"The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Corinthians 2:14 In a world filled with external pressures and societal expectations, losing sight of our core values and authenticity can be easy. But remember, staying true to yourself is a powerful act of courage and strength. Proverbs 19:21 reminds us that Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails. Trust in God's plan for you and remain steadfast in your convictions. When faced with difficult decisions, seek guidance from within and listen to the voice of your conscience. Proverbs 3:5- 6 advises us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding; in all our ways, submit to him, and he will make our paths straight. Let faith be your compass as you navigate through life's challenges. Matthew 13:22 says, "The seed sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful." It is essential to strike a balance between honoring external influences and upholding your individual values. Remember the words of Romans 12:2, Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Find solace in prayer and meditation as you stay rooted in who you truly are. Influence may sway like shifting sands, but authenticity stands firm as an unwavering rock. Embrace your uniqueness and let your light shine brightly for all to see. Make decisions that align with your inner truth, for it is through authenticity that you will find true peace and fulfillment. Amen. Exodus 23:2 says, "Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment." Amen. Prayer for the Day! We start with polymath Kenneth Joseph Arrow, a key figure in many economic insights. From him we move to a key Chicago school figure and funnyman, George Joseph Stigler. Finally, we star the French economist Gérard Debreu. In season 1 (Danish) we reviewed the history of economic thought before WWII. The coming seasons are dedicated to the Nobel Prize in Economics, and I am joined by economist Otto Brøns-Petersen. The Nobel prize is a good benchmark for how the field and profession of economics developed after WWII. We will focus both on the scientific contributions and on the people behind them. Russian President spoke at the annual meeting of the Moscow-based Valdai Discussion Club. The four-day gathering, held in the Russian resort city of Sochi, focused on the theme, "Global Shake-Up in the 21st Century: The Individual, Values, and the State." In his remarks, Mr. Putin talked about challenges common to nations worldwide — including the coronavirus pandemic, social discontent, and ethical considerations related to new technologies. He also spoke about the "re-alignment of the balance of power" between nations and the challenges of fostering a "stable world order." Mr. Putin emphasized the "importance of a solid support [from national governments] in the sphere of morals, ethics, and values." He criticized so-called woke progressives in the United States and Europe, saying their "fight for equality and against discrimination has turned into aggressive dogmatism bordering on absurdity." He derided "cancel culture" and the "demand to give up the traditional notions of mother, father, family and even gender." Vladimir Putin delivered his remarks in Russian. In her book Dare to Lead, Brene Brown defines values as “a way of being or believing, that we hold most important.” She goes on to state that you have to know what values guide your life. Coach Mary Ann Hill could not agree more. She feels values are the foundation for truly knowing yourself and how you want to live your life. She believes that when we don't live by our values then we are living a life without direction.   There are a lot of ways that living a life without direction can play out, but the one Mary Ann focuses on is the guilt so many mothers feel in their motherhood. When you are living by someone else's values and trying to check off a list of “shoulds” it rarely leads to feeling happy and fulfilled, no matter what role you are performing. Mary Ann teaches her clients how to live by their values and thus show up in their motherhood the way they choose and on their terms. In 12, we discuss what's kept us from making a new episode for a while now (hint-hint: it has to do with the political universe ascending on GA recently ;) ), some enlightening information we've learned from newly discovered thinker Dr. Gabor Mate, as well as how Fromm discusses ways we can shift as a society from operating primarily out of the having mode of existence to operating out of the being mode of existence. The key, he says, is an shift in individual values. His recipe for change mirrors the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, and says change is possible if the following conditions exist  1. We are suffering and we are aware that we are 2. We recognize the origin of our ill being. 3. We recognize that there is a way of overcoming our ill-being. 4. We accept that in order to overcome our ill-being we must follow certain norms for living and change our present practice of life. These four ideas are present in Marxian and Freudian thought, and also are reflected in the process used for psychotherapy and to improve individual's mental and emotional health. Fromm also lists values he believes we need to shift to on an individual level at the end of the chapter - a few of those are 1. Willingness to give up all forms of having (minus existential having), in order to fully be. 2. Being fully present where one is.  3. Joy that comes from giving and sharing versus the pleasure that comes from hoarding and exploiting 4. Love and respect for life in all its manifestations - life and everything that pertains to growth are sacred. 5. Reducing greed, hate and illusions. 6. In his seminal Social Choice and Individual Values, Kenneth Arrow stated that his theory applies to voting. Many voting theorists have been convinced that, on account of Arrow’s theorem, all voting methods must be seriously flawed. Arrow’s theory is strictly ordinal, the cardinal aggregation of preferences being explicitly rejected. In this paper I point out that all voting methods are cardinal and therefore outside the reach of Arrow’s result. Parallel to Arrow’s ordinal approach, there evolved a consistent cardinal theory of collective choice. This theory, most prominently associated with the work of Harsanyi, continued the older utilitarian tradition in a more formal style. The purpose of this paper is to show that various derivations of utilitarian SWFs can also be used to derive utilitarian voting (UV). By this I mean a voting rule that allows the voter to score each alternative in accordance with a given scale. UV-k indicates a scale with k distinct values. The general theory leaves k to be determined on pragmatic grounds. A (1,0) scale gives approval voting. I prefer the scale (1,0,-1) and refer to the resulting voting rule as evaluative voting. A conclusion of the paper is that the defects of conventional voting methods result not from Arrow’s theorem, but rather from restrictions imposed on voters’ expression of their preferences. The analysis is extended to strategic voting, utilizing a novel set of assumptions regarding voter behavior.
