A federal class-action lawsuit brought by youth basketball players who were potential sex abuse victims of former Iowa Barnstormers basketball coach Greg Stephen reached a settlement Friday that will establish a fund of over a $1 million for the athletes. Guy Cook, lead attorney for an https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/adidas-added-to-class-action-suit-against-former-barnstormers-coach/ (unnamed former Barnstormers Basketball of Iowa player who filed the suit in 2020), said the fund will be established for select former youth athletes affiliated with the Barnstormers and coached by Stephen from 2005 through 2018, and “fell victim to Stephen's illicit acts of secretly procuring nude images of players.” The settlement is pending court approval. The trial was set to start Monday in U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Iowa in Davenport. https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/180-year-sentence-for-former-youth-coach-greg-stephen-who-covertly-recorded-naked-teens/ (Stephen, 44, of Monticello, was sentenced in 2019) to 180 years in federal prison. He pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual exploitation of a child and one count each of possession of child pornography and transportation of child pornography. A Cedar Rapids man accused of killing a woman April 10 at the Taboo Nightclub and Lounge likely will face updated charges because a man seriously injured that night died late last week. Saturday Morning Pregame Hour 1- Saturday Hangover and Iowa Barnstormers back home!
On today's podcast i talk about some of the amazing athletes I covered early in my career. The topic came to mind after a discussion on Listen App about Kurt Warner. I actually announced a game in Des Moines, Iowa when Warner was playing in the Arena League for the Iowa Barnstormers. Obviously, nobody knew that they were watching a guy that would be come a Pro Football Hall Of Famer. It got me thinking about some of the other big time athletes I covered in my career. I talk about some of the big time hockey players I announced in college and then share a story about bartending for the New York Rangers one night in Rye, NY. I look back on my career and I am truly blessed. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We reminisce about the original Arena Football League and its curious dalliances with the New York metropolitan area, with veteran Newsday sports writer/columnist Gregg Sarra - who not only regularly covered franchises like the 1997-98 New York CityHawks and the Long Island-based New York Dragons (2001-08), but also even played an actual game with one of them - and lived to tell (and write) about it. After beat-reporting two woeful seasons' worth of CityHawks games at the "World's Most Famous Arena" (Madison Square Garden had hastily lobbied the league for its own expansion club when it got wind of a team coming to the nearby New Jersey Meadowlands: the Red Dogs) - Sarra was both surprised and giddy when he heard yet another team would be coming to the market - this time to his hometown Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Dragons were actually the relocated Iowa Barnstormers (1995-2000) - a smaller-market sensation owned by league founder (and episodes 43 & 44 guest) Jim Foster - who sold the franchise to New York Islanders NHL owner Charles Wang, with the blessing of an AFL management eager to finally succeed in the nation's largest media market. On April 8, 2001, Sarra got the literal "inside story" of the new club - when, at Wang's suggestion, he suited up for and saw last-minute action in the Dragons' first-ever home preseason match - a Plimptonian participatory experience that gave his Newsday readers a true sense of what the indoor game was all about. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Thursday, February 3. According to a forecast from the National Weather Service, it should be mostly cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area on Thursday, with a high near 13 degrees. Wind chill values will drop as low as -15 degrees. On Thursday night it will be mostly clear, with a low around -4 degrees. COVID-19 outbreaks at long-term care facilities in Iowa are in the triple digits this week, while the number of new virus cases and hospitalizations are declining after weeks of surging numbers. This week, 109 long-term care facilities — about a quarter of Iowa's 445 nursing homes — were reporting coronavirus outbreaks, according to weekly totals released Wednesday by the Iowa Department of Public Health. That's nearly four times the 25 outbreaks — three or more cases among staff and residents — reported four weeks ago and is the highest total seen since Jan. 1, 2021. In good news, after a weeks of rising numbers that strained health care systems' capacity and resources, COVID-19 hospitalizations are on the decline in Iowa. As of Wednesday, patients hospitalized with COVID-19 dropped to 794 statewide from the 929 reported last week. The number of patients in intensive care and on ventilators also continued to decline this past week. The Iowa House overwhelmingly supported what they called a “big deal” Wednesday to boost the renewable fuels industry and farmers by mandating that retailers offer products to consumers containing more ethanol. The House voted 82-10 to require fuel retailers to begin offering E15, a higher blend than the E10 fuel more typically found at the gas pump. E15 is a blend of 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline. It contains 5% more ethanol than E10. If the bill, a priority for Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, is approved next by the Iowa Senate, more than half of Iowa fuel retailers would be required to offer E15 on at least one pump, and after January 2023 new stations and those that install new pumps would have to offer E15 from at least half of their dispensers. A federal judge's ruling Wednesday will make it easier for potential sex abuse victims of former youth basketball coach Greg Stephen to join a class-action lawsuit against Stephen and the Iowa Barnstormers. Guy Cook, lead attorney for an unnamed former Iowa Barnstormers basketball player who filed the suit in 2020, told The Gazette the ruling should help advance settlement of the case. In the ruling, U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen Locher refused the Barnstormers' request to require potential victims to “opt-in” to the lawsuit. Last year, a https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/judge-approves-class-action-against-iowa-youth-basketball-league-former-coach-greg-stephen/ (federal judge ruled all former and present members of Barnstormers) — who were potential victims of Stephen's between 2005 and April 5, 2018 — could join the class action lawsuit. https://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/180-year-sentence-for-former-youth-coach-greg-stephen-who-covertly-recorded-naked-teens/ (Stephen, 44, of Monticello, was sentenced )in 2019 to 180 years in federal prison. He pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual exploitation of a child and one count each of possession of child pornography and transportation of child pornography for acquiring naked photos and images of Iowa Barnstormer AAU players. Emery Songer and Tyler Allen sit in for Ross and Chris! NFL Playoff picture: who's in, who's out? Juli Pettit from the Iowa Barnstormers calls in to talk about the Kurt Warner movie, American Underdog!
Hollywood could not imagine a better UNDERDOG story than the one Kurt Warner has lived. So, they went straight to the source and made a movie about Kurt's incredible journey. “AMERICAN UNDERDOG: THE KURT WARNER STORY” opens in theaters soon, and I'm thrilled to welcome Kurt this week so you can hear firsthand how he OVERCAME INCREDIBLE ODDS to live one of the most INSPIRATIONAL stories I've heard in a long time. After playing college football at Northern Iowa for four years, Kurt was undrafted and stocked shelves in a grocery store. He eventually landed a spot on the Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena Football League before signing with the St. Louis Rams as a backup quarterback in 1998. A year later, everything changed. Not only did he become a starter, during his first season, Kurt also led the Rams to a title in SUPER BOWL XXXIV and earned league and Super Bowl MVP honors. He won another league MVP when the Rams returned to Super Bowl XXXVI. After signing with the Cardinals, he led the team to their first Super Bowl appearance as well, making him the second quarterback in history to start the Super Bowl with two different teams. When he retired, Kurt finished his career owning a dozen NFL RECORDS. With all the challenges he faced, if anyone had a right to have self-doubt, it was Kurt. Did he have self-doubt? ABSOLUTELY NOT! As he explains, Kurt always believed in his talent, but how he approached that talent had to CHANGE before he found success. You're also going to hear how stocking grocery store shelves helped Kurt create a path to the NFL. It's a story of how doing COMMON THINGS the right way can produce decidedly UNCOMMON RESULTS that you can use in your life as well. Kurt also gives you a masterclass on the importance of CONFIDENCE as an element of success, especially when you encounter inevitable setbacks. FAITH has always been a part of Kurt's life, and we spend a good deal of time talking about how Kurt's RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD has grown and changed over the years to become one of the things that define who he is. We touch on how he has actively applied faith in good times and the bad and how he has STAYED TRUE TO HIS FAITH despite setbacks after his incredible accomplishments. At this time of year, and in times like these, we need UPLIFTING stories to help us find JOY and PEACE. That's why spending time listening to Kurt Warner's story is a PERFECT GIFT you'll want to give yourself and SHARE WITH OTHERS.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday, September 25th, and Sunday, September 26th. The next two days should make for a beautiful fall weekend. According to the National Weather Service it will be sunny Saturday with a high near 73 degrees. A moderate wind of 5 to 15 mph will blow throughout the day. Saturday night it will be mostly clear, with a low around 45 degrees. Sunday will be similar to Saturday, but a bit warmer, with a high near 84 degrees and a low coming in around 56 degrees. 88-year-old Chuck Grassley, the longest-serving Republican in the Senate, announced Friday he will seek re-election to an eighth six-year term on the 2022 elections. The second-oldest member of the Senate, Grassley has held elective office continuously since 1959, when he was elected to the Iowa House. He has served in the U.S. Senate since 1981, holding major committee assignments — including as chairman of the powerful Senate finance and judiciary committees — and formerly serving as the chamber's second-highest presiding officer. He famously has established the “full Grassley,” a tour of Iowa's 99 counties that he makes every year. Grassley, who would be 95 at the end of his term if reelected, said he intends to serve a full term. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina was 100 when he left the Senate in 2002. A federal judge this week ruled all former and present members of an Iowa youth basketball program the Iowa Barnstormers — who were potential victims of sexual misconduct by former coach Greg Stephen between 2005 and April 5, 2018 — can join a federal class action lawsuit filed last year. U.S. District Judge John Jarvey had denied a previous class action certification in May, allowing Guy Cook, lead attorney for an unnamed former Barnstormers player, to alter who would be included in the lawsuit. Cook told the Gazette there may be more than 400 potential victims of Stephen over his time with the team. The unnamed player is suing the former coachhttps://www.thegazette.com/crime-courts/adidas-added-to-class-action-suit-against-former-barnstormers-coach/ (, Barnstormers, team sponsor Adidas and the Amateur Athletic Union) for being negligent in hiring and supervising Stephen and inadequate policies to protect “vulnerable youth athletes from the despicable conduct” of Stephen. Stephen was caught with hidden equipment that he used to take photos and videos of Barnstormer players while they were naked, and he also used catfishing methods to obtain other explicit photos from players. He was sentenced in 2019 to 180 years in federal prison. A fourth version of a proposed housing development near Hickory Hill Park will be coming before the Iowa City Planning & Zoning Commission in October. The updated proposal for rezoning the 48-acre plot northeast of the park, 1439 E. Bloomington St. in northeast Iowa City, is scaled back from previous plans and devotes nearly three times more land to the park. The proposal includes a 120-bed senior living facility and 38 acres of land dedicated to the city for public open space and the expansion of Hickory Hill Park, according to a Sept. 13 letter from Axiom Consultants to neighbors and the city. The previous versions of the plan have nearly been approved by the full Iowa City City Council, but angry public sentiment has led to it getting stymied on numerous occasions. He also gets into the big issue with Tim Tebow trying out for the Jaguars and a couple names that may have been forgotten about with the athlete that would get the restaurant table in Iowa City. Zamora points out that even if Aaron Rodgers doesn't come back its a good idea to have Green Bay in a lot of prime time games and finishes the show discussing the problem with the COVID-19 protocols amongst the U.S./Canadian border with the NHL playoffs looming.

Here's your first warning, if you have not done so and have the time, you should go watch “Fourth and Long” on Amazon Prime. The 10 part documentary details the inaugural season of the LA KISS of the AFL. One of the main focuses of the documentary series was the quarterback, J.J. Raterink. Now J.J. (our guest this week), played in A LOT of other places other than the LA KISS and I absolutely do not want to diminish his successful career with just his time in LA; J.J. played all over the place and was a very successful quarterback for many years in the AFL. J.J. also spent some time playing in the AF2 and arena football in China. Now that being said, “Fourth and Long,” was a large featured series on AMC, so we can't just gloss over it. J.J. will walk you listeners through is time in the AFL, as well as, answers some specific questions about the documentary and his time with the LA KISS. J.J. also give a brief bit of time talking about area football in China, a topic we have yet to bring up on the show. Thank you J.J. for your time; we appreciate your insight on the AFL, AF2, and arena football in China. Also, thank you listeners for all of your support.
