, and the new year has begun. And we’re doing just fine! (For the most part.) Donald S. Whitney, author of Praying the Bible, says, “Even those most faithful to God occasionally need to pause and think about the direction of their lives. It’s so easy to bump along from one busy week to another without ever stopping to ponder where we’re going and where we should be going. The beginning of a new year is an ideal time to stop, look up, and get our bearings.” And perhaps when we do, we will find that we need to refocus our lives. That is what we want to consider this weekend as we study a challenge the apostle Paul gives to the Corinthian believers. One of the key questions we want to answer is, “Why should we try to refocus our lives?” Another might be, “What should our focus be anyway?” Or maybe, “What changes will it bring?” (You can find a whole bunch of questions that might help you refocus this coming year by reading the excellent blog post 10 Questions to Ask at the Start of a New Year.) We think we’re doing just fine, but we all know deep down that we have to deal with God. Perhaps you are in a place where you are wide open to his working in your life and gladly embracing everything he has for you. Or maybe not! You could be running from his plan and purposes. Or you could be anywhere in between from stagnant, to wrestling, to tentative. Well, open your heart to the Lord! I have news for you: He isn’t going anywhere! So for our good, let’s look at what it might take to move toward God this year. That is where we are headed in this weekend’s message. Donald S. Whitney leads us through a study on praying the Bible
Welcome to the Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my special guest is Don Whitney and we're talking about his book Praying the Bible (Crossway, 2015). About The Book: When you pray, does it ever feel like you're just saying the same old things about the same old things? Offering us the encouragement and the practical advice we're all looking for, Donald S. Whitney, best-selling author of Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, outlines an easy-to-grasp method that has the power to transform our prayer life: praying the words of Scripture. Simple, yet profound, Praying the Bible will prove invaluable as you seek to commune with your heavenly Father in prayer each and every day. About The Author: Donald S. Whitney is professor of biblical spirituality and associate dean at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He has written several books related to Christian spirituality, including Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life and Praying the Bible. Don blogs regularly at BiblicalSpirituality.org.
