Today, we're diving into the high-octane world of The Shadow Strays, a 2024 Indonesian action crime thriller that has taken the streaming giant Netflix by storm. Directed by the acclaimed Timo Tjahjanto, this film not only showcases exhilarating action sequences but also delves into deep emotional territories with its compelling characters and plot. The Shadow Strays introduces us to Codename 13, brilliantly portrayed by Aurora Ribero. She is a 17-year-old assassin, known as a Shadow, within an international organization. The film kicks off with a botched mission in Japan that leads to her suspension and forces her back to Jakarta for a psychological retraining. However, the narrative quickly unfolds into a complex web of crime, betrayal, and personal redemption as she meets a young boy, Monji, setting off a chain of events that pulls her back into the violent underbelly of Jakarta.Suspended and haunted by her past, 13 finds herself in Jakarta, next door to Monji and his mother, who are entangled with a human trafficker. After a series of violent incidents, Monji's mother dies, and Monji vows revenge, pulling 13 back into a life she tried to leave behind. As 13 navigates her way through a network of crime syndicates and corrupt officials, the plot twists through scenes of intense action and strategic warfare, leading to a climax that challenges her beliefs and forces her to confront her darkest fears. The Shadow Strays explores themes of identity and moral ambiguity. 13's journey is a tumultuous exploration of her past and a quest for redemption that questions the black-and-white morality often associated with her line of work. The film poses significant questions about family, loyalty, and the cost of freedom in a world riddled with corruption. For those who appreciate nuanced action films and are fans of international cinema, The Shadow Strays is a must-watch. It successfully combines action, emotional depth, and a rich narrative to create a film that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.So, tune in as we dissect The Shadow Strays, appreciating its craft and unraveling its complex layers. Whether you're drawn to its thrilling action sequences or its deep dive into the psyche of its characters, there's plenty to explore and discuss in this standout Indonesian thriller.

Happy Noirvember! On the thirty- first episode of ATFT, movie critic Matthieu Côté joins me in analyzing Jean- Pierre Melville's 1967 neo- noir classic, Le Samouraï! This episode is spoiler- filled.  Le Samouraï is regarded as one of the most influential films of all time, inspiring a plethora of films including Taxi Driver (1976), Drive (2011), and The Killer (2023). The film follows highly- skilled hit- man Jef Costello, played by Alain Delon, as he simultaneously carries out a job and his alibi but his careful plans soon go awry. The audience then watches Jef as he maneuvers his way around the police and the criminals who hired him. Le Samouraï, like Easy Rider, is a show- don't- tell film, meaning the more you watch it, the more you gain. We watch the characters and story unfold without there being too much dialogue. Films like these are the most rewarding to analyze and, when done right, become lauded as masterpieces. Le Samouraï cemented Alain Delon as massive star in cinema and many regard this film as his best.  Matthieu is a Canadian movie critic who writes for Horror Quebéc. He has interviewed several prominent directors with the most prominent thus- far being Ari Aster. Most recently, he interviewed director Timo Tjahjanto ahead of his new film The Shadow Strays. Watch his interview here!: https://youtu.be/-qDsUozgrFg?si=ITMrxcNEhYfTzGH5. Matthieu also has his own YouTube channel where he analyzes and reviews both films and television shows old and new. His analyses are truly excellent, I highly recommend subscribing to his channel… here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/@matthieucote2272/videos.   This is Matthieu's first appearance on ATFT! Funny enough, we got connected through the comments of his YouTube video, “The Eyes Of Past Lives” about a year ago! His video greatly helped me prepare for last year's episode on the film Past Lives so I left a comment telling him how brilliant his analysis was and that I gave him and his video a shout out in that episode. He responded very graciously and said he would love to come on the show sometime. I always kept this in mind so, when I switched the film being discussed for Noirvember this year, I thought I'd ask Matthieu if he was interested and within 24 hours, we scheduled a time to record this episode! This episode was recorded on October 17, 2024.  In this episode, Matthieu and I analyze Le Samouraï while also pay tribute to one of cinema's greats, Alain Delon, who passed away this past August. Matthieu talks about his long- time appreciation for this film, even considering it among his very favorite films of all time. We discuss various aspects of the film including how Le Samouraï compares to American noir films of the 1940s as well as recent films that were inspired by this film, the power and emotion only Alain Delon can give through his eyes alone, and Jef's accomplice: his pet bird. Ce qui est bien, c'est que chaque liste correspond vraiment à chaque membre !THOMAS « EL COMANDANTE »Speed racer (The Wachowskis – 2008)Mad Max : Fury road (George Miller – 2015)Dernier Maquis / Les Chants de Mandrin (Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche – 2008 / 2011)The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans / Au cœur des volcans (Werner Herzog – 2009 / 2023)Balada Triste de Trompeta (Alex de la Iglesia – 2010)The Counselor (Ridley Scott – 2013)Cameraperson (Kirsten Johnson – 2019)Mektoub my love : Canto Uno (Abdellatif Kechiche – 2017)Small Axe – Lovers Rock (Steve McQueen – 2021)Transformers 2 : Revenge of the Fallen / 13 Hours : The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (Michael Bay – 2009 / 2016)GI Joe : Rise of Cobra (Stephen Sommers – 2009)Hypernormalisation (Adam Curtis – 2015)La Loi de la Jungle (Antonin Peretjatko – 2016)Lincoln (Spielberg – 2012)Boyhood / Everybody Wants Some !! Vi pratar också om: Red Screening, The Last Matinee, Cassandra Khaw, Nothing but Blackened Teeth, V Castro, Goddess of Filth, Mestiza Blood, Spår, Creepypodden, Ramsey Campbell, The Parasite, Mats Strandberg, Konferensen, Grady Hendrix, The Final Girl Support Group, Richard Chizmar, Chasing the Boogeyman, Stephen Graham Jones, My Heart Is a Chainsaw, John Ajvide Lindqvist, Vänligheten, Karin och Abel, Johannes Pinter, Karmakoma, Fredrik P Winter, Olycksfåglar, Vikarien, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Candyman, The Night House, David Buckner, The Ritual, Hellraiser, The Power, Corinna Faith, Sara Bergmark Elfgren, Grim, Grävlingen, Things Heard & Seen, All Things Cease to Appear, Elizabeth Brundage, Emanuel Swedenborg, Skräcken på Wakenhyrst, Scream, There's Someone Inside Your House, Patick Brice, Creep, Wes Craven, V/H/S 94, Timo Tjahjanto, Macabre, May the Devil Take You, Halloween Kills, David Gordon Green, Danny McBride, Vicious Fun, Horror in the High Desert, Lamb, Noomi Rapace, Wrong Turn, Censor, Squid Game, Don Coscarelli, Psycho Goreman, Steven Kostanski, The Void, The Advent Calender, Antlers, Scott Cooper, Crazyheart, Out of the Furnace, Black Mass, The Vigil, Midnight in Paris, Last Night in Soho, Edgar Wright, Shaun of the Dead, Legatum: arvet, Johan Sehlstedt, Quentin Tarantino, I död och lust, The Trip, I onde dager, Tommy Wirkola, Död snö, Old, M. Night. Shyamalan, Gustaf Hammarsten, No One Gets Out Alive, Adam Neville, His House, The Feast, Anders Fager, Ingemar Fredmans epistlar, Caveat, Possum, Malignant, Black Mirror, Come True, Hellbound, The Silent Sea, Mike Flanagan, Midnight Mass, Salems Lot, Tre kronor, The sacrament, Brand New Cherry Flavour, Catherine Keener, Get Out, Willys Wonderland, Nicholas Cage, Titane, Julia Ducournau, Raw, A Quiet Place II, Sator, Blood Red Sky, Fried Barry, In the Earth, Ben Wheatley, Killist, A Field in England, For the Sake of Vicious, Don´t Breathe 2, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Surge, Ben Whishaw, Slaxx, Fear Street, Saint Maud och självklart lite om Skräckkokboken, men inte nödvändigtvis i den ordningen. Icke-Patreon-lyssnare missar hälften, men det är billigt att inte göra sig den olyckan. Nostalgi, löst tyckande och akademisk analys.

After a long hiatus, the V/H/S franchise of films is back with a new installment.  Some say it is a reboot while others say it is a sequel, but either way, as an anthology film, with stories not necessarily related, it doesn't matter all that much.  The new film had some of its talent taken away as they went off and were hired to direct the new Hellraiser film and the new Scream film, but others are back including Simon Barrett and Timo Tjahjanto. The new movie entitled V/H/S/94 has four new stories and some new talent too.  First is the wrap around story entitled Holy Hell (written and directed by Jennifer Reeder) about a swat team that enters what appears to be a building owned by a suicide cult.  Next up is Storm Drain (written and directed by Chloe Okuno).  The next tale is by Simon Barrett entitled The Empty Wake.  Following is Timo Tjahjanto's story entitled The Subject, and the last story is called Terror (written and directed by Ryan Prows). The film has been getting excellent reviews from critics and has a huge fan base that was excited to hear of the latest in the franchise.  The movie appears on Shudder right now for all subscribers.  Dark Discussions Podcast takes a look at this new movie and gives their thoughts on each part of the anthology.
