Does every Christian really need to go to church? I mean, Jesus never commanded us to go and spend at least one-and-a-half hours of our Sunday mornings singing hymns and listening to a preacher? On Set Free this week, Ken Legg is explaining some Basics for New Christians. Yesterday we looked at the importance of feeding ourselves spiritual food by reading the Bible. That's the main way that we hear what God has to say to us. But the amazing thing is, the communication isn't just one way ?' we can talk to God too! So what's the best way to pray? Jesus gave us a great example, we call it The Lord's Prayer. Ken Legg explains this template that Jesus provided, on today's edition of Set Free!Your support sends the gospel to every corner of Australia through broadcast, online and print media: https://www.vision.org.au/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Bible is an incredible book, it's filled with teaching, stories, encouragement, instructions and more. But unless you read it, it's not of any use! Unless you take it off the shelf, blow the dust off and start reading, you'll never take advantage of the spiritual food that God offers. Today on Set Free, Ken Legg shows us the importance of feeding ourselves spiritual food. He recounts his vision of unclean animals and God's command not to call impure what He has made clean. Peter reveals how the Holy Spirit descended on the Gentiles, confirming that God has granted them the repentance that leads to life. Meanwhile, some scattered Jewish believers begin preaching to Greeks in Antioch, and many turn to the Lord. The church in Jerusalem sends Barnabas to Antioch to encourage the new saints, and he ultimately recruits Saul, working with the church there for a year. Disciples of Jesus are first called Christians in Antioch. These disciples hear of a famine in Judea and send funds for the relief of the brethren, which Barnabas and Saul deliver. Peter introduced something new to the saints in Jerusalem, and they were not initially receptive. However, they were willing to listen as he shared how God brought salvation to the Gentiles. Change is always challenging, especially when it means acceptance of others, but humble hearts will keep open ears and learn to embrace what honors the will of God. Fortunately, this paved the way for more Jews to share the gospel with Gentiles, allowing the church to thrive and expand. Perhaps changing attitudes toward others and a willingness to broaden outreach can benefit local churches today. Ironically, Gentile Christians in Antioch sent funds to assist needy Jewish saints. A thriving fellowship emerges when brethren step beyond their comfort zones. Compassionate God, thank You for granting us repentance that leads to life. We are unworthy of Your grace, yet we live in the peace and joy of reconciliation with You through Jesus Christ. Please open our hearts to the way You are working to reach others and prepare us to have open arms. Help us to be like Barnabas, a man full of the Holy Spirit and faith and therefore ready to work for Your cause. And like the Christians who sent funds to help their brothers, teach us how to be more generous and involved in supporting fellow believers. Thought Questions: - How do you remain open to God's will, even when it challenges your expectations and traditions, like when Peter accepted Gentiles? - If God sent you to go and encourage new saints for a year, would you be willing to do it? How can you do such work where you live now? - New Christians sent funds to help believers they did not even know. How should you emulate that in the way you support needy Christians?

Martin Shaw and Mark Vernon return for a second conversation following Martin's embrace of Orthodox Christianity. The first conversation, entitled The Mossy Face of Christ, can be found on my YouTube channel. They discuss what is happening with the apparent resurgence of interest in Christianity, not least in relation to Martin's new course, The Skin-Boat and the Star. How can we discern the times and best participate in it?They explore the legacy of Christianity that can be such a block for people today and how the withdrawal of faith in contemporary culture may be a precursor to a rediscovery. They ask about the different styles of Christianity that are emerging amongst the so-called New Christians and how to discern the spirits.Martin discusses the way in which his quest has not ceased but become more focused, transformed by unexpected depths. Mark asks about living in modern times and resisting the temptation to invoke a negative energy, but instead .They explore the teaching of Jesus and being in the world whilst not wholly of it, as well as subversive acts of beauty that bring light and levity to the gravity of the moment. For more on Martin Shaw see - http://drmartinshaw.com/For more on Mark Vernon see - https://www.markvernon.com/00:00 The unfolding of Martin's experience02:32 The Skin-Boat gathering06:44 Why Christianity puts people off10:50 Understanding participation15:07 Beauty and pinpricks of eternity20:57 Being in the world and not of if26:51 Political and spiritual power32:04 What are you going to stand for36:50 Finite life and infinite desire40:40 Deepening the quest not ending it41:39 The paths that lead to God44:41 The centrality of devotion49:01 Losing life to find it55:47 Theosis in the western tradition01:00:01 Mysticism and the Christianity of tomorrow01:05:25 Injecting joy into the machine01:10:10 The love that sees over horizons01:15:17 Why Jesus stunned people01:20:21 Dialogue and yearning for God

Jonathan Hickory and trauma knew each other well. Childhood trauma coupled with on-the-job trauma as a police officer crippled Jonathan and compelled him to turn to alcohol as an escape. “Police officers see the darkest moments in peoples' lives in this fallen world,” Jonathan said in his book, Break Every Chain, which was made into a movie of the same name. A Christian family's response to their own pain and suffering made Christianity look intriguing, but Jonathan was so plagued with alcohol addiction that he didn't have true eyes to see. “The more I drank, the further I withdrew from God. Angry outbursts became a daily activity for me. I was dying inside.”More pain and trauma followed Jonathan until his wife's desperate plea for him to join her at church. That day he heard that God has the final word on pain with a message from 1 Peter that compelled Jonathan to saving faith. "Jesus help me become the man my family needs me to be. Forgive me for what I've done. Help heal our wounds. Help me fix this mess I made please."As he slowly started saying yes to Jesus, his alcohol addiction abated and his marriage was restored. GU Episode 245: The One About New Christians (I: 3 of 3) by Dr. Chris Dortch
New Christians are often surprised and confused to discover there are several different Biblical translations. The Bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek. For centuries, it has needed to be translated in order for the global community to understand its message. Even experienced Christians have a difficult time sorting through the differences. So, which translation is best? In this episode, we talk through the different types of translations and strategies for discerning which is most helpful.

We all know about the fish swallowing Jonah, but there is more in the book including the answers to these questions: What about people who haven't heard the gospel if Jesus is the only way to God What do we do about bad people, or when people treat us badly? What does God expect from us as His followers? How should we respond to continuing trials? Answers to these questions and other elated applications are what we will cover in our lesson on Jonah. In addition, we'll look at the importance of follow-up after someone becomes a Christian. This is inspired by Jonah because world history at that time could have been very different if Jonah hadn't stomped off with a bad attitude and had stayed to teach the people of Nineveh after their great national repentance. But we'll never know because Jonah didn't stay and do what he should have done. That is the last we hear of Jonah, but not the last of Nineveh. They return to their evil, aggressive ways and less than 40 years later conquer Israel, and the nation is destroyed. New believers need follow-up—they need to learn about the God they have trusted for salvation. They need to know HisWord and His ways. The lesson then talks about the importance of follow-up and shares a chart of 5 Assurances of the Disciple of Jesus, a modification of a chart on follow-up that I learned from the Navigator ministry. With this additional lesson, I'm also introducing a series on Discipleship for Bible805, a series of blogs, videos, podcasts, and other materials in addition to going through the Bible in chronological order. Please sign up for the Bible805 newsletter for notifications of new materials on this topic both for your personal spiritual growth and to use in helping others grow in their spiritual lives. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yvon-prehn8/support

Is baptism really necessary? We know that the physical act of baptism does not save us, so why should we do it? The answer is: that Jesus commanded us to do so. Baptism in water is an act of obedience.Main Points:1. What is Water Baptism? Baptism is a ceremony where a person who has placed their faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins, is immersed in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is a public declaration of your faith and identity as a follower of Christ. It's an illustration of what Christ has done in your life.2. In the New Testament we see that people were baptized immediately after their salvation. New Christians did not wait until they felt ready to be baptized. It is not a matter of readiness, it is a matter of obedience. 3. Baptism is not a mark of spiritual maturity, but rather a statement of personal identification with Jesus Christ. You don't have to wait until you feel like you are a spiritually strong person. It's an obedience issue, not a maturity issue.Today's Scripture Verses:Matthew 28:19 - “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”John 14:15 - “If you love me, keep my commandments.”Romans 6:4 - “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”Colossians 2:12 - "For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him, you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.”Quick Links:Subscribe to The 5 Minute Discipleship NewsletterDonate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group5 Minute Discipleship on Instagram

In this second message of 2023, pastor Bogdan Kipko encourages us to fire up our prayer life in the new year. Oswald Chambers said this about prayer: Prayer is not a preparation for work, it IS work. Prayer is not a preparation for the battle, it IS the battle. Prayer is two-fold: definite asking and definite waiting to receive. The big idea in this message is that Paul prays that the Colossian believers will be filled with God's knowledge and put it into practice. Our prayers for the new year should focus on putting our knowledge of God and His ways into practice every day. When people become Christians, God implants into them a new sense of his presence and love, his guidance and strengthening. This sense needs nurturing and development. New Christians need to understand what's happening to them, and how they must cooperate with the divine life that's gently begun to work in them. Paul, in prison, can help this process in two ways: by writing, as he is doing, but supremely by prayer. He may not be with the Colossians in person. But the God who is with them is also with him, and in the mystery (and hard work) of prayer he can help their progress toward Christian maturity. In this message, we're learning how to hold onto what's true and build our faith. ABOUT THIS MESSAGEIt's easy to think of doubt as a sign of weak faith. But it's not. God isn't afraid of our doubts, so we don't have to be either. In our new series, Doubting God, we're creating a space for the questions we've been afraid to ask.
