National Road Safety Week kicks off today, a time to reflect on the currentpoor driving standard in this state, National Road Safety Week the projectof Peter Frazer whose daughter Sarah was tragically killed by a truck driverin a totally avoidable crash on the Hume Highway at Mittigong in February2012. Since then, Peter has devoted his life to improving road safety -founding SARAH, standing for Safer Australian Roads and Highways. Thedriving force behind Australia’s National Road Safety Week and the roadsafety symbol the Yellow Ribbon. A campaign suggesting you wear ayellow ribbon on yourself and your car to show your support and make apledge on the SARAH website – “to drive so others survive” – to me giventhe total disregard by many motorists to road safety wearing a yellowribbon on yourself and your car is far too weak a message to what is aworsening problem year on year. We’ve just had two long weekends withincreased fatalities and numerous injuries. It’s clear there has beensubstantial vehicle growth in N.S.W. – a lot of new drivers mainly fromoverseas with poor knowledge of our road rules and driving conditions –you witness it almost daily – driver behavior and attitude is at an all-timelow, and driver education and compliance testing is in need of a radicaloverhaul. In 1989, the bridge became the site of a chilling case: the untimely deaths of two 15-year-old boys, Matthew Kelly and Jaymie Egner, who were discovered inside one of the bridge's 33m high pylons. Two men were “sunbaking naked” on the NSW south coast when they were “startled by a deer” and ran into a national park, where they had to be rescued by emergency services – before being hit with $1000 fines.NSW's top cop relayed the bizarre story at a press conference on Monday where he gave an update on the latest fines issued for breaches of the Covid-19 lockdown.Forty-four people were issued with tickets over the past 24 hours, mostly for failing to wear a mask but also for being out of their homes or outside of the Greater Sydney area “without a reasonable excuse”.“Unbelievably, we saw two men sunbaking naked on a beach on the south coast,” NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said.“They were startled by a deer, ran into the national park and got lost. Not only did they require assistance from SES and police to rescue them, they also both received a ticket for $1000.”Mr Fuller said it was “only a small percentage” of people who were not following the health orders, “but I can assure you, if you breach the health orders or the guidelines, you will be punished”.In a media release, NSW Police provided more detail about the rescue of the men from the Royal National Park at Otford.“About 6pm on Sunday, the men called for assistance after becoming lost in bushland during a visit to a remote beach,” police said.“Police Rescue assisted by the State Emergency Service, NSW Ambulance and Polair responded to the area, locating a 30-year-old man naked and carrying a backpack on the walking track near Lady Wakehurst Drive. After a further search, a 49-year-old man, partially clothed, was also located. The men told police they were on a nearby beach when they ran into bushland after being startled by a deer.”The men were taken to St George Police Station and issued $1000 fines for breaching the current public health order prohibiting those from Greater Sydney travelling outside the region. In a separate incident, a Shellharbour cafe operator has been charged and is “subject to strict bail conditions” after neither she nor her staff were wearing masks.“About 9.40am, officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attended a cafe in Addison Street responding to reports staff were failing to comply with the current public health orders,” police said.“When officers arrived, they saw neither the staff or the operator were wearing face masks. The operator was reminded of her obligations under the current health orders but allegedly refused to comply.”The two staff members put masks on but the 38-year-old woman was arrested. She was charged with failing to comply with the direction to wear masks in retail premises, and for not ensuring her employees were wearing masks.“She was given bail conditions to strictly comply with the public health orders and not to incite or encourage others to defy them,” police said.“She is due to appear in Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday 21 July 2021.”In another incident, police stopped a car on the Hume Highway at Goulburn. The driver, a 33-year-old man from Ermington, was issued with a $1000 fine and ordered to immediately return to Sydney.“Police have received hundreds of calls from the public over the weekend reporting potential public health order breaches, and would like to thank the vast majority of the community for their co-operation with the new rules,” police said.text by Frank Chung, news.com.au

Climate urgency spawns more pledges to disrupt using non-violent civil disobedience. Sergei, Greg and The Treason March supporters are walking from Sydney to Canberra along the edge of the  Hume Highway. " Their signs say:  "  Climate Crisis: We Will Starve @LASTGENERATION "    " We are F%U£ED, We are young. We are coming"    "Climate Criminals Kill Kids" They are calling on people to  join them in a future event  using non- violent civil disobedience to block the Hume Highway  that takes most traffic between the power hubs: Sydney and Canberra, to force the laggard Australian government to take urgent  action on climate change. This Earth Matters reveals the values and motivation that would call  on people to block a highway.  It is important that the Australian people and government understand why many people  who are very concerned  about global warming impacts, including ecological and social collapse are now engaging  in non violent civil disobedience.  They are getting in harms way in order to stop a greater harmer. As Sergei Rebel says : "Its time to do something  because with 510 ppm equivalents of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, 3 degrees of warming is locked  in, and  what is often omitted from the narrative of global warming is what that actually means.  That means our young people in the future will be rounded up and sent to war. What that  means is there is going to be mass migration  of people and unfarmable land to live on. What that means is social collapse. What that means is massive rape and slaughter of my generation,  the people that are alive today.  Its 2021  and the future they have been warning us about is here and its up to us to get it  the way of this death machine; which  of course is  non violent civil disobedience which involves arrest and prison.  This is called getting in harms way in order to stop a greater harmer. So  am calling on all young people to join me." Isabell is organising with  Blockade Australia. She explains the urgent need to immediately avoid climate tipping points of no return. This urgency and her values led her to adopt climate activism as her work  in order to  act on what she knows is true and bring about the needed change. Guests: Sergei, Lesley, Greg: Treason March,  @LASTGENERATION                            Isabell:  Blockade Australia Music: Andy Paine: Song: Your Mission, Album: The Politics of Possibility Find it on "Bandcamp" Links: Blockade Australia             Last Generation | Facebook            Last Generation  Last Generation News: Seriously ugly: here's how Australia will look if the world heats by 3°C this century (theconversation.com)  This weeks show  #1292 was produced by Bec Horridge

Welcome to Episode 60 of Good Will Hunters. In this episode, I’m chatting to Bridi Rice. Prior to joining ACFID, Bridi was a Senior Manager at Ernst & Young, delivering strategy, policy and project advice for domestic and international governments on social justice matters. She also worked in Papua New Guinea for three years as the Australian Government’s Senior Legal Adviser on anti-corruption and money laundering. Bridi has over 12 years’ experience in human rights and international development, having worked in Sri Lanka, Maldives, Vietnam, Uganda, Qatar and the Pacific. She is currently completing postgraduate research with La Trobe University on counterpart perspectives of expatriate advisers in Papua New Guinea. Bridi is an emerging leader in the sector who is passionate about the intersection of development and human security – putting humans at the heart Australia’s international development cooperation program. Bridi is a regular speaker to diplomatic and conference audiences in Australia and abroad. I had the great honour of working with Bridi throughout 2019, and she is strikingly candid, articulate, and knowledgable. She’s a wealth of insight and experience, and she shares a lot in this episode, so I hope you enjoy it. As we go to air today, much of the East Coast of Australia is on fire. I myself wad evacuated from my Summer holiday in the town of Thredbo, in the Southern Slopes of NSW. As we drove up the Hume Highway to Sydney, being diverted on and off the road by the Emergency Services personnel, it was abundantly clear that this is not as business as usual. This is a new era of environmental damage for Australia, as over 9 billion hectares of our forests burn, far outnumbering other recent fires we’ve seen internationally. As we debate how we can provide more resources to our fire-affected communities and to our emergency services, we also remain in the middle of a debate over the future of our aid policy. When the need is greater at home, it can invoke debate over how we prioritise our spending. It’s a topic I’ll be bringing up with some of our guests in the coming weeks. We’re on the look out for new sponsors. If you’re a fantastic, socially-conscious, for purpose organisation, and you’d like to share your great work with over ten thousand listeners across 56 countries, then please get in touch! Over a series of searches authorities would discover the remains of 7 individuals who had fallen victim to Milat while hitchhiking through the region.
