In this episode, Carlo welcomes back cinematographer Matheus for a deep dive into the making of their independent feature film Gazer. They reflect on the film's unexpected success in the festival circuit and its upcoming theatrical release—an increasingly rare feat for original, non-IP-based indie films. Matheus shares insights on the film's unusual production journey, which spanned two and a half years, often shot nights and weekends without permits or a full crew, and emphasized empathy, collaboration, and efficiency on set. They discuss how Gazer was crafted largely on 16mm film with a minimal setup and a lean, passionate crew, embracing imperfections and learning to let go of perfectionism. Matheus emphasizes the value of over-communicating with actors, having a service-oriented mindset, and staying true to the director's vision rather than chasing aesthetic perfection. He also details how the surreal “nightmare” sequences in Gazer evolved visually and narratively, blending practical effects with bold stylistic choices like film pushing, color grading, and minimal lighting. The episode is a celebration of scrappy filmmaking, artistic growth, and the deep relationships formed through making something personal and challenging outside the studio system.Follow Us!Matt Bastos: Instagram | WebsiteBUY TICKETS FOR GAZER: TICKETSCheck out Gazer: IMDB Carlo: Instagram | WebsiteThe Creative Gap: Instagram | YoutubeSUPPORT THE PODCAST ON PATREON____________________________________________________⚙️ GEAR USED TO MAKE THIS PODCAST:Rodecaster Pro II: https://amzn.to/3RluSeVRode Podmic: https://amzn.to/3RpaR77Mic Stand: https://amzn.to/4caJUfiCamera 1: https://amzn.to/45h5E7bCamera 2: https://amzn.to/45g8iKxLight: https://amzn.to/3KK6XSt
When Gene Hackman died last month at 95, Adam and Josh knew they owed the actor a Top 5. After knocking out a few blind spots and revisiting some favorites, they use their Top 5 Gene Hackman Scenes to try to get at what made the actor so special. Also, Josh reviews Nicole Kidman in HOLLAND, Michael Shannon's directing debut ERIC LARUE, and nominates the inventive (if "Memento"-inspired) new thriller GAZER for the Golden Brick. Plus, the Filmspotting Madness: Best of the 21st Century (So Far) Sweet 16. This week Evan and Megan watched (and Dave partly watched) the micro budget thriller GAZER (2:22), directed by Ryan J. Sloan, and written by Sloan and star Ariella Mastroianni. Frankie (Mastroianni) has dyschronometria, a neurological condition where an individual struggles to perceive and track the duration of time. So when Frankie accepts a high-risk job for a decent chunk of money, it's safe to say things don't work out like she expects. Then everyone watched FREAKY TALES (21:20), one movie made up of four sci-fi/action/martial arts anthology bloodfests that features lots of characters killing neo Nazis. Oh, and it takes place in 1987, which makes everyone (especially Evan) very happy. And we're all extremely happy that it has a whole lot of Pedro Pascal. Over on Patreon, we watched PRINCESS MONONOKE in honor of its 4K restoration.

"Gazer" had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its homage to film-noir, guerrilla-style independent filmmaking, and lead performance from Ariella Mastroianni. Director/Writer/Producer/Editor Ryan J. Sloan (making his feature directorial debut with this film) and Mastroianni, who also co-wrote and produced alongside Sloan were both kind enough to spend some time speaking with me about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which will open in theaters from Metrograph Pictures on Friday, April 4th. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Ariella Mastroianni is an actor from New Jersey by way of Ontario, Canada. With director Ryan J. Sloan, she co-wrote and co-produced "Gazer," which she also stars in. The film, which the duo shot on weekends over the course of two years, brings the paranoid thriller genre into wildly original new territory. On this episode, Mastroianni tells the story of deciding to shoot on film, using their own money, with no formal support, no connections, just a deep desire to make the film they were both dying to see. She talks about the tools her acting teachers (like Brad Fleischer and Kyle Donnelly) provided that still serve her, how “mapping” her character's physical journey grounded her on the set, the trick she used to stop worrying and love her marks, the “desperate love” it took to see this film through, and much more. "Gazer" open in New York on April 4th and LA on April 11th. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram
