Big Government is casting a wider net, seeking to police people's thoughts as expressed on social media and use those posts to have people fired or to deny visas to potential visitors and workers — again, based on their thoughts and opinions. For starters, they unilaterally exed out three hallowed words that have historically expressed our people's proud democratic purpose – diversity, equity, and inclusion.This month, investigative journalist Judd Legum uncovered dozens of words that partisan Trump functionaries are perverting and purging in a bizarre authoritarian frenzy. Legum even found that NSA, a non-partisan security agency, has now banned its staff from using 27 common words, including “bias” and “injustice.” It's as though Trump's word police think censoring language will hide the ugly realities the words express.In fact, the control of language is central to the entrenchment of totalitarian regimes, as George Orwell laid out in his bleak novel, 1984. He wrote about “Newspeak,” “doublethink,” and other linguistic twists as mass propaganda tools that eliminated inconvenient ideas and provided new “truth” for the party faithful to spread. Keir Starmer's Thought Police have been raiding the homes of journalists and activists in the past few days, most recently arresting longtime organizer, journalist, and social media influencer Sarah Wilkinson, who I have known, admired, and collaborated with for many years. Sarah and others are being charged with violating Section 12 of the Terrorism Act of 2000. This is a very easy law to break, and until now, is one that has generally gone unenforced. If you are perceived to have said or posted something in praise of a group that is resisting an illegal occupation or a genocidal slaughter, and if the group you have said something positive about is on the UK's proscribed list, such as Hamas or Hezbollah, then you have broken this terrorism law and you are subject to a potential prison sentence of 14 years. In addition to an early-morning raid on her home with 12 uniformed and plainclothes officers and having this potential sentence hanging over her head, they have taken all of Sarah's electronics, and forbidden her from posting anything online. What they are obviously doing here is applying this law in an extremely selective and very political way, and it's a law that shouldn't be on the books in the first place, in any remotely democratic society. They have chosen people like Sarah to target, because, unlike the millions of other people they could be targeting for posting exactly the same sorts of things that she has posted, she has a direct following of hundreds of thousands of people on X, and many more people within her activist networks who benefit greatly from her involvement with campaigns such as the Gaza Flotilla. If the MI5 thinks I have enough of a following for them to arrest me next time I land at Heathrow, someone will probably let you know.

He becomes increasingly skeptical of the Party and begins to challenge its authority after starting a forbidden love affair with Julia, a fellow party member.As Winston's dissent grows, he and Julia secretly read a revolutionary book that criticizes the Party, further fueling their desire for rebellion. However, their rebellion is short-lived. They are caught by the Thought Police and subjected to brutal interrogation and re-education. Winston is tortured until his resistance crumbles, and he betrays Julia under the pressure of his worst fears.The novel ends with Winston, now a broken man, passively accepting the Party's doctrine and loving Big Brother. To me, it is an incredibly sad and offensive week. We had five servicemen killed in an operation supporting Israel. The Figurehead's team is not going to give these gold star families the respect of calling this what it was.
