For today's EPISODE #280, we will be speaking with a pioneer in the field of educational neuroscience. The book she wrote, Multiple Pathways to the Student Brain covers the years of work she spent speaking to teachers all over the world about how the brain learns and what this means in the classroom. At the time she graduated, she was the ONLY person, so far as she knew, using the term educational neuroscience. Watch this interview on YouTube here https://youtu.be/mU6eGZi6Rng On today's Episode #280 we will cover ✔ How Andrea was referred to study Janet Zadina's work back in 2014. ✔ The Impact of Dr. Zadina's Significant Contribution in Academics and Education Over the Years. ✔Janet Zadina's Arduous Pathway Bridging Education and the Brain since the 1980s. ✔ How Dr. Zadina Saw How Neuroimaging Could Help Change the Way We Teach Our Future Generations. ✔ Janet Zadina's Thoughts on Where Educational Neuroscience Began, and Where It's Going. ✔ Tools and Resources for Educators on her website www.brainresearch.us Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we cover the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning (for schools) and emotional intelligence training (in the workplace) with tools, ideas and strategies that we can all use for immediate results, with our brain in mind. I'm Andrea Samadi, an author, and educator with a passion for learning specifically on the topics of health, wellbeing and productivity, and launched this podcast to share how important an understanding of our brain is to our everyday life and results, using the most current brain research. If there's a tool, strategy or resource that I find, that could be helpful to improve productivity and results, whether we are a teacher in the classroom, a coach or in the modern workplace, I will share it here. On today's episode #280 we will be speaking with someone I was referred to back in 2014, from Jeff Kleck, from EP #246[i]. He was the educator who handed me a bunch of books off his book shelf and urged me to move in the direction of educational neuroscience, to make a bigger impact with my work. He didn't give me our next guest's book, (so I figured it must be important to him) but he told me to write down “Dr. Janet Zadina[ii]” and study her. Now, I don't ignore anything someone tells me to do, especially if there is learning involved, so I wrote down Dr. Zadina's name, and immediately followed her work back in 2014. I had no idea at the time that Dr. Zadina was one of THE leaders, spearheading educational neuroscience in the country, before it was even called this, and now fast forward to last September, when Jeff Kleck and I finished our interview, he asked me “Did you ever interview Dr. Janet Zadina?” I just looked at him thinking “How did I miss that?” remembering it was important. I remembered standing in his office, holding a bunch of books he asked me to read, and then we went to his computer and he pulled up all the FREE resources and most up to date research on Janet Zadina's website[iii] that he told me to review. It was Dr. Zadina's work that helped me to begin in this field of educational neuroscience, making the connections to the brain and learning. Today's guest, Dr. Janet Zadina, we will soon discover, a former high school and college teacher and cognitive neuroscientist whose background, expertise, energy, and humor all took her to international acclaim. Before we meet Dr. Zadina, I want to share a bit about how she is changing lives with science and strategies. She's been said to be "Powerful!" "Engaging!" "Innovative!" "Life Changing!" These are just a few of the words audiences use to describe concepts and presentations by Janet Zadina, Ph.D. who is known for her extraordinary ability to inform, educate, and empower audiences with the scholarly and credible brain research. She has made such an impact on the academic and education communities that Society for Neuroscience honored her with the prestigious 2011 Science Educator Award. This recognition solidified her reputation as an educator of high credentials making significant contributions to public education and raising awareness of critical issues in the field of educational neuroscience. Through her impactful, powerful, and entertaining presentations and transformational workshops, Dr. Zadina is changing the way teachers, students, and even business professionals understand and utilize the brain. She's determined to tear down brain myths and build up lives stemming from her personal experiences with students with dyslexia and their learning struggles. When she learned that a new “window” into the brain was possible with neuroimaging, she knew she had to go back to school and learn neuroscience. She earned a Ph.D. in Education while conducting MRI research on neurodevelopmental language disorders at Tulane Medical School, where she then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cognitive neuroscience. She's the founder and CEO of Brain Research and Instruction, has been honored as a Distinguished Fellow in the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA), among other honors. She is the author of reading and learning textbooks for students as well as professional development books for teachers, including Multiple Pathways to the Student Brain[iv]. I've waited a very long time to have this chance to speak with Dr. Zadina. With patience, I knew we would meet someday. I hope you enjoy meeting her, as much as I know I will. Welcome Dr. Janet Zadina! I can't believe it was almost 10 years ago that an educator who found your work, passed it onto me and without even knowing it, you sparked something to help me get to where I am today with educational neuroscience at the heart of everything I think about, and do. Isn't that crazy to think of the impact you've had on others around the world? Where have we reached you today? Are you in New Orleans? INTRO: Before we get to your questions, I just wonder how many people do you run into who share stories like I did with you, about how learning from you ignited something in them somehow? If we connect the dot looking backwards in your life, we all have people and experiences that shift our direction in some way. I wonder who crossed your path that took you on this pathway to becoming a neuroscientist? What was the defining moment? Spear heading anything new is never easy but I've heard some horror stories from past guests who really struggled when they begin in this field. As a pioneer in educational neuroscience, I wonder, what were some of the biggest challenges that you faced? Why did you make the switch from doing MRI research in the lab to actually speaking to educators? So now we are all well into the digital age, and most of the books I read are on my phone, in my Kindle reader, but I've got a select few books that sit on the corner of my desk for me to reflect back to when I need some ideas or inspiration. What should we know about reading books digitally versus actually holding a print edition that we can highlight and refer back to often? There were a many important AHA moments within the chapters of your book Multiple Pathways to the Student Brain but the first passage that stuck out to me was “this books stems from my decade of speaking to teachers….at the time I graduated, I was the only person, so far as I knew, using the term educational neuroscience.” Looking back now, where is this discipline now, from where you saw it in those beginning days? What was your “mission” when you began speaking about the brain and learning and writing your book? Was it that you wanted “to help teachers at all levels” to understand this information that they were craving to learn? Do you have anything exciting coming up with your presentations? When I first began learning about the brain, I found some of your early TED TALKS and presentations where I started to connect stress and the brain to its impact on our students' learning in the classroom. What motivated you to transition to speaking primarily about the effects of anxiety, high stress, and trauma on the brain and learning? What is one take-away for teachers from your work on this topic? In other words, what might be one of the most important things they can do to help with their stress? Do you offer educators any resources they can access other than presentations? I'll never forget Jeff Kleck showing me all the resources on your website. Dr. Zadina, it's been an honor to have you on the podcast today. I'll be forever grateful that Jeff Kleck referred me to your work all those years ago, and then so happy that we were able to connect to make this interview happen. For people who want to learn more about you, is the best place your website? Thank you for the years of research. I know that many of us are only just scratching the surface with what we are capable of doing with this information. Thank you so much Janet! Intro: Before jumping into my talk, I'll give you the backstory to this verseJesus’ apostles were putting down roots in Jerusalem- this made sense, because Jerusalem was the hub of Israel’s faith for centuries• but settling there was not what Jesus told them they would be doing◦ they would be going into all the world with gospel (Acts 1:8)• so the challenge was how to get them out of Jerusalem and into their mission? And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. (Acts 8:1)- Philip, the main character in episode, fled to Samaria• he began sharing his faith with the Samaritans and soon crowds were coming to hear him◦ that brought the apostles Peter and John out of Jerusalem to Samaria• that’s when God abruptly sent Philip after this one person
Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, episode #99 with Irene Lyon[i], MSC. who teaches the world’s leaders and coaches how to work with the nervous system to heal trauma, and live full and productive lives. To date her online programs[ii] have reached people in over 63 countries and Irene clearly has a knack for making complex information easy for ALL of us to understand and apply to our lives, which is exactly the type of person I am always looking for on this podcast.Watch the interview on YouTube here.My name is Andrea Samadi, and if you are new here, I’m a former educator who created this podcast to bring the most current neuroscience research, along with high performing experts who have risen to the top of their field, with specific strategies or ideas that you can implement immediately, whether you are an educator, or in the corporate space, to take your results to the next level. If we want to improve our social, emotional and cognitive abilities, it all starts with an understanding of our brain. Welcome Irene, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me today, as we are approaching our 100th episode! We are always looking for people who can take complex concepts and help explain them so that we can all use them in our daily lives for improved results, so thank you for being here to help us to better understand trauma, our nervous system and our results.INTRO: Before we get to the questions, can you explain exactly what you do as a nervous system specialist and somatic neuroplasticity expert and perhaps who some of your mentors were for you when you began this work?Q1: Since this topic is of high interest, I’m looking forward to diving deeper into the area of trauma so we can all gain more awareness and understanding of what trauma looks like for each person as an individual. I’ve just started to scrape the surface of this topic in the yearlong neurocoaching program I am taking with the study of Joseph LeDoux on trauma, fears, anxiety and memory consolidation. LeDoux says that each person has their own anxiety level, and we respond to trauma or difficult situations in different ways because our brains are “one of a kind, they are wired differently from our genes and our life experiences.” (LeDoux). Can you explain the science of trauma, and why one person could easily walk away from an accident or traumatic situation, yet another person’s life completely unravels with the same incident? What’s happening on the brain level for this to occur?Q2: Can you explain what you learned from Steven Hoskinson, that pretty much ALL chronic and mental illness (conditions that affect our thinking, feeling, mood and behavior) can be connected to dysregulation of the nervous system and unresolved traumatic stress? Q3: What is your 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up[iii] where you take people from a sick nervous system with emotional symptoms like depression, anxiety, stress, fatigue, immune system troubles to a healthy nervous system that includes improved sleep, a boosted immunity, elevated energy levels, and a regulated gut health? We’ve looked closely at Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory on our episode #59[iv] and most listeners who follow this podcast know of the importance of understanding our Central Nervous System when it comes to managing our stress response, but can you share how you show people how to break through anxiety, burnout and chronic symptoms by healing the nervous system—what you teach in your Smart Body, Smart Mind Course[v]?Q4: I have to ask you just one question on your dissertation that you wrote in 2008 while pursuing your Masters in Research in Australia within the biomedical and health sciences, since the topic of your dissertation ties into where we have ended the year on this podcast, with a focus on health and anti-aging strategies. I know this area is of high interest for our listeners since episodes that focus on health and the brain has been very popular. You quote the statistic that in 2030, 70 million people in the US will be 65 years and over, what would you say would be the TOP 3 health staples that you have found to be crucial for longevity, mental well-being and health?Irene, I want to thank you so much for your time and knowledge today. Now more than ever, we all need to understand these strategies to deal with the daily challenges that we are all facing in today’s world. We all need to be intentional about our mental wellbeing and health. If someone wants to learn more about you, and your courses, they can go to https://irenelyon.com/ or visit your YouTube channel where you have thousands of followers and videos that dive deep into the courses that you offer https://www.youtube.com/c/IreneLyonhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/nervoussystemhttps://twitter.com/Irene_LyonQ6: What closing thoughts do you have that you think we should all be aware of these days when it comes to mental health, well-being and the brain?RESOURCES:Using Neuroscience to Understand Fear and Anxiety: A 2 Step Framework by Joseph Ledoux, Ph.D. https://www.cns.nyu.edu/ledoux/pdf/LeDoux%20Pine%20Two%20Systsem.pdfNeuroscientist Jospeh LeDoux on Anxiety and Fear published on YouTube Sept.28, 2016 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87xF-wB9LEsThe Feldenkrais Method for https://feldenkrais.com/REFERENCES:[i] Irene Lyon YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO5MneHxOKA[ii] Irene’s Online Programs https://irenelyon.com/programs/[iii] 21 Day Nervous System Tune-up https://21daytuneup.com/#cta-1[iv] Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast EPISODE #59 with Suzanne Gundersen https://www.achieveit360.com/suzanne-gundersen-on-the-polyvagal-theory-in-practice/[v] Smart Body, Smart Mind https://smartbodysmartmind.com/

We know data is important and we all have access to it. Access to a little too much data. But, is this data legitimate, usable and trustworthy enough to make business decisions from? Ola Degteva can help us here. Ola has been knee-deep in data for over 10 years and knows a thing or two about how to get the best from the information we have and receive. Working within her own family business as well as assisting clients in a variety of industries, Ola not only generates results but helps businesses understand what data they should be analysing and even, where to get it from! In this episode we cover; - The data we should be looking for - How to develop actional insights from data - Spotting and filling data gaps - The types of software we should be using Watch the episode video: https://youtu.be/aqdGYydL-j8 Takeaways Top Tip Always look to have a centralized data approach. Pick one data stream and go with this as your source of truth. Anything more than this starts to muddy the waters in terms of finalising your results. Of course use more than one data stream, but use them to interoperate your singular primary source. Favourite Quote ‘The first thing you need to do is know where you stand and know your benchmarks.’ If you don’t do this you won’t know what is a good result for you within a certain industry. You could think you are performing very well, only to find out that your results, compared to an industry average, is just that…. Average. And Finally, the Most Important Takeaway from this Episode Whenever you are running a digital campaign, segment your market and use the more relevant data points to help you understand what is occurring. Like Ola stated, you could have conversions, interactions and impressions as data points for very different sub-sets of your market. Focus on these individually to move consumers closer to their end goal. Music Featured on this Podcast: Sleepy in the Garden Lobo Loco www.musikbrause.de Creative Commons License

We all like to think that discrimination is something we all avoid and that inclusion is the one thing that is non-negotiable. But are we really doing this or just simply paying lip service to it? Are we actually afraid of being seen as exploitative or insensitive by simply doing what we think is right? Let’s see what we need to consider when doing what is right and inclusive with Martyn Sibley. Martyn is the founder of Disability Horizons and Purple Goat Agency, both of which focus on the needs and wants of the disabled community from both a commercial perspective and as individuals. As Marytn describes himself, he’s ‘just a regular guy who happens to have a disability (called Spinal Muscular Atrophy – SMA)’. Being a regular guy means not only running an agency and an online disability lifestyle publication, but going skiing, scuba diving, flying a plane – but that’s the boring normal stuff isn’t it. Let’s get back that marketing thingy. In this episode we cover; - Planning for inclusiveness with our marketing - How to say the ‘right’ thing - Getting your voice heard over all the rubbish Watch the episode video: https://youtu.be/enIASKSUbK8 Takeaways Top Tip Look to make products and services that include everyone. Using a universal design approach not only means you are following the basics of Inclusion Marketing, but this usually means looking for simplicity and ease of use which in turn can reduce friction, which we all want less of. A great example of this is Siri. Favourite Quote When Martyn was discussing getting your voice heard in a crowded market he believes that ‘everything you need is there…. it’s just the action, it’s the doing’ And Finally, the Most Important Takeaway from this Episode When looking to create awareness within your marketplace. Remember Martyn’s three stages to success; 1 – Tell your story 2 – Build a community 3 – Have a strong call to action Music Featured on this Podcast: Sleepy in the Garden Lobo Loco www.musikbrause.de Creative Commons License
How do team, in this weeks episode, I speak about the importance of going the extra mile with your clients. The service you deliver is a direct reflection on the luck you create around your business.Intro - Before we get going I feel there is too many people moaning about not making enough money yet they aren’t doing anything about it. If you’re a business owner, or even a salesperson trying to make commission, go and sell. It’s simpleEffort = Reward - The amount of time and effort you put into a client the more likely it is they will become a long standing client. Don’t be annoyed when a client leave you after a month because you offered them nothing and they have less in the bank. Going the extra mile - I’m not saying you have to shine your clients shoes but some extra service “not included” in the price doesn’t go a miss. Leading on from this, I give the example of giving someone a free recipe book or having a towel of your client, or t shirts, water bottles, I could go on and on. Take the client out, see them outside the work environment. Show them you care, it’s a two way street.Offering quality reflecting client quality - If you service is crap, you can’t expect to have good clients. When I say good clients, I mean ones you have a strong relationship with, ones who are reliable, ones you can count on, ones you get results from. If what you offer it below par, how can you expect an above par client? It doesn’t workMaking your own luck - I’m sure a lot of you have been effected by covid and potentially are now struggling, however, I’m a big believer in creating your own luck. You could get unlucky and lose clients, BUT if you served for those clients well over lockdown, would they still leave you? Let’s take it from a business standpoint, if you’re working in marketing and you have clients you need to sell too. If another company looked after that said client more than you, you’ve already lose themExcuses - I’m fed up of people using excuses as to why they have no clients. If someone else in your industry is busy, you have to ask yourself “what an I doing wrong” “what do I need to improve on”. Stop blaming everyone else for why your business is suffering, take a stop back and look at yourself. It’s you and only youConclude - Don’t be a dickhttp://alexfitcleland.com

We know video is important in Marketing Land today, we’ve covered it before in the podcast. And everyone seems to be a video content producer or at least is attempting to be one. So it’s time to revisit and get some actionable insights into how good video content is put together. Kristian Altuve is the owner and Creative Director of Zero Degree Story. Kristian helps people tell their story through cinematic videos that convert strangers into super fans with the right mix of logic, emotion, and storytelling (putting method behind and in-front of the camera). It is thought that 72% of consumers prefer video to learn about a product or service (Wyzowl), so it really is time to take this seriously and Kristain doesn’t just leave it at the video production, it’s the whole package – especially post-production, something we all forget as our carefully curated videos just sit there along with all the cats in hats doing zip all to help your business! In this episode we run through Kristian’s process for turning strangers into super fans, including; 1 - Research & Strategy 2 - Developing a Message 3 - Launching and Scaling Plus, getting the right balance of story and meaningful content But first, a question I ask everyone (determines if we become friends or not to be honest), Kristian, what’s your favourite Pixar movie? Watch the episode video: https://youtu.be/lNcs8NCAsyo Takeaways Top Tip Regardless of what you are doing, it all starts with your customers! So talk to them. They may become the voice you never knew you needed within your organisation. After all, they are whom we seek to serve isn’t it? And if it isn’t, why the hell are you in business? Favourite Quote ‘I think it comes down to the psychology of emotion and logic. We rationalise with logic, but we ultimately make an emotional decision’ So when creating video content, just think about how you can make that emotional connection, yet maintain that logical communication that is easy to rationalise. And Finally, the Most Important Takeaway from this Episode In an era of free media, it is so important to remember that these platforms are there to make money…. From advertising, so paying to increase your reach, boost your awareness, can act as a springboard for your video content. Don’t ignore it and think that people will just find it. You need to put as much work into the distribution as you do the creation. Music Featured on this Podcast: Sleepy in the Garden Lobo Loco www.musikbrause.de Creative Commons License

Is it 90 min? Why? Hi Coach, I know you recommend using a pvc pipe for foam rolling. I will admit that I started with the “pool noodle” foam roller I already had and since it hurt really bad I figured I would keep using it till I acclimated then move to something more firm. I’m really now, do you have recommendations for the length and diameter to get. Also what do I cover it with? Could I glue a yoga mat to it? Thank you! My office gym is not open so running at lunch isn’t really an prion, but I try to walk 20-30 min outside a few days per week. What should I consider or focus on to get the most benefit? Engage core? In 1971 high school student Juliane Koepcke fell two miles into the Peruvian rain forest when her airliner broke up in a thunderstorm. Miraculously, she survived the fall, but her ordeal was just beginning. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Juliane's arduous trek through the jungle in search of civilization and help. We'll also consider whether goats are unlucky and puzzle over the shape of doorknobs. Intro: Before writing about time machines, H.G. Wells calculated that he'd earned a single pound in his writing endeavors. In 1868, as an engineering trainee, Robert Louis Stevenson explored the foundation of a breakwater at Wick.
