Prophecy Radio episode #111 is our biggest and best episode yet. After attending several press conferences during Percy Jackson and the Olympians press week, we break down all the new information and behind-the-scenes stories. We also got to watch the first two episodes of the show, so we give you our spoiler-free thoughts on our initial reactions. December 20 is fast approaching! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:43) Join the Prophecy Radio Reading Room group on Facebook! Black Sails is coming to Netflix US in January. The Sun and the Star is on Kirkus' Best Of 2023 Middle Grade list. If you went to one of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians advanced screenings, be sure to let us know! Did you see the new Percy Jackson character posters? Don't forget the quick clip of Percy, Nancy, and Mrs. Dodds at the museum. There's a Your Morning interview with Walker, Leah, and Aryan. We also got posters of Medusa, Alecto, and the minotaur. Jason Mantzoukas was on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The trio present Greek Mythology 101 and absolutely kill it. This video also gave us our first look at the Fates and the Oracle. There's new promo left and right, like this clip with Grover saying, “Bad dog!” to Cerberus. Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused with the trio will premiere soon. We LOVE that Logan sent in a little message to Walker. Liam is getting his own show called Riptide Radio, and we couldn't be happier! Rick answers five questions from Instagram, and then answers some more in his December 13 blog post. Percy Jackson and the Olympians press week (00:27:50) We've got A LOT of interviews to cover, so sit back and enjoy our breakdown of the highlights. (You can also read the accompanying article.) First up, we've got showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz, plus Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri. How familiar were the kids with the books? How did they make these characters their own? Which scenes best showcased Percabeth? What was it like being on the Camp Half-Blood set? Someone asked Walker if he was going to be in Deadpool 3! What aspect of their own personalities did they put into their characters? Which scenes were they most excited to film? How much babysitting did Aryan have to do!? How did they toe the line between being faithful to the books and bringing this story to life in a different medium? What did they take home from the set? (Aryan's answer got us VERY excited.) What did Walker learn from his co-stars? Our friends at Monster Donut Podcast got to ask what their favorite myths are. There were several questions about being faithful to the books, and we love Jon and Dan's answers. Next up, we got to talk to Jeff White, the visual effects supervisor for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. How did the team make the world of Percy Jackson stand out? What creature did they have the most fun creating? We get some really cool behind-the-scenes information about how Chiron was brought to life. We also learned how much Aryan did to bring Grover to the small screen. Jeff also talked about the Volume stage and how integral it was to creating the world of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He also told us a few fun stories about figuring out different ways to bring aspects of the story alive, like Riptide and Iris Messaging. What drew Jeff to this project? Time and time again, everyone said how often they'd go back to the books for inspiration! Next up, we heard from set designer Dan Henna and costume designer Tish Monaghan. They both talk about their process for expanding on what was given in the books. We also learn how they both helped bring Camp Half-Blood to life. Hearing about Alecto's transformation really added to our feelings about the scene. There was so much talk about Medusa's portrayal, and we're even more excited to see her on screen now. And who can forget about the Lotus Hotel and Casino? They both describe their favorite costumes and sets. Again, the constant mantra on set was “go back to the book.” Lastly, we also got to hear from Rick and Becky Riordan! There was lots of talking about refreshing the story and doing some things Rick wished he would've done 20 years ago. They also talk about how they just knew when they found the trio. There were no pre-conceived notions about who would be cast as the gods. Becky commented on the fact that they got to expand upon Luke's motivations. We also learn about some moments from the series that can't be found in the book. They didn't want slapstick comedy, but there are still plenty of laughs. It's important that the show feels modern and timeless. We can't wait to learn more about Sally and Poseidon's relationship! Did you know that Rick and Becky didn't go see Camp Half-Blood until it was all finished? We were so excited to learn how important Becky was to the process of adapting the series. Seaweed Brain Podcast got to ask them if Percabeth was the greatest love story of all time! Would we want to see a Percy Jackson and the Olympians musical episode? We'll have more to discuss next week! Be sure to leave us your thoughts! Percy Jackson and the Olympians episodes 1 and 2 spoiler-free review (02:12:21) We got to see Percy Jackson and the Olympians episodes 1 and 2 ahead of the premiere date and WE'RE SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS SHOW. First, we have to give you our overall thoughts, which is that we absolutely loved the episodes we got to see. The quality of the show is immaculate, between the set production, the costuming, and the visual effects. It's also extremely accurate to the source material! Anything they changed was small-scale, and felt logical for the tone of the story. Seeing Camp Half-Blood was surreal, and the Big House was beautiful! It was amazing that they somehow made everyone look like individuals despite all wearing the same shirts. And Chiron and Mr. D's costumes were perfect and fit them so well. We talk more about the dryad that Tish Monaghan mentioned. Okay, but now we need to get into our thoughts on everyone's performances. Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson is literally perfect. He OWNS this character. We also can't get enough of Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth Chase. She's silent a lot through her scenes, but she says SO MUCH. And then there's Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood. He's got great chemistry with Walker, and his comedic timing is also genius. But we were super impressed by Virginia Kull as Sally Jackson. And no one will be surprised that Jason Mantzoukas is the perfect Dionysus. And the same goes for Glynn Turman as Chiron, who is more perfect than anyone could've dreamed. This is, without a doubt, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians adaptation that we've always dreamed of. Feedback (02:42:58) Mac wants to know if CRITICS will enjoy the show? Ark is curious if there are some fan-favorite quotes that made it into the series. Dr. Tiezn needs to know more about Camp Half-Blood coming to life. Solomon's son wants to know if the show is accurate to the book. Meanwhile, Ennis is worried about Grover's hair. We also hear from Rebeca, who talks about Chalice of the Gods and might start her own podcast in Spanish! Darcy also writes in to tell us which Rick Riordan Presents book are currently optioned and at which streaming services. Stick around for our updated schedule! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 112, in which we'll discuss Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 1 in all its glory! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Titus Paar made his first feature film at the age of fifteen on a cheap video camera with a bunch of mates. It was crap, he says, but the point is, he managed it. It's that same can-do spirit that's taken him from shooting on a zero budget to working with Hollywood stars today. If you're feeling even slightly jaded from banging your head against a brick wall funding your first or next feature film and could do with a shot of inspiration, this episode is for you. Towards the end of 2023, I got together with actor, writer/director and producer, Titus Paar. He's the kind of guy who when faced with 100 rejections in a row will simply reach out to friends and family, pitch them his mad cap adventure and go do it anyway. It's that can-do spirit that's taken him from shooting on a zero budget to working with Hollywood stars. And no, he's not based in LA, he's based in a village in Sweden. Out in the wilderness, he says. All that wide open space keeps him chilled and inspired. Support the show

✒️ Born 150 years ago, on January 28, 1873, the French novelist Colette is very celebrated this week in France. And rightly so. This very original writer had a tumultuous personal and creative life at the turn of the 20th century. And while she didn't consider herself a feminist, she has certainly been seen as a feminist icon as well as a groundbreaking author for decades to come.

Netflix reveals how much you'll pay to watch with ads In the USA the new "Basic with Ads" plan will be $6.99 a month, saving folks around $3 a month. It won't allow downloads or offline viewing, and won't offer 4K content, or multiple devices. Expect 4-5 minutes of ads an hour, ads will be 15-30 seconds in length, and they'll be both before and during the show. It's launching in 12 countries in November, but not in NZ just yet. US government looking to ban Huawei The FCC has prepared a draft order according to CNN sources, which would block sales of their new telco equipment in the US on national security grounds. The FCC today needs to sign off on any device which emits a frequency before it's sold, to prevent harm. This is in direct response to President Joe Biden's Secure Equipment Act signed last year. One of our original podcasters (Ben) decided we should watch Nighthawks from 1981.. so we did. Was it good? Is it worth a watch in 2020? Is it just a total cheeseball action flick? Hot off the success of Ghost in the Shell, famed anime creator Mamoru Oshii returned as writer to finish his trilogy based on his Kerberos Panzer Cop manga. Instead of opting for a third live action installment, he chose breathtaking, realistic animation. Drawing from European folktales and Shakespearean plays, Oshii presents a stark alternate history of WWII Japan where civil war plays out amidst a star-crossed, fateful love story. Unlike Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball Z or Akira, not many remember this "lost anime film." 21 years after its release, it has landed on a number of free and premium streaming platforms causing it to gain a new audience. Episode 40: Wynonna Earp Season 2 (Note: Because of the way this episode was recorded, the audio isn't as clean as usual. Everything is audible, but some of the hiccups that get edited out couldn't be this time.) Andi managed to get Lise into the paranormal Canadian awesome that is Wynonna Earp and now here they are doing a talk about Season 2, which gave more of everything that is so good about the show, but also delved even more into the relationships between characters and introduced a few more—one becomes part of our Earp posse, the other proves a nice foil for Doc Holliday and the others prove to be amazing paranormal villain-types. Both Andi and Lise love how the writing of the show is so strong and weaves so many subplots into the main themes and narratives and how you miss things the first time through and when you re-watch, it’s a richer experience, in some ways, than the first time through because you then see how the threads of the show are woven together so tightly and how the character arcs evolve. Andi and Lise talk about Season 1 of Wynonna Earp Season 2 trailer HERE Watch Season 1 and 2 on Netflix (US and Canada). Watch Season 3 live or stream episodes on SyFy (US) and Space (Canada) ******** ALSO! IF YOU ARE UK-BASED, HERE’S A CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN AN IMPORTANT SURVEY. Details, via Alison Condron at the LGBT Foundation in Manchester: I work for the Women’s Programme at LGBT Foundation in Manchester. We have just launched a major piece of research into the sexual wellbeing of women who have sex with women. As part of our annual health campaign for lesbian and bisexual women, we are working closely with renowned researcher Professor Catherine Meads - who has been conducting research into LGBT health needs since 1992 – to launch a large-scale survey asking women who have sex with women* (WSW) about their experiences centred around sexual wellbeing. This survey aims to look past a clinical approach to sexual health to consider other key factors including pleasure, exploration, health, behaviour, access to services, confidence, and consent. This survey will run from August-November 2018 and will be followed by themed national focus groups later in the year, based on preliminary survey findings. You can read more information about it and access the survey here: bit.ly/WSWsurvey2018 Thank you!
Andi and Lise had their minds completely blown by “Nanette,” the comedy show/performance piece by Tasmanian comedienne Hannah Gadsby, currently available on Netflix. In this brilliant and searing examination of comedy and who it serves, “Art, [Gadsby] makes clear—from painting to comedy—does not liberate everyone equally. It can replicate the same privileges and exclusions as the culture in which it was made,” Moira Donegan says in her piece on “Nanette” in the New Yorker. “Nanette” is a blistering tour de force in which Gadsby lays part of her soul bare and then leaves the audience to grapple with its role in perpetuating the marginalization of those it demands entertain us. And in the wake of the 2016 election and the #MeToo movement, Gadsby’s indictment of homophobia and misogyny and her dissection of comedy has become a phenomenon and a statement. “I really was writing as though I was throwing a grenade,” Gadsby told Rolling Stone, “and I fully expected for the show to seal me off in the margins. I am so shocked and overwhelmingly stunned. It’s become bigger than me. And I’m happy for that.” Both Andi and Lise are of the opinion that this is the first major piece of art—a blistering fusion of comedy and storytelling—to emerge since the 2016 elections and will probably come to define this era in ways we don’t yet even know. Hannah Gadsby’s “Nanette” on Netflix (US; check your local Netflix site if you’re not in the US). Gadsby’s just released memoir, Ten Steps to Nanette is available at various booksellers. This week, the Grue-Crew check out some artificial intelligence, head into the forest to search for a missing person, and follow Father Riley to an Irish home for 'fallen women'. Yup, we're doomed. First up is the anthology feature A.I. Tales from directors Nelson Lee, Kristen Hilkert, Amir Reichart, and Vitaly Verlov. The second film, Calibre from director Matt Palmer, features a pair of terrific performances from Jack Lowden and Martin McCann. Rounding out the show is the found footage film The Devil's Doorway from director Aislinn Clarke featuring a suspenseful blend of supernatural and demon possession. The hunt is on for the diamond in the rough. Doc Rotten from Horror News Radio and Jeff Mohr from Decades of Horror: The Classic Era are joined by Rafe Telsch and Vanessa Thompson. All the characters are believable. All the situations they’re put in are believable." - Vanessa "I really enjoyed this gathering together of four short-form films and I don’t think there’s a weak one in the bunch. … I think they are all quite fantastic! You should check it out!" - Jeff "Your knuckles are white, wondering what is going to happen and what does happen is, I think, equally horrific. I was really caught up in this!" - Doc Director: Matt Palmer Cast: Jack Lowden, Martin McCann, Tony Curran The Devil's Doorway (IFC) In the fall of 1960, Father Thomas Riley and Father John Thornton were sent by the Vatican to investigate a miraculous event in an Irish home for 'fallen women', only to uncover something much more horrific. THE DEVIL'S DOORWAY opens in select theaters and on all VOD platforms Friday, July 13, 2018, from IFC Midnight. "I should expect that IFC Midnight is always going to put out quality work and they really did this time. … I’ve never seen a found footage film that I have enjoyed the way I enjoyed this one." - Vanessa "I had some serious jumpscares, and they weren’t the cat-jumps-out kind of jumpscares, they were scared-the-crap-out-of-me jumpscares and some really good hair-raising kinds of things." - Jeff "What’s really impressive about it is the character and the attention to the characters which I think is part of the (direction). It’s handled much differently than other found footage films." - Doc Director: Aislinn Clarke Cast: Lalor Roddy, Ciaran Flynn, Helena Bereen

In a special episode, Spocklight presents an in-depth interview with the man behind bringing Star Trek: The Next Generation’ and ‘Enterprise’ to Blu-Ray, Roger Lay Jr. Hear how Roger went from Trek fan to Trek creator, pursuing a desire to bring back the ambitious, multi-part documentary format to home video resulting in 'The Genesis Effect: Engineering the Wrath of Khan', 'Star Trek: The Journey to the Silver Screen', 'The Roddenberry Vault' and many more. We also talk his beginnings at USC and how interning on hit sitcom, ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ led to him producing his first documentary at 21 years of age chronicling Ray Romano’s return to the stand up circuit for HBO. January and the end of December were a touch crazy for new TV so Michael and Max have abandoned their normal format for this episode and are just trying to get through as much of the things they've been watching as they possibly can. The episode is spoiler-free (beyond the fact we may talk about events central to the premise of the show or that happen in the first episode) so no worries on that front. If you're looking for a new thing to try out or to catch up on some hidden gems from last year then this is probably a good place to start! 00:00 - Intro 03:45 - American Vandal (Netflix) 10:13 - Babylon Berlin (Sky/Now TV (UK), Netflix (US)) 14:19 - Hard Sun (BBC/iPlayer (UK), Hulu (US)) 20:35 - Dark (Netflix) 25:14 - Derry Girls (Channel 4/All 4 (UK)) 28:57 - McMafia (BBC/iPlayer (UK), AMC (US)) 35:40 - Kiri (Channel 4/All 4 (UK)) 38:43 - Black Mirror Season 4 (Netflix) 46:26 - Inside No. 9 (Season 4 iPlayer Season 1-2 Netflix (UK), Netflix (US)) 51:04 - League of Gentlemen (Season 4 iPlayer Season 1-3 Netflix (UK), Netflix (US)) 54:04 - Where can you watch all this stuff?
