In Grand Junction, Colorado, real estate developer Alan Helmick is found shot in his home and his car later set on fire. Investigators focus on his wife, Miriam Helmick, after a hand-delivered threatening greeting card is traced to her by surveillance footage. Additional evidence, including incriminating online searches, forged checks, and a ballistic match to a decades-old bullet, points to motive and opportunity. Prosecutors say Miriam stood to gain financially, and forensic work helped secure her conviction for first-degree murder and a lengthy prison sentence. The case shows how small pieces of physical and digital evidence can connect to form a compelling case.

Alan Clarke Helmick was born August 27th, 1945 in Delta, Colorado. He attended school in Delta graduating from Delta High School in 1963. While in High School Alan met a woman by the name of Sharon Leonard and the two became high school sweethearts. After High School he went on to graduate from Adams State College with a degree in physics. Alan and Sharon ended up getting married and the two over many years had four children together. Alan even created his own company, Helmick Mortgage Corporation and become very successful. Unfortunately, Sharon passed away New Year's Eve 2003 leaving Alan alone and severely depressed. He picks up dancing as a hobby where he meets Miriam Giles however, that relationship would end in his murder.

Lexington, South Carolina. May 31, 1985. 17-year-old Shari Smith was excited for the future. In just a few days, she would set off on a cruise with her friends to celebrate the end of their high school years. After that, she had her entire life ahead of her. Everything came to a tragic end, however, when Shari was snatched from outside her home in broad daylight by a sadistic predator, Larry Gene Bell. For 28 days, the Midlands region of South Carolina was terrorized by Bell, who callously taunted Shari's family on the phone. Then, as the FBI expected he would if he wasn't apprehended, he snatched another girl. His second victim was 9-year-old Debra May Helmick.
