In my journey as a podcast host and wellness author, few experts have shaped my understanding as profoundly as Dr. James DiNicolantonio. His groundbreaking work on minerals, particularly sodium, magnesium, and potassium, has become foundational as I craft my 40th book, “Belly Goes First”, a powerful new approach to erasing hunger, reversing belly fat, and promoting lifelong wellness. Alongside previous conversations with Dr. Jason Fung and Robb Wolf, these four interviews with Dr. James represent some of the most significant recordings I've made since launching this podcast. Today, I'm thrilled to share this special “super series,” bringing together all four enlightening discussions dating back to our very first meeting in 2018, where Dr. James initially opened my eyes to the transformative power of minerals. These insights have also become the scientific cornerstone for my passion project and life's opus, Zero Hunger Water. Please note that the first interview includes video, while the remaining three are audio-only but just as impactful—turn on captions for additional clarity. This special episode gives you the science, practical tools, and inspiration to not only conquer hunger forever but also radically improve athletic performance, longevity, and overall health.Episode Chapters & Highlights00:00 Welcome & Introduction02:13 Interview 1: Dr. James on Unleashing the Power of Salt to Maximize Performance • 05:45 How Coffee Depletes Sodium (Caffeine & Salt Loss) • 08:47 Salt Preloading for Better Athletic Performance • 09:26 Salt vs. Sugar Addiction & Cravings Control • 28:30 Importance of Magnesium, Potassium, and Glycine in Hydration • 29:26 Optimal Protein Intake for Muscle Growth and Recovery • 36:00 Boosting Blood Volume: The Secret to Energy & Endurance44:44 Interview 2: Dr. James on the Powerful Health Secrets of Minerals • 46:24 Breaking Free from Sugar & Carb Cravings with Sodium • 53:27 Solving “Salt Sensitivity” by Reducing Refined Carbs • 55:01 Salt and Blood Pressure: The Carb Connection • 1:02:11 Understanding Electrolytes: Sodium, Magnesium, Potassium • 1:03:28 Dr. James's Recommended Mineral-Rich Water • 1:10:00 The Critical Role of Magnesium in Cellular Energy (ATP)01:33:53 Interview 3: Dr. James on a Deep Dive Into Weight Loss with Salt • 1:34:33 How Salt Regulates Hunger & Fat Storage Hormones • 1:35:37 Reducing Sugar Addiction Through Proper Salt Intake • 1:36:27 “Zero Hunger Water” – A Powerful Appetite Suppressant • 1:37:10 Historical Significance of Salt in Human Diet • 2:01:00 Fasting & Salt: Clearing up Common Myths • 2:02:30 How Salt Supports Autophagy and Immunity During Fasting02:21:51 Interview 4: Dr. James on Why Sodium Will Give You Radical Control of Your Health • 2:24:50 The Origin Story Behind “The Salt Fix” • 2:26:36 How Experts Misunderstood and Demonized Salt • 2:50:26 The Stress Response Triggered by Low Salt Diets • 2:51:56 Finding the Optimal Salt Intake (3–5 grams daily) • 2:57:28 The Surprising Link Between Salt Intake and Longevity • 3:00:00 Practical Recommendations for Ideal Sodium Consumption

I appreciate the time today. **Michelle Oravitz:** Yes, I'm very excited to talk about what we are going to discuss, which is glutathione. But before we get to that, I would love to get your backstory and how you got into the work that you're doing today. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Oh my god, absolutely. So start off as a pharmacist, as a career as a pharmacist, and after graduation [00:02:00] from pharmacy school. In Southern California, we were, we were trained to take care of the patient's needs and medications. And very quickly I realized that the medications we have at that time were actually not solving any problem. They were just maintaining people's problems. And very, very early on, you know, you have an aha moment in your life. That oh my god, what what did I just do right? Oh, I'm just not solving any problems So I had to turn my career to a completely different angle no former educations in in making medications or doing compounding or customizing medications that dive into the that practice and 25 years later here we are today and looking back at that and said, what a journey, what a turning point I had, because it shaped me for who I am today. I had the privilege of making medications and design treatment plans and drug plans for so many individuals helping them in their health and wellness journey. And then all [00:03:00] roads led to me to a discovery of a novel technology that can deliver glutathione. And it all started because I was just curious to find out how we can help people solve their own problems instead of trying to figure out medications to solve the problems. Right? Even though glutathione is not a, it's, it's something that body produces internally we're using it as a supplement today, but. And overall my goal was not to do anything and just enhance the body's own ability to to defend itself. And so here we are today it's a very interesting career for me for sure. **Michelle Oravitz:** For  sure. And first of all, just for people listening that don't really know much about glutathione, I'd love for you to share really what it is and also why it could be so challenging to supplement with. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Absolutely. so the glutathione in a nutshell Is three amino acids coming together in a single chain. It's a one of the smallest form of peptides we have You two amino acid chains, three amino [00:04:00] acid chains, four, five, 30, 40, 50, and thousands of the chains as well. The simplest form, of course, is glutathione, which is about three amino acids coming together. It's by far the most abundant molecule produced in the human body. And if that's produced so much, we ought to know what it's supposed to do for us. And so that's what my research came back for 140 years that we have known about glutathione. Nobody's ever figured out how to actually get inside your body. And so, 60 years ago, 70 years ago, we had a medication approved by FDA to enhance glutathione level. And as of today, that is the only medication that has been approved ever. In the whole, in the whole world, which is N acetylcysteine, which is one of the amino acids that's been used to produce chlorothione. And that's the only thing that has been available for the last 60, 70 years. **Michelle Oravitz:** So let's talk about what so we definitely, that's one of the things that um, I've been doing for egg health and also sperm [00:05:00] quality, cause it's such a high potent antioxidant. And one of the things that I have always suggested is N acetylcysteine because that's the precursor and we knew that that was like the one way that the body was able to produce it. Okay. Thank you. But then there were some supplements that still supplement with glutathione, liposomal, like different ways, which I know are not really shelf stable. So there's always been challenges with that, but before we continue on with that, I'd love for people to hear, like, what glutathione can benefit, how it can benefit the body. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** So, I understand your audience is interested more in the fertility side of the whole thing. So, you're dealing with rather younger individuals overall which is a good sign because younger patients have, everything at their disposal for the body to respond to even the smallest amount of nutrients that they receive. If the same amount of nutrients is given to an 85 year old person, they're not [00:06:00] going to feel anything, right? But if 20 year old person gets a small amount of good nutrition, they respond very, very well. And so I want to make sure that people understand that **Michelle Oravitz:** And also just to kind of mention um, sometimes we have 40 year olds too, that are trying to conceive or like trying to do IVF. So just kind of like, yeah, the whole, **Dr. Nayan Patel:** They're still spring chicken to **Michelle Oravitz:** okay. Okay. It's good for them to hear that. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** I mean, I've helped people in the very, I mean, in the late forties to get babies as well. So it's not something that's not doable. It's just gets incredibly hard after the age of 40. So it's, not that easy to do so, but the glutathione has multiple properties and understanding what glutathione does is, monument in over. in our therapies because with the two things that we do know is it's the ability for glutathione as an antioxidant to detoxify, neutralize all the free radicals in your body. But the second component is also help you detoxify by conjugating [00:07:00] inside your liver with metabolites and chemicals binding to them. So we can basically get rid of it from from your body. So the two functions that we do know That exists today. There's a lot more research still existing that we need to do. So we, we still are urging researchers to go back and use this new technology product and see if we can find out more things that glutathione can do for us. So one two the sperm or the egg quality is dependent on how your body is able to neutralize those free radicals. Those free radicals are actually toxic to all the embryonic membranes and embryos itself and the quality of the sperm and the egg itself. And neutralizing those free radical of body, there's three ways to do that part. One, you take outside products like vitamin C, and vitamin E, and CoQ10, and and C60s, and I mean, methylene blues, I mean, there's a slew of products that says, oh, we are so called antioxidants, right? So that's [00:08:00] category one. The category two of the products are produced endogenously inside your body are enzymes like catalase, supra oxide, puase, SOD, for short glutathione peroxidase, or GPX for short. So these are the enzymes that the body produces to deal with the oxidative stress or the free radicals. Okay, so those are the category one are the category two. The third category is only one product, which is glutathione. And if you look at it, the body produces so much of glutathione, and the effects of glutathione is so powerful, that if you combine the category one, which is all the antioxidants from outside sources, and the enzymes that your body produces, those two combine, Glutathione can surpass the antioxidant properties. And so I want listeners to understand very carefully is that the glutathione needs to be a basic cornerstone in everybody's arsenal. Every medicine chest in the world should have a [00:09:00] bottle says glutathione And in that bottle either you have a product or it have a note saying that eat healthy food to Let your body produce its own glutathione Either way that note has to be there on every medicine chest out there and you're right There's so much noise out there I want to cut to the noise today because if you just put your favorite search engine or your ai robot is going to tell you hey glirathion, there are a thousand different products out there. Choose one You Right. And as a consumer it's very hard to find out what to choose correctly and people hide behind a great technologies that that exists in the world and said, Oh, my, my product uses this technology. So it's the best one in the world. And you mentioned liposome technology, by the way, I just will let, you know, we were one of the very first few people that actually use liposome to produce the first liposomal glutathione. This was 25 plus years ago, right? And we made the liposome because at that time that was the [00:10:00] best technology that existed in the pharmaceutical world. And the doctor that owned the patents for those came to me and said, Hey, we've been very successful in making this for medications. Can you help me make nutraceuticals with it? Like vitamin C and CoQ10 and PQQ and S Xanthine and Glutathione and so on and so forth. And so we made the products for that doctor. And then a couple of years later. Some work, some did not work. Gluten was one of the products that did not work. So I go back and says, why is that working on everybody? The question I always ask is, hey, it helped my girlfriend. How come it's not helping me? Or it helped my sister. Why, how come it's not helping me? What, what, what am I, how am I different than the other human beings? and in reality, only your face is different. Internally, we are identical. A body has the same heart, the same organs, everything is the same, right? So we have not changed for the last 40, 000 plus years, [00:11:00] how to expect that I'm different than my sister, or I'm different than my girlfriend, or whatever, right? Maybe your genomic mixture is different, but your overall organs and organ systems are identical. And so to me, I said, okay, if it works in one person, it should work on everybody. If I get absorption in one person, I guess you should get absorption in everybody. What's the rate limiting factor? Why is it not happening? And so I didn't have answers at that time. I did not know what to do. So next story is that, okay, you know what? I'll make the intravenous form of glutathione. Hey, if I inject him into the bloodstream, my job's done. Again, took me a few months to figure that portion out how to make that part. And yes, This is long story short, we were Well, again, we were one of the first company pharmacy early on in 2001 to make the injectable form of glutathione. Now, very quickly, we realized that the effects of this glutathione was very short, right? And then I looked back in the research and said, there was a study done in 1991 [00:12:00] saying that if once you inject glutathione, it only stays in the body for between four It takes five to 15 minutes and everything gets destroyed or gets, get, get, it gets into the urine and you pee it out, but an hour and a half later, there was an increase of cysteine, which is one of the amino acids that went up in the blood. And so the researchers concluded that the body was breaking down this glutathione and cysteine was getting reabsorbed by the body and cysteine is being used for your body to produce its own glutathione. I said, okay, I don't care how the body makes it. As long as the body has a gluten, I don't care. But the results were very short lived. And I don't know if you know this thing, but back in early 2000s, one of the doctors came to me. I said, Hey, if it's short lived, that's okay. Let me take you to Vegas because when people drink, they deplete their glutathione levels. If it only stays for 15 minutes, I can revive somebody who's passed out drunk of their minds and I can get them. So. He literally took this product to Vegas and [00:13:00] start helping patients. I read scripts for those kinds of things. And again, I have nothing to do with it. I, unfortunately, I was just the supplier and I was just the maker of the product, but we saved so many lives. We helped so many people, but we were, we learned one thing that the action was not long term. And if I want the long term benefits, because if it's one of your patient, if it's one of your listener, who's, who's trying to get pregnant she, or he has to plan for A 30 day cycle, not a 15 minute. Give me some push right now and I'll be done. No, it's a 30 day cycle. You have to plan everything methodically, right? What am I supposed to do from day one to day seven and from day seven to day 14. And after ovulation, what do I do? And after post ovulation, if there's an embryo implantation, what do I do? And so on and so forth. It's a, it's a whole process and your body needs to be clean this whole time. And none of the products were actually getting the results I was looking for. Later on, I found out, this was 2011 [00:14:00] University of Texas in Austin did a study on the liposome technology product of glirathione. And what they found out was same thing that they saw in intravenous form. The body actually breaks down the glirathione, never absorbs a single molecule of it. Absorbs the cysteine and cysteine is later used to produce his own glutathione. And the end story is, it still works. It still works. But people need to understand, just because it works, it does not mean your body absorbed it. And there's a there's a difference between that one and maybe some people may not appreciate that part But I do appreciate that part because in my case i'm dealing with thousands of patients across the country across the globe now And I want to make sure that I want to give assurance to everybody that hey if I give you a glutathione product No matter what it is going to get inside your body [00:15:00] and absorb it And so the liposome technology product was great until now People got a lot of people got results for almost 80 got results from it but not because it absorbs it because the body was able to Conjugate or take the cysteine and make its own glirathione today Today the things have changed now. Why? because 15 20 years ago We started doing gene testing gene snips You Right at that time it was nobody can afford it. I was fifteen twenty thousand dollars for a blood test Oh gosh, no, nobody can afford that today Same test is 200 bucks 300 bucks, **Michelle Oravitz:** Right.  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** right? So now what's happened is that now everybody's doing these gene testings And finally got hey, do I have gene mutation where my body cannot produce gluothione if the answer is yes Then I don't care how much product you take from outside sources, the body is not [00:16:00] able to effectively produce glutathione correctly all the time. And so that to me is one more proof, one more proof that we need a product that your body can actually accept it, incorporate into their own DNA and use it when it needs to. Anyways, I just went off too many tangents no, Thanks very much, interesting. I want you to continue. So how did you find out and, and like how did you discover the product that you have now and what kind of technology does it use and how does it really impact the body? Absolutely. Those **Michelle Oravitz:** nerd in me wants to know **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Yeah. All great, great questions. And I want to, I really want to be an open book. I don't want to hide any information from anybody so that I'll be more than happy to open it up and let everybody know. So earlier when I first started the book. So we had a, we had a couple of barriers. One, what we knew was the body's not going to take any peptides, any amino acid chains to get it to and incorporate it into their own DNA. [00:17:00] What we, what I found out was the body has to make 100 percent of all peptides in the body, the body has to make it. Right. So we knew that I knew that part very early on. So I said, okay, there is no way on earth I'll be able to make a product that your body can use it up. Okay, so now I had to figure out Okay, how do I get this simple tripeptide three amino acid chain peptides into the body? So I first of all, I want to do, I want to create a stable molecule because if I have a stable molecule in my lab, I can work with it. If it's unstable, I don't have time to really experiment on it, right? So my first goal was to make a stable molecule. So that we achieved pretty fast. It took us a couple of years when we got the stable molecule. We took it by mouth. Again what we saw was Sistine went up, so it was not working really, it was getting broken down. We scored into the nose, I said, and if the nose was burning, I said, oh, nobody's going to use this on a daily basis. Of course not, right? It's not a, it's not a fun thing to do. I knew the [00:18:00] injectables was a little bit of an uphill battle because it requires FD approval and all those things. I said, you know what? The only route that was remaining was skin route. And of course, skin is a physical barrier, right? So it's a physical barrier that I have to overcome. And the physical barrier is, is a particle size barrier. So I had to reduce the particle size so small, It can get through the cracks or the pores of your skin and get inside your body. So that was the first challenge I had, which we were able to crack the code in about a couple of years. We had to take this peptides, twist it in such a form that doesn't get broken apart and gets a small, you know, like when you twist the towel, you know how it gets smaller and smaller and smaller, but you twist enough, it can get really small. And so that's what we did with this molecule. It forces microscopically, and we were able to reduce the particle size to much smaller. We got to the skin. The bigger challenge is this glutathione is inside your cells. So now the issue is that, [00:19:00] okay, we release a particle size, we get through your skin. Now, so the physical barrier, we, we all work in the physical barrier. The second was a chemical barrier. Because the cell wall is a lock and key. Hey, you say the magic word and the castle opens up and you can go inside. But if you don't say the magic word, the castle will never open for you. So the question then becomes is that what does the body needs? What does the cell needs to survive? All your mitochondria, the energy powerhouse in your body is in the cells, right? And that to produce the energy, what you need is carbohydrates and sugars. I cannot give you sugars because I give you diabetes and we already have an epidemic of diabetes in the United States across the world nowadays so I said, okay, how do I get a polysaccharide sugar type molecule? That doesn't doesn't do anything about the sugar is completely inert FDA has tested it out and it's completely safe to give to anybody pregnancy no pregnancy children's everybody And can I use that molecule? So we found [00:20:00] dextrin technology. This was a technology that has been out for about 20, 30 years now, but there are no good medications in the world. As even in today's state, there's not too many medications out there. People are still dabbling around. those technology products. And so we use the technology to literally, instead of working with medications, we start working with glutathione. We do the sugar molecule and stuff inside with glutathione. It's like, do you need M& Ms? Do you need **Michelle Oravitz:** No, not anymore,  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Not anymore,  Okay, Good. Good. Do you, do you eat M& Ms for the peanuts or for the chocolate? **Michelle Oravitz:** I guess well, I used to like the chocolate ones when I was really, really little. And then later on peanuts, **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Exactly. But the thing is, you don't eat M& Ms for peanuts, you eat M& Ms for the chocolate. But the peanut inside, if you get a peanut, do you spit it out? Or you know what? It's not so bad. I can use it up. **Michelle Oravitz:** It's like I compare it to like, you know, the being able to take those pill things for your dogs where you put it inside a treat and get the dog to eat it. And[00:21:00]  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** That's exactly right, right? So I took the carbohydrate, the sugar molecule, stuffed the glutathione inside, you know, so the body, when the carbohydrate hits the cell wall, the cell goes, oh, I can use this up. Right? And sucks it in. Inside is glutathione. But he goes, well, I can use this up too. It's not something new to me, so I can use this up too. Right? And so now, it's like you somebody tells you that, hey, I have a billion dollar coming to you, but it's coming in the mail. Well, that's not helping me right now, but if it hits my wallet, gosh, I can spend it today. Right? So, you can check the mail, it's in a transit, but until it hits the wallet, you cannot do anything about it. Saving glutathione, if the glutathione is in your body, but it's not inside your cell, the, the cell says that, okay, I need the glutathione, but it's way out there. It's not in my cell. I cannot use it up. Here we got inside the cell directly. [00:22:00] When we did that part, like magic just happened. All of a sudden, the body has a product. The body needs it. The money's in the wallet right now. I can go spend it today. And the body can actually use the glutathione immediately To start doing what? Two things that we know of as of right now. One is start neutralizing all the free radicals. That's number one. Number two, start getting my liver cleaned up and start detoxifying all this, all this metabolism in my system. When you do those things up, all of a sudden your whole body or your temple, your, your the sanctuary in your body starts getting healed from inside, starts getting cleaner. And all of a sudden the, main thing, which is our sperm and the eggs. Are not been invaded or not been attacked by this toxic chemicals. **Michelle Oravitz:** Right? **Dr. Nayan Patel:** And so that's, there's, there's my technology. We discovered this in 2007, as you can imagine 2007 it was too far [00:23:00] ahead of the game. There was nothing in the world that exists something even close to this thing. And so there was no studies being done. There's no research articles published. There's nothing out there in the world that I can fall back and say, Hey, go ahead and use it safe. **Michelle Oravitz:** Yeah.  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** do that part. So it took me another 13, 14 more years to literally do everything that I can do on my own. I have no funding. I did everything on my own. I put every single thing I have back into this to basically research it out. Apply for the patents, all my work that I did. I, in fact, I published a book about three, four years ago. All the work I did for the first 13 years, I put in a book. I said, Hey. Guys, here's read it, right? This is this is all my work and it's just success stories that I've given to patients and clients and And found friends and family that uses product and and see how how much benefit they got in different areas of life right if you're an athlete versus if you have metabolic disorders versus you have [00:24:00] metabolism, defects if you're on the spectrum because spectrum patients have some sort of Metabolism issues of detoxification issues that they cannot clear the toxins out of the body And they are the autism or aspergers or whatever they got right? So i've all the stories and I have some stories about horses and and dogs and how how they it helped them as well in their in their wellness, thing as well as anyways So that's all the stories in the book the glutton revolution. That's my book. But after everything got done We had a pandemic **Michelle Oravitz:** Right. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** the product was not even released yet You And the pandemic comes around and I've been begged by all the doctors around the country. I said, oh my god Please give us the access to the glutathione because I was working with doctors So they knew about this product, but none of the consumers knew knew about it And so that's when we actually did a soft launch. We didn't have a bottling. We didn't have a boxing. We have nothing at that time No website, we had a website, but it was like a nothing nothing crazy So 2021 [00:25:00] was the first launch of the product now we are here today, but, so anyways, so thanks for asking me this question, but I just wanna make sure the story **Michelle Oravitz:** Yeah, no, I love the story because I think also I have very, very smart listeners, I'll be honest, like with a fertility journey, they are so educated. You know, it's such a motivator to really educate yourself. And a lot of times if I work with people in person online, I see the most educated people, they really know a lot. So I wanted to kind of have a background to really explain how the process works. Cause I feel like it's very empowering for them. And the two things that I know, like an N acetylcysteine. So that works as a precursor to get the cysteine. And then from that gets the body to produce glutathione. And then your product works through the skin and then is enveloped by the carbohydrates, right. Or the yeah,  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** is, it, it's, it's a polysaccharides is what we call 'em. And it's embedded inside that one. It's the, analogy I can [00:26:00] give you is that, hey if you need money, there's two ways to get money. One is I'll give you a job. You work at it. And you, you share your trades and then for the reward, I'll give you money. The second part is here's the money in your wallet. I'm not going to give you too much of it. I'm just going to give you enough to survive the rest. You still have to go make it yourself. Right. And so the second part, I give you enough to survive. Your body says to make the rest of the glutathione from the foods you eat and things like that. but a lot of people need, just need a little edge over everybody else. So I just give them extra glutathione to make sure that they are able to use up right now, because when you have a problem today, if you need the money today, and if you give you a job, I said, that's good, but I need the money now. I don't need money two weeks from now.  **Michelle Oravitz:** Yeah.  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** And so that makes it very, very useful. And in, in certain cases, I'm not saying that is good for everybody. What I am saying that is good for everybody, but the product may not be good for everybody,[00:27:00]  but having a healthier lifestyle, having the cysteine rich diet. Is absolutely a must I don't care what what age you are, right? That is absolutely a must So if you do that, if you have a healthy lifestyle, that means avoid the toxins that depletes the glutathione levels Having the diet that consumes that gives all the amino acids those two things combined Will will give you a fighting chance for long periods of time where you don't need any supplementations The supplementation is very good for people that need extra help or temporarily And then once your body gets under control then you can stop it, too **Michelle Oravitz:** Yeah. And then, so the couple of questions that come to my mind is you know, I'm, I'm a, also a big believer, obviously it sounds like it's doing something, but I'm also a big believer that like nature has a very a method for its madness. And I'm wondering, is there a reason why it's under such lock to allow um, glutathione in by itself, rather than having the body produce it? It was just [00:28:00] kind of like something that came to my mind.  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** know.  **Michelle Oravitz:** you were mentioning that. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** and you're right. I mean, the body is, is equipped to deal with, because any peptides that you, that the body can accept from outside sources can actually get embedded into your DNA. And so having the purity, what if you give somebody else's DNA inside your body? **Michelle Oravitz:** Right. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Wow. Right. Think about it. Think about it. You're injecting somebody else's DNA. Some, some of the protein from something else that is not made by humans. The body is going to start going to cycle, react to it and say, Oh my God, what if well, we have vaccines right nowadays. What are the vaccines are proteins by outside of viruses, right? How about we use those embedded into our own DNA? So that's the, that's a scary part to me. And so that's the reason why a body does not allow anything from outside sources to get inside your body. It's very [00:29:00] very protective. Glutathione we do know is produced endogenously. It's inside your body, making sure that the glutathione the raw materials that we use Is of the highest highest quality. I would say 99. 99 percent pure is what we need. Otherwise, we just going to have a chance of making sure we have a chance that we can harm our body. And so just so for when I, when I first heard that in 2007, I quickly, I realized that I have to bring manufacturing in house. I can't trust anybody to do this for me. It literally took me eight years to build my own plant out small plant But just enough so that I can control every single thing making sure the water that I use is the highest quality Everything that goes inside is for the highest quality products. That's why I had to Ensure that so I brought everything in house. It was too costly to make it It's still too costly to make it and to [00:30:00] reduce the cost. I had to make sure that I I am, I'm going straight from the manufacturers to the consumers and there's no too many middlemen in between to reduce the cost down. And so we've been doing whatever it takes and you're right. The by doesn't take it. So having that technology to bypass this is somehow empowering that we can do that part. But it's scary is that we can use the same technology to, to hurt somebody too. **Michelle Oravitz:** Mm hmm. Yeah. Yeah. For sure. And thank you for answering that. And also, my question is, what have you seen in the research? Like, what have you seen short term, long term, because you, it sounds like you guys have been working with us for a long time, in the response of people's bodies and conditions. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Absolutely. So just FYI of a human body gets everything gets, gets redone every 30, 60, 90 to 120 days. That means you get new cells in your bodies all the time.[00:31:00]  The body is constantly constantly making new cells, better cells so that you can rejuvenate yourself from inside out, right? So the body is, it's like you're having a house, constantly remodeling your house from inside all the time, right? So no matter what happens, if I make a hole in the wall, you know what, a few months from now it'll be a brand new wall again. I don't have to do anything, just have to wait and don't make it further damage the wall, right? And it'll be repaired by itself. So the body repairs itself. The issue is that. The glutathione can actually improve the repair process to the point where it repairs better. And you can feel the effects much, much faster. Now certain organs take them 12 to 18 months to repair. For example, liver, it takes a long time to repair. So, any, if you're looking for benefits for liver health that may take anywhere from 12 to 18 months. Even though if I have doctors I work with all the time and the doctor says, Oh, my, the liver function tests are coming normal. I said, just because the tests have [00:32:00] no, that doesn't mean the liver is normal, right? I guess you're right. Absolutely right. So they do ultrasounds. They do scans and things like that to figure that portion out. But again, it takes them 12 to 18 months to fix it. At a short term people when they have have issues with oxidative stress. The biggest issue I've seen is these are, these are people that have some gene mutations that cannot produce, they cannot conjugate and make enough glutathione. They have this brain fog that has been lingering on for decades, decades, right? For 10, 20 years sometimes. Of course, these are older people. These are not 20 year olds. And so they've been struggling and All of a sudden, they use a gluotide and about 15 minutes later, they can just see the, just brain just opens up. Now, it is not a, it's not a something to improve your memory. It's not this magic pill that you see in the movies. It's here, one pill, my brain just fires up and I'm, I can think and I can do anything I want to do. It's not that pill, it's a **Michelle Oravitz:** but I'm sure it can prevent things like Alzheimer's or things like that. Mm hmm, [00:33:00] mm **Dr. Nayan Patel:** well, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and things like that as well. But in the short term, when people see the brain fog clears up, all it's doing is reducing oxidative stress. **Michelle Oravitz:** hmm. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** If you need to reduce oxidative stress, so I've seen results as much as 5 to 15 minutes. Up to two to four weeks in most individual And two three to six months in I would say 99 of the people they see some improvement in their health and wellness and they're most of them are working with the physicians So they're doing some blood tests before and after the doctors are saying what the heck you're doing I don't know what you're doing, but keep on doing it. It's very good for you. So  **Michelle Oravitz:** That's really interesting. And then also, if you were to get, you know, outside source of glutathione, the body feels the glutathione, will it make an impact on the body's own production of glutathione now that it feels that it has more. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Absolutely. And the thing is [00:34:00] the the biggest concern that people have that hey What if if I take glutathione from outside sources with my body shut down his own production? And yes and no, I think the body probably may reduce the production, it probably will not shut it down because keep in mind when we're comparing, because most people have been burned by, hey, if you take steroids, your body will, it'll blow up like a balloon and because the body is not able to make its own regular, its own steroid production, which is true, which is 100 percent true. endocrine system is tightly regulated from your gonadal hormones, your pituitary and your ovaries and your testes and to the brain, which is the pituitary the hypothalamus, right? So they both work together, your brain tells your ovaries to produce the hormones, the ovaries produce the hormones, the ovaries cannot produce the hormones, The brain is going to keep on sending signals. Can you do more? Do more? Do more? Because I can't do anymore. I'm already tired. I'm burnt out. I'm just, I'm shriveled up. I can't do anymore. Right? Versus if you [00:35:00] take a hormone from outside sources, it affects straight to the pituitary. And the pituitaries will shut down and say, Hey, no more producing hormones. You got too much. I don't know where it's coming from,  but  **Michelle Oravitz:** like a thermostat,  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Right? It's a negative feedback. But when it comes to glutathione, glutathione is not triggered by any brain or hypothalamus. Glutathione is taking three amino acids together, two enzymes, two molecules of ATP, which is energy, and one molecule of NAD for electron transfer. All this to come together to make glutathione. Right? Now this same energy, ATP energy, NAD energy is being used in thousands of chemical reactions that happens every single day. So keep in mind, if your body does not have to produce glutathione, your energy is never wasted. It's used to do other reactions all day long. But the good thing is that glutathione is by far the most abundant molecule produced in the human body. [00:36:00] And after a couple of weeks or so, the body is saying, hey, everything is not working great. Now for two weeks later you see some increasing energy because now the energy is is Getting excess and your body goes. Oh my god. I have excess energy now all of a sudden. It's not a car It's not a caffeine type energy It's not like jumping up and down type of energy, but you do feel good from inside out Right. You do feel good. And all of a sudden you pick up other habits, walking, jogging, cycling, you know, or just going out and just, you just have this, this energy inside your body that you want to do other things. You just feel alive from inside. And so, and then when you stop the glutathione, the body says, okay, oh, should we have, we need more glutathione. So the first energy goes towards producing glutathione, but if you have enough glutathione, that energy has been used to produce other peptides. Keep in mind, a muscle needs what? 6, 100 amino acids coming together. Takes a lot of energy to produce muscle fiber. So if you're not [00:37:00] using the energy to produce glutathione, hey, hopefully it goes to producing more muscle mass. I'm hoping for that. **Michelle Oravitz:** Yeah. . And is there like a limit on how long you should take it? you know, is there a limit that you have? **Dr. Nayan Patel:** So, I do know that your body needs glutathione until the last day you die. So, until that day, you have to take it. After you're dead, I'm not sure if your body needs glutathione or not. So, that's a joke. I'm sorry. But your body needs glutathione to survive. Every single day. So the needs are going to be the endless. the better question to me is that do I need to supplement every single day of my life? That's a way better question for me to answer is to that that question came to me in my mind long time ago as well. And so what I have found out is that the body needs glutathione. to survive. Your body has the ability to produce glutathione, plenty of it on a daily basis. And what I found in [00:38:00] my research that up until about the age of 30, there is no need for any supplementation. None. Improve your diet, reduce your exposure to toxicities. You should be fine. **Michelle Oravitz:** Right?  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Between 32, 35, if you have a healthier lifestyle, don't drink alcohol. Don't expose yourself to heavy levels of toxicities. Don't do sunbathing a whole lot. And having a very clean diet, you might still be okay. 35 to 40, I would say 80, 90 percent of the people may need to supplement gluathione, over 40, I have yet to find somebody who has normal levels of gluathione and so the question that I ask is, Hey, what's Well, my mom in the fifties and sixties never had to use a gluathide, and she lived for long periods of time, so why is it today, right? But keep in mind, at that time, sixty years ago, maybe the world population was three billion, now we are eight billion population. And who are the biggest polluters in the world? Is it the [00:39:00] animals or the humans? **Michelle Oravitz:** Humans. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Humans. Animals don't even wear clothing. They don't even do anything. They don't have to build any houses and, and destroy the world. They just live, enjoy the world and leave the world the way it was when they came in. Us humans wants to fly, wants to build a hundred story buildings and wants to drive cars and wants to do all kinds of things. So we are the biggest polluters and the pollution has literally what more than doubled in the last 60 years. So if we say that the, the modernist society is polluted, the answer is absolutely yes. And it's not, it's not like we are turning the tables and we're going on the other way around. So like it or not, nobody's willing to give the modern day conveniences at this point. They don't, they're not going to do that part. So the question is that yes, Maybe my mom did not need gluten until the age of 50 or 60 [00:40:00] maybe. That's dropped down to 30, 35 or 40 at this point. And I'm scared for my kids because they may need glutathione at the age of 25 That's that's not a good thing to do, but it's just just telling us that our memory is getting more and more polluted and we need to figure out every single thing that we can do to enhance our body to stay clean from inside. **Michelle Oravitz:** And is there a benefit to taking N acetylcysteine as well as the, the skin,  um, supplementation?  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** okay, so NAC or cysteine so there are about eight essential amino acids that you have to take every single day Cysteine is not one of them Cysteine, Glycerine, and Glycine. Those are the three amino acids that's used to produce glutathione. Those three are not even in the part of the eight essential amino acids. So if you take cysteine and the glutathione topical version that we have, the cysteine is not going to be used up to produce glutathione at all. It may be used up for some other components, but not for [00:41:00] glutathione. I would suggest that if you're doing that part, then save your money and just improve your diet, right? If you have the money, I would rather you invest in those eight essential amino acids. Those are much better to do that, like Lucid and Proline. And so those are much more better to for you to use it on a daily basis. I'd rather you spend the money on that than to spend the money on the SysTeam. **Michelle Oravitz:** Got it. And then what are some of the foods and, that you would recommend for the glutathione diet? **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Michelle, I've been told not to advise people on diet **Michelle Oravitz:** Okay. Thank you **Dr. Nayan Patel:** is worse than the religion and politics. So I'm going to tell you one thing. All right. So everybody has a, has an AI robot. Everybody has access to AI robot. Go type it up.  Sistine rich foods. **Michelle Oravitz:** Sistine Richards **Dr. Nayan Patel:** You're going to get your vegan choices, vegetarian choices, carnivore, [00:42:00] paleo, Atkins. I don't know what a longevity diet. I don't know. Don't die diet. I, I don't know. There's so many diets out there right there right now. All these diets are going to be satisfied if you just type in the word system food and see what food are you willing to eat and make and have a variety of foods from that list that you consume on a daily basis. Like what's in that list? I, you know, on an everyday basis, every single day.  **Michelle Oravitz:** Yeah **Dr. Nayan Patel:** in there, asparagus in there, there's oysters and chicken and turkey. And I mean, you can name it, right? There's so much stuff is in there that you can consume. It's not a small list, right? But you have to make it a part of the routine. But that's just one thing. That's just one thing. The second part, which is utmost important, is limit. Limit your exposure to toxicities, **Michelle Oravitz:** yes true [00:43:00] Oh, **Dr. Nayan Patel:** pure. Right is important and because of that guess what my technology I even dove into the skincare as well because because most of my customers were females. Well now they are like 50 50 today But at that time all my customers female and they look at the technology and say hey Can you give me all the antioxidants for my face as well? I said sure. It's that's easy, right? So I just went got all the antioxidants and I said, okay Put it squeeze the size right so I can shove a whole bunch of stuff into this couple of products And so I have like seven or eight different antioxidants in full concentration and some are even more in like two creams right And then two of the serums I give like 10x of what you what you get from any of the products in the marketplace today so I give you a vitamin c and glutathione in a very high concentration to your skin Gets your skin completely disperses really really fast and gets gets to the all the skin in your whole body And so anyways, so I did that [00:44:00]  **Michelle Oravitz:** if you do that, To your face, is that the same thing, the same technology that will get glutathione in your cells? So it's kind of like two in one? **Dr. Nayan Patel:** So it is, it is it's the same technology, but what we have to done is we have to identify the speed and how deep I want to go inside. So the skincare is more  for,  **Michelle Oravitz:** different. It's more  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** yeah, but I would always say that if you're using both that do not double up, do not double up, right? If you're using both that your skincare routine, as is the way it's been introduced to you, and then just add on the, the top of glue that just once a day. **Michelle Oravitz:** I  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** And you, and you still get the, I mean, you get full benefit. That's the ultimate Longevity hack is what I call them, right? Cause the beauty is inside out. The ultimate longevity hack is you do the full skincare routine and just do once a day of the glutathione. If you don't do the skincare routine, just the glutathione twice a day is, is, is, is what you need. That's an ultimate bio is, [00:45:00]  **Michelle Oravitz:** Oh, that's great.  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** I have. **Michelle Oravitz:** Well, listen, I mean, I'm curious. I'm sure people listening are very curious, how can we find out more? How can we buy this stuff and get ahold of it? **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Absolutely. So, my website is oral wellness. com. A U R O wellness. com. Go to the website. There is a two part on the top is skincare and wellness. Otherwise you can go to oral skincare. com as well. The same thing. My urge is that if you are any of this patients that is Not able to give up monitor conveniences or you may suspect that you may have low glutathione levels I would probably strongly suggest you try it for 30 days It is,  we do offer a hundred percent, a hundred percent money back guarantee. We don't charge shipping and handling. We'll refund you everything, right? We will, we will do full refund of everything. Cause I just want people to try it out. And once you try it for 30 days and if you see slight benefit of [00:46:00] it then it's the best thing that can happen to you for the rest of your life. It's one thing that I have, I have customers for now for 17 years, since the first we discovered this product. That will, that's like a, it's a go to product in the arsenal. It's like, it's always there. And I'll tell you, I'll give you another analogy right now, because I wanted people to really understand what this is, because as you age, your body is deteriorating, is diseased, and it is, is, is breaking down, right? It's like. You go to your, when you go to your home you leave your door open. And as soon as I leave the door open, the dust, the wind blows the leaves inside. And so what you do is you bring your vacuum out or your, or your broom out and start sweeping and guess what? There's more dust and more leaves coming out. Right? So what do you do? I'll say, Oh my God, I forgot to close the door. Once you close the door, you can literally clean the whole house from inside and make [00:47:00] it brand new again. Right? Oxidative stress, oxidative stress, production of free radicals is the opening of the door analogy in your body. Oxidative stress is not doing anything, but it's allowing every single thing to come inside your body. And destroy the body from inside and unless you block that and close it up You cannot buy your body does not heal from inside, right? So the glutathione is actually closing the door is actually closing the door and then allowing your body to what to start getting? Cleaned up from inside and start repairing itself inside So at the bare minimum at the bare minimum if you do for four months You're going to have every single day Products in your body, every single cells, organs, every single thing you're going to have allowed them the chance to [00:48:00] regenerate self. **Michelle Oravitz:** Yeah.  **Dr. Nayan Patel:** after four months, yeah, it's after four months, it's like game over. So I have people that even today's they, they said, I know what I have to do. It's just that I just keep on forgetting. I said, that's okay. You know, close the door first. You know, it's, it's no fun sweeping and wrecking your house every single day. **Michelle Oravitz:** No, no, it's not. I agree. Wow. This is amazing. Really, really fascinating information. I just love the fact that you have a background from, from ecology. I mean, that you understand it really from the inside out and that you were able to apply technology and really understand it from your perspective and that you had these ideas to create a product like that, that's really cool. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** and I, I wish I had this product when we were going through our early on in my life because my wife had a hard time conceiving and it took us nine years to have a first son. Yeah, and it's not that we were trying for nine years. It's just that [00:49:00] after marriage, it took us nine years to have the first son and we only tried for maybe about a couple of years before. And then. We did, I think we did one, one, I think two IVF cycles. And I said, this will be the last one. We'll never do it again because I know the damage it causes to the human body. And I wasn't the one suffering, but I know it was going to destroy her body for the rest of her life. So I was not willing to put up with make her go through the process, even though it was like something that is so blissful to you, right? When you have a kid. So, yeah, we did all the traditional because I was pharmacist. I knew I'll do all the hormone therapies. I did all the hormones correctly. Everything was just fine, but she just was not producing any follicles. The follicles were there, but they're not producing any eggs. I knew that it was oxygen stress, but at that time I had nolu thi product in me. And So uh, it is just so unfortunate, right? But today you have that if you are a young person that is trying to conceive you have this thing, [00:50:00] at the very least, just use it for a few months. It gives it by the chance. And and, and hopefully you have a healthy baby. That's, that's always my **Michelle Oravitz:** Yeah, that's the hope. Yes. And sending all of that good, good energy and good thoughts to everybody listening. So thank you so much, Dr. Patel for coming on. This is a great conversation. I will have all the links to the website and everything in the episode notes for people to view if they want to stop, stop the car and then go look, but thank you so much for coming on today. This is a great conversation. **Dr. Nayan Patel:** Appreciate your time today. It's my pleasure to be here today. Thank you. [00:51:00] [00:52:00]

Angela presents a bitesize in the company of Slim Land, in which they look at the profound effects of exercise on reducing inflammation and its implications for aging and chronic diseases. They discuss the distinction between acute and chronic inflammation, emphasising the importance of addressing underlying causes such as obesity and high blood sugar levels. They also highlight the role of healthy lifestyle choices, including exercise, sleep, and a diverse diet rich in plant polyphenols, in managing inflammation KEY TAKEAWAYS Chronic low-grade inflammation is a significant factor in aging and various chronic diseases. Addressing underlying causes such as obesity and high blood sugar levels can help reduce inflammation. Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to lower inflammation levels and boost the body's antioxidant defences, potentially more so than consuming antioxidant-rich foods. Consuming a diverse range of plant polyphenols and fibres from whole foods, such as berries and dark leafy greens, is beneficial for reducing inflammation and supporting overall health. Glycine and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) support glutathione production, which can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. These compounds may improve physical function and quality of life, especially in older adults. BEST MOMENTS "Chronic inflammation is pretty central to aging and all the whole chronic diseases as well." "Exercise is the most powerful way to boost your body's antioxidant defense." "I don't think that supplementation with these polyphenols is necessarily a smart idea, because they might be too potent." "Glycine has many other benefits beyond the glutathione production."  You're at the end of your rope, so you head to the pharmacy for the help you so desperately need to sleep. But wait, you aren't sure if it's safe, if it works, and if there's a better way.  Stay tuned to learn about the benefits, side effects, and risk of sleep aids.   I'm Dr.Vickie Petz Kasper. If you're ready to take control of your health, you're in the right  place. I'll give you practical steps to start your own journey toward better health because healthy looks great on you.  This is episode 159, Sleeping Pills and Potions. What works and what doesn't. You know that poor sleep is associated with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, immune dysfunction, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, fatigue, irritability, and good grief, I could go on and on. So, taking something to help you sleep sounds like a good idea, right?  Today, we'll discuss what you need to know before you go and get a prescription, supplement, or over the counter sleeping aid. Look, we have to sleep. Our very lives and health depend on it. But the struggle is real. Insomnia is one of the most common symptoms people go to the doctor or health care provider for treatment.   And what if I told you that good sleep is possible without medications? Well, it is. In fact, the first line treatment recommended to treat insomnia is not medication. The standard recommendation for managing insomnia is to eliminate things that go bump in the night and keep you awake.  Or, to treat underlying diseases that disrupt sleep. It's not recommended to start with behavioral therapy or medications until these other things are maximized. Ha! But good luck with that. If you go to your primary care provider and you don't get a prescription, I'll buy you a cup of coffee and we can both stay awake.  And, if you think you need to see a specialist, then you'll probably get to spend the night in a sleep lab hotel hooked up to a bunch of wires and you may get answers, like, a CPAP, and that's important if you have sleep apnea, but if not, you might not even hear from them. No wonder you're looking for a good solution to sleep.  And though medications are not the first line recommendation, that is the topic of today's episode. So let's get to it. We're going to start with prescription medications, then we'll talk about over the counter medications and wrap up with supplements.  There are three classes of drugs approved to treat insomnia. Benzodiazepine receptor agonist, histamine receptor antagonist, and melatonin receptor agonist. Listening to all that medical jargon may be sufficient to put you to sleep. But wait, let me explain. You'll understand more after we go to mini medical school today and learn about receptors.  These are made up of proteins and they receive chemical signals that produce a response.  Let me give you this analogy. You've got a lamp sitting on an end table, but it's not plugged in, so there's no light. And when you stick those two prongs into the socket, behold, now you can sit and read. And that's kind of how a receptor works. The plug fits into the plug in. So an agonist is like the plug. It fits. It turns it on. It lets the electricity flow.  But, if you had a toddler in the house, you might want to plug in one of those little plastic things so he doesn't stick a butter knife in there and get shocked. So that would be an antagonist.  Okay, now wake up and pay attention. We've got three classes of drugs to look at. Benzo receptor agonist and melatonin agonist. That plug in and histamine receptor antagonist that block the plugin. And then there's another category called other. We'll just call that the clapper, you know, clap, clap. And the light comes on, clap, clap, and the light goes off.  There are eight drugs in the benzodiazepine receptor agonist family. And the first five are about my age, you know, born in the 60s. They are Estazolam, which is Prosom, Florazepam, which is Dalmane, Quamazepam, which is Doral, Temazepam, which is Restoril and Triazolam, which is Halcion. Now the millennials aren't benzos, but they're still benzo receptor agonist. And you know, this generation got way more complicated spelling their kids' names, so I'm probably gonna have to sound them out like a first grade teacher on the first day of school.  Eszopiclone is Lunesta, Zaleplon is Sonata. Zolpidem is Ambien.  Those older drugs are crankier and cause more dependence although Restoril is the nicest in the category. There are other benzos which are technically prescribed for anxiety and  some people do use them to help them sleep. Do they work? Here's what the data says for the old guys. They help you fall asleep faster. A whole whopping 10 minutes faster. And they increase total sleep time by half an hour to an hour. That's it.  What about risk? Well, they make you sleepy, which is kind of the point, but also they can make you dizzy, which can make you fall if you get up and go to the bathroom during the night. And if you mix them with opioids, the reaction can be fatal.   Now, the younger guys function about as well as the older ones, but they have shorter half lives, so their effects don't wear out their welcome so much with daytime grogginess. And they aren't so deadly when socializing with opioids. But rarely, they do some bizarre things like compel you to shop or gamble in the middle of the night. All for 10 minutes faster to go to sleep and half hour to an hour longer sleeping.  Okay, clap on, clap off, let's talk about the other drugs.  These are dual orexin receptor antagonists.  Affectionately known as D O R A or Dora.  The first one is Suvarexant, which is called Belsomra. The next one is Derodorexant, which sounds a lot like deodorant to me, and that's exactly what I'm gonna call it because the brand name is Quviviq. And finally, there is Limboxerant, which has a really cool brand name, Dayvigo.  What? You've never heard of any of these? Well, that's probably because they're slightly less effective than the other drugs. They help you go to sleep seven minutes faster. But the main side effect is sleepiness, and people generally say they slept better. The next topic in pharmacology class in mini medical school is the histamine antagonist. You know, the little plastic thing that goes in the wall socket so your toddler doesn't.  Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant that functions this way, and even in low doses it causes the desirable effect of drowsiness. So, it's approved for the treatment of drowsiness deficit.  Unfortunately, there are some drugs it doesn't play nice with. But, it does increase sleep time by Drum roll please! 25 to 30 minutes. Womp, womp, womp. And, it helps people stay asleep toward the end of the sleep cycle.    And I think this underscores why one size does not fit all and prescriptions should be customized for individual needs.  The last class of drugs approved for the treatment of insomnia makes a lot of sense.  Ramelteon is a melatonin receptor agonist and the brand name Rosarem, get it? REM, R E M, as in rapid eye movement sleep. It's got a good mechanism of action, a good name. Problem is, it doesn't work any better than placebo. So, you can skip the potential for fatigue, nausea, and worsening of liver disease and just take a sugar pill.  So, am I saying it doesn't work at all? Of course not. Why would it be approved if it didn't work? Well, it's not in Europe, but it does work to lengthen sleep time by a grand total of seven minutes. And I don't know about you, but it's going to take more than seven minutes to get rid of the bags under these eyes.  So that's the gamut of drugs approved for the treatment of insomnia in the United States. But wait, there's more. Just because the FDA doesn't approve something for a particular indication, that doesn't mean that doctors can't prescribe it. And sometimes, off label prescribing is a really good thing, though it's a set up for a knock down, drag out fight with your insurance company for coverage. In addition to using the antidepressant Doxepin, many doctors prescribe other antidepressants for sleep. Things like Amitriptyline and Trazodone, even though the American Academy of Sleep Medicine advises against it because of side effects and no data showing that it works. Now, I always recommend that you consult with your health care provider regarding your medications. Always, always, always.  But, I also recommend that they consult with up to date society recommendations and guidelines. That's just fair. And while they're at it, they should look at the potential adverse reactions. So, now maybe you've decided to skip the copay and just help yourself to the sleep aid aisle of the pharmacy. You could even ask the pharmacist to guide you, and I recommend that. There are two over the counter medications approved to treat insomnia. They are diphenhydramine, commonly known as Benadryl, and doxalamine, commonly known as Unisom. Side note, over the counter medications are regulated  FDA, And both of these drugs are histamine blockers. Therefore, all of the fun side effects that come with that, like dry mouth, GI distress, dizziness, trouble emptying your bladder, and of course, sedation, which is the desired side effect. These medications are often combined with things like Advil or Tylenol with an added P. M. at the end, so you know what's in store for you. And here's what's in store for diphenhydramine. 8 less minutes to fall asleep and 12 more minutes of sleep. And for doxylamine, there's no data available. That's it. That's what we've got. So, maybe now you've decided just to take matters into your own hands and look for a supplement. And because you've listened to my previous podcast episode about dementia, you're gonna skip right over the Prevagen, right? Promise me. Now, in the supplement section, you're going to walk in understanding that claims, concentrations, and ingredients are not guaranteed. They're not regulated. They are, generally speaking, considered safe and ineffective. You heard that right. Safe. And ineffective. But what about melatonin? You swear it works, but does it?  Maybe. It is sedating in about 10 percent of people and in everyone else, it shifts the sleep phase. So, there is a place for that such as jet lag, and I have an episode on jet lag in the show notes.  But even though it may help you drift off to sleep, it probably isn't going to help you stay asleep. The half life is less than an hour, and in some people it causes stomach cramps, irritability, and even depression. It's best used in combination with other things that regulate your circadian rhythm. More to come on that. But a big one is light. And so this probably would be a great time to tell you about some exciting news I have for you. I have an upcoming series of live webinars to talk about six hidden things that keep you tossing and turning at night.   And soon you'll have access to an online course called Unlock the Secret to Sleep, your personal sleep solution. I have been working so hard on this for so long that I cannot wait to share it with you.  I want to help you reset your sleep and get your Z's. Now there are other supplements labeled as sleep aids and most of them again are safe and probably not effective. The exceptions on safety are kava and valerian root. Both of those have been associated with liver damage. Now it's rare, but it's very serious. Other things you might find on this aisle are chamomile, Glycine, Gryphonia, Hops,  , Kava, L theanine, Lavender, , Passionflower, Nightshade, Skullcap, Strymonium, Tryptophan, , and Wild Jujube Seeds.  They're all equally effective and work every bit as well as a sugar pill, but hey, sugar pills can have powerful placebo effects. And one last thing I want to mention, and that is cannabis. Bottom line is there's not enough research to say one way or another, whether it works. It does have the potential for addiction and it's not legal everywhere. So there's that.  But also it's a problem that if you quit, you'll likely experience sleep disturbances that can last for several months.     The bottom line is, I want you to know that you shouldn't have to choose between serious health consequences of poor sleep and the side effects and risk of sleeping pills and potions.  If you suffer from insomnia, I do encourage you not to stop any medications without medical supervision and to have an honest conversation with your doctor. And if they want access to my resources, just give them my email address. I'm happy to share and they're 100 percent legit, but if good sleep eludes you, I want you to know while there's no magic pill for perfect sleep, there is a proven path to natural, restorative rest that can transform your life. Glycine. Cognitive performance/stress: Theanine: supports mental clarity and relaxation, helps with stress and sleep.  Ashwaghanda & adaptogens (rhodiola, ginseng) Lions Mane Mushroom Joints/inflammation: Curcumin (turmeric): go for supplement with lots of curcuminoids, not just a ginger or turmeric supplement.  Glucosamine/chondroitin/msm: most backed by research for reducing joint pain - should be taken together for best results.  Bonus: gut health. Enzymes vs probiotics At the very end we also get into some testosterone support supplements. JOEL'S BOOK - THE GLYCINE MIRACLE: THE SCIENCE OF LIVING LONG AND FREE FROM INFLAMMATION HERE: https://sweetamine.com/in-the-media/ For the past 17 years, the author, a PhD in life sciences, has studied the amino acid glycine and its effects on the human body. This research has made clear to him that due to the typical Western diet, virtually all Americans suffer from an insufficient level of glycine, and this has resulted in a misunderstanding by the medical community of the natural function of inflammation as a proper response to injury. Dr. Brind has found that bodies in the glycine-deficient state typically develop inappropriate or excessive—and sometimes fatal—inflammation in response to a variety of physical or chemical stresses or injuries or infections, leading to chronic inflammation and ultimately resulting in disorders such as arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. His research has made clear to him that in reality inflammation is only a natural function of the immune system as a first response to infection and that taking an adequate supplement of glycine daily can mitigate, and often eliminate, the inappropriate inflammation the body creates, which can result in a longer and healthier life. #agelesshealth #podcast @wmaldc #inflammation #glycine

Memorable Quotes: "But at the end of the day, we have to be realistic and look at what's going to give our patients the biggest bang for their buck. That's going to be as safe as possible, that's going to work to help them with their symptoms and prevent problems. And that's where I see with glutathione in particular, using it more on a daily type basis." — Dr. Gina Nick   "Glutathione being super important for detoxification and also for hormone balance in women dealing with symptoms of menopause, whether it's foggy thinking, insomnia, hot flashes, low sex drive, all of those things, dry skin, et cetera, low energy." — Dr. Gina Nick Links Mentioned: FREE E-book “A Woman's Guide to Kick-Ass Sleep”: https://bit.ly/4cblYcT Best Daily Ever (Get 15% OFF first order): https://bestdailyever.com/ref/106/   Connect with Dr. Gina Nick: Website: https://drgina.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drginanick/   Connect with Betty Murray: Living Well Dallas Website: https://www.livingwelldallas.com/ Hormone Reset Website: https://hormonereset.net/ Betty Murray Website: https://www.bettymurray.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BettyAMurrayCN/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bettymurray_phd/   Produced by Evolved Podcasting: www.evolvedpodcasting.com

In this podcast, we'll discuss a very important amino acid: glycine. Collagen is a main component of connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. About ⅓ of collagen is made by glycine. Your body can make glycine, but unfortunately, it doesn't make very much. If you're not getting it from the diet, you could be deficient. Unless you're eating the skin and cartilage from meat, you're probably not getting enough glycine. Glycine is needed to make the most important antioxidant for all of your cells, glutathione. Without enough glycine to make glutathione, you can't detoxify your body. This can cause a buildup of toxicity, leading to inflammation. Glycine is a potent anti-inflammatory agent and is an essential building block for many enzymes and proteins. Here are some of the many important functions of glycine: • Makes heme in your blood • Important for gum health • Essential for DNA • Building block for catalase • Supports sleep • Supports the liver • Can help fix a leaky gut • Detoxifies uric acid • Supports blood sugar • Helps with weight loss • Reduces visceral fat Glycine can also turn into glucose to be used as fuel. Certain parts of the body, especially the brain, need a certain amount of glucose. If you're not consuming glucose, your body can make it. Glycine is a precursor for glucose, but don't worry about it bumping you out of ketosis. Glycine stimulates the hormone glucagon, which opposes insulin. If you're not eating animals nose-to-tail, if you're under stress, taking medication, drinking alcohol, or exposed to toxins, you can become deficient in glycine. You can increase your glycine intake by consuming gelatin! Try making your own gelatin using Knox Blox and using a natural sweetener like stevia. You can also take a glycine supplement. The average person needs about 4 to 10 grams of glycine per day. Bone broth and pork rinds can increase your glycine intake, but you need to consume a lot to get enough glycine. As we age, we need more glycine. Increasing glycine intake can potentially help people with osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, hair thinning, insomnia, gout, and kidney stones. We have a very, very special episode for you today. We have our friend, Julie Sawaya, and she is the co-founder of Needed. If you haven't heard us talking about Needed yet, go listen to the other episodes and get on Instagram. You guys, Needed is incredible. She is a mama of two young girls. We were just talking before the episode and her youngest is nine months. She is a lifelong nutrition nerd. I love that she calls herself this, a nutrition nerd. I'm a birth nerd. When we find ourselves passionate about something, we just nerd out, right? It's so amazing. Julie grew up in a family of medical doctors and learned at a young age the power of nutrition and how it can influence or help. Julie went on to study the issue of nutritional access in college and got her Master's in business from Stanford where she met her Needed co-founder, Ryan Of the most nutritionally aware of their friends, Julie and Ryan were shocked to realize that through nutrient testing, they were seriously major deficient in key nutrients. We don't think about it, Julie. We just don't think about this, I think, enough. We think we're taking something and we think that we're good. They found out that there was really much more needed for a healthy pregnancy. They dug into the research and they realized that they were not alone. 97% of women take a prenatal, yet 95% have nutrient deficiencies. Let me just say that again. 97% of women take a prenatal, yet 95% have nutrient deficiencies. Most prenatal vitamins just weren't cutting it and Julie and Brian started Needed to create a new, higher standard for perinatal health. Working alongside a collective of more than 3,000 perinatal nutrition and health experts, together they have redesigned the products, education, expertise, and experience that women need. Welcome to the show, Julie. I seriously am reading this and I'm like, “Oh my gosh.” This is amazing because like I was saying when I was pregnant years ago, I did not pay attention to anything. I got the bottle. I took it. Check mark.Julie: Yeah. No, I mean, I think it's a problem. The core underlying problem that we're solving at Needed is that women are nutritionally deficient in this life stage. It's a problem both with the products that are available. Most prenatal vitamins are designed to meet just the bare minimum nutrient needs, not to set you up for optimal health, and it's also an awareness or an education problem because, in some way, it's a problem that you don't know you have until you feel the effects of it. We're told it's normal to feel depleted, that it's normal to not feel your best, to feel like yourself during pregnancy or postpartum. So many of the complications of pregnancy have a nutritional root to it whether it's gestational diabetes or preeclampsia or hypertension or nausea even, or more severe nausea like hyperemesis. There is a nutritional component to it. Not to say that nutrition is a cure-all, but it's a reasonable first step in supporting your body optimally. Meagan: It's huge. Julie: What Ryan and I found when prior to starting the company is that despite how important nutrition is and yes, I am a lifelong nutrition nerd. Ryan and I are also trained nutritionists. It was truly and utterly shocking to us that we had these deficiencies but what we realized once we looked under the hood is that this problem is widespread and part of the problem stems from the fact that it's so common for women in the U.S. to see an OB. I come from a family of MDs and I have huge respect for the medical profession. But most doctors aren't trained in nutrition. It's actually not a requirement in most med schools. I think somewhere in the range of 50% of med schools don't require one nutrition course. The average OB appointment time in the US is 7 minutes long so even if an OB is trained in nutrition and has the intention to help educate their patients. OBs are generally very well-meaning. They're just people who are constrained on time and with the curriculum as we like to say, the curriculum is flawed, not the people. But even if all of the stars align in 7 minutes, you can't get all of your nutrition questions answered. What we hear again and again, the most common recommendation is, “Take a prenatal vitamin,” and then you ask, “What kind?” and then they say, “It doesn't matter. They're all the same.”Meagan: Just take one, yeah. Julie: “Just take one. Make sure it has folic acid in it,” which I'm sure we'll get into. That particular nutrient and nutrient form. But there is so much more to prenatal nutrition than vitamins and minerals. But even if you just focus on vitamins and minerals, it's really hard to pick a prenatal. There are over 100 on the market. There is a vast difference when it comes to quality. The quality of the nutrients, the quality of the nutrient forms, and dosages. We spent over three years formulating our first products with a collective of health and wellness practitioners that study perinatal nutrition and looking at all of the available clinical research on nutrient dosages and forms, and what pregnant and lactating women need. The reality is that there are a lot of nutritional gaps. That's where this collective of practitioners that are testing women's nutrient and hormone levels every single day really, really matters to understand in practice what does it take to dose? What dosing of Vitamin D do you need to give your patients to be in optimal nutrient ranges? It seems like such a basic question, but no prenatal company had done that legwork to understand what's actually optimal. Meagan: That is what I was going to say. There are so many things about Needed that I love. Honestly, one of them is how this company came about. It's two women that found that there was something lacking out there and had a passion from themselves and had passion to share it with the world. That's how The VBAC Link started. Myself and my old partner, Julie, same thing. We just found this passion so I love the heart that comes behind this company and then really what you guys have done. You've built it from somewhere where it was really mediocre if you could even call it that is incredible. Like you said, not only getting ingredients but the optimal amount. As I have compared in the past, there are so many out there that are even recommended on Amazon or wherever and they don't even have the ingredients at all let alone that optimal amount. I am so excited and honored for you to be here today and be talking to our community because I think that it is so important. Like you were saying, it's not that my provider had any ill intent to not give me that information, but it really was as I was walking out, he goes, “Oh, and by the way. Make sure to start a prenatal right now.” I was like, “Oh, okay.” That was it. That was it. I did. I found myself Googling it and found one. I was like, “Okay, cool. That one has some okay reviews.” I got it and I really didn't know the impact that it was leaving or lack thereof. Julie: Yeah, totally. I think some of that comes from there is misunderstanding that a prenatal vitamin is for the baby. By and large, unless you have massive nutrient deficiencies, the baby's going to get what he or she needs to develop properly, but often at the expense of your own nutrient reserves. As a mom of multiples, you know that oftentimes, women experience and understand the pain point more as a second-time or third-time mom than as a first-time mom because once you've been through pregnancy and birth and if you choose to breastfeed or pump, you can feel it viscerally how depleting that experience is maybe more so than a first-time mom that hasn't yet been through it all. In some ways, it's an experience that has to be lived to fully appreciate the problem probably much like the topic of VBACs. You go into a first birth maybe not fully understanding how one birth choice or one birth outcome will impact the second birth choice or birth outcome. What we're really trying to do at Needed is to raise awareness so that you can make the best choices possible with the information that you have. That's all that it's about. It's not about what I would have done differently with one pregnancy versus another. It's not at all. Any of the information we share is not in any way meant to shame or add guilt. There is so much of that mom guilt, so much of that fear-mongering out there. That is the antithesis of who we are as a company. But we find that when you're empowered with the right information, you can make better-informed decisions so that's a huge part of what our mission is here at Needed. Meagan: Yeah. Yeah, I mean we can relate to so much of that over here. I didn't know what I didn't know when I had through perinatal care to birth to recovering after a C-section. We grow from our journeys. Yeah. There's never any more shame. Mom guilt is way too thick. We lay it on way too thick, especially with social media. So here we are today to have this episode so you can start learning and growing and finding that information so you can make the best choice for you and your growing baby or maybe through your fertility journey or nursing journey or whatever part of the journey that you are in, Needed has so many incredible things, really it all. I'm sorry, but you kind of have it all out there. It's just amazing. So thank you so much. Yeah, let's get into some of these questions. Julie: Yeah, I'm excited. Meagan: Me too. Okay, so one of the questions is what is the importance of a prenatal vitamin? Really, why? We're being told to take these prenatal vitamins and we were just a little bit talking about how there are a lot of things that we need, but why do we really need them and does it matter if we don't take them?Julie: Yeah, that's a great question. I like to answer it with a look back at context from nature because first and foremost, I think people are right to have skepticism about supplements in general. Do I need them? Why do I need them? Is it just snake oil in general? I think something that was an aha moment for me as someone who was a little bit of a, “Food is my medicine, not supplements.” That's the perspective I came into before starting Needed. I think it's really helpful to understand that one of the main reasons we need supplements generally and then specifically at the life stage of pregnancy or the perinatal stage is because our soil is depleted. Food isn't as nutritious as it once was and it tends to take a lot longer to reach us than it used to. We're not generally growing our own food. We don't necessarily know who is growing our own food. Even if you shop at the farmers market as Ryan and I did at the time. We were testing our nutrients way back 6 years ago when we started Needed. Your food can still be depleted because the soil quietly is depleted. We're also subject to a lot more environmental toxins which that toxic load increases baseline nutrient requirements. Your body has to consume more nutrients to operate at homeostasis because of the burden of toxins it's trying to process effectively. Meagan: Yeah. Julie: We have a great book posted on our website. The title is “Why Your Grandmother Didn't Take Prenatal Vitamins But You Should.” It's really talking about these factors that are an evolution of modern life.We also now know as we didn't previously how important some nutrients are, especially nutrients like folate which is vitamin B9. It's really critical for babies' brain and neural tube formation. Folate's sister nutrient is choline. It's a super important nutrient for many of the same reasons– brain development, cognitive function, neural tube formation. Those are nutrients you don't want to skip out on in that even with your best intentions, you might be deficient it. 95% of women are deficient in– sorry about that. I have a rowdy dog. 95% of women are deficient in the nutrient choline. It's most abundant in eggs, liver, and foods like that but in the first trimester, many women have a food aversion to eggs. I certainly was not consuming any liver in my first trimester. Meagan: Yeah, I was going to say that liver never crossed the path of my pregnancy, unfortunately, or fortunately. Julie: Yeah, not at all. Yeah, but in any event, at a high level, prenatal vitamins are there to fill the gaps in your diet. I think that a misunderstanding and the way that prenatal vitamins have been formulated historically is that they're dosing around a concept called the RDA level which is basically a dosage framework that came out of World War II when the government was trying to determine how to set nutrient levels to avoid serious diseases like scurvy, like a significant deficiency of vitamin C. The entire concept of an RDA is rooted in this idea of, what's the bare minimum amount of a nutrient I need to give someone to avoid a disease or worse like famine or starvation. Minimalistic, not optimal. There's a big order of magnitude of difference of what amount of vitamin C your body needs to avoid scurvy versus what it needs to support postpartum tissue healing and repair and optimal immune health during pregnancy or optimal reference ranges. But at a high level, basically, prenatal vitamins are there to fill in the gaps in your diet. They are, unfortunately, a necessity because of our modern food system and they are especially important at a life stage like pregnancy and breastfeeding when your body will never have higher nutrient needs than it does in these life stages. It's really, really critical that you're getting the right nutrients. As I said earlier, it's not just for the baby. It's for you too. I think that a concept that we're really passionate about is centering women in this journey because ultimately, your baby is most likely going to get what they need but you might be left depleted and that depletion can have long-term impacts. If you want to have two kids or three kids or ten kids, your body has fewer nutrient reserves to give to the next baby with each sequential baby unless you are replenishing those nutrient stores. If your family feels complete, it's still important to supplement throughout the postpartum and a time period thereafter to support your hormone health and your thyroid health. Just general vitality and overall well-being. I think it's super common for women to say that it took them several years to feel like themselves post-pregnancy and a lot of that can be tied back to nutrient deficiencies. Meagan: Yeah, something that you said that resonated with me is that through each pregnancy, my life became busier because I had little toddlers and newborns. You know, all of these things around. So like you were saying at the beginning, you were like, “I can get it through my food. I can get it through my food.” Yes. Food definitely is impactful but obviously, as we know, is not as great as it used to be. Not only was it not as great as it used to be, but when I was really, really busy running around, I'm going to tell you right now that I was not eating correctly. I wasn't even getting enough calories at the time let alone the right foods. I was like, “Oh. There's a Nutrigrain bar. Let me just grab that because I'm hungry.” I wasn't grabbing the right things or enough. It just goes to show that as we keep going on too, it's so important. Julie: Yeah. That's absolutely the reality. I think where it's almost more important to take supplements with each subsequent pregnancy for that reason or even in the postpartum period because when you're pregnant with your first, you generally speaking have more time than you do in postpartum with your first. And in postpartum with your first, you generally have more time than pregnancy with your second or third or fourth so that's absolutely right. Meagan: Yeah. I would also remember breastfeeding my baby even in the middle of the day and just feeling sucked. Literally dry of energy and everything. Julie: Hydration and nutrients. Meagan: Hydration, yep. My mouth was getting dry. It just goes to show that you are feeling it. You are literally feeling your body change right there. Okay, so now we know it's definitely important to take prenatal vitamins in the perinatal/postpartum stage and everything. But what ingredients should we focus on? We talked a little bit about folate and choline. What should we be looking at when it comes to the back of our bottle? Are those really the two main ones or are there more ingredients that are like, “Hey, we really need to be focusing on these and if we don't see them on the back of our prenatal, we should have our alarms going off”? Julie: Yeah. There are really 24 vitamins and minerals that Needed has chosen to include in our prenatal vitamins because they are the ones that have the most clinically validated need for them. Choline and folate are two really important ones. I think they are really easy ones to scan a bottle for or a supplement facts panel and see not only does this have choline in it, but what's the dosage? The most common dosage of choline– it's a nutrient that has had an RDA. We talked about RDAs. It's a minimum amount. It's at an RDA of 450mg in pregnancy for 20+ years, 550 for lactation. The most common dosage of choline in a prenatal vitamin is 0, followed by 55mg which is 1/10 of the breastfeeding RDA. RDAs are the minimum. They're taking 1/10th of that in most prenatal vitamins. The reason for that isn't because you're getting all of the extra from your diet. It's because choline is a bulky nutrient that is hard to fit into a one-a-day prenatal. It's hard to fit into a gummy. You just really can't effectively do so. To dose it optimally, you need to include it in multiple capsules or in a powdered form like we offer. One of our options for a prenatal vitamin is a powder which is really, really great, especially for those bulkier nutrients like choline. The other bulky nutrients that are really important are calcium and magnesium. I would look for dosages of at least 200mg of those two ingredients. Ideally, magnesium and other minerals are in the glycinate form. Sometimes that's on a label as magnesium bis-glycinate or magnesium bound to glycine. Glycine is an essential amino acid that just helps with absorption, keylation basically, the usability of that nutrient in the body so that's a really important one. Other nutrients I suggest scanning a panel to see if they are in there– vitamin D is a telling one. I think nearly every prenatal vitamin will have vitamin D in it but the dosage matters and the form. Some prenatal use a less-absorbed form called vitamin D2. We recommend the D3 form. We also suggest looking for at least 2000 international units, IUs or more optimally would be 4000. Our prenatal vitamin capsules and multi-powder have 4000 and then our essentials multi which is a paired-down version in only three capsules has 2000. Those are the ranges that we typically like to see for vitamin D. Vitamin D is best absorbed with vitamin K. Make sure that vitamin K is on that supplement facts panel and 90 is the dosage that we tend to look for vitamin K. It should be in the K2 form. That's the best-absorbed one. Those are some key ones. The other things to look for are– I think we'll probably get into the question of what form of folate so let's have that's conversation. Meagan: Yeah.Julie: If you're told nothing else about prenatal nutrition, you're probably told to take folic acid which is the manmade synthetic form of the nutrient folate. Folate is naturally occurring in food. It's an essential nutrient. We talked about its use in the body. It's really important for babies' neural tube formation so for spina bifida. That's why it's emphasized usually in the first trimester because the neural tube fully closes during the first trimester. It's a nutrient that is so, so important and many women don't know they're pregnant until well into the first trimester so it's pretty common to hear that you should start taking it preconception which we definitely agree with, with one caveat which is that the synthetic form of folic acid is not readily used by the body. Many women have a genetic variation, MTHFR which makes it impossible for their bodies to convert synthetic folic acid into the usable form of folate. Instead, Needed uses methylfolate which is a naturally occurring form of folate. It's the active form meaning it doesn't have to go through the conversion process. It's been shown in clinical research to be better utilized by the body, especially for those with the MTHFR. There is controversy out there of folic acid versus methylfolate. Primarily what the controvery stems from is the fact that the clinical studies on folate for neural tube defects was done with folic acid. That's because the research is old. It's 30 years old. Now that we know how important folate is to neural tube defects, it would be unethical to do a clinical study with a double-blind placebo controlled study where you're putting women on a placebo that has no folate in it versus one that has folate in it. We know the risk factors. We don't want to induce spinal cord issues or neural defects. So a lot of those who are pro-folic acid are relying on stale research. Really, this argument is that all of the clinical research around neural tube formation is on folic acid. We're not arguing with that. That's actually a true statement. But there's a huge wealth of research showing that head-to-head comparing methylfolate versus folic acid, methylfolate is better absorbed by the body. 96% of the circulating folate in your body is methylfolate so that's pretty clear evidence in support of it. Mechanistically, in the body, how we're preventing neural tube formations is the serum folate status of mom. There is research showing that methylfolate raises serum folate status in mom in the same way or better than folic acid does. We have a really well-researched blog post on this topic on our website. It's dense. Maybe we can link to it in the show notes for those who want to learn more, but there is a reason why many of the higher-quality prenatal vitamins are including methylfolate, not folic acid. I would tend to distrust– there are some out there who are saying, “Oh, it's a designer prenatal vitamin. They're just trying to charge you more.” The reality is that methylfolate is so much more expensive than folic acid. You could make a lot higher profit margin if you used folic acid than methylfolate. I think it's around 100 times more expensive which is also why most of the clinical research is relying on folic acid. Folic acid is a nutrient that is often fortified in cereals and bread, so there's also a food lobby that has an interest in keeping folic acid in things and not methylfolate because it would be cost-prohibitive to include methylfolate in a $3.00 box of cereal. Meagan: Interesting. Julie: Yeah, there are a lot of factors. I don't want to bog listeners down in all of this information, but this is a really good nutrient to highlight how much information and nuance and research goes into selecting optimal nutrient forms and optimal nutrient dosages. It's a quick way of saying that we did a tremendous amount of research and there is a lot of evidence behind what we're including in the Needed prenatal. We include references for every single nutrient that we use for those who are, like me, nutrition nerds that want to go many layers deep. For those of you who are like, “Oh my god. This is over my head,” I would say that the core message is that we've done extensive research and these nutrients have been utilized in practice with perinatal nutrition and health experts for decades. This isn't newly redesigned. We did design our prenatal vitamin from the ground up, but the insights, expertise, and recommendations behind it have been put into practice for many, many decades. Really, what Needed did was bring together all of this inside of a single product instead of previously how practitioners were having to say, “Okay, go take this magnesium and this vitamin D and this prenatal and this amount of choline,” because no prenatal had everything that you needed in one package. Meagan: Right. That is another reason why I love and trust you guys so much. Literally, it's all of the research that has gone into creating such a solid product for the birth community so I love that. Thank you so much for explaining that because yeah, it definitely is a hot debate sometimes. Julie: Yeah. I think it's good to have that. We love a healthy debate. We work with practitioners. We actually have now almost 4000 practitioners in our community. It includes OBs. It includes reproductive endocrinologists but it also includes a lot of registered dieticians and naturopathic doctors and functionally-trained practitioners. We're collaborating with all of them when designing products. We appreciate that some people come from different training backgrounds. Some people might have different skepticism and all voices are welcome. We want to have a construction conversation on this specific topic of folate versus folic acid, sometimes, the status quo argument is unwilling to hear the other side. It's nuanced and that's why we have a great blog post on the topic. Also, if you're just early in your research and want a basic primer on what to look for in a prenatal vitamin, we also have that free resource available on our website as well as a review of over 75 of the prenatal vitamins on the market. It compares the pros, the cons, and overall recommendations. So if you love your prenatal, but it doesn't have choline or it doesn't have magnesium, we'll give you those recommendations on how to supplement or how to get more of those nutrients from your diet. Again, we're really not trying to tell you, “Everything you're doing is wrong.” It's really about how you can upgrade what you're doing or make small changes on the margin that can have a huge benefit for you and your baby. Meagan: Yeah. I was going to say, All I can see is that it's an improvement. We're making improvements. We grow and make improvements in everything in our day-to-day lives. This is one that is really important so that's why we're doing this today. We're sharing this so we can make improvements. Sometimes just it's just small tweaks to benefit ourselves. Okay, so now we're talking about all of the things that we really should be looking for nutrient-wise during pregnancy. Are there any nutrients we really should be avoiding taking during pregnancy and through your guys' research, have there been some of those ingredients even in prenatals out there? We were just talking about folic acid and folate, but are there any where you are like, “Okay, if you see this, this is one of those tweaks that you really should make”?Julie: Yeah, it's a great question. We talked about folic acid. We would suggest avoiding that nutrient. The other very common nutrient form that we suggest avoiding is a form of B12 called cyanocabalamin. It's easy to remember because it's actually derived from a cyanide molecule. There is just not research to substantiate. It's a synthetic nutrient form. It doesn't exist in nature and there's not safety data to suggest why you'd want to consume cyanocabalamin. We're leveraged the two naturally-occuring active forms, methocobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. We use those in a 50-50 ratio. Try to avoid cyanide if you can. Try to avoid synthetic folic acid. We're always using nutrient forms that exist in nature and we think that that's the best way to make sure that we're on the side of safety. It's often contrary to cost. Those synthetic nutrient forms tend to be cost-effective but they really don't necessarily perform as nature intended. Meagan: Right. Julie: And then another one that's maybe a little counterintuitive or nuanced is the nutrient iron. Most prenatal vitamins have iron in them. We chose not to include iron in our prenatal for a few reasons. Iron is absolutely an essential nutrient for pregnancy and postpartum. It supports your blood volume. Your blood volume effectively doubles in pregnancy and you lose blood postpartum. It's a super important nutrient for avoiding anemia and for just overall blood volume expansion during pregnancy. The reason to not include it in a prenatal is that your needs vary by trimester or by stage. We wanted to make a prenatal vitamin that was safe to take before, during, and after pregnancy and safe for all women to be taking. Iron also competes with calcium and other nutrients for absorption in the body. Oftentimes, prenatals will just include both calcium and iron and you can be pretty well-assured that the calcium that you're taking isn't going to be absorbed in that case. Or sometimes they just leave calcium but they don't tell you that you should take calcium at a different time of day. We've kept calcium in our prenatal and we offer iron as a separate add-on. The advantage of that is that you can take exactly what you need. If you've done any iron testing, which is pretty common in pregnancy, you can tailor the dosage to your ferritin levels. That's the type of iron testing we recommend. And then taking it at a different time of day ensures you're absorbing all of the calcium that you need as well as all of the iron that you need. We like delivering iron in the kelated form bound to glycine. It's much gentler on the stomach. A lot of prenatals have a really high dose of iron in a form that's not well-absorbed. It can cause GI issues and then women will stop taking their prenatal because they say it makes them nauseous. Meagan: Yes!Julie: There are many reasons why we think that iron in a prenatal is suboptimal. I think if you don't know that information, you might scan prenatals like Needed's and say, “Oh, it doesn't include iron. That's a problem,” and it's actually a really intentional choice so I like to call that nutrient out. Meagan: I love that you talked about that because as a doula, we actually do have a lot of clients who pee on a stick, see it's positive, and start looking for a prenatal. We have clients that do hire us in that stage and we're always there for our clients. They'll be writing us and be like, “We're just so sick and it seems to be after I take my prenatal,” so they stop taking their prenatal because it makes them sick or their nausea gets so intense when in fact, it's not what we should be viewing. Again, not to shame anyone if you've stopped taking your prenatal. We should be taking our prenatal, but we don't think about that. I love that you guys have done that. I've been sharing it since I learned about this. I've been sharing that with my clients really early on because I think it's really important. Something also I love about your products is that there is a lot that can help with nausea as well. Julie: Yeah. I'm glad you mentioned that because that's one of the key reasons why it's really, really beneficial to start taking a prenatal vitamin before you try to conceive. We suggest up to 6-12 months before conception getting on a high-quality prenatal vitamin for a couple of reasons. One is that it can support cycle regularity so ovulation and healthy ovulation. It can also support egg quality. We have now a separate add-on, egg quality support, which is amazing in helping your egg follicles as they mature into egg cells before ovulation which is great. And then it can help you to build up your nutrient stores. Oftentimes, and I've been there. I've had first-trimester nausea despite all of my best attempts and taking all of the right supplements. Sometimes it just happens. You can minimize nausea by having adequate nutrient stores prior to conceiving. And then if you do find yourself with severe nausea in the first trimester, if your nutrient levels are optimal pre-conception, it's more tolerable to skip a day or two of your prenatal vitamin because your levels were already in a great range before so your body has enough nutrient stores. I'm not advocating not taking your prenatal in the first trimester, but if life happens and you skip some days, the fact that you started early on means that your body is going to have enough of those nutrients to draw upon to get you through to the second trimester when hopefully you're feeling much better. Meagan: Right. If we have really bad nausea and vomiting and we're throwing up all of the time, we're also losing nutrients, so it's a whole cycle. It all goes together. Julie: Yep. It sure does. It sure does. Not to push our products, that's not what this is about, but I would say hydration, hydration, hydration for nausea. We have hydration support if you are interested at all in trying it, I suggest trying it. It has the right nutrient ratios for pregnancy. It's made without artificial sweeteners. It just has monk fruit which is naturally occurring. It comes in three flavors, three very first-trimester-friendly flavors. They are citrusy so grapefruit, lime, and lemon. But you can also make hydration stuff at home. You can just take a glass of water and put in some sea salt. You can add a squeeze of lemon. You can add in– you probably have your own recipe for a labor aid, but that's another use of our hydration support during labor. Hydration can really impact. It's like the chicken and the egg. “I'm nauseous. I don't want to drink water. Water makes me nauseous,” but also if you're dehydrated, nausea is worse. I would really recommend trying to stay hydrated during the first trimester if you can. Meagan: Yeah, absolutely. From the first trimester to the end, sometimes we can have early prodromal labor and stuff like that when we're actually dehydrated. Julie: Exactly. Meagan: It's just so, so, so important the whole time. Julie: And just to support that blood volume expansion that we were talking about that takes place in the second and third trimester. It has to come from nutrients but largely water. Your amniotic fluid levels increase. Sometimes they decrease too and they risk you out of a VBAC or a home birth and the things that you want for your birth outcome. So yeah. Hydration is key. It's your mom's advice, “Make sure you're drinking enough water,” but it's really true. Meagan: It really is true. My kids all roll their eyes at me. They're really big into sports and I'm like, “No, your body, your muscles, and everything needs that hydration.” Okay, so we've talked about when it's good. We've talked about taking it before. One of the questions is, “Oh, I've had my baby. I'm done with my prenatal vitamin, right?” But we talked a little bit and skimmed the surface about why it is important to take it during breastfeeding. We talked a little bit about how it's still depleting our bodies, but after having a baby, how long should we be taking these? Then if we want a close baby, is it something that we should just continue?Julie: Yeah. Yeah, great questions. The minimum that we would recommend is 6 months after delivery and that is whether or not you are breastfeeding. So from your choice or from how things turn out and you aren't lactating, it's still beneficial to give your body that time to replenish because pregnancy and labor are really depleting events on the body. It just takes time to rebuild those nutrient stores. That's the minimum. So yes. Please, keep taking a prenatal vitamin postnatally. There are postnatal vitamins on the market. Generally, that is a marketing differentiation, not a product-quality differentiation. Most postnatal vitamins are almost identical to their prenatal counterparts except for a couple of nutrients where they take maybe 25mg more vitamin C which is less than you would get from one strawberry. It's basically a marketing play. We skipped that step and we just offer one prenatal vitamin that's appropriate for the entire perinatal, before, during, and after stage. And then if you are breastfeeding or pumping or otherwise producing milk, we recommend staying on a prenatal vitamin for that full duration of time. If you can give your body a couple of months once you stop lactating, that's really beneficial for the same reasons we just discussed. It gives your body a chance to recuperate. There is a concept known as the recuperative interval when we're thinking about pregnancy spacing if you're having multiple kids. I myself did not do this. I breastfed my first daughter basically until the day my second daughter was born. Maybe not optimal– optimal in some ways, not optimal in others. Meagan: Really common, though. Julie: Really common. Yep. Meagan: A lot of people do it and then they want to feed both babies. Julie: Exactly. Or maybe you can breastfeed until you're pregnant with the second. In any event, that is a reason why you should keep taking your prenatal vitamin because it ensures that your body has enough nutrients to give to your baby. Basically, the order of operations is going to be growing baby gets first, older baby gets second, and mom gets last. So if you are nursing while pregnant, if you are tandem feeding, that's what your body is going to do. It's evolutionary. Your body is really smart. Except for in the example that we talked about in the recording about severe postpartum hemorrhaging, your body's first priority will be surviving but second to that, your body is going to give to baby before it gives to older baby before it gives to itself. Make sure to take your prenatal vitamin all throughout. I think that's a general misunderstanding. A lot of women are like, “I'm not pregnant anymore.” Men, when looking at the category when Ryan and I were starting the company, they're like, “It's 9 months. You're going to have a customer for a maximum of 9 months.” We were like, “Just frankly, you're wrong,” because this is a life stage that women are in for five years, or seven years, or ten years. It's a much longer life stage when you account for trying to conceive, pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, trying again, or preparing to conceive again. That's why this is a consequential decision and taking care of your body during those five or ten or one or two really intensive nutritional years can set you up for long-term health and your babies up for long-term health for the rest of their life. Meagan: Yeah, absolutely. I was one of those after my first. My provider didn't say, “Continue taking these vitamins.” That wasn't even a discussion. It was, “How are you feeling? What birth control would you like?” That's really the conversation that we had. Again, we're not shaming the provider for that but that's just following the script. “Okay. We're six weeks. This is what we're doing.” I just needed so much more. Julie: At six weeks, honestly, nutritionally depletion-wise, you are nowhere near recovered even if your scar is healing well from a Cesarean or if your stitches are healing well from a vaginal delivery. Emotionally and physically, we are very much postpartum at that point. Even at the stage I am now at 9 months postpartum, this is still postpartum. We call it the fourth trimester sometimes which at least allows for three months, but in a lot of years, it's two years after having a baby that your body is still returning to homeostasis, whatever that homeostasis is for you. Meagan: Right, and then by then, we're kind of entering that prenatal stage again. Julie: You could be. Exactly. Meagan: Right? A lot of people are. I love this. Okay, so a couple more questions. I know we are kind of running out of time, but collagen is a big thing that I never really heard about when I was pregnant. The words didn't even come out of anyone's mouth. I honestly didn't even read it online. You guys have prenatal protein collagen or collagen protein. I think it's important to talk about that too because it can impact us in a really positive way not only during but especially after healing from surgery or anything. We've got tissues that are healing so I don't know if you'd like to share a little bit about the protein. Julie: I'd love to. I think that this is something that we are super passionate about and something I learned a lot about when we were in the formulation stage. We know that protein requirements increase substantially in pregnancy. You need 80-100g of protein a day. That is the low end of the range. There is newer research showing that you need upwards of 140g of protein a day. That's a lot to hit when you're pregnant. Those needs are there because you're growing a baby obviously. Amino acids are the building blocks of life, the organ that you're growing, the placenta, and blood sugar regulation. Especially as your blood volume is expanding, protein is really important for stabilizing blood sugar and for a lot of other things. We love collagen proteins specifically because it's a single ingredient. It's really cleanly sourced. Plant-based proteins can be high in heavy metals whereas we don't find that to be the case with collagen protein. The amino acids in collagen protein are specifically really beneficial for pregnancy. Two of them, glycine and proline, are conditionally essential meaning that your body can't synthesize them on their own. They have to be consumed by food and many of us are not consuming the foods that are high in glycine and proline like the carcasses of animals and the skins and bones. It's just not very common, especially in pregnancy. We tend to eat boneless, skinless chicken breast. Maybe some even have animal protein aversions during pregnancy. Collagen is an awesome form of glycine and proline and overall meets your protein needs. It's effectively flavorless. You can blend it into smoothies. It blends really well with our prenatal multivitamin powder. You can mix it, especially for those first-trimester mamas, into mac and cheese. You can mix it into just about anything to get some protein in even when you're feeling a bit nauseous. Then for postpartum, why it's beneficial is that your skin tissue stretches. It needs to recover whether that's because you had a vaginal delivery or a Cesarean. Collagen can be really, really helpful for tissue healing and repair and recovery in that regard. The last thing I should mention is that the placenta is actually comprised of collagen so it really makes a lot of sense to be consuming those building blocks when you're making your new organ for pregnancy. Meagan: Yeah. I want to share with you guys that I love it in my oatmeal. Julie: Yeah, that's awesome. Meagan: I put it in my oatmeal. I'll put some apples and a little bit of cinnamon and it works really well. I actually put a little bit of yogurt. It's amazing. Julie: I sneak it into my daughter's oatmeal. She calls it sprinkles. Kids have lower protein requirements than adults of course, but it helps to balance out their blood sugar too in a really beneficial way. Making sure she's not bouncing off the walls more than necessary. Meagan: I love that. I love that. That's something too I love. A lot of this is really good for kids. We could go into it. There are so many other products. There are a lot that my kids love as well. Okay, so the last question, we kind of talked about this in the beginning how we can get this through food. It's hard to get that because we're not typically eating carcasses and skin and liver, right? Julie: Yep. Meagan: So what are some foods that we can drop for this audience to eat that help us during pregnancy just in general and in postpartum that will help us in addition to Needed and other products? Julie: Well, I would say that in general, we are huge advocates for food. You can't out-supplement a bad diet. Food should be a critical component of your nutrition plan. It's just really hard sometimes to eat optimally. But foods to focus on during pregnancy, are lots of organic if you can, leafy greens, vegetables, and fruits. Eat the rainbow. I think some people tend to be afraid of fruits because of the sugar content and gestational diabetes but there is fiber in fruit. Unlike fruit juice, there is actually fiber in fruit. You can pair it with something like nut butter to add a little bit of protein and fat to help with blood sugar stability. Other things to focus on are prebiotics and probiotic-rich foods like kimchi and depending on your stance on it, I drink kombucha during pregnancy. There is a tiny, tiny, tiny amount of alcohol in it but the benefits to me outweigh any potential risk of alcohol content. Sauerkraut is another really great one and fiber. A lot of women during pregnancy have hemorrhoids or they're constipated so foods that are rich in fiber are generally very good for you and your baby. Probably one of my favorites when I'm pregnant– I tend to fall off the wagon a little bit postpartum because you have a newborn and whatnot, but I'm usually really good at smoothies during pregnancy. Smoothies are a great way. You can put our collagen in it or our prenatal multivitamin powder. If you are not a capsules fan, you can even take our pre-probiotic and add it or vitamin D. You can add in a lot of our capsule products. Just break open the capsule and dump the powder contents into the smoothie. That's a really great way to put in greens and fruits and whatever else– nuts, seeds. That's a great way to get in your fat content. That's definitely one of my favorites as well as depending on the season. If you're pregnant more in the winter months, you can make soups. Stir the collagen protein into the soup. Try to load it with those other fruits, vegetables, and fiber-type-rich foods. But I think we're really, really passionate about debunking some of the concerns around pregnancy like pregnancy weight gain. You are eating for two. It doesn't mean you should go load up on ice cream and pretzels and chips. Some of that in moderation is totally fine, but think about nutrient density. That's what you're going for both for you and your baby. It's going to help you avoid depletion, to feel better. Pregnancy, even if you're eating well, is pretty uncomfortable so I think eating foods that are going to nourish you and leave you feeling good is definitely the priority. We do share some really great recipe ideas over on our Instagram. A couple of people in our network that you can check out if you're looking for more food recommendations, the prenatal nutritionist, Ryann Kipping, has a prenatal nutrition library that is full of really great food-based nutrition ideas. We also love the work of Lily Nichols. She's really popular with midwives and doulas also. She wrote a book called “Real Food for Pregnancy” that has some great, practical tips for nutrient-dense meals. A lot of what she's recommending is going to sound familiar from this podcast like collagen and eating more meat than you might think you need and eating more. Honestly, I say this coming from the perspective of having been a vegetarian and a vegan for a long time. I think that you can do that during pregnancy but you have to be really intentional about protein and about nutrients like vitamin D and choline. It's much more difficult but it's possible. I would not advise undergoing a vegetarian or a vegan pregnancy without working with a dietician or a nutritionist to help you figure out what those nutritional gaps could be. Meagan: That's a really good point because we do. We know we all eat differently and we all have different allergies and things that have developed so that is really, really important to know. We are going to have all of these links that she is mentioning like the blogs, the recipes, all of this linked in the show notes. So if you want to go and dive in–Julie: Nerd out with us. Meagan: Nerd out and get your teeth sinking into this, then check it out because you guys, Needed is just amazing. Really, it's such an honor to have had you on today to be talking about this. Julie: Thank you for having me. Meagan: Because it is so important. With my first and second pregnancies, I was healthy-ish but each pregnancy got better because I learned more. Julie: Isn't that amazing that there is this concept of, “Oh, you're too old or you're subsequent.” If I have a third, I'll be a geriatric mom but it's so much more about your health span or your health status than it is about age in some ways you can have your healthiest pregnancy at 40 if you're doing the right things and taking care of your body in the right way. Meagan: Yeah. Yeah. My best pregnancy was the older one. The oldest that I was. I was the oldest in my pregnancy and it was my best pregnancy. It just impacts. I wanted to touch a little bit on what you said that sometimes we hesitate to eat or we are eating the right things. Women of Strength, if you are listening, I know that as a person wanting to have a VBAC and as a mama wanting to have a VBAC, sometimes we get scared of the world out there saying, “Your baby is too big and you can't have a vaginal birth.” I saw just today three posts in our community, “A doctor said that my baby is too big.” Then we sometimes tend to hold back and not get the right nutrients, right? Not purposely, but purposely because we're trying not to make too big of a baby because we really want this vaginal birth. It's all twisted and I don't love it, but it's really important to remember like she was saying, get these nutrient-dense foods in you and don't be scared to supplement. Don't be scared to supplement because our bodies and babies deserve it. We deserve it. Julie: Yep. And on the other side of birth, I tend to feel that bigger babies sometimes sleep better. They sometimes eat better. My second daughter was almost 9 pounds, but the first daughter was late. She was born almost at 42 weeks. I was so nervous about it, but she was a champion sleeper and feeder. I think there is a lot of natural wisdom in that your body knows how big of a baby to grow and your body knows how long to carry that baby for. But I loved this conversation. I think it's so important. It might not be immediately intuitive why nutrition and birth outcomes go so hand-in-hand, but they do.Oftentimes, what risks women out of the birth that they want whether it's a VBAC or just a primary first-time vaginal birth is a factor that can be traced back to nutrition like preterm labor or gestational diabetes or whatnot. We are very aligned on the idea that nutrition for prevention and for optimal outcomes. Meagan: Yeah. Yeah. I had a client during COVID who had pre-eclampsia. She got it at 18 weeks. She had a home birth planned and all of these amazing things planned. She had to completely shift gears. The second one, she was like, “I'm going to start trying soon and I'm going to dive in.” She did. She dove in and changed so many things and had an incredible, incredible home birth with her second. She was like, “I really do feel that because I fed my body and fueled my body, it gave back.” We know that sometimes we do all of the right things, everything, and still, we have undesired outcomes. But if we can do everything within our control, if we can do what we can within our control– Julie: That's exactly it. Yeah, I'm nodding my head here because we keep saying to ourselves and are starting to say more externally that there is so much on this journey that you can't control. You can do everything right and still have things not go as you want. That's just a reality. But nutrition is a big one that you can control so why not focus on the things that you can control and let go of the rest? Meagan: Right. Absolutely. Well, we will end on that note because I think that is such a powerful ending point. I want to share with everybody that we are going to have the link in the show notes, but if you want to go check out Needed and all of the amazing products because we just barely touched on a few today, you can go to thisisneeded.com to learn more about Julie and Ryan and go learn about their partners. There are a lot of partners that we've actually had on the show. We just love you guys. We appreciate you so much so thank you for taking the time today.Julie: Absolutely.
