19 years after the sleeper Japanese hit, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, South Korean filmmakers decided to retool the anime into a live action film. If you live in the US, this is a 'Netflix Original Film' fully equipped with multiple language and subtitle options (but I say the original Korean is optimal). What is most shocking is the fact this property was remade. No one was asking for it and Jin-Roh doesn't have the international footprint like Ghost in the Shell or Akira. Hot off the success of Ghost in the Shell, famed anime creator Mamoru Oshii returned as writer to finish his trilogy based on his Kerberos Panzer Cop manga. Instead of opting for a third live action installment, he chose breathtaking, realistic animation. Drawing from European folktales and Shakespearean plays, Oshii presents a stark alternate history of WWII Japan where civil war plays out amidst a star-crossed, fateful love story. Unlike Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball Z or Akira, not many remember this "lost anime film." 21 years after its release, it has landed on a number of free and premium streaming platforms causing it to gain a new audience. Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan take a trip to Haddonfield, Illinois for another round with The Shape by talking about the true sequel to Halloween...that's also called Halloween. Can David Gordon Green's sequel live up to the hype of John Carpenter's endorsement and involvement? How do the themes match up to the original's spare template? Is it too funny? We ended up talking about some important bits of media including Mike Flanagan's astonishing Netflix miniseries, The Haunting of Hill House. Dylan talks about the overall feeling of the series and how it may be Flanagan's best work since Oculus. He talks about whether it can match up to a general documentary as well as any and every ethical boundary it may have crossed. Can there be a world where a movie directed by Timo Tjahjanto can be better than a film directed by Kim Jee-woon? Quite possibly.
