Unclear and Present Danger

On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John marked the unfortunate death of Rob Reiner by watching his 1992 military legal thriller A Few Good Men. In their conversation, they discuss Reiner's career, the underlying liberalism of a film like A Few Good Men, and the continued relevance of Jack Nicholson's performance as Colonel Nathan Jessup. After this, we'll be off for a few weeks, but then we'll see you again in the new year with an episode on Murder at 1600. We'll then finish out 1997 with an episode on G.I. Jane. It's been a busy and chaotic 2025 for both Jamelle and John, but they both hope the schedule will return to some regularity for 2026.And do not forget the Patreon, where in addition to a twice-monthly show on the political and military thrillers of the Cold War, we do a weekly politics show. Our next Patreon movie episode will be on the 1984 adaptation of John Le Carre's The Little Drummer Girl, starring the late, great Diane Keaton.

This film chronicles Queen's meteoric rise from underground innovators to global superstars and follows the transformative journey of their charismatic frontman, Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek delivers an Oscar-winning performance as Freddie Mercury (celebrated for his riveting turns in Mr. Robot and The Little Drummer Girl), capturing the raw energy and magnetic presence of the iconic singer. Jazz Appreciation Month 2025: Finding My Own Way to Jazz Musicianship

It's April 2025 ... and that means it's national Jazz Appreciation Month here in the U.S.! Join host CH as she shares her own journey to not only coming to love the genre - particularly the classics and standards of the 1930s and 40s - but also how it has shaped her sense of musicianship when she resumed playing drums after a 10 year hiatus. She reflects on how the sounds of jazz surrounded her at a young age (even if she wasn't suuuuper interested at the time), and how her original love of playing pop/rock music evolved as her own musical leanings changed over time. She also reminds us of the importance of embracing music - no matter the genre - at any stage of life for the personal enrichment and inspiration it brings to us all.   Show Notes Jazz Appreciation Month (known as "JAM") runs from April 1 - April 30 in the U.S. It culminates with the international celebration of International Day of Jazz on April 30th. For those looking for more information and events that are scheduled for 2025, head over to the National Museum of American History, which founded JAM in 2001 (and of which is where CH pulled the quote that ended our episode). Additionally, CH highly recommends the Ken Burns PBS documentary film, "Jazz", for those looking for a comprehensive examination and tribute to jazz from its earliest origins up to present day. Some of the artists CH mentioned that played in her grandparent's house as she was growing up: Duke Ellington; Billie Holliday; Ella Fitzgerald; Glenn Miller; Benny Goodman; Frank Sinatra; Dean Martin; Nat King Cole. Additionally, her step-father was a fan of Brazilian jazz. The Los Angeles radio station CH also grew up listening to was 94.7 The Wave (now known as The Soul of Southern California). WARREN CUMMINGS joins me to talk about the TV adaptations of the work of JOHN LE CARRÉ First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on December 8th 2024. For various reasons, recently I've been watching rather a lot of adaptations of the work of the novelist John le Carré, or David Cornwell as his family knew him, mostly, perhaps, because I've started reading his books, partially, of course, because SANDY made reference to him our show about ROCK FOLLIES earlier in the year, and also maybe because several of the adaptations have been made more widely available on the BBC's iPlayer service. Anyway, whatever the mysterious dark truth of those reasons might turn out to be, I've recently watched THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL; THE NIGHT MANAGER; TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY; SMILEY'S PEOPLE and also the film of his 1960s classic THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, and, at time of recording, I'm also about to give A PERFECT SPY a rewatch after several decades. Le Carré's world of spies, counter-spies, mistrust, intrigue, and intense Cold War hostilities entertained us for several decades, and mostly centred around the enigmatic character of GEORGE SMILEY, as perfectly personified in two of the television adaptations of the late 1970s and early 1980s by SIR ALEC GUINNESS, and it is mostly upon those two series, TINKER, TAILOR and SMILEY'S PEOPLE that my conversation with WARREN CUMMINGS over the course of the next slow-burning but hopefully intensely engaging hour will concentrate, but, as long as neither of us turns out to be the Mole, then maybe we'll return to talk about a few of the others on another occasion. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Golden Voice Adjoa Andoh's remarkable skills of characterization and pacing are on full display in this reissue of le Carré's novel of espionage and manipulation in the Middle East. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Robin Whitten discuss this story of a naïve English actress, Charlie, who agrees to work undercover for an Israeli spy to identify a Palestinian terrorist, and is co-opted by morally ambiguous people. Andoh gives Charlie a light, sweet voice and an unsophisticated tone that emphasize her bravado and innocence. From slow-burn psychological seductions to rapid-fire arguments, she makes the complex multilayered story accessible and provocative throughout. Read our review of the audiobook at our website. The Pink Smoke welcomes back fan favorite John Arminio for a companion episode to our epic 100 Years of Spy Movies two-parter from last year to discuss the 2018 mini-series The Little Drummer Girl, starring Florence Pugh and Michael Shannon, directed by Park Chan-wook. Adapted from the 1983 novel by John le Carré, it is like most of the famed author's work a taut and intricate web of postwar intrigue and espionage. Set in 1979, it follows the recruitment of an English actress by a seasoned Mossad spymaster to infiltrate a Palestinian bomb-maker's network in order to prevent a potential terrorist attack on London. John himself has recruited his father, Captain Tom Arminio USN Retired, to join host John Cribbs in crossing into the treacherous world of le Carré where morality, identity and personal values are routinely compromised. They discuss the relevance of this 40-year-old story, the culpability of those who choose not to take sides in international conflicts, and the fate of characters who suffer moral injury: having perpetrated, failed to prevent, or witnessed events that contradict deeply held moral beliefs. They also make fun of Diane Keaton's haircut from the little-loved 1984 film adaptation. link to the War Peace and Justice Project https://www.warpeacejustice.org/ Support our Patreon: www.patreon.com/thepinksmoke The Pink Smoke site: www.thepinksmoke.com The Pink Smoke on X: twitter.com/thepinksmoke Intro music: Unleash the Bastards / “Tea for Two” Outro music: Marcus Pinn / “Vegas"

We wind up talking about why the film doesn't work and about le Carré's ambiguous approach to spy fiction, in particular, how his perspective differs from other British chroniclers of Cold War espionage, like Ian Flemming and Graham Greene. In what ways does le Carré's approach represent an essentially (small-c) conservative disposition? And why is it so attractive to all of us? Florence Pugh was Oscar and BAFTA nominated for her role as Amy March in the adaptation of Little Women. She has won huge acclaim for films including Midsommer, Lady Macbeth, and the Marvel adventure Black Widow. She also played the lead in the television adaptation of John Le Carré's The Little Drummer Girl. More recently she's been on the big screen in Don't Worry Darling, and 18th century Irish drama The Wonder. Florence tells John Wilson how her performing ambitions during a primary school nativity show in which she played Mary with a northern accent, borrowed from her Grimsby-born grandparents. She chooses, as one of her most significant creative inspirations, a woman called Linda Mace who made costumes for all the school productions, and whose store room full of period clothes fuelled Florence's imaginations. She recalls her breakthrough role in The Falling, about a fainting phenomenon at an English girls' school in the late 1960s, and how she was inspired by the film's director Carol Morley. She also pays tribute to casting director Shaheen Baig who helped her secure roles in subsequent films including Lady Macbeth, and remembers working alongside Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson when she played Cordelia in a television version of King Lear. Florence Pugh chooses the song She's Only Happy In the Sun by the American singer songwriter Ben Harper as source of inspiration, and reflects on her own musical ambitions which started as a teenage singer-songwriter posting videos on YouTube under the name Flossie Rose. She also discusses the pressures of fame, gossip columns and why she's learned to stop searching for references to herself in social media. Producer: Edwina Pitman

On today's 23rd episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm happy to introduce you to https://DavidMcCloskeyBooks.com (David McCloskey), author of Damascus Station. I feel confident saying you'll enjoy getting to know him as much as I have. And to be frank, I think this guy will be one of those authors you'll read for years to come. In fact, if you enjoy John Le Carre, you'll really enjoy his latest page-turning thriller.  I read it, and personally feel it has it all; intrigue, murder, espionage, and even romance. Yes; David has a hit on his hands, as you'll hear inside the show. A nice bonus, especially meeting someone who is relatively new on the scene, is how excited and humble he appears; especially given the depth of this thriller.  On today's show we cover a wide gamut of topics: the CIA, his work following "bad guys," his reporting to the White House with daily briefs, as well as his love of Texas (where he and his family live), his admiration of Peter The Great (be sure to catch the rapid fire questions near the end), and his passion for Italian food (I mean, who doesn't love that?). We even refer to my new friend and a man David wants to read and get to know, Fred Burton (author of Beirut Rules), as well as hear his taste in books (Little Drummer Girl by John Le Carre), his respect of music (Jack Antonoff/Bleachers), and of course, his love for and the craft of writing. There's so much to take away from this episode, so get comfortable folks because it's time to get into The Thriller Zone.
