Author and columnist David Harsanyi joins The Daily Signal to discuss his book "The Rise of BlueAnon: How the Democrats Became the Party of Conspiracy Theorists." In this thought-provoking conversation with Rob Bluey, Harsanyi explains why Democrats have embraced conspiracy theories, analyzes the collapse of institutional trust in America, and shares his perspective on faith's crucial role in our society. Harsanyi argues that Democrats resort to conspiracy theories to avoid substantive debate, with the Russia collusion narrative being "the most effective conspiracy theory perhaps in political history." He discusses the modern media landscape, why Americans have lost trust in legacy institutions, and offers candid insights about the dangers of government replacing the role of faith and private charity in American life. The conversation also touches on Trump's administration, DOGE, college campus protests, and Harsanyi's new Substack newsletter where he continues to provide analysis beyond his regular columns: https://davidharsanyi.substack.com/ Subscribe to The Daily Signal for more interviews with thought leaders on the critical issues facing America. This episode is presented by Carolina Readiness Supply – A narrative is being promulgated online that Israel created Hamas, and so it bears the blame for Hamas' attack a week ago. But senior editor at The Federalist, David Harsanyi, writes:  Israel, instead, was largely indifferent to Hamas — one of many theocratic groups appearing at the time. When created, Hamas was best known for building medical centers and offering welfare services. Most of Hamas' funding came from foreign sources. Jordan, probably the group's biggest patron in the subsequent years, saw Hamas as a way to influence the politics of the “West Bank.” And Israel also largely looked the other way, hoping to create a political counterbalance to the terrorist PLO. (Israel's only known direct funding to the group came, according to U.S. intelligence officials, to fund agents who were spying on the organization.) Wouldn't any civilized country prefer a religious organization providing social services in power than one engaged in hijackings, suicide bombings, and knife attacks on civilians? Hamas, in the 1970s and early '80s, was not violent. As soon as the group began to participate in attacks, as they did around the first Intifada, Israel began cracking down on the organization and assassinating its terror leaders. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: What counts as defection?, published by Alex Turner on the AI Alignment Forum. Thanks to Michael Dennis for proposing the formal definition; to Andrew Critch for pointing me in this direction; to Abram Demski for proposing non-negative weighting; and to Alex Appel, Scott Emmons, Evan Hubinger, philh, Rohin Shah, and Carroll Wainwright for their feedback and ideas. There's a good chance I'd like to publish this at some point as part of a larger work. However, I wanted to make the work available now, in case that doesn't happen soon. They can't prove the conspiracy... But they could, if Steve runs his mouth. The police chief stares at you. You stare at the table. You'd agreed (sworn!) to stay quiet. You'd even studied game theory together. But, you hadn't understood what an extra year of jail meant. The police chief stares at you. Let Steve be the gullible idealist. You have a family waiting for you. Sunlight stretches across the valley, dappling the grass and warming your bow. Your hand anxiously runs along the bowstring. A distant figure darts between trees, and your stomach rumbles. The day is near spent. The stags run strong and free in this land. Carla should meet you there. Shouldn't she? Who wants to live like a beggar, subsisting on scraps of lean rabbit meat? In your mind's eye, you reach the stags, alone. You find one, and your arrow pierces its barrow. The beast shoots away; the rest of the herd follows. You slump against the tree, exhausted, and never open your eyes again. You can't risk it. People talk about 'defection' in social dilemma games, from the prisoner's dilemma to stag hunt to chicken. In the tragedy of the commons, we talk about defection. The concept has become a regular part of LessWrong discourse. Informal definition. A player defects when they increase their personal payoff at the expense of the group. This informal definition is no secret, being echoed from the ancient Formal Models of Dilemmas in Social Decision-Making to the recent Classifying games like the Prisoner's Dilemma: you can model the "defect" action as "take some value for yourself, but destroy value in the process". Given that the prisoner's dilemma is the bread and butter of game theory and of many parts of economics, evolutionary biology, and psychology, you might think that someone had already formalized this. However, to my knowledge, no one has. Formalism Consider a finite n -player normal-form game, with player i having pure action set A i and payoff function P i A 1 × × A n → R . Each player i chooses a strategy s i ∈ Δ A i (a distribution over A i ). Together, the strategies form a strategy profile s s 1 s n s − i s 1 s i − 1 s i 1 s n is the strategy profile, excluding player i 's strategy. A payoff profile contains the payoffs for all players under a given strategy profile. A utility weighting α j j 1 n is a set of n non-negative weights (as in Harsanyi's utilitarian theorem). You can consider the weights as quantifying each player's contribution; they might represent a percieved social agreement or be the explicit result of a bargaining process. When all α j are equal, we'll call that an equal weighting. However, if there are "utility monsters", we can downweight them accordingly. We're implicitly assuming that payoffs are comparable across players. We want to investigate: given a utility weighting, which actions are defections? Definition. Player i 's action a ∈ A i is a defection against strategy profile s and weighting α j j 1 n if Personal gain: P i a s − i P i s i s − i Social loss: ∑ j α j P j a s − i ∑ j α j P j s i s − i If such an action exists for some player i , strategy profile s , and weighting, then we say that there is an opportunity for defection in the game. Remark. For an equal weighting, condition (2) is equivalent to demanding that the action n...

On this episode, I talk to David Harsanyi of National Review about the many recent developments in David Chipman's nomination to lead the ATF. A firestorm has decended on D.C. and The Reload's reporting on Chipman has been at the center of it. Things have moved quickly over the past week. So, I wanted to bring on Harsanyi to analyze what's going on because he is one of the top gun columnists out there. And he knows how D.C. politics actually work in real life. He gave some talked about how reactions from Democrats, the White House, and the media give insight into what direction Chipman's nomination is headed. And it doesn't look good for him. I also give an update on where gun sales are at in 2021 versus the all-time highs of 2020. Are we reaching a new normal? If so, what does that look like? Special Guest: David Harsanyi.

Latest Gallup polling reveals that, among U.S. institutions and leaders, American media has the lowest approval rating in terms of its response to the coronavirus. Which aspects of the media's reporting on COVID-19 account for such unpopularity? How has the media's historical coverage of the Trump administration contributed to its current predicament? As we balance health and economic concerns amidst a pandemic, what kind of nuanced questions should the media be asking, but due to partisan "gotcha" games, are not? Believing that the impossible becomes possible by congressional mandate is the essence of what Jacques Ellul called “the political illusion.” That illusion was on clear display last week when freshman New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Senator Edward Markey released what they call the “Green New Deal.” The summary of their plan was posted on Ocasio-Cortez's website Thursday but then taken down after mockery and criticism, even from within her own party. This Green New Deal was billed as a solution, not only to climate change but pretty much to all of society's ills, and is more ambitious than either its Depression-era namesake or Al Gore's wildest dreams. Writing at The Federalist, David Harsanyi described the proposal as an “overhaul of modernity.” Among its stated goals was to eliminate all fossil fuels, including oil, coal, and natural gas, as well as nuclear energy—all within ten years. It also promised to phase out 99 percent of existing automobiles and all other “combustion-engine vehicle[s],” whether on land, air, or sea, replacing them with electric vehicles, for which charging stations will be built “everywhere.” Once that's done, the legislators want to “retrofit every building in America,”— yes, that's a quote, again—with “state of the art energy efficiency.” They also want to ground all airplanes within a decade and replace them with “highspeed rail.” No word yet on how much the railway to Hawaii will cost. The Green New Deal also promised a “family-sustaining wage, family and medical leave, vacations, and a pension” for every American, as well as free education for life, including college and trade school, “healthy food,” “safe, affordable, adequate housing,” and “economic security” for all, even if they are “unable” or—get this—“unwilling” to work—2 Thessalonians 3:10 gives a clear response to that idea. As many commentators noted, the Green New Deal is really an attempt by a radical wing of the Democratic Party to signal its ideological purity. According to Jonah Goldberg at National Review, this is more utopian Christmas list than it is legislation. Even if Congress were to pass it—which would never happen—they couldn't actually act on it in any real sense. And yet, Harsanyi points out, it's worth noting that during its very short life, the proposal garnered endorsements from Democratic presidential hopefuls Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Julian Castro, and Beto O'Rourke. Because it struck such a chord with the up-and-coming of the party, we'd be foolish to dismiss it as mere posturing. There is a worldview behind the Green New Deal, which as Goldberg writes, “is dangerous.” The proposal, like every worldview, answers at least two questions: (1) what's wrong with the world, and (2) how can we fix it? On both counts, the Green New Deal is profoundly out-of-touch with reality. Rather than human evil, the breakdown of the family, or the compromise of morality, the Green New Deal identifies the modern economy as the problem, and promises to dismantle it without offering any viable replacement. It also guarantees free money, housing, education, healthcare, and even food, without any realistic way to pay for it. In short, what Ocasio-Cortez and Markey offer is the state as our savior. And they seem to believe that this is not only wise, but economically and technologically possible, if Washington will only decree it. The Green New Deal, as unfeasible as it may be, is an expression of a worldview that is very popular and which dominates left-leaning universities and media. It sees all problems as political problems and therefore all solutions as political, too. Though the plan isn't online anymore, you can be sure legislation is forthcoming. After all, so many of the legislators in power right now hold to some version of this utopian vision of the state, so it could hardly be otherwise. If we don't take this worldview seriously, especially in helping the next generation understand and dismantle it, it won't be a laughing matter.   http://www.breakpoint.org/2019/02/breakpoint-the-green-new-deal/

I have a good idea on the origins of several iconic firearms but I was impressed at the lessons included in the book that superimposed how those firearms came to be.  America has a history wrapped in firearms and a right of self-defense. As the old adage adage goes, “If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.” That may be literally true in places like Nazi Germany or communist regimes that have completely banned individuals from owning firearms, but in the U.S., most attempts to merely “control” gun ownership have resulted in far greater numbers of legal guns being purchased by the American public. Today there are more guns than people in the U.S.—by a lot—thanks in no small part by progressives' efforts to restrict our Second Amendment rights.David Harsanyi relays these counter-intuitively findings in his new book, First Freedom: A Ride Through America's Enduring History with the Gun — a must read for anyone who wants to understand the heated debate around guns in America, and why the Founders considered the individual right to bear arms so important that they put it right after freedom of speech, religion, etc. in the Bill of Rights. In short, we need the Second Amendment to defend the First. The liberties in the First Amendment could not have been guaranteed were it not for American assertion of their right to gun ownership during and after the American Revolution.David Harsanyi is a senior editor at The Federalist, a columnist at National Review, and author of four books. He joins me this Sunday to talk about the on-going importance of standing up for our Second Amendment rights, and how critics of gun rights most commonly miss the mark."Illegal guns are the problem. Not legal guns." -- Kanye. https://t.co/bhg6soive6 pic.twitter.com/O3SoHQZq0L— David Harsanyi (@davidharsanyi) October 11, 2018What is America's Gun Culture All About? For the record, I have never owned a gun couldn't tell you the difference between the butt and the blunderbuss. I get my libertarian bona fides as a card-carrying supporter of the Cato Institute and Reason Foundation — not the National Rifle Association. However, it warms my heart that many of my compatriots, both now and throughout history, have kept government tyranny at bay through their constant vigilance to keep original meaning of the 2nd Amendment intact.Harsanyi argues that those who oppose an originalist interpretation of the 2nd Amendment (securing an individual right to own guns) have a formidable challenge. First, they must fundamentally revise history, editing out the reliance of the colonists, pioneers, revolutionaries, on guns. Second, they must prove that the “well-regulated militia” clause is actually intended to enshrine a collective right to bear arms in unique cases that have long since become archaic.Against this line of reasoning, Harsanyi provides ample evidence from the writings of the founders. Before penning the immortal words of the Second Amendment, James Madison wrote:“Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of. Notwithstanding the military establishments of the several kingdoms of Europe, which are carried as far as the public resources will bear, the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.”This was not license to rebel — save against a government that no longer defends the rights of the people, and thus the nation. He shows how guns were used to end the institution of slavery, defend the world from totalitarian governments in Europe and Asia, and enable minorities to defend themselves against violent mobs.Today, Progressives are the main enemies of the rights of self -defense— seeking less to ban guns than to “control” them through stringent background checks and other methods that could easily be politicized and used against innocent people placed on faulty “watchlists.” How long will it be before democrats push to place anyone with conservative opinions on their lists of “mental defectives”?Listen now as we discuss the roots of the current gun control debate, and how it relates to the creeping threat of mob rule leading up to the 2018 mid-term elections.

On October 11th, 1994, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced their Nobel prize winners. Three brilliant scientists jointly won the coveted award. They were Professor John C. Harsanyi from the University of California, Berkley, Dr. John F. Nash from Princeton University and Professor Dr. Reinhard Selten, from the University of Bonn in Bonn, Germany. Less than a month later, on November 13th, 1994, a writer for The New York Times wrote a great article called The Lost Years of a Nobel Laureate which told the story of one of those men, Dr. John Nash. The author of that article was Sylvia Nasar. Sylvia, who was a staff writer at the Times when she wrote the article, would go on to expand on the article. In 1998, her book called A Beautiful Mind was released to critical acclaim. It would go on to be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and win the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography. Soon after, muti-award winning Hollywood producer Brian Grazer read an excerpt from Sylvia's book in the Vanity Fair magazine. Brian is the co-founder of Imagine Entertainment, a company he co-founded with director Ron Howard in 1986. Brian's films, which include some we've covered on the podcast such as Apollo 13 and Frost/Nixon, have won 43 Academy Awards and 131 Emmys. Needless to say, he knows a good story when he sees one. And he wasted no time in purchasing the film rights for Sylvia's book. On December 13th, 2001, the film A Beautiful Mind premiered to a limited audience before it's nation-wide release on January 4th, 2002. With a budget of about $58 million, A Beautiful Mind had an all-star cast led by Russell Crowe, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer, Paul Bettany and more. All under the helm of the talented Ron Howard as director. The film was a smash hit as it earned over $317 million worldwide on its way to winning the coveted Oscar for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Chuck Morse discusses politics and culture with David Harsanyi author of The People have Spoken (and they are wrong) and the Editor in Chief of The Federalist Book Description: WASHINGTON, D.C.—Democracy is leading America down the path to ruin. Americans are infatuated with a form of government that is “the most overrated, overused, overvalued, and misunderstood idea in political life,” according to nationally syndicated columnist David Harsanyi. When “the people” have power, it takes only 51 percent of them to ban a stiff energy drink or a decent light bulb. Harsanyi delivers a provactive, irreverent critique of democracy in his new book, The People Have Spoken (And They Are Wrong) (Regnery Publishing; Hardcover; March 10, 2014; $27.99). “Democracy” is not synonymous with “freedom.” Democracy is a process, not a panacea, and it’s only as good as the people who vote. In fact, the Founding Fathers knew that democracy can lead to tyranny, hence they built safeguards against it into the Constitution. Most voters are shockingly ill-informed, and a pure democracy allows public emotion to ram legislation into law based on scare tactics and majority whim. A centralized democracy allows the majority to determine what your healthcare looks like, what your children are taught, or whether you should ingest trans fats. Is that really their business?

Utilitarian Collective Choice and Voting

In his seminal Social Choice and Individual Values, Kenneth Arrow stated that his theory applies to voting. Many voting theorists have been convinced that, on account of Arrow’s theorem, all voting methods must be seriously flawed. Arrow’s theory is strictly ordinal, the cardinal aggregation of preferences being explicitly rejected. In this paper I point out that all voting methods are cardinal and therefore outside the reach of Arrow’s result. Parallel to Arrow’s ordinal approach, there evolved a consistent cardinal theory of collective choice. This theory, most prominently associated with the work of Harsanyi, continued the older utilitarian tradition in a more formal style. The purpose of this paper is to show that various derivations of utilitarian SWFs can also be used to derive utilitarian voting (UV). By this I mean a voting rule that allows the voter to score each alternative in accordance with a given scale. UV-k indicates a scale with k distinct values. The general theory leaves k to be determined on pragmatic grounds. A (1,0) scale gives approval voting. I prefer the scale (1,0,-1) and refer to the resulting voting rule as evaluative voting. A conclusion of the paper is that the defects of conventional voting methods result not from Arrow’s theorem, but rather from restrictions imposed on voters’ expression of their preferences. The analysis is extended to strategic voting, utilizing a novel set of assumptions regarding voter behavior.

Voting and the Cardinal Aggregation of Judgments

The paper elaborates the idea that voting is an instance of the aggregation of judgments, this being a more general concept than the aggregation of preferences. To aggregate judgments one must first measure them. I show that such aggregation has been unproblematic whenever it has been based on an independent and unrestricted scale. The scales analyzed in voting theory are either context dependent or subject to unreasonable restrictions. This is the real source of the diverse 'paradoxes of voting' that would better be termed 'voting pathologies'. The theory leads me to advocate what I term evaluative voting. It can also be called utilitarian voting as it is based on having voters express their cardinal preferences. The alternative that maximizes the sum wins. This proposal operationalizes, in an election context, the abstract cardinal theories of collective choice due to Fleming and Harsanyi. On pragmatic grounds, I argue for a three valued scale for general elections.
