Conversing
Missional Church Planting, with Brad Brisco

Conversing

Church planting is thriving at the very moment the church faces a crisis of credibility. What if the problem isn't too few churches—but too narrow a vision of what church is for? In this episode with Mark Labberton, Brad Brisco reflects on church planting shaped by Christology before strategy, mission before institution, and incarnation before programs. Together they discuss missionary imagination in the modern West, co-vocational ministry, alternative expressions of church, micro-church networks, church growth assumptions, vocation and work, justice and proximity, and what it means to return—daily—to the ways of Jesus. –––––––––––––––– Episode Highlights "We need to help church planters think less like pastors starting a Sunday service and more like missionaries engaging a unique context." "If by church we mean buildings, then no—we don't need more of those." "Mission isn't really ours. It's about what God's already doing." "We can say we're gospel-centered and still miss the ways of Jesus." "The only way the church gets this far off is by being void of the ways of Jesus." –––––––––––––––– About Brad Brisco Brad Brisco is a missiologist and church planting leader, trainer, and writer who has spent more than twenty-five years coaching and resourcing church planters across North America. After beginning his career in the restaurant industry, Brisco entered ministry through church planting and later joined Send Network, where his work has focused on alternative expressions of church, co-vocational leadership, and missionally engaged discipleship. He also serves on the national leadership team for Forge America Mission Training Network. Brad is the co-author of "Missional Essentials," a 12-week small group study guide, "The Missional Quest: Becoming a Church of the Long Run" and "Next Door As It Is In Heaven." He is widely known for challenging church growth assumptions and for advocating Christ-centered, incarnational approaches that integrate faith, work, and neighborhood life. Vance Pitman, the president of the Send Network, joins us to share a message on the eternal Kingdom of God and how the church can prepare the way. The Kingdom of God is God's sovereign activity in the world resulting in people being in right relationship with Himself. As we read about the early church, we see that church planting is a part of spreading the gospel. In the Book of Philippians, we read Paul's letter to the Philippian church. Paul's primary purpose for writing was to thank the Philippians for their ongoing support through prayers, finances, and encouragement. They were equipping him to advance the kingdom of God and plant churches through their support. The letter stands as both a personal thank-you and a call to live out the gospel with joy, humility, and unwavering faith. 3 Truths from Philippians about church planting and the Kingdom of God: Truth #1 – When God births a church, it's always about something bigger. Truth #2 – When God births a church, He invites us to join in His kingdom activity. 1) Every church should cultivate a heart for the kingdom by praying. 2) Every church should prioritize the kingdom by sending. 3) Every church should invest in the kingdom by giving. Truth #3 – When God births a church, it's for His glory. If you are a believer, you have a role to play in advancing the Kingdom of God! Learn how you can apply these truths from the Book of Philippians to your life today.

The SEND Network has helped Southern Baptists focus on major cities, training new church planters and ensuring they have the support they need to succeed.03:26 The Cooperative Program – Fueling MissionsThe Cooperative Program is the financial backbone of SBC missions. Rather than requiring churches to contribute a fixed percentage, churches voluntarily participate, pooling resources to fund seminaries, missionaries, and outreach efforts.07:12 The International Mission Board (IMB)The SBC is home to the world's largest missionary-sending agency, the International Mission Board. With over 3,700 missionaries actively serving and more than 1,200 in training, the IMB ensures that Southern Baptists continue their global outreach, reaching unreached people groups and supporting international church planting.10:35 The Role of Special OfferingsTwo major annual offerings—Lottie Moon (Christmas) and Annie Armstrong (Easter)—provide additional direct-to-field support for missionaries and church planters. Our guest, Reverend Jay Hardwick, senior pastor of Forest Hills Baptist Church and president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, joins us as we discuss the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). We learn about the SBC's origins, core beliefs, and unique church governance structure. Southern Baptist churches operate independently while cooperating for missions and theological education. baptism by immersion, the Lord's Supper, and the autonomy of local churches highlight how Southern Baptists remain committed to biblical teachings while maintaining flexibility in church operations. This is Part 1 of our episode on the Southern Baptist Convention. Tune in next week for Part 2.Here's What We Discussed!00:00 IntroTiffany and Pastor Jeff introduce the SBC, the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. The SBC was founded in 1845 in Augusta, Georgia, to collaborate in church planting, training pastors, and sending missionaries. Southern Baptists are united by core theological beliefs, including the inerrancy of Scripture and the exclusivity of Christ, while working together to spread the gospel.07:14 Beliefs on BaptismBaptism by immersion is a key belief in the Southern Baptist faith. It symbolizes a believer's identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. Reverend Jay explains that baptism follows a personal confession of faith and does not contribute to salvation but serves as a public declaration.10:35 The Lord's Supper Reverend Jay discusses how Southern Baptist churches observe the Lord's Supper as a symbolic act of remembrance. He explains that the frequency of communion varies by church and emphasizes its role in reflecting on Christ's sacrifice and anticipating His return.19:07 Church Autonomy The SBC operates with local church autonomy, meaning each congregation is self-governed while voluntarily cooperating with state and national SBC organizations for mission work and theological training. Jay clarifies that there is no central governing body dictating church practices.22:45 Elders, Deacons and Mission Efforts The leadership structure within SBC churches highlights the roles of elders and deacons. Some churches follow a traditional deacon-led model, while others incorporate elder-led leadership to guide the church in spiritual and administrative matters. The Southern Baptist Cooperative Program allows churches to pool resources to support missions, theological education, and outreach efforts locally and globally. Jay emphasizes the importance of cooperation in fulfilling the SBC's mission.29:39 Stay Tuned Next Week!In part 2 of our conversation, we discuss the North American Mission Board and how the SBC collaborates to plant churches, train leaders, and support evangelism efforts across North America through initiatives like the SEND Network.Join the ConversationWe love your feedback! David Blok helped found and is now the Executive Director of a ministry called Plant 616. His ministry journey has been driven by 3 burdens: a love for the city, a passion for church planting, and a fascination with movements. This has led him through 20 years of urban ministry experience, pastoring and church planting in an urban neighborhood in greater Grand Rapids. David received his Master of Divinity degree in 2010 from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary with an emphasis on Church planting. He is a certified dean of the Evangel School of Urban Church Planting, a Send Network church planter trainer, and a church planting coach. David has been married to his lovely wife, Amanda, for almost 16 years. Together they have embarked on a journey of neighborhood ministry, foster care and adoption. As a result, they are the proud parents of Anthony, Melvin, and Elliana.  Through his work with Plant 616, David is excited to connect with and encourage mission minded leaders in the 616 area code, equip the next wave of missional adventurers, and catalyze a movement of missionary disciples in every crack and crevice of the 616 area code. In this podcast, David talks about how Plant 616 was formed and how it increasingly is bringing together a wide variety of genuine Christ-followers in greater Grand Rapids to do all they can to “make Jesus famous on every block” in our area. David is so excited to see how God is calling so many diverse people to work together toward this goal, including younger Gen Z believers along with older saints. Truly, we are seeing revival and spiritual awakening springing up all for His glory and our joy!

Brad Brisco and I have a fascinating conversation about the future of church planting in North America. Brad shares his personal journey from the restaurant business to seminary and church planting, and how that led him to rethink the entire approach to planting new churches. He argues that we need to shift our mindset - from seeing the church as a vendor of religious goods and services, to understanding the church as a sent missionary people. This is a crucial distinction, because it changes everything about how we approach church planting. Brad unpacks the benefits of co-vocational ministry, the importance of building diverse teams, and the need to start with missionary behaviors and activities rather than just launching a Sunday morning service. If you're someone involved in church planting, or if you're simply curious about the future of the church in our rapidly changing culture, you're going to want to lean in and listen closely to this conversation. Brad offers a compelling new vision that just might reshape the way we think about fulfilling the Great Commission in our communities. Brad Brisco is currently the Director of Multiplication Strategies for the Send Network. He holds a doctorate in the area of missional ecclesiology, his doctoral thesis was on assisting existing congregations in transitioning in a missional direction. There is a loneliness epidemic. We've lost our ability to connect to one another. In this conversation with Bryan Loritts we discuss the importance of enduring friendships. God's primary way of shaping people is through relationships with others and the Bible places a high premium on relationships, seen in concepts like the Trinity and salvation. Jesus modeled community by choosing 12 disciples to be with. We talk about the idea that friendships are important for accountability, correction and preventing isolation that can enable moral failure and the importance of being open and vulnerable within close friendships. Join us as we learn how to connect and have friendships that endure. Bryan C. Loritts (DMin, Liberty University) is teaching pastor of the Summit Church in Durham, North Carolina. He has dedicated his life and ministry to seeing the multiethnic church become the new normal in our society. He is also vice president for regions for the Send Network, the church planting arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, where he is responsible for training church planters in multiethnic church planting. He has been a featured speaker at the Global Leadership Summit and Catalyst. His books include Insider Outsider, The Dad Difference, and The Offensive Church. His latest book is Enduring Friendship. Pitman reflects on his time as the Pastor of Hope Church in Las Vegas, discussing conflicts with church leadership that led to his departure and his subsequent pursuit of intimacy with Jesus Christ. He also discusses his current role as the head of the North American Mission Board's church planting efforts and emphasizes the importance of pursuing intimacy with Christ, prioritizing rest, and aligning oneself with God's mission. BEST QUOTES “The primary call on my life is not ministry, the primary call on my life is intimacy. Ministry is what He does out of the overflow of intimacy.” – Vance Pitman “Spiritual leadership is not what I do for God. Spiritual leadership is what God does through me out of the overflow of my intimate love relationship with Him.” – Vance Pitman “God has really taught me that I can be so consumed with what He's called me to do that I forget about what He's called me to be. We're not human doings, we're human beings.” – Vance Pitman “Every man that I know that had an affair in ministry first had an affair with a ministry that wooed him away from intimacy with Christ and opened him up to things he never thought he do.” – Vance Pitman “Jesus didn't bring us into a relationship with Himself just so we could do something for Him. He brought us to a relationship with Himself because He wants to be with us.” – Vance Pitman “The local New Testament Church is the tool that he gave us for the accomplishment of the mission. It's not the mission. The mission is the kingdom of God being expanded in cities and nations all over the world.” – Vance Pitman “Leadership is lonely, but it can't be done alone. Leadership implies there are other people involved in following your leadership and speaking to you as a leader.” – Vance Pitman “Leaders are learners and when you stop learning, you forfeit the right to lead.” – Vance Pitman “Somebody less experienced than us often we think about them as only people we can pour into, but often the people less experienced than us bring a perspective that we don't have because it's fresh.” – Vance Pitman “The relational environments that you set and create in your life set the environment from which decisions will be made.” – Vance Pitman “Joy is in the journey. If we only focus on achievements, destinations, goals, or milestones, we'll miss so much along the way.” – Vance Pitman “For every one major achievement, there will be a thousand leadership moments along the way that are shaping the culture of your organization and the people within your organization.” – Vance Pitman RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Vance Pitman

Churches all over the world are dying and God longs to see His churches revitalized, brought back to life, thriving as lights for the Kingdom. But along with the excitement of revitalization can come burnout from the intense emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental work of revitalization. Today, Andrea Valenti shares how she has walked through the highs of revitalization and the lows of burnout, learning to ask others for help and asking Jesus to revitalize her heart.    SHOW NOTES Revitalization requires patience, active listening, and meeting people where they are. Burnout can look like numbness, mental and physical fatigue, irritated responses, and a feeling of being overwhelmed. Try to prevent burnout through healthy boundaries and habits, but if it hits, seek counsel from other ministry wives and resources like the SEND Network. QUOTES “Part of the issue is that sometimes there’s so much stigma in discussing the reality of burnout and other mental health concerns. There’s almost this idea of, there’s going to be judgment. If I share that I’ve been burnt out before in ministry, people are going to think that I am somehow less spiritual or less than, or there’s some kind of glaring sin issue that caused that.” -Andrea Valenti “You’re not alone. The statistics say at least half of people serving in ministry or other helping professionals are experiencing burnout or have experienced burnout. I think normalizing the fact that it is happening is really important for people to realize that it’s not just you. You’re not the only person. This isn’t a deficit about you, this is about the season and maybe a mismatch of priorities and ways that you’re serving.” -Andrea Valenti Links from the Show SEND Network CONNECT Connect with Christine Facebook // Instagram // Books Visit How to Thrive as a Pastor’s Wife to access Christine's resources for ministry wives like you! In this episode of the Unseen Leadership Podcast, Chandler Vannoy and Dan Iten are joined by Vance Pitman, President of the Send Network, and former pastor of Hope Church in Las Vegas. This episode explores the theme of leadership in the context of church planting and ministry. Pitman shares his insights and experiences, emphasizing the importance of succession and focusing on the kingdom of God rather than personal success. He also discusses his journey as a church planter in Las Vegas and the unique challenges and opportunities he has faced in ministering to a non-Christian population. QUOTES FROM EPISODE 79 “Jesus focused more on succession than He did on success. And I think that's an issue in the church and American leadership in America. Today, we focus on success without even thinking about succession. Jesus was just the opposite. If you look at His public ministry, it was not even successful. 120 people after three and a half years wouldn't get him any book deal or invitation to speak at any conference, but that 120 became 120,000 because He focused on succession knowing it was bigger than just His life. I think that's something we got to get focused towards.” – Vance Pitman “The church is just a temporary tool established by Jesus for the expansion of the kingdom. The real end game is the kingdom of God around the throne of Jesus for every tribe, tongue, people, and nation.” – Vance Pitman “The primary call on my life is not to do something for Jesus, the primary call of my life is to be with Jesus. And everything Jesus wants to do through my life, He'll do out of the overflow of what He's doing in my life.” – Vance Pitman “The greatest thing you bring to your role as a leader is your personal intimate relationship with Jesus because everything that He wants to do through you as a leader, He'll do in you. The key to learning about being a leader is before I can be a leader, I must be a devoted follower. The key to my success as a leader is the devotion that I pursue Christ with as a devoted follower. And as a follower of Jesus, He then begins to lead through us in ways that we would never dream possible.” – Vance Pitman “As much as you schedule appointments, as much as you schedule time with the family as much as you schedule time to sleep at night, you have to build rest and whitespace or margin into your calendar.” – Vance Pitman “We will never, never grow healthy churches with unhealthy leaders.” – Lance Witt “We have neglected the fact that a pastor's greatest leadership tool is a healthy soul.” – Lance Witt “I think one of the reasons that the church in North America is struggling today is because we have spiritually unhealthy leadership. When you look at the kingdom of God, globally, there are only two continents in the world where Christianity is declining. One of them is North America, and North America has the most resources, the most buildings, the most budget, the most staff the most degrees, and the most education the most. Why are we not seeing the kingdom expand? I think it's directly related to the spiritual health of those who are leading.” – Vance Pitman “Starting a church service is not planting a church. Biblical missiology is that planting a church starts with the city. You engage that city with the gospel, you make disciples, and churches are born as a byproduct.” – Vance Pitman “Leadership is lonely, but it cannot be done alone. Leadership demands that we bring other people to the table to lead alongside us.” – Vance Pitman “You cannot lead what you do not live long term. You can fake it in the short run. Authenticity in leadership is important and if you're not living it, you won't be able to lead it over the long haul. – Vance Pitman RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Replenish: Leading from a Healthy Soul by Lance Witt Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers by Dane Ortlund The Stressless Life: Experiencing the Unshakable Presence...

Guest: Rob Wilton Rob Wilton is a multi-city movement leader for Christ. He is the Founding Pastor of Vintage Church, Send City Missionary for the Send Network, and the Chaplain for the New Orleans Saints. Although his family is from South Africa, Rob was born and raised in New Orleans and this is where he met Jesus. Guys, just thinking about some common “missteps” or mistakes that we can make along the journey of life…followed by common logic AND uncommon wisdom. Thinking you can travel the road alone Common logic - surround yourself with good people Uncommon wisdom - trust God with the direction of your lifeEven Jesus had “his guys” - Christian community is tremendously important, but don't think that others “complete” you! The Bible is full of stories of really unimpressive men who followed a really impressive God. Guys, you don't have to be everything or do everything, you need to humbly walk in obedience to God and follow His plan for your life! Underestimating the influence that others have in your life Common logic - you're the average of your 5 closest friends Uncommon wisdom - God outweighs all the influence and wisdom of those around you if you'll trust Him! Thinking less of yourself for your humble beginnings Common logic - doesn't matter where you begin, it matters where you end… Uncommon wisdom - many times God uses where you began to give you insight into the journey where He's taking you - don't undervalue your start! One common theme throughout Scripture - God doing for us what we could not do for ourselves! You can't, but Jesus did. Because Jesus did, now you can! God doesn't need your ability, He wants your availability! Thinking too highly of yourself for particular gifts and talents you've been given Common logic - think less of yourself Uncommon wisdom - to whom much is given, much is required and expected - Luke 12:48Acts 9:31 - and walking in the fear of the Lord and comfort of the Holy Spirit, the church multiplied. Some may need to hear about the fear of the Lord and gain a little humility; others might need to hear how God is the lifter of our heads and walk in the comfort of the Holy Spirit - both are important! Thinking you'll address spiritual issues later in life Common logic - take care of yourself first Uncommon wisdom - if it's important, address it now…if it's not important, don't waste time with it!Every day is a gift, every opportunity has the potential to be something important for our growth and maturity…and God's glory! Rob's advice - “press in earlier” - don't wait to develop your spiritual life, time is valuable, don't waste it! T4M guys - just a reminder that Training4Manhood is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) ministry and you can make donations either via Zelle (info@training4manhood.com) or by visiting the Training4Manhood website. Engaging in ministry is signing up for more "stressors" in our lives, but how we respond to those stressors is up to us! Listen in as Pastor Vance Pitman (founding pastor of Hope Church Las Vegas and current President of the SEND Network) shares why and how we must eliminate stress from our lives.A few highlights from the interview:Stress is incompatible with God's character. The root of all stress is fear. The opposite of fear is faith.Feeling "stressed" is usually rooted in an identity issue or an intimacy issue.Stress reveals a dependence on my own (limited) resources, instead of depending on God's (unlimited) resources. How to manage our daily schedules and avoid the "tyranny of the urgent."How stress and anger are related, and how to rid our lives of sinful anger.Rest was God's idea, and is an issue of spiritual obedience. Also check out Vance's newest book The Stressless Life.Connect With Us:The Coworkers Podcast websiteEmail: coworkersstudy@gmail.com
