For some, in the digital age, life feels faraway and disconnected. As if each and every part of life comes from a separate factory, Amazon'ed right to our front doors. Today's guest, Grace Gurganus, wanted to connect the dots and have a more immediate connection with her lived experience. She set out to make an impact in her local food system in southern Oregon, and experienced a radical change in lifestyle and career. Did you know that there is a blood test that can tell you whether you are at higher risk to develop cancer during your lifetime? Today, we have Cassie Gurganus, a Certified Genetic Counselor at the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute, and she explains the inherited cancer risks that are passed from parent to child and the testing options that are available. Plus, she shares the latest breakthroughs and the importance of using our DNA to help diagnose, treat and further understand cancer. Key Takeaways Genetic counseling helps patients or their relatives who are at a high risk for disease to learn about their condition and possible treatments. Genetic testing can be a powerful preventative cancer tool. While all cancer involves genetic mutations, not all of those mutations are inherited. Not all genetic testing is the same. Consumer genetic testing kits like 23andMe are popular but have many limitations compared to the tests available with a Certified Genetic Counselor at USA Health. ////// Never Miss an EpisodePlease subscribe to The Cancering Show Want us to deliver The Cancering Show to your email inbox? Mary is the owner of Triangle Divorce Lawyers and focuses her practice on litigation. Mary graduated with honors from North Carolina Central School of Law. During law school, she was the president of the law school's Innocence Project, which investigates claims of innocence by inmates whose innocence may be proven using new technologies, such as DNA. Mary was also a member of the North Carolina Central Law Journal and Parliamentarian and National Delegate for the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. Mary completed her undergraduate degree at Loyola University in Baltimore, MD (Go Greyhounds!), where she majored in Business Management and Law.Mary shares stories, counsel, and a few laughs with the Sleuths as they talk about cases they've worked and give practical advice to our listeners about all things family law and divorce. Why family law? "My parents divorced. I went through it as a child and I know how it feels. I know how it feels when one person in your family doesn't have enough money to live. I know what it feels like when your dad doesn't get to see you enough. So that's my why." - MaryFor somebody to either go through a divorce situation or custody situation, what is the average amount of time?Even if they don't hire a lawyer, what I tell them is it's not even just going through the legal process. When you got married, you rented a limo you reserved your space for your marriage. You know, people are taking a year and a half to get married. You're scheduling your caterer and all that stuff. It's gonna take about that same amount to try to figure out how to be this new person that's an individual. Now you were this couple and this family, what's the new normal now that you're divided. So I tell people it's going to take about that same amount to recreate and be the new you as the amount of time it took to plan your life together. The Sleuths unpack the "lights out rule" when it comes to proving an affair. Mary speaks about proving an affair from the aspect of a divorce lawyer. They share a hilarious story that took place at a stadium that Triangle Divorce Lawyers employed the services of Blackman Detective Services to follow a man suspected of cheating on behalf of his spouse. The Sleuths try to find the truth for a case that was brought up by askthesleuth@gmail.com of a messy custody case and ask for Mary's legal expertise on the issues of the case. You can find out more about Triangle Divorce Lawyers on their website or call 919 752-8832 for a case review.

What do recent and upcoming elections in Latin America reveal about the region's changing political and economic landscape? Are the rise of populism and concerns about corruption having destabilizing effects that outside actors can exploit? Carnegie visiting scholar Julia Gurganus, filling in for Jen Psaki, sat down in the DiploPod studio with Mark Feierstein, special assistant to the president and senior director for Western Hemisphere affairs on the National Security Council. They discussed the upcoming presidential election in Mexico, outside influence in the region, countries' responses to that external influence, and the impact on U.S. policy in the region. Mark Feierstein is a Senior Advisor with ASG's Latin America practice, where he advises clients on entry and growth strategies throughout the region. Most recently, Mr. Feierstein served at the White House as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs on the National Security Council. Though Germany was convulsed by violent unrest in the weeks following the end of the First World War, one of the few places where a new republican government was established peacefully was Munich. Central to this was Kurt Eisner, for whom this was among his proudest achievements. As Albert Earle Gurganus explains in Kurt Eisner: A Modern Life (Camden House, 2018), the success of this transition and the framework for the government he led in the months following the deposition of the Bavarian monarchy reflected his firm commitment to the long-held principles that defined his politics. The son of a merchant who provided military uniforms for the Prussian court, as a student Eisner abandoned his studies for a life as a journalist. His writings soon earned him both admiration and a term of imprisonment for lèse majesté. Yet Eisner’s time in prison did nothing to dampen his career prospects, and upon his release he soon rose to become the chief editor of the Social Democratic Party’s leading newspaper. Though ideological struggles led to his dismissal from his position as editor in 1905, he remained a leading critic and commentator until his opposition to Germany’s involvement in the First World War constrained his opportunities. As Gurganus explains, his idealism was both key to his sudden ascent to his power in November 1918 and his downfall three months later, when he was assassinated while on his way to deliver his government’s resignation. In the latest episode of DiploPod, Jen Psaki sits down with Julia Gurganus to discuss the re-election of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Gurganus is a visiting scholar with the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Program. She has spent the past two decades working in the U.S. intelligence community on issues related to Russia and Eurasia. From 2014 to 2017, she was a national intelligence officer for Russia and Eurasia, the senior subject matter expert on Eurasia for the director of national intelligence. Mark Gurganus grew up in Wilmington, attended the University of North Carolina on an NJROTC scholarship, and then began a career in the US Marine Corps. Gurganus rose to the rank of Major General, commanding thousands of men and women on the front lines of America’s War on Terrorism, until a deadly attack on a base in Afghanistan in 2012. Gurganus talks candidly about the attack and the investigation that found him responsible, forcing his retirement and ending his 37-year decorated career.
In 1989, when Allan Gurganus published his debut novel, Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, he did something amazing: Through a work of fiction, he managed to bring to life what was, to date, the most divisive period in American history, the Civil War years—a time in which as many as 620,000 of our fellow citizens (2% of the population) died. Perhaps even more astounding, Gurganus made it clear that although the war ended in 1865, the fallout it produced has lingered in the national atmosphere ever since, burning through consecutive generations of “Yankees” and “Rebels” much the way General Sherman’s Army blazed its way across Georgia toward the sea. Nearly 25 years after the book’s initial publication and 150 years since the launch of the four-year conflict that killed more Americans than all other U.S. wars combined (from the Revolution to Vietnam), it’s time to take a fresh look at Allan Gurganus’s brilliant first novel and remind ourselves of something we may have forgotten: When two parts of the same whole turn on each other, no one truly wins.
We're thrilled to bring you this story from producer Peter Solomon. It's a gem. We fell for this piece the first time we heard it. The rebel yell. What did it sound like – that battle cry that terrorized union troops and rallied Confederates to battle? Historians have clues from letters and diaries but still have never agreed. Producer Peter Solomon brings us a recording of what many believe is an authentic Rebel Yell ... and it's nothing we expected to hear. Peter spoke with Waite Rawls, President of the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia, who offers his perspective. We are also excited to bring you the comments of Allan Gurganus, author of Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All. He was a featured speaker last Fall at an "The Audio Listening Institute" from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke and the Third Coast International Audio Festival. Thanks to Mr. Gurganus being brilliant and to the Center for Documentary Studies for allowing us to rebroadcast their audio. Peter produced this story as an assignment for the Feature Bureau at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, and it aired on public radio stations across the state of Virginia. Peter's editor, Big Shed friend Lydia Wilson, had read an article about a rebel yell CD from the Musuem of the Confederacy. Peter explained, "I didn't really know anything about the subject before I got the assignment. I knew that there was an amusement park ride called the 'Rebel Yell' or it was something that you shouted at a football game. When I heard the actual sound of the Confederate soldiers demonstrating the yell I was shocked. I played it for a colleague who thought it sounded like a person being killed. I asked Waite Rawls to comment on this reaction. He ended up being a very good storyteller. He's articulate, knowledgeable about the history of the civil war and I was able to let him tell the story without writing any narration." And thanks to Peter Solomon for sharing this with us. Peter has worked as a jazz host and operations manager at WCVE-FM, Richmond since 1999. His background is in music. Peter - "I am a big jazz nerd but in recent years my interests have turned to crafting radio features and that's the part of my job that I most enjoy."
