Nowe pokolenie artystów mogło dzięki temu eksperymentować z językiem filmowym, przepracowując jednocześnie traumy dorastania w zmiennych i niespokojnych latach 80. i 90.

This episode is about the terrifying Korean ghost story by Kim Jee-woon, A Tale of Two Sisters. From Wikipedia: "The film is inspired by a Joseon Dynasty era folktale entitled Janghwa Hongryeon jeon, which has been adapted to film several times. The plot focuses on a recently released patient from a mental institution who returns home with her sister, only to face disturbing events between her stepmother and the ghosts haunting their house—all of which are connected to a dark past in the family's history." But first! Josh receives a care package for his sickness. Drusilla goes to the super horny Renaissance Pleasure Faire. They discuss Our Flag Means Death, The Northman by Robert Eggers. Drusilla doesn't like Conan the Barbarian, which is insane. The past is TOO MUDDY!!! Does Jabberwocky suck? Josh watched the Blu-ray of LA Plays Itself: The Fred Halsted Collection and WOW. We love Altered Innocence and Anus Films. Josh watches Withnail and I and How to Get Ahead in Advertising. Drusilla sees the Nicholas Cage movie, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Josh crushes on Pedro Pascal. Dru watched The Crimson Pirate. Everyone in old Hollywood was queer and maybe Burt Lancaster was closeted trans? Jayne Mansfield and Anton Lavey were homies and it's Beltane. Then they get into the feature. This is the most successful Korean horror film and the first Korean film to be released broadly in American theaters. Of course, Dru did the artwork for Arrow's release of this film. Josh and Dru compare this to the work of David Lynch and describe a horrifying moment. Black Christmas comes up. The duo gets into wallpaper, ghost stories, Lake Mungo and The Haunting of Hill House both reference this movie. Neither host cares for 90s horror movies from America, but the movies from abroad ripped. Steven Soderbergh comes up. Then the duo plays Have They Seen It? before announcing the next film. Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.comDrusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel/

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are on the hunt for a mysterious hidden treasure and shooting at loads of people along the way with the 2008 film from Kim Jee-woon, The Good, the Bad, the Weird. Perhaps this film won't be anything that breaks any new storytelling ground—it is a new version of the classic The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly by Sergio Leone. Given the history of spaghetti westerns liberally borrowing from other films, that one was also probably a retread of other things, too. There's nothing original anymore; all the stories have been told. What matters now is telling familiar stories in fresh ways. Friend, this one tells a familiar story in the freshest way imaginable. It's a rollicking buddy-chase-shootout-caper western and that's a fantastic combination of genres. Stick all those ingredients together and you've got a hell of a crazy stew going. What's great about this one is its ability to surprise. You may be familiar with this story, but it's still not going to be what you expect. There's plenty of heavy emotion and blistering action. It's a truly stellar film from South Korea. Cały świat ogląda "Squid Game"? Już nie. Świat popkultury mknie szybko do przodu i pierwsze miejsce w rankingach Netflixa zajął już inny koreański serial, sygnowany znamienitym reżyserskim nazwiskiem.

“IF YOU CHASE SOMETHING TO GET SOMETHING, SOMETHING WILL COME CHASING YOU.“Today, on the first foreign film we have covered on the podcast, we take a look at 2008’s action-comedy or “kimchi western“ as the director describes it, “The Good the Bad the Weird“ directed by South Korean auteur, Kim Jee-woon. If you aren’t familiar with Kim Jee-woon, this might be the best place to start! On this episode we discuss what the cinema landscape looked like in South Korea in 2008, and how they protect their cinema from the big Hollywood studios from dominating their domestic box office. We also talk about how this director directs his action films compared to Hollywood action films, even including Kim’s Hollywood action film: The Last Stand, with Arnold Schwarzenegger. This film is not only fun and hilarious, but also takes place in a very interesting setting. When we think “westerns“ we think of the American West in the 19th century. So what does that look like from a Korean persepctive? How do the desert imagery, colonial themes, bandits and gunslingers translate into 1930’s Manchuria? Does this film also borrow from Italian westerns, aside from the obvious play on words title borrowing from Sergio Leone’s The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly? Although this film was generally reviewed well, we talk about how fair the consensus’ phrasing “style over substance“ applies to this film, as well as some of the implicit racism in the reviews (even from the ones that LIKE the movie!)We also discuss one of the biggest lies in the film industry: “no Animals were harmed during the making of this film.“ when doing a bit of research on some of the “horse stunts“ in this film. If you haven’t seen this movie, you can do so on Hulu, Amazon Prime, iTunes and more. We encourage you to watch this film if you care about spoilers, because we talk about the ending, and how the easily available “International Cut“ varies from the original “Korean Cut.” Hope you enjoy the episode, see you in two weeks for Hook! Also, we have merch!
