In this honest and unfiltered conversation with Irene Lyon, we explore why so many trauma healing efforts are falling short, and why that isn't entirely the fault of the individual. From the bastardization of nervous system language to how the obsession with "staying calm" often misses the point, we unpack the uncomfortable truths about what meaningful healing really involves. We dig into how functional freeze keeps you locked in patterns of managing symptoms rather than building true capacity, why early developmental trauma is the missing link most people overlook, and how the explosion of online nervous system content is creating more confusion than progress. Real nervous system work takes time, and the relationship between your physiology, psychology, and environment is far more complex than anything an Instagram post can capture. If you're done with quick fixes and want to understand the deeper path to lasting change, this conversation goes where most don't.https://irenelyon.com/Irene's 21 Day Nervous System Tune-UpIrene's Smart Body Smart Mind 12 Week ProgramSubscribe to Here for the Truth Fridays.Take the Real AF Test Now!Discover Your Truth Seeker Archetype.Join our membership Friends of the Truth.Watch all our episodes.Connect with us on Telegram.Access all our links.Hosted by Joel Rafidi & YerasimosIntro and outro music: Illusion by Joel RafidiTakeaways: Trauma healing often falls short due to a misunderstanding of nervous system complexities. The obsession with remaining calm oversimplifies the multifaceted nature of true healing. Functional freeze can trap individuals in symptom management rather than fostering genuine capacity. Early developmental trauma is frequently overlooked, yet it is crucial for comprehensive healing. The proliferation of online nervous system content can lead to confusion rather than clarity about healing practices. Effective nervous system work requires time and a nuanced understanding of physiology and psychology.

What happens when your body calls for change—and you actually listen? In this powerful episode, Alex sits down with Matthew Cooke, founder of Body-Based Breakthrough (B3), to explore how burnout led him away from the tech hustle and into the healing world of somatic coaching. With roots in high-performance culture and a life-changing crash into chronic stress, Matthew shares how he pieced together his own path to nervous system healing—one breath, one journal entry, and one movement at a time.Matthew opens up about the unexpected clarity he found in yoga classes and long walks, how he began listening to his body in new ways, and the moment a client told him, “It's a shame there's only one of you.” That nudge sparked the creation of B3—a replicable somatic system now used by coaches, therapists, and leaders around the world. From working with senior tech execs to certifying a new generation of somatic practitioners, Matthew's approach is both deeply personal and highly practical.Together, Alex and Matthew unpack the principles of B3, the importance of orientation and regulation, and how somatic practices are transforming how we live, lead, and heal. Whether you're a practitioner or someone simply curious about nervous system work, this episode is full of insights that will land in your body as much as your mind.Key Highlights: [00:00:05] Introducing Matthew Cooke and Body-Based Breakthrough (B3)[00:03:32] From tech startup to burnout at 24[00:05:38] Body and mind at war—seeking deeper understanding[00:06:33] Yoga and long walks spark clarity and insight[00:07:27] Journaling during movement—early seeds of B3[00:08:31] Clients experience reduced anxiety and imposter syndrome[00:09:47] “It's a damn shame there's only one of you”[00:10:25] B3 is born—systematizing somatic coaching[00:11:07] The endless curiosity of the nervous system[00:12:09] B3 practice components: movement, journaling, breathwork, coaching[00:12:31] The role of orientation—start and end of the practice[00:12:54] Nervous system safety and external environmentLinks & ResourcesBody-Based Breakthrough (B3) Website: https://www.bodybasedbreakthrough.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bodybasedbreakthrough/Somatic Experiencing by Peter Levine: https://www.somaticexperiencing.com/about-peter Polyvagal Theory by Dr. Stephen Porges: https://www.stephenporges.com/ Organic Intelligence by Steve HoskinsonDARe (Dynamic Attachment Repatterning experience) – Diane Poole Heller: https://traumasolutions.com/learn-dare-approach/ Irene Lyon's Nervous System Work – irenelyon.comFind us Online: Website: https://www.redbeardsomatictherapy.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/redbeardsomatictherapy/

“They're chasing the tail of self-development but they don't realize that it's survival stress and stored trauma that they're managing all the time,” says Irene Lyon, pioneer in somatic and nervous system work, about the many “functionally frozen” people who attempt to engage in healing modalities while ignoring the foundational issue. On today's episode of the Quantum Biology Collective podcast, Irene explains that when we experience trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACE), and fail to release them physically—the way all other animals do in nature—they remain trapped in our autonomic nervous system. This is the basis of a myriad of chronic diseases, biomechanical issues, and dysfunctional behaviors. Until these baseline issues are addressed, healing modalities—namely meditation—remain ineffective and can actually cause far worse problems by bringing trauma to the surface and evoking the body's original panic response. By following our impulses, practicing self-regulation and living in closer alignment with nature, we can not only heal our trauma and open untold vistas of potential, but, being quantum beings, change the course of others, including those in the future and past generations. Irene's clients have even reported it's made parenting easy. She'll discuss how to retrain yourself to best respond when you experience physical pain—including in public—and what to think about before embracing popular techniques such as breath work and cold plunging. There's nothing “wrong” with us, we just have stored traumatic memories in our nervous system that wants to move out. Learn more about Irene's 21-Day Tuneup to learn how you can start to approach the process of somatic healing and nervous system regulation. Quotes “If you have no place to put the memories that flood through when you get quiet with yourself, psychosis can occur, a chronic illness can occur.” (20:06 | Irene Lyon) “We have unconscious memories of everything that's occurred to us sitting in our nervous system physiology and so the penny drops and all this old survival stress just bubbles up.” (31:14 | Irene Lyon) “It's not that there's something wrong with you per se, it's that—if we're really accurate—there's stored traumatic memory in the autonomic nervous system that wants to move out.” (35:39 | Irene Lyon) “The autonomic nervous system governs the fight/flight/freeze/shutdown/collapse. It also governs our temperature regulation, our digestion, immune system, cardiovascular system, our social engagement. So, when we start to listen to these impulses, it's like we're reverse engineering the health of the system.” (51:25 | Irene Lyon) Links Connect with Irene Lyon, MSc: https://irenelyon.com/ Socials: @irenelyon Bon Charge Discount Code: at checkout enter the code: QBC to receive 15% off https://us.boncharge.com/collections/blue-light-blocking-glasses **If you're in the US and have a Health Savings Account (HSA or FSA) BonCharge products are an eligible expense** To receive a FREE infographic of the Ideal Circadian Day & join our email list: https://www.quantumbiologycollective.com/qbc-newsletter-aqb To find a practitioner who understands quantum biology: www.quantumbiologycollective.org To see details about the Applied Quantum Certification: www.appliedquantumbiology.com Follow on Instagram & Facebook: @quantumbiologycollecitve Twitter: @quantumhealthtv Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Nervous system, somatics and what true regulation means. We go there again with a brilliant practitioner. It's a biggy this week. It's going to be a cause for reflection and compassion for many of us, I think! I wanted to have @irenelyon on the show because I've become concerned myself about AI and the impact on education online - models hired to demo a few ‘easy exercises' to regulate system and modules churned out by computers, funnels built by bots and everything geared to algorithm eye catching… it's the Wild West out there and we're playing with humans who actually need support. What people ‘think' doing work to regulate the system might have gone through to need it: WarPhysical or mental abuseDifficult experiences around big moves, big illnesses, bullyingCrime or violence committing, “troubled youth”.What experiences also can mean regulation work can be neededIllness, surgery, difficult birthsContact sportsShaming or being in the care of “overreacting adults” as a childBeing left to cry oneself to sleep as a babyHead trauma such as a fall/hitting head Break ups, grief, job lossAnd the list goes on! We unpack the many ways to know if you're connecting with a good person/platform to work with - how to spot ‘quick fixing red flags on the internet' and then some of the common situations where people go through every possible treatment for whatever it is they're experiencing as adults, only to find it stems from dysregulation. The weMove podcast is getting in to the Nervous System, what it is, what it does for us and how we can relearn how we communicate with it to take us from a place of fight, flight, freeze, fawn to a more regulated alert and healthy state giving us back the power to experience life and movement. We have heard the phrase Nervous System many times and trauma equally as much. The last few years the word trauma has become increasingly used and focussed on. However we have felt being stuck in this place of trauma contemplation was not the place to be, nor was covering our past with experiences that took us away from what we were feeling, be that ice baths, breathing practices, daily training, ointments and potions. None of which are wrong but our bodies tell us what the problem is through these sensations that if we numb them, we cannot feel. And if we cannot feel, then we cannot heal. Our guest @irenelyon Irene Lyon, MSC. and nervous system expert, teaches people around the world how to work with the nervous system to transform trauma, heal body and mind, and live full, creative lives. To date, her online programs and classes have reached over 9,500 people in over 90 countries. Irene has a Master's Degree in Biomedical and Health Science and also has a knack for making complex info easy for all of us to understand and apply to our lives. She has extensively studied and practices the works of Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais, Peter Levine (founder of Somatic Experiencing) and Kathy Kain (founder of Somatic Practice). Irene spends her free time eating delicious food, hiking in the mountains or walking along the Pacific Ocean in her hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia. Irene joins the Mind, Body, and Soil podcast for her third visit to discuss what it means to become apprenticed to your body. Better yet, a little tardiness on Kate's part at the beginning of the episode allows Kate and Irene to explore in real time the difference between a regulated and dysregulated nervous system. In it, the idea of “window of tolerance” is teased apart. All in all this is a short and sweet episode about connecting in with your body. To access the full episode and our conference library of 200+ fascinating psychology talks and interviews (with certification), please visit: https://twumembers.com. Delving into the nuanced landscape of trauma, this talk redefines its contours. Beyond the apparent shockwaves of accidents or abuse, the lens of somatic experiencing unveils trauma as an entity residing within physiology, spanning tissues, nerves, and interactions. The ebb and flow of trauma's grip unfolds as dysregulation within one's system. Manifesting either as rigid fixity or graceful flow, this analogy likens it to a dam obstructing water's natural course.Peeling back the layers of identity, the interplay between personality and individuality emerges. Molded by adaptive responses to societal norms, authentic individuality can languish in the shadows. Yet, some craft safeguarding personalities – a guise concealing pain, as seen in comedians wielding humor as armor. Unlocking healing's door, the crux lies in fostering incremental capacity. Analogous to mastering a new skill or language, the journey entails nurturing the ability to navigate emotions, sensations, and responses. Nervous system regulation transcends mere emotional release. It's a symphony of physiological cues – trembles, tears – incrementally knitting the tapestry of healing and resilience. --- This session was recorded as part of the "Holistic Psychotherapy Summit" in January 2023. On this intimate and education solo episode, I dive into my current adventures with adrenal fatigue, nervous system healing and how poly-vagal theory ties these together. I also share about my insights into spiritual bypass and how I was unable to see where my work really was, until I couldn't 'do' anything else. I share my insights from Irene Lyon's work and programs and some of my key takeaways from learning about adrenal burnout, the different phases and some of the key remedies that we can do to help our kidneys and adrenal glands (hint: vitamin C). It's been enlighting for me on a deep level and I'm happy to report I'm starting to see and more importantly, feel, some shifts. It hasn't been easy and patience is taking on a new meaning, but I do feel this work specifically on the nervous system, is absolutely essential for true healing and being at our most vital. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mindufulenduranceprogram/support

Trauma is often defined as an event, but the freeze response can develop from the most subtle inconsistencies from your childhood. Today is part two of my interview with Irene Lyon, a somatic practitioner and nervous system expert. She explains how trauma is not always obvious and how you can overcome your freeze response without even knowing the original cause. The path to joy is not through analyzing the past but by understanding how you feel today. Even if you had an amazing childhood and find it difficult to come to terms with your current feelings of anxiety because you have no event to blame it on, there is a clear path to joy that you can begin today. Your nervous system is connected and controls every cell in your body, so a perceived threat can upset your hormones, gut, and every stress organ in your body which can cause uncomfortable physical sensations and anxiety. Irene offers somatic tools that will highlight your traumatic freeze response, giving you the opportunity to address and move through them. It is a painful process, but through hard work, you will become in tune with your body and finally be able to experience joy, safety, and support. Key Takeaways: [1:47] How Insecurities are Created by Seemingly Harmless Inconsistencies in Childhood [4:40] Learning different standards of behaviors from each parent [6:40] What Happens When you Don't Address Childhood Inconsistencies [9:40] Attempting to compartmentalize the natural flow of human expression [11:30] Entering into survival mode keeps you from living a normal healthy life [13:00] How to Start the Healing Process [15:00] If your biology can't internally motivate it can tarnish learned behaviors [17:10] Embrace discomfort and get curious about your body's natural processes [21:00] Remind yourself that everyday you have the ability to make a different choice [22:40] The Life that is Possible After Healing [28:00] Learning the language of your nervous system through intentional touch [32:00] Connecting with your body and expanding into a life of joy Find More From Irene: Irene Lyon: https://irenelyon.com/ 21-Day Tune-Up: https://21daytuneup.com/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/IreneLyon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/irenelyon/ How do you know if you have trauma? On today's episode, I am interviewing Irene Lyon, a nervous system specialist using somatic work to promote neuroplasticity in those suffering from trauma. She explains how people are becoming functionally frozen from even the most innocuous events throughout their childhood. We now understand that, even in infancy, trauma disrupts our developing nervous systems often as a result of the disillusionment of the mother and child bonding process. Allowing a baby to “cry it out” without attending to their needs is a popular parenting style in our culture, but this practice often forces the baby to develop a freeze response for survival purposes. Every time a child is denied their basic needs for food, for the bathroom, and especially for connection it creates a separation from the child's own intuition which begins to degrade their nervous system. These types of traumas are often dismissed, but it is in these crucial years of childhood that shape our ability to cope in adulthood. Fortunately, you can overcome trauma and rewire your nervous system. Since our brains have the ability to change and adapt to cope with trauma, it is also able to change and adapt to healthy conditions. Recognition is the first step to overcoming your freeze response, and in this episode, Irene equips you with the knowledge and somatic tools to break out of the cycle of trauma. Key Takeaways: [1:55] How we have lost our intuition on how to raise a human being [4:20] We have the coding in our DNA [6:40] Its the daily habits in childhood that shape your nervous system [8:40] Functionally Frozen State of Childhood [10:25] Stopping the natural flow of the child [14:20] When did we start numbing your feelings [15:30] Children are not yet functional in a social situation and can't self regulate [17:50] What happens when you don't attend to the child's needs [21:30] Continuum Theory: Who really needs to do trauma work [23:00] Children from tribal communities aren't having these issues with trauma [25:30] Presence is a gift to your children Find More From Irene: Irene Lyon: https://irenelyon.com/ 21-Day Tune-Up: https://21daytuneup.com/ Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/irenelyon/ Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/c/IreneLyon How do you know if you have trauma? The nervous system is surprisingly far-reaching within us. In this episode of the Beauty of Conflict, Susan and CrisMarie are happy to be joined by Irene Lyon, a nervous system expert, to talk about how working with the nervous system can transform trauma to heal one's body and mind. Humans, unlike other animals, have a higher brain that has the ability to ignore signals caused by stressful situations or events, but that doesn't mean they never occurred. Just like built-up pressure within a sealed container, unresolved issues can explode and express themselves through symptoms or even illness in our bodies. To explain how to address this, Irene starts by breaking down the nervous system into smaller systems and talks about their function in our daily lives and how they respond to threatening situations. She presents different examples to illustrate why upbringing plays a pivotal role in the way we deal with conflict, providing introspective and somatic alternatives that anyone can understand. Tune in to this episode to learn how we can have a better, healthier body by working with our minds! Big update! The chaos is ending. Listen to this episode's intro for the explanation. This podcast is about to become an archive of old episodes, dedicated to The F*ck It Diet. But before it ends, I need one more chaotic moment: having to repost this episode that I already posted last month. Why? After all of that, trying to merge my old podcast into substack, I decided instead, to "split" my podcasts again, and leave The F*ck It (Diet) Podcast as it's own, standalone archive, that's specific to the food healing journey. This way, it will better be able to support new people who are reading the book, or just finding the information for the first time. But because I had the podcast merged for a few months over on substack, there were a few episodes that were posted on the new substack feed, that were not posted on the old feed. My episode with Irene on our nervous systems is one of them, so now that I've "split" the podcasts, it has to be "reposted" over here again, if I want it to be on this feed. And, I think this episode is really relevant to "The Emotional Part" of The F*ck It Diet. So I want it to be here! You may have already listened to my conversation with Irene back when I posted it last month! If that's the case, you can just listen to my new intro where I explain why I'm ending this podcast, and starting fresh somewhere else. My new podcast will be over at carolinedooner.substack.com (there, you can find the actual podcast link listings. So if you want to find my new podcast on spotify or apple, you're going to have to separately follow me over there!) Also! If you've listened to my conversation with Irene already, she is currently enrolling her yearly program Smart Body, Smart Mind through September 19th, 2022. If you've been wanting to go deep on nervous system and trauma work, make sure to check it out. To get some of her trainings for free, check out her free video series (it's like 2 hours worth of video lessons!). My Conversation with Irene Today I am sharing my conversation with Irene Lyon, a trauma expert, educator, and trained somatic practitioner. We talk about some of the basics of the nervous system, the body holding onto trauma, and some myths and misconceptions about how healing works. If you've read The F*ck It Diet or Tired as F*ck, you know how passionate I am about this method of healing, even though… I have been thinking about how much I should be getting back into focusing on it... And, as I say at the end of the episode, I actually just now am back into focusing on it. I just took Irene's 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up. And I love it all so much, that I am now an affiliate for it. What that means is, if you use my link for her program, and sign up, I will get a commission. As I mentioned above, Irene is currently enrolling her yearly program Smart Body, Smart Mind through September 19th, 2022. If you've been wanting to go deep on nervous system work, make sure to check it out! To go through some of her trainings for free, check out her free trauma healing video series (it's like 2 hours worth of video lessons!)
