Beacon fifth graders help restock trout If you saw 37 fifth graders marching with fish signs down Churchill Street in Beacon on May 16, they were off to release 60 trout friends into Fishkill Creek. The children, who attend South Avenue Elementary, had given the 3-inch brown trout names like Holiday, Jeremy, Jeff, Billy Bigback, Patricia Felicia Petunia, Little Jim Bob and Li'l Shoddy. It was the culmination of an eight-month school project about trout, their habitat and conservation, and the importance of caring about nature. "Why would you care about the environment if you're not connected to it in any way?" asked Aaron Burke, the school librarian who runs the project. "This is a way to help make that connection. Every time they drive over that bridge, they'll think, 'I wonder if Fred is in there.' " Students in 5,000 schools nationwide and more than 350 in New York are conducting similar releases as part of Trout in the Classroom, a program organized each spring for more than 30 years by the conservation group Trout Unlimited. "The big goal of the program is to create this connection with students in their watershed and their drinking water," said Cecily Nordstrom, the nonprofit's stream education manager. Burke has worked with Trout in the Classroom for five years and starts each fall with a small jar of trout eggs hatched in an aquarium in the school library. He gets the eggs from the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The DEC uses the same stock in hatcheries that annually produce 2 million trout to stock streams and lakes. The state adds 6,100 brown trout each spring to Fishkill Creek, which starts in Union Vale and flows 33 miles through Dutchess County before passing through Beacon and emptying into the Hudson River. About 90 percent of those trout are 9-inch yearlings. Starting in 2020, about 10 percent of stocked trout were 13-inch two-year-olds, giving anglers "a shot at catching one of those nice larger fish," said Fred Henson, the DEC's cold water fisheries leader. Photos by Ross Corsair Henson explained that Fishkill Creek is a "put-and-take" fishery, which means the fish are put in the stream and quickly taken out by anglers fishing in places like Madam Brett Park off Tioronda Avenue. Stocked trout rarely survive to reproduce. Without stocking in Fishkill Creek, Henson said, "you wouldn't have a fishery." Development along streams like Fishkill Creek undermines the clean, cold water needed for trout to thrive, he said. As with many waterways in developed areas, stormwater runoff pollutes the creek and fewer trees leads to rising water temperatures. Henson said that the state reduced stocking last year in Beacon's section of Fishkill Creek to 400 trout because fewer property owners allow fishing. Until 2023, the state was stocking the section with 1,100 brown trout, he said. "As more and more large properties are subdivided and development increases in the Hudson Valley and in Dutchess County, we're limited by landowners who are unwilling to let the public access trout streams for recreation," said Henson. The South Avenue Elementary release was at a public greenway behind the Hudson Valley Brewery. Burke had a tabletop model of a watershed to show how development impacts a waterway. Teachers led scavenger hunts while children took turns releasing trout. Mark Jones, a board member of the Mid-Hudson chapter of Trout Unlimited, was there to teach fly casting. While most of its members are anglers, Jones emphasized that his chapter's mission is "to show the importance of stream preservation." On Fishkill Creek, he said the chapter has done clean-ups and tree plantings that reduce bank erosion. April Stark, another member of the Mid-Hudson chapter, demonstrated fly tying and explained that a river with healthy bugs produces healthy trout. "Trout only live in good, clean water," she said. "So, when you see trout who are able to thrive wi...

Our interview with Sergei Krasikov is a must-listen if you're into trails, open spaces, water sheds and being outside in any weather.   Originally from Belarus, Sergei has made Beacon his home in every sense. He is a community builder and civic volunteer with a special focus on land conservation. As the chair of the Conservation Advisory Committee and founder of the Fishkill Creek Watershed Alliance, he has advanced a city-wide composting program, trail clearing, a water testing program and more. Right now he's focused on an inventory of open spaces that could eventually be adopted into the city's comprehensive plan.    On top of all that, Sergei is running for City Council for the consequential 2026-2028 term. City business aside, it'll come as no surprise that Sergei is an active outdoorsman – a trail runner, swimmer and cross-country skier. We spent a chunk of this interview talking about things listeners can do outside in Beacon and surrounding areas.  Links and further reading:  Earth Day cleanup. Beacon artist examines the shock of parenting Judging by several titles of her experimental photographs - "Bad Dream," "Boiling Point," "Nothing Left to Give" - motherhood challenged Emma McDonald Diamond. For the first time in 10 years, she has assembled a solo show, The Thief, which plumbs the depths of emotion. It opens Saturday (Jan. 11) at Super Secret Projects in Beacon. "There's a lot of joy being a parent, but I lost so many things, like my spontaneity, my individuality and my creativity," says McDonald Diamond, 40. "Now, I've bounced back and found myself again." The artist is upbeat. She and her husband can tap into a full family system to help with their two boys, ages 2 and 4. But early on, she found it difficult to cope. One day, an overtired son could not stop crying or be consoled for "what felt like eternity," she says. "I thought about taking him to the hospital. I didn't know what to do." Eventually, he fell asleep in her arms as they sat in a rocking chair, a gentle breeze sweeping over the porch, "but it was something I've never experienced before, and it shocked me to the core." Most of the imagery in the exhibit is mired in the dire times. With elaborate staging, a Polaroid Lab, multiple manipulations, unorthodox darkroom techniques and a vintage 120mm Rolleiflex camera, McDonald Diamond aimed to create works that were ethereal and haunting. She dislikes self-portraits but trained the camera on herself for several shots, including "Only the Wind," which refers to the breeze that helped calm her son. As she reposes in a bathtub, eyes closed, tilting toward the camera, a big black blotch covers part of her head. McDonald Diamond, or friend and model Alice Graff, also pose covered with a membrane of chiffon as if they're inhabiting a gauzy womb or cocoon, distanced from the world. In "Shell," Graff lies in a fetal position with her back to the camera and covered in black twine, as if tied down. "Boiling Point" "Control" "Nothing Left to Give" "Only the Wind" "Shell" Several photos, taken through a rippled glass plate, generate harrowing, splintering effects. The subject in "GODS" seems to be suffering from a nightmarish migraine as head, face and hands look like they're splitting apart. Beyond art, McDonald Diamond says another aid to her recovery was the Beacon community. After moving from Brooklyn in 2021, McDonald Diamond plunged right in, co-founding the Beacon Photo Club, which meets monthly at Hudson Valley Brewery. The group's first exhibition, Black & White, at Big Mouth Coffee Roasters, 387 Main St., continues through Jan. 30. A couple of images in The Thief hint at McDonald Diamond's turnaround. In "Two Truths," Graff stands seminude, hinting a smile with hands clasped behind her head and elbows sticking out. The image suggests movement, as if she's boogying to a disco beat. Even more revealing is "Don't Look for Me in Person I Was Yesterday," a 5-foot sculpture that strings 624 photos together with trellis netting and looks like scales on a giant fish. From the top, shades progressively fade from inky-dark hues into gray midway, ending at the bottom with bright shots of her smiling children. "The last thing I want is for someone to see this show and think, 'I'll never have kids,'" McDonald Diamond says. "My mother, a pediatric nurse practitioner, always said that if people knew how hard it is to raise a child before becoming parents, there would be fewer people." Super Secret Projects is located at 484 Main St. in Beacon. The Thief opens on Jan. 11 with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. See supersecretprojects.com. The Beacon Photo Club next meets on Thursday (Jan. 16). See beaconphotoclub.com.

Thinking about most of their beers as a triangle, Jason Synan and Mike Renganeschi the brewers behind Hudson Valley Brewery, want to focus on acidity, hops, and botanicals. However, each characteristic doesn’t play the traditional role in their beers that one might expect, and that’s exactly how the brewers want it. Here they discuss their IPAs and how they blend down from an acidic beer base, going strong with botanicals, and using hops that convey more than just bitterness. Happy 1 Year Anniversary! Can't believe it's been a whole year since we started talking about all this weird stuff and drinking a ton of beers in the basement. So, here's a special anniversary bonus episode: we go through all the beers we've drank on the pod and rate them tournament style. It was pretty rough since we drank some amazing stuff but just like Highlander, there can be only one! Special thanks to Mike of Hudson Valley Brewery for all the hookups, and very extra special thanks to everyone who's listened. We hope you all like it as much as we like doing it, it's been super fun and we're excited to see where we go, (and what we drink)in the future! Excelsior! Beers: Kane Brewing/Kent Falls Brewing Co. - Black Tie Optional Brut IPA, Industrial Arts Brewing - Week 104 Brut IPA, Foam Brewers - Youth Lagoon DIPA, The Veil Brewing Co. - Crucial Taunt DIPA and Pina Colada Tastee Sour Ale.
