In this off-season episode, I'm joined by Bobbie Holmes of Killer Stories, who tells me (and you) the story of American double murderer Larry Gene Bell. Larry Gene Bell kidnapped 17-year-old Shari Smith on May 31, 1985, and murdered her shortly after. He then taunted Shari's family by making several phone calls and forcing Shari to write them a letter before she was killed. A couple of weeks later, Larry kidnapped 9-year-old Debra Helmick and murdered her in a similar fashion. Once more, he taunted Shari's family after doing so. After his arrest on June 27, 1985, Larry Gene Bell was given the death penalty. He chose the electric chair over lethal injection and was finally executed on October 4, 1996. Leaders usually like to be in control. Every action you take is toward a goal. Every step along the way is often thoughtfully planned. When you cannot see the way forward, you tend to step back and reassess where you veered off the path. But you may tend to focus too quickly on “the how.” What would happen if you ask “why” instead? What if the core reason behind your goals, is just as important as the goals themselves? In the latest episode of The Enlightened Executive podcast, angel investor, Brian Andrés Helmick, shares how learning to surrender his expectations and releasing control, led him down an amazing and rewarding road in life. By letting go and assuming that he didn't always know what was best, Brian started on a path that he had not foreseen: from investing to entrepreneurship, to a spiritual journey, to impact investing. Listen in and explore how stepping back, loosening the reins, and embracing the concept of letting go, can actually elevate your leadership, and change your life for the better.

Vanessa Helmick started her Maine interior design business, Fiore Interiors, using a unique approach: she ignored all of her well-intentioned advisors, and made decisions that were best for her. She avoided networking, she moved out of the city of Portland, and she chose clients that she liked and who liked her aesthetic. Vanessa's aesthetic, one that she describes as “Scandi Beach,” is a combination of Scandanavian minimalism and a heavily textured coastal experience. With each of her projects, she incorporates art into her design and engages with her clients to choose signature pieces that will enhance their daily lives. Vanessa's own daily life has taken her to Yarmouth where she is raising her daughter, and their new pup, minutes away from her new storefront, located near the bustling boatyards of the Royal River. You'll enjoy getting to know more about Vanessa's personal and professional style on today's episode of Radio Maine with Dr. Lisa Belisle. Thank you for joining our Radio Maine community.

--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/platzi-podcast/message
