In this episode we present excerpts from the recent conversation (June 2024) as part of SAND's “Conversations on Palestine” around the premiere of the film Where Olive Trees Weep hosted by the directors of the film and co-founders of SAND, Zaya and Maurizio Benazzo. You can watch this full conversation and 22 others. SAND has created a program with leading historians, spiritual teachers, trauma therapists, poets and performers to complement the themes explored in the film and provide a larger historical, cultural and social context to the plight of the Palestinian people. In this powerful interfaith gathering, renowned spiritual leaders from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Buddhist traditions came together to express their solidarity with the Palestinian people's struggle for freedom, equality, and human dignity. These esteemed visionaries modeled the powerful unity that can blossom when we recognize our shared humanity and inherent dignity. Their clarion call for peace with justice in Palestine stands as an inspiration for us all to embody the highest ethical and moral principles of our diverse spiritual traditions. Guests: Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, one of the first women to become a rabbi in Jewish history, is a pioneer Jewish feminist, human rights activist, writer, visual artist, ceremonialist, community educator and master storyteller. Lynn has been a congregational rabbi since the fall of 1973, and founded the Congregation Nahalat Shalom in Albuquerque, NM, in 1980. She engages in multifaith, intergenerational and multicultural organizing in solidarity with racial, indigenous, gender justice and Palestinian liberation struggles. Currently, Lynn sits on the Rabbinic Council of Jewish Voice for Peace and is board chair of Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity. Rabbi Lynn is the author of several books, including Peace Primer II, She Who Dwells Within: A Feminist Vision of Renewed Judaism, World Beyond Borders Passover Haggadah and Trail Guide to the Torah of Nonviolence. Rabbi Lynn is a Shomeret Shalom, a practitioner of the Torah of nonviolence. Geshe Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche, founder of Ligmincha International, is a rare master of the Bön Dzogchen tradition in the West. After completing an 11-year course at Menri Monastery in India, where he earned his Geshe degree, he established Ligmincha in 1992 to preserve and introduce Tibetan Bön Buddhist teachings to the West. Fluent in English, Rinpoche is beloved for his clear, insightful teaching style that makes Tibetan practices accessible. He's highly respected across the U.S., Mexico, Europe, and Asia, with centers in the Americas, Europe, and India. Author of 10 books, including "Wonders of the Natural Mind" and "The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep," Rinpoche shares the profound wisdom of Bön Dzogchen. Rev. Deborah Lee, Executive Director of the Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity since 2018, brings over 30 years of experience in faith-based social justice. Her expertise spans popular education, community organizing, and advocacy, focusing on issues like race, gender, economic justice, LGBTQ inclusion, and immigrant rights. Under her leadership, the organization has doubled in size and impact. They've closed detention centers, prevented deportations, supported immigrant youth, and established Sanctuary congregations. Notably, they're working to divest from carceral systems and invest in thriving communities. Rev. Lee envisions a world without harm, where every person is considered sacred across bars and borders. On this episode, Laura Chandler interviews Geshe Dangsong Namgyal, the founder of Kungsong Gar Meditation Center in Santa Cruz, and author of the book, Holy Women of Great Perfection: Thirty Signs and Meanings of Ultimate Nature in the Ancient Tibetan Tradition. And she is joined by a special guest co-host, Isa Gucciardi, Ph.D., author of The New Return to the Great Mother and Founding Director of the Foundation of the Sacred Stream. In this conversation, we talk with Geshe Namgyal about his book, teachings, and the practice of Pure Dzogen. He explains why he chose to highlight the wisdom and teaching of female deities in his book, particularly in light of the changing, but still strongly patriarchal tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He also talks about the pan-Buddhist practice of Rime, a movement in Tibetan Buddhism that is non-sectarian, as well as the practice of Pure Dzogchen. He offers that no matter what one's background—country, gender, age, race, beliefs or history of painful experiences and emotions, the study and practice of the Pure Dzogchen teachings can help people discover true peace, strength, and fearlessness in life; and confidence in an eventual, positive death and rebirth experience. Sherab Nyingpo Teaching by Geshe Lobsang Dawa The Heart Sūtra or Sherab Nyingpo (ཤེས་རབ་སྙིང་པོ་) is perhaps the most popular Buddhist sūtra and certainly the sūtra most widely used and chanted in Tibet. Its full title in Sanskrit is Bhagavatīprajñāpāramitāhṛdaya and in Tibetan བཅོམ་ལྡན་འདས་མ་ཤེས་རབ་ཀྱི་ཕ་རོལ་ཏུ་ཕྱིན་པའི་སྙིང་པོ་ which translates as 'The Heart of the Blessed Perfection of Wisdom.' The followers of Mahāyāna Buddhism consider it as a sacred literature which falls within the category of the words of the Buddha. Thus, it is placed within the Perfection of Wisdom (ཤེར་ཕྱྱིན་) section of the kangyur (བཀའ་འགྱུར་) canon. According to the sūtra itself, the Heart Sūtra was taught by the Buddha while he was on Vulture Peak, Rajagṛha with his monastic and Bodhisattva followers. The Buddha entered a meditation state called Profound Illumination and through his power made Śāriputra query Avalokiteśvara about how a person engages in the practice of Perfection of Wisdom. The main sūtra is the response Avalokiteśvara gives Śāriputra instructing how a son or daughter of a noble family should view as empty (སྟོང་པར་རྣམ་པར་བལྟ་བར་བྱ་) everything including form, sensation, feelings, volitions, consciousness, the six sense faculties, the six sense fields, the six consciousnesses, the twelve links of dependent origination and the four nobles. He puts this in the formulaic phrase: form is emptiness, emptiness is form, emptiness is no other than form and form is no other than emptiness. .. #thongdrol #sherabnyingpo #buddha #teachings #buddhism #meditation #perfectionofwisdom #emptiness ... Thongdrol is a Tibetan word that means liberation through seeing. On a basic level, it can be anything that turns the person to look towards the spiritual path. Thongdrol strives to be a bridge connecting interested people to the precious teachings of the Buddha, on training our mind towards the ultimate realisation of the true existence of life. Of the impermanence and empty nature of the things and moments that surround us. The precious teachers are an inspiration and their teachings are an aspiration worth seeking.

Contemplative traditions suggest that the world as we perceive it is the manifestation of a deeper, unseen process, that can be investigated through meditation and personal inquiry. To what extent can this fundamental level be studied scientifically? And what can this investigation tell us about the nature of reality and consciousness?Biologist Dr. Rupert Sheldrake and Buddhist teacher Geshe Tenzin Namdak will discuss how science and contemplative traditions can tackle big questions regarding the nature of reality, the interconnectedness of all phenomena and the relation between consciousness and the material world. Our speakers will also touch upon David Bohm's theory of implicate order and Dr. Sheldrake's own hypothesis of formative causation, discussing the connections between these ideas and the insight achieved through contemplative practice.About Our Speakers:Rupert Sheldrake, PhD, is a biologist and author of ninety technical papers and eight books, including The Science Delusion, and the co-author of six books.
