We review Jin-Roh director Hiroyuki Okiura's second animated film, A Letter to Momo, about a young girl that forms an unlikely friendship with a trio of troublesome yokai who through a series of comical misadventures help her to cope with the loss of her father. Released in 2011 after seven years in production, and to seemingly little fanfare on this side of the Pacific, this underrated family film, equal parts charming, comic, and heartfelt, deserves another look. Tune in for the full review!

On this episode, Cat and Joe discuss and review the 1999 political drama (some say thriller, they disagree) Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. The film focusses on an operative of a special unit in an alternate Post-WWII Japan occupied by Germany, and his PTSD after watching the suicide bombing of one of the young girls they call ‘Little Red Riding Hoods' who are part of a guerrilla terrorist group. The film begs the question - once a wolf, are you always a wolf? Can you leave the pack? And so many other wolf metaphors. Available to rent or stream (for a price) on Amazon Prime. This episode is also available as a video podcast on The Anime Movie Podcast YouTube channel.

Max, Dan and Scott return to review and discuss Jin-Roh The Wolf Brigade. Synopsis according to Google "The movie "Jin-Roh" is about those in society who are predators among prey. But these "beasts" never bother to change their shape; like Red Riding Hood's wolf, they merely drape themselves with human clothes that do not even disguise the eyes, teeth and claws of a killer. This is a movie that is certainly worth a couple watches simply because of everything that you miss the first time that you watch. The second time is much better. In the final installment of Catching Up On Cinema's second annual Anime August event month, Kyle and Trevor take a look at Hiroyuki Okiura's Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (1999)! Based on a sprawling multimedia franchise created by Mamoru Oshii, the film is a melancholy tale of lost souls trying to eke out a living under a brutal fascist regime in 1950's Tokyo. More of a "look and feel" experience than a straightforward narrative or character study, the film is nevertheless a technical wonder, boasting exceedingly detailed background paintings and astonishing rendered mechanical designs.

Recently, the three of us were asked by ban__hus to take part in his grimdarkfilmclub project, where people select a film, book, record, and artwork that has inspired them. Our selections are up on the grimdarkfilmclub Instagram account, but we wanted to use this episode to talk more about them and why they are important to us. Many of them speak to our interest in realism, which is reflected in our hobby projects where we modify the scale of miniatures to reduce heroic scale. We talk about the following films: Jin-Roh - the Wolf Brigade, Unforgiven, and Blue Ruin. We talk about the following books: Roadside Picnic, The Shadow of the Torturer (The Book of the New Sun), and the Crystal World. We talk about the following albums: Liar - The Jesus Lizard, Bivouac - Jawbreaker, and Songs about Fucking - Big Black. Finally, we talk about the artists: Yoji Shinkawa, Alberto Giacometti, and Joe Keinberger.Follow grimdarkfilmclub!Follow ban__hus!Follow Joe Keinberger!

19 years after the sleeper Japanese hit, Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade, South Korean filmmakers decided to retool the anime into a live action film. If you live in the US, this is a 'Netflix Original Film' fully equipped with multiple language and subtitle options (but I say the original Korean is optimal). What is most shocking is the fact this property was remade. No one was asking for it and Jin-Roh doesn't have the international footprint like Ghost in the Shell or Akira. So is this remake a smart improvement on the original or just a pale imitation? Join Corbin and Allen as they review Illang: The Wolf Brigade to find out! Join the discussion-Comment below! Hot off the success of Ghost in the Shell, famed anime creator Mamoru Oshii returned as writer to finish his trilogy based on his Kerberos Panzer Cop manga. Instead of opting for a third live action installment, he chose breathtaking, realistic animation. Drawing from European folktales and Shakespearean plays, Oshii presents a stark alternate history of WWII Japan where civil war plays out amidst a star-crossed, fateful love story. Unlike Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball Z or Akira, not many remember this "lost anime film." 21 years after its release, it has landed on a number of free and premium streaming platforms causing it to gain a new audience. Should this anime stay lost or have we uncovered a forgotten gem? Join Corbin and Allen as they review Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade to find out! Join the discussion-Comment below!
