Jimmy Page was in rough shape by the end of Led Zeppelin. His addictions had ravaged his body and he didn't contribute nearly as much to 1979's In Through The Out Door as he did all previous Zeppelin records. After the death of John Bonham, Jimmy fulfilled his obligations to release Coda, provided the soundtrack to Death Wish 2 as a favor to his neighbor and embarked on a brief fundraiser tour with lots of legends - The ARMS Tour. But he hadn't been very creative and wasn't keeping himself in match shape. After spending some time with his Swan Song brother Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), he concocted a plan to put together a new supergroup for the 80s. WIth Rodgers handling vocal and primary songwriter duties, Jimmy also enlisted Chris Slade (Tom Jones, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, AC/DC, UAWIL #91 guest) and "The Fretless Monster" Tony Franklin who he worked with on Roy Harper's album Whatever Happened to Jugula? This powerful lineup was to be the vehicle that would rejuvenate Jimmy Page and put him back on the road to superstardom. However, Page's contributions weren't what fans had come to expect from the guitar hero and it seemed that Jimmy was a bit out of place in a world dominated by MTV. Single Radioactive was an AOR hit and showcased a bit of what the band could do, ultimately helping their self-titled debut to gold status in the US. But most of the album is uneven and Page isn't showing up with the killer solos that were his calling card. However, Tony Franklin is an absolute monster on this record, filling in the gaps that Page leaves between his flourishes and playing well off the ever steady Slade. While Rodgers vocals are as strong as ever, his songwriting doesn't quite live up to the standard of his previous bands. It was a solid debut which led to a strong sophomore effort in Mean Business (1986) but because it celebrates it's 40th on February 11, 2025, we thought we'd take a hard look at The Firm and why it didn't hit the heights we all hoped it would Check out our new website: Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%! Today's guest makes me happy. It's legendary drummer, Chris Slade. From his humble beginnings, he became the go-to drummer for some of the biggest names in rock. He tells me about the entertainment gene that runs through his family, buying his way out of school so he could play drums, and how working in a show shop got him a gig with Tom Jones. And speaking of Tom Jones, Chris tells what really happened with the infamous Tom Jones panty story. Chris had the opportunity to record with Joe Meek, who fascinates me. After Tom Jones, Chris found himself in a band with Olivia Newton-John where he was payed and didn't play a note. But some of Chris' most well known work was yet to come. He played on the biggest hits by Manfred Mann's Earth Band (yes, including Blinded By The Light). He tells an amazing story about both David Gilmour and Jimmy Page. I discovered Chris during his time with Jimmy and the band The Firm. After that, he joined AC/DC for five years and played in the enormous Russian show for 1.5 million people! He has a new album out with his own band, Chris Slade Timeline. It a double album with one disc being originals and the other covers of songs from his long and storied career; hence the name Timeline. Check out chrisslade.com for links and ways to buy the album. Today I sit down with legendary drummer Chris Slade. Chris started out his professional career at 16 years old playing drums for Tom Jones. From there he became a founding member of Manfred Mann's Earth Band recording 8 studio albums from 1972 to 1978. After a 1 year tour with the great David Gilmour another legend Jimmy Page called him to join the super group The Firm. Most people really know Chris from his time in AC/DC recording and touring on the smash hit record The Razors Edge. That record was loaded with hits including Thunderstuck, Moneytalks and Are You Ready. After the return of Phil Rudd, Chris moved on and played in his own group until 2015 when he was asked to return to AC/DC after Phil Rudd had legal problems. Barry compared the story structure of Price to Pay to that of Carolina Drama by The Raconteurs and the lyrical structure to that of Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Welcome to The Old Dog Pack Show — the world's premier podcast regarding the mind, body, soul, and money of the middle-aged man. In episode 76, Dr. Rees and Craig delve into all things mysterious and mystical and tell their own incredible tales of supernatural experiences. That Dr. Rees's personal experience with dark forces did not make national news is astounding. Craig sheds a little light (very little) on the mercurial position of county judge in Texas, but to make up for that snoozefest, he totally redeems himself by telling what might be the greatest joke ever told. Finally, our heroes take a semi-deep dive into Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Sure, you can check us out at the usual outposts such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts, but for those of you who need more visual stimulation, you can now check out the show on YouTube at YouTube.com/@olddogpack. If you would like to do us a big favor, go on over to Apple Podcasts and leave a 5 star rating and/or a short review. We may not deserve it yet, but we will one of these days.
