Today's guest is the incredible Linda Cruse. She is a woman who has made a clear and conscious decision to make her ‘earth walk' count in every moment of every day. Linda is a frontline humanitarian, leadership expert and author of ‘Leading on the Frontline – Remarkable stories and essential leadership lessons from the world's danger zones. She is also the founder of an incredible initiative called Race For Good A Global Youth League that mobilises students to engage in high-impact learning and develop practical problem-solving skills as they tackle real-life critical issues.Linda has worked alongside some of the world's most influential figures including HH The Dalai Lama, Sir Richard Branson and HRH The Prince of Wales, and with companies, foundations and universities including GSK, Virgin Unite, Cadbury, Rabobank, KPMG, Merrill Lynch, the World Bank.Linda's journey into creating a purposeful life by design, began in 1996 when she was a stressed-out mum working in a job she hated. She was driving along a motorway in the middle of the night when she suffered temporary blindness. This terrifying episode led to a blinding insight: what is the point of living if life has no point? Determined to make a difference, Linda started a new life. This was the start of a scary, lonely, but always emotionally fulfilling job: teaching skills and bringing aid – and, above all, love – to war-torn refugees, the poverty-stricken and the victims of disaster. The essence of Linda's message is what she calls “A Hand Up not A Hand Out”. She would far rather empower people and communities to create sustainable change by leveraging partnerships with groups of highly successful individuals – typically senior executives in global corporations, successful entrepreneurs – taking them to some of the remotest parts of the world where communities struggle to either overcome natural, or man-made, disasters or to make the most of their existing resources. The idea is that so much more can be achieved with innovative minds solving problems, as opposed to only handing over the dollars. When I talk about being on the front line of purposeful living, Linda has faced death on more than one occasion but she has never given up on her mission. Her ultimate aim is to inspire others to do what they can. And on that note, I have no doubt that this episode will inspire you to not only reach for your pocket in supporting causes you are passionate about but to use your head and your heart to be an active participant in the change that you seek. Welcome to the DNA Of Purpose Podcast.

Krish Raval is the Founder and Director of Faith in Leadership (FiL), Britain's main leadership development organisation working with inter-faith communities. As a practicing Hindu he works with senior leaders and clerics from Muslim, Christian and Jewish faith communities. In this conversation Krish shares his work and experiences of leading this inter-faith community. Simon and Krish share their thoughts on how Eco-Leadership expresses the inter-dependencies and rich learning potential not only between faith communities but also between faith and secular organisations. Krish explains that the most powerful learning and development he observes, comes from leaders being with others, and learning how to work with and learn from differences, rather than being taught leadership skills. This aligns with Simon's theory of Leadership formation, which was inspired by his stay in a monastic hermitage. Simon noticed that monks were not taught 'monk skills' but were formed by the monastic life; the prayer, liturgy, rituals, work, spiritual direction, community life, self reflection and service to others. Krish's FiL work recognises this and he creates spaces for leadership formation to happen. He is currently developing the idea of ‘radical hospitality', sharing his personal experience that inviting others into your home or place of worship to eat together, can be a transformative act. In this wide-ranging conversation Krish recalls his conversation with Nelson Mandela and he shares why he believes faith leadership in our communities is so important, to all society. Bio Krish Raval is the Founder and Director of Faith in Leadership (FiL), Britain's main leadership development organisation to work with senior and emerging clerical and lay leaders from the main faith communities. Based at St Benet's Hall, University of Oxford, Krish supports and mentors FiL's extraordinary alumni network. Whether addressing refugee and human trafficking matters, running foodbanks, contending with right-wing agitators outside Mosques or Synagogues, addressing the fallout from the murders of servicemen or dealing with Covid-19, FiL alumni are the nexus of intelligent faith in the public square in Britain today. Krish read law at Cambridge and Sheffield Universities, started a leadership development programme for young people when he was in his twenties, and has interviewed icons of leadership including Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Nelson Mandela and HH The Dalai Lama. He's the only person to have been award an OBE for services to leadership education and inter-faith cohesion

Generating the Mind for Enlightenment For those who admire the spiritual ideals of the Eight verses on Transforming the Mind it is helpful to recite the following verses for generating the mind for enlightenment. Practicing Buddhists should recite the verses and reflect upon the meaning of the words, while trying to enhance their altruism and compassion. Those of you who are practitioners of other religious traditions can draw from your own spiritual teachings, and try to commit yourselves to cultivating altruistic thoughts in pursuit of the altruistic ideal. With a wish to free all beings I shall always go for refuge to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha until I reach full enlightenment. Enthused by wisdom and compassion, today in the Buddha's presence I generate the Mind for Full Awakening for the benefit of all sentient beings. As long as space endures, as long as sentient being remain, until then, may I too remain and dispel the miseries of the world. In conclusion, those who like myself, consider themselves to be followers of Buddha, should practice as much as we can. To followers of other religious traditions, I would like to say, “Please practice your own religion seriously and sincerely.” And to non-believers, I request you to try to be warm-hearted. I ask this of you because these mental attitudes actually bring us happiness. As I have mentioned before, taking care of others actually benefits you. read more https://www.dalailama.com/teachings/training-the-mind

Hi – this is Julie Masters and you’re listening to The Next Right Thing – a mini-series from The Inside Influence Team. Designed to provide some actionable certainty in uncertain times. Specifically – and the situation we’re all facing right now – the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lock down. The idea behind this series is to go out to some of the most popular guests from past episodes of Inside Influence – and ask them one question: ‘What are the most important things you’re focusing on right now (tools, ideas, strategies) - or advising your clients to focus on - that you know for sure work in uncertain times?’The intention being that somewhere in there, from these incredible minds, you might be able to find inspiration for your next right thing – a point of certainty amidst the uncertainty. In this episode I speak with… Linda Cruse – frontline humanitarian, leadership expert and author of ‘Leading on the Frontline – Remarkable stories and essential leadership lessons from the worlds danger zones.’Linda has worked alongside some of the world’s most influential figures including HH The Dalai Lama, Sir Richard Branson and HRH The Prince of Wales, and with companies, foundations and universities including GSK, Virgin Unite, Cadbury, Rabobank, KPMG, Merrill Lynch, the World Bank. Her main message being this – when crisis comes – and we find ourselves on the frontline in whatever form - we need to stop focusing on being charitable – and start focusing on being capable. In this conversation we talk about… Leading from the frontline – what she has learned works when all traditional structure and hierarchy falls away. The concept of charitable vs capable – and why there are 7.7 billion hero’s on this planet right now. And how recovery actually works – not the sanitised ‘plan on a spreadsheet’ kind – but the messy ‘making it up the next right thing at a time, when the ground is constantly shifting beneath us’ kind. What I want you to reflect on here… is that in crisis and uncertainty – those that emerge as the leaders – both as individuals and brands – are often not who you would expect. As frequently as it’s the top dog – it’s someone you may never have noticed before. Someone who decides, for whatever reason, that now is the time to stand up and contribute the best that they have to give – with certainty. Essentially, those that make the decision to focus more on ‘capability’ than ‘catastrophe’.If you want to dig even further into Linda’s knowledge and background… you can hunt down our previous conversation - which I believe is episode No. 22. You’ll also hear her talk about ‘Race For Good’ which is an online platform (I think maybe app) that she’s developing to allow capable people around the globe to collaborate on solving some of the world’s greatest issues. At the time of publishing it’s not yet finished – but keep an eye out in the coming weeks. Not perfect – showing up…So… other than staying well and looking after each other - I hope somewhere in here you find the fuel you need for your next right thing. History is not going to repeat itself the way it did for my mentors and colleagues. Investment into the trading business is going to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. If you are doing things by hand, you are putting yourself in a very disadvantaged position. You can't work orders on the floor anymore. There is no floor. How's that for a development?! Another example is the risk per trade in contemporary trading. Back in the 70s and 80s, it wasn't uncommon to risk as much as 2% per trade! That would be madness in today's environment, especially if you want to get an allocation from a global macro fund or if you want to work for a real prop trading firm. [A real prop trading firm will give you funds to run without your needing to add your own capital and you'll be able to take the risk home with you overnight and over the weekend, for example.] Take the humanity out of your trading. If you are looking at charts for subjective interpretation, more and more you'll be competing against trading machines that are "trained" to beat you. If you think trading is unfair already, in my opinion it's going to get worse. Whereas I think you should strengthen your sense of self through yoga and meditation, at the same time I think you should begin to extract yourself out of the trading equation by coming to understand that you are the weakest link in your trading. To put it in context, I think even if you had the self-knowledge and awareness of HH The Dalai Lama, you should still develop a set of computerized trading rules and manage risk systematically. Two good books on yoga are Light On Yoga: The Bible of Modern Yoga by BKS Iyengar and Yoga: The Spirit and Practice of Moving Into Stillness by Erich Schiffmann. Disclosure: Erich is a long time friend and my yoga teacher of 20 years.
, please? All feedback greatly appreciated. Thank you. Following on from Claudia Cragg's previous interview with Douglas Abrams on (with HH The Dalai Lama, and the Very Reverend Desmond Tutu) this interview discusses that book's companion. A In The Book of Joy, two great spiritual masters, Nobel laureates, and dear friends met for a landmark discussion on how we can live with joy even in the face of adversity. His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu shared their personal stories of struggle and renewal as well as the joy practices they use themselves every day. Now this elegantly designed, 365-day journal prompts us with inspiring quotes to help transform the joy practices into an enduring way of life. The Book of Joy Journal is the perfect companion for The Book of Joy’s many passionate readers as well as the perfect gift for anyone looking to live a more joyful life.
What is real love? What isn’t? The Mindrollers turn for inspiration to HH The Dalai Lama and the super intense poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, who said “For one human being to love another, that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks”…talk of cultivating inner spaciousness as the ultimate antidote. Jumping off from a Tricycle article, David confesses Johnny Depp envy while Raghu remembers the perverse joy in jealousy…the answer to these neurotic pulls seems always around finding the freeing route to the heart, your own heart. Sometimes, instead of fervently reaching for another soul, a spell of serious solitude might help that journey. Speaking to youth, Rilke says: “They have to learn it. With their whole being, with all their forces, gathered close about their lonely, timid, upward-beating heart, they must learn to love.”
Thupten Jinpa, HH The Dalai Lama’s English translator, is our truly honored guest. Anyone who has been present at any one of His Holiness’s live events knows how vibrant and deep Jinpa’s translations always are. Jinpa’s new book, “A Fearless Heart: How The Courage To Be Compassionate Can Transform Our Lives” totally knocked out the Mindrollers, and we are so very pleased to visit with him on the podcast. Just check out Jinpa’s markedly unpretentious yet potent teachings on the real nature of compassion.
